  • Thread count in Java game

    I'm just curious as to what a reasonable number of threads is for a simple 2D mmo in Java. Is it reasonable to have two threads per connection, one for the input stream and one for the output stream? The reason I ask is because I use a blocking method on the input stream, and a workaround seems unnecessarily complex if I were to try to get around it without adding threads. This is mostly for my own edification; I don't expect to have 5 million people playing it ever, or even 5, but I'm wondering what a good scalable solution is, and if this is reasonable for a small server (<30 connections).

    In my previous post, I introduced my problem, but I didn’t explain the problem with Entity Framework When you try the solution indicated you will take the following error: LINQ to Entities don’t recognize the method 'System.String Join(System.String, System.Collections.Generic.IEnumerable`1[System.String])’ of the method, and this method can’t be translated into a stored expression. The query that produces that error was: 1: var consulta = (from TCabecera cab in 2: contexto_local.TCabecera 3: let Detalle = (from TDetalle detalle 4: in cab.TDetalle 5: select detalle.Nombre) 6: let Nombres = string.Join(",",Detalle ) 7: select new 8: { 9: cab.Campo1, 10: cab.Campo2, 11: Nombres 12: }).ToList(); 13: grid.DataSource=consulta;   Why is this error happening? This error happens when the query couldn’t be translated into T-SQL. Solutions?     In Panda3d, I load a model and place 10000 references to it in the scene-graph. It runs at (say) 2Hz. I load a 3d model containing 10000 copies of that exact same object, and it runs at (say) 60Hz. As does using the flattenStrong() command which is effectively the same thing but at runtime. So the question is: is this behaviour a peculiarity of Panda3d, or is it a fundamental law which applies to all games engines?

In there, I learned that: I should avoid too high a volume, to prevent clipping I should avoid too low a volume, to prevent loss of resolution The question now is: What is too high a volume? What is too low? I am setting the volume via the GUI for sound config. It has an unamplified setting, a 100% setting, and volumes beyond 100%. After 100%, is there still resolution loss? How can I tell if there is clipping going on (given that my recording program is the non-GUI ffmpeg)?

    Okay I'm trying to add comments and reactions count just like what you would normally see on some wordpress blogs like http://johntwang.com/blog/ where on the left top of each post there is ** comment and * reactions* My problem is I can't find the disqus's documentation, where hopefully there is some method I can call to return me the number of reactions and comments. Also if I use the wordpress default method <?php comments_popup_link ('zero','one','more','CSSclass','none');?> it only displays "Comments" not even the comment's number count on the main page. How can I add reaction and comment count with disqus plugin ? edit: well my site is http://www.windows7hacker.com/ I don't know how I suppose to add comments count at first place. But right now if I use the wordpress method, it will return me only comments, which is exactlly one of the problem they have described in their help page I've tired to check the comment count option still doesn't work :(

    I have a sql / sqlite question. I need to write a query that select some values from a sqlite database table. I always want the maximal returned records to be 20. If the total selected records are more than 20 I need to select 20 records that are spread over the total records. It is also important that I always select the first and last value from the table when sorted on the date. I know how to accomplish this in code but it would be perfect to have a sqlite query that can do the same. The query Im using now is really simple and looks like this: "SELECT value,date,valueid FROM tblvalue WHERE tblvalue.deleted=0 ORDER BY DATE(date)" Hope I explained what I need, thanks for your help!

    Using Crystal Reports I'm trying to display the running total of a database field in the header where all the labels are. I've attempted to do this by placing the running total (RTversion) into a formula field with the following: Shared stringvar CurrentVers; CurrentVers := {#CurrentVers}; and then in the page header section I have the following: Shared stringvar CurrentVers; EvaluateAFter({#currentVers}); CurrentVers; with {#CurrentVers} running the 1st largest number. Is this incorrect? Update: The goal is to display the latest version in the header near the labels to show what the current verseion is for comparison.

    Hi, I am working with SSRS2005. I have requirement to display total in the footer. We have to display the total of each category. What I used to do is, write expression for all category names and hide those totals that are not having any value in the current selection. Mango Count = sum(iif(fields!Category.Value = “Mango”,0,1)) Apple Count = sum(iif(fields!Category.Value = “Apple”,0,1)) However, in the new requirement, I don’t have the knowledge of categories. It should report the number of rows with the same values for (green.h.0, green.v.0, and offset.0) by only looking at the previous rows. The example above uses the expected values, but assume they are incorrect. How can I add a new column (say "count") which will count all previous rows which have the same values of the specified variables? I have gotten help on a similar problem of just selecting all rows with the same values for specified columns, so I supposed I could just write a loop around that, but it seems inefficient to me.

    I need to find the total size of a drive in Java 5 (or 1.5, whatever). I know that Java 6 has a new method in java.io.File, but I need it to work in Java 5. Apache Commons IO has org.apache.commons.io.FileSystemUtils to provide the free disk space, but not the total disk space. I realize this is OS dependant and will need to depend on messy command line invocation. I'm fine with it working on "most" systems, i.e. windows/linux/macosx. Preferably I'd like to use an existing library rather than write my own variants. Any thoughts? Thanks.
