  • Virtualbox for Mac OS X - using an external USB drive, which filesystem is ideal?

    Assuming that I am NOT going to add NTFS drivers that allow read+write of NTFS partitions, I was wondering if the choice of filesystem when I partition an external USB drive matters. The choices appear to be HFS+ vs. FAT32. For the time being, I simply created two half-sized paritions, one of each type. :) I plan to run various versions of Windows, and keep the VirtualBox files on the external drive.

  • VirtualBox OSE: Install Guest OS On Headless Host Via VNC?

    I've remotely installed VirtualBox OSE on my Gentoo box at home. I have everything set up and ready for the OS. However all the documentation I've read seems to say that you can only use the PUEL version in order to get remote access during installs - does anyone know if it's possible to do similar with the OSE but using VNC? Links to documentation or tutorials would be welcome, apparently my Google-Fu is failing me, if it's out there. Thanks.

    I have installed Virtualbox in Ubuntu 12.04, and I created a virtual guest with Windows 7 64bit. Guest additions were also installed. It works fine, but I can't set the resolution to anything higher than 1600 x 1200, whereas my screen is 1920x1080. Here's my system specifications: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3632QM CPU @ 2.20GHz AMD Radeon 7650 VGA 8 Gb RAM DDR3 Moreover, if I try to enhable 3D acceleration in the settings of my guest, when I expand to full screen it aborts...   • Can you make desktop shortcuts to Seamless mode Windows apps in VirtualBox on OSX?

    Running the latest version of VirtualBox on OSX and hosting a Windows virtual machine. Is there a way to put shortcuts on your Mac desktop for the Windows apps that you run in seamless mode? I can't find a way to do this, so every time I want to newly launch a Windows app in seamless mode I have to access the full Windows desktop, start the app and hit HostKey+L. Really a pain for apps that you want to run in seamless mode all time.

    Hi, I have a Win7 x64 virtual machine running inside VirtualBox. When I first setup the system I gave the virtual hard drive 20gb of space to work with, but I also set it to dynamically expand (or so I thought). Unfortunately I ran out of space and the drive is not expanding/changing.. and I can't find a way to alter the size of it. Is there anything I can do in this situation. Thanks in advance.

    I have a virtual machine which is currently using a folder on the C: drive to store its snapshots. I have copied the contents of the "Snapshots" folder to an alternate drive, but whenever I go into the General / Advanced settings section for that virtual machine and change the snapshot folder to the new location it resets back to the original location. What do I need to do to get VirtualBox to recognize the new location for the snapshot files?

  • Shared Folders in VirtualBox on Windows 7

    In my adventures with VirtualBox, my latest victory was in figuring out how to share folders between my host OS (Windows 7) and my virtual OS (Windows Server 2008).  Im familiar with VirtualPC and other such products, which allow you to share local folders with the VM.  When you do, they just show up in Windows Explorer and all is good.  However, after configuring shared folders in VirtualBox like so:   I couldnt see them anywhere within the machine. Where are Shared Folders in a VirtualBox VM? Fortunately a bit of searching yielded this article, which describes the problem nicely.  It turns out that there is a magic word you have to know, and that is the share name for the host OS: \\vboxsrv Once you know this, mapping shared folders is straightforward.  From Windows Explorer, click on the Map network drive option, and then map a drive to \\vboxsrv\YOURSHAREDFOLDER Like so: With that, its easy to share folders between the client and host OS using VirtualBox.  The reason I didnt simply use a standard network share to my host OS machine name is that both guest and host are in a VPN, and the VPN is over the Internet and in a different country, so when I went that route my files were (apparently) traveling from host to guest by way of the remote VPN network, rather than locally.  Using the Shared Folders feature dramatically sped up my ability to transfer files between Host and Guest machines.   • Lost network interface after mac change

    I'm using Ubuntu server 12.04 inside Virtualbox and everything was working as expected, but since I changed the mac address in Virtualbox network settings the network interface is not being recognized on Ubuntu. I don't remember the old mac address and everytime Ubuntu starts shows waiting for network configuration when I use ifconfig only appears lo (loopback device) and eth0 is lost, how can I fix this problem?

    I was wanting to play around with something in a VM the other day.  I was curious what was available for free, if anything, for windows.   I quickly came across Virtual Box  ( http://www.virtualbox.org/ ).   Downloaded, Installed. No Problem!  Works really nicely.   It was commercial software (by sun (now oracle)) that turned open source.   In terms of a license it says :- In summary, the VirtualBox PUEL allows you to use VirtualBox free of charge for personal use or, alternatively, for product evaluation. An interesting feature it has is built in RDP.   Which is useful if you have a guest OS that doesn’t support RDP.   Speaking of RDP…..  which I will in my next blog post… I learnt something REALLY useful the other day.

    Suppose I've got some Arch Linux installation which I'd like to distribute among students with (sometimes very) basic Linux knowledge to make them able to compile C programs in an environment very similar to that in the university. (Things like Cygwin or MinGW seem to be inappropriate here.) I also choose VirtualBox as a holder for the virtual system. The question is: how do I distribute it? I mean: installing VirtualBox on the target machine (if not still installed) uncompressing and copying my image file (.VDI) registering the image (so that VirtualBox could see it when launched) configuring the guest system in VirtualBox (network, memory, etc.) optionally installing PuTTY to simplify interfacing with the guest Linux Should I create an installer? Which one? Or just write some .BAT-scripts? (Target host system is Windows, mostly XP and Vista.) I definately don't want to have a webpage with screen shot explaining where to click and what to press, because it's boring. Additionaly, what will be the best (the most user-friendly) way to configure network when the guest Linux system is run for the first time?

  • How to set Virtualbox appliance as webdev portable sollution?

    I just want to set a a Virtualbox virtual appliance to make it portable. Meaning that I'll enable a network config which will not need to be changed when I am using my laptop in a different network. I want the virtual machine to have internet access to keep it updated and be able to always have direct access from host using, for example, the IP 10.0.2.100 even when I am in a 192.168.0.1 network. So the first virtual network adapter will have a static ip (10.0.2.100) and the second will receive it from the DHCP. I don't know if 2 virtual adapters are needed or just one to accomplish that.
