• Nested RDP and ILO/VMWare console sessions, latency and keystroke repetition

  I'm working on a remote server installation entirely through ILO. Due to the software application and environment, my access is restricted to a Windows server that I must access through RDP. Going from that system to the target server is accomplished via HP ILO2 or ILO3. I'm trying to run a CentOS installation in an environment where I can't use a kickstart. I'm doing this via text mode, but the keystrokes are repeating randomly and it's difficult to select the proper installation options. For example: ks=http://all.yourbase.org/kickstart/ks.cfg ends up looking like: ks====httttttp://allll..yourbaseee.....org/kicksstart/ks.cccfg I'm doing this using Microsoft's native RDP client (on Mac and Windows). I've also noticed this before when running installations or doing remote work in nested sessions. Same for typing into a VMWare console in some cases. Is there a nice fix for this, or it it simply a function of the protocol(s)?

• Vagrant with VMware ESXi Provider

  I am attempting to work with Vagrant and the vagrant-vsphere plugin to deploy machines to my VMware ESXi server. Has anyone had any luck in getting this to work? I realize that vagrant-vsphere is still 0.0.1 though and there are bound to be bugs. Specifially, Vagrant and vagrant-vsphere appear to fail during the vsphere connection, however, SSH and CLI access is enabled and the vSphere powershell is able to connect without an issue. INFO warden: Calling action: # ERROR warden: Error occurred: VagrantPlugins::VSphere::Errors::VSphereError The hostd log file on the ESXi server shows the Vagrant doing an SearchIndex query.

• VMWare - persistent "Host memory status" alarm in vSphere

  I have a particular VMWare ESX 4.1 host that has a very persistent "Host memory status" alarm. This is running on an HP ProLiant DL360 G7 server. The HP ILO and System Management agents don't know any errors. If I clear the alarm in the vSphere client, it returns within a day. I've tried reseating DIMMs, however, the error does not indicate a problem with a specific module. There's another host in the cluster with an identical configuration. It's not exhibiting any issues. Any thoughts? This is touched on briefly on other forums (and here) with no clear resolution.

• VMware networking - PortChannel or not?

  My ESX hosts each have 8 NICS. I have set up 2 NICs for our iSCSI SAN - each is connected to a different SAN switch. 2 NICs are set up for vMotion and Service Console - these are each connected to a different core switch (ports are trunked with VLANs dedicated to vMotion and Management) I now have four ports left over. Currently we have these set up each going into our default VLAN. Two NICs are connected to one core-switch and two are connected to the other. We decided to aggregate the connections to each switch - so they are teamed at the vswitch end, and port channelled at the physical switch end. I am now reading that port channelling these connections is not particularly useful, perhaps even over complicating things. Is there a particular problem with using port channels for VMware? What method provides the best balance between redundancy and performance?

• VMware ESXi - vSphere - Can't exit VM console access

  I'm running ESXi 4.1 on a Dell T110 Server I connect to ESXi using vSphere vSphere is running inside a Windows 7 VM The Windows 7 VM is running in VMware Fusion on my Mac OS X system When I'm in vSphere and I've selected a VM and I click the console tab on some systems the VM console won't release me when I press the control + command keys. pfSense (FreeBSD) and Ubuntu Server behave like this. I can't exit their console screen. I have to shut down these VM's to be released from their VM console access. Windows, Ubuntu Desktop, etc. all behave like I'd expect; When I press the control + command keys I'm released from the VM console and I'm able to navigate in vSphere. Does anyone know what might be causing this or a way around this? Thanks in advance.

  I've just setup vmware vsphere 5 on a remote server (rented dedicated server). I've added my first VPS (centos 5.8) barebones. It's not finding any IP (internal or external) on boot. I've had an extra external IP assigned to my server that I wanted to use on the VPS. I tried editing the eth0 config and adding the IP in there and turning off the DHCP, but it can't find any IP or ping google or do any networking type things. How do I route the IP to my VPS so I can access it remotely?

  Hi there, I have a ESX3i, build 207095 and i'm having a problem connecting to my VM's using the vmware remote console. On my PC always gives me an error about vmare-remotemks. I can do all of the tasks using VI client, but when a try to open remote console it breaks, the only thing that apears on the black screen is "unknown MKS Event". I can't find a solution to my problem, and i really need to be able to start a remote console from my PC. On my laptop the error doesn't occurs, both machines are Windows 7 x64. Thanks, JGanhão

• Mac OS X: pushing all traffic through a VMWare VM [closed]

  I want to set up an Astaro (Sophos) UTM in a Virtual Machine. The Setup should be at the end the following: Cable Modem (one IP adress) | [Ethernet] Sophos UTM (running as VM [VMWare Fusion 5] on the MacMini) | [WIFI] Airport Express v2 (for sharing Local Network to wireless and wired clients) 1)| [WIFI] 2)| [Ethernet over Thunderbolt Ethernet Adapter]* Clients MacMini (Local File Server) *To have the Mini also protected behind the UTM So the setup process for the UTM works fine, but then the problems start: I just have one external IP (from my cable modem provider)== So if I put the VM in briged mode my Internet connection drops, because the MacMini also has its IP adress. If I put the VM to NAT mode the Mini itself is not protected by the UTM So: is there a way to hide the en0 interface(Ethernet) and the en1 interface (Wifi) from the MacMini, so that they not even appear in System Preferences Network section but are available to the VM? That way the Mini must connect to the en2 interface (Thunderbolt adapter) to make any Internet/LAN connection and I just use the given single IP from the Cable Modem. Thaks for any suggestions...   Hi All, I'm a newbie developer wanting to learn a bit about Virtualization (from the IT point of view, not theoretical/academic). What I'd like to do: Prepare a machine Install VMWare or VirtualBox Prepare 3 Guest OSes (one for Win2k8 server, 2 for Ubuntu Server) Win2k8 will run SQL Server 2k8 and IIS (for ASP.NET MVC deployment) 1 Ubuntu Server for Drupal, SugarCRM, MediaWiki, typical LAMP stuff 1 Ubuntu Server for Java (Tomcat/Jetty + MySQL/PostgreSQL) What I'd like to know: What would be the ideal Host OS such that the Host OS should not spend too many resources on itself but should boost these instances of VMs (e.g: does Win2k8 performs better vs Linux?) What would be the ideal machine for this (preferably AMD base chip) I'm not expecting the best performance out of this setup, just a decent one to host one drupal instance, one ASP.NET MVC (future, not now), and one Tomcat/Jetty instance. NB: If you have a better suggestions on the setup, feel free to let me know (e.g: maybe Drupal and Tomcat can be in one instance but move the database to another instance instead of 1 instance map to 1 webserver and 1 dbserver).   Hi! Problem 1: I have Ubuntu 9.10 installed and Workstation 7.01. All VMs (WinXP, Win7, Debian) I run do not resize any more. Problem 2: Unity Mode "Bar" works for short and disapears after seconds .. opened programs with unity mode work well, but the bar disapears History: I changed from Ubuntu 9.04 to 9.10, no VM was moved or changed. Latest VMWare Tools are installed, Auto fit Guest is activated. I am quite sure, that resizing / auto fitting and Unity Mode worked well with Ubuntu 9.04 thx for a hint, i hope didn't overlook something ..

• SNMP - Value of CPU processor load not reflecting reality

  Trying to plot CPU load on my server, with the following hardware: ProLiant DL360p Gen8 (same behavior on ProLiant DL360 G7). The machine is running VMWare ESXi5.1 To create a CPU spike I run dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/null, and I know the CPU is overloaded, because I can see a correlating spike in the graphs displayed on vCenter. However, running this snmpwalk: snmpwalk -v 1 -c ******** 192.168.MY_IP 1.3.6.1.2.1.25.3.3.1.2 Shows the following results: iso.3.6.1.2.1.25.3.3.1.2.1 = INTEGER: 3 iso.3.6.1.2.1.25.3.3.1.2.2 = INTEGER: 2 iso.3.6.1.2.1.25.3.3.1.2.3 = INTEGER: 2 iso.3.6.1.2.1.25.3.3.1.2.4 = INTEGER: 3 Am I not looking into the right MIB? Should I be multiplying these by a constant? By the way, using HP Agentless Monitoring I was able to get some cpu stats, but not what I'm looking for, at least nothing I could find wading through these MIBs.

  This is taken from an Ubuntu 10.10 VM running on ESX5: Nov 3 21:58:50 server1 ntpd[21169]: adjusting local clock by 31.187370s Nov 3 22:02:36 server1 ntpd[21169]: adjusting local clock by 31.159808s Nov 3 22:05:18 server1 ntpd[21169]: adjusting local clock by 31.067579s Nov 3 22:07:59 server1 ntpd[21169]: adjusting local clock by 30.952187s Nov 3 22:11:38 server1 ntpd[21169]: adjusting local clock by 30.890147s According to the VMWare KB no kernel tweaks should be needed for Ubuntu 10.10 to maintain time to their standards. What's especially odd is the drift seems fairly consistent. Any help appreciated on this one!

  I have several Ubuntu Linux virtual machines running on VMware ESXi hosts that have all been allocated disks much larger than their required capacity. As space is now becoming an issue on our SAN, I'd like to investigate downsizing the allocated disk space on these machines. All systems will be completely backed up imaged before I begin making changes, and I will always retain a pristine backup in case the partition resizing does not work. Is there an easier way than the following procedure, or is their a better solution entirely? Shutdown and assign a second disk to the virtual machine Boot using the SystemRescueCD Use GParted to resize the original (source) partition, making it smaller Clone the new, smaller partition to the second disk Shutdown and remove initial disk from the virtual machine Reboot and force fsck to check the filesystem

  I'm running XP pro on VMware - it mounts and runs just fine. However, if I power down the VM and try to copy it, or even if I try to do a simple Mac Backup (using Carbon Copy Cloner), I get an i/o error at one very specific VMDK file. • Allow VMWare client to connect only via VPN

  I have a VMWare (currently using Workstation on Vista, but thinking about switching to ESX) client with Windows XP. I've installed OpenVPN in the client and it connects to the corporate VPN server. I want to make sure that all traffic from the Windows XP machine goes trough this VPN tunnel, but I can't change any settings on the corporate VPN server. Is it possible to restrict the internet connectivity of the Windows XP client in such a way that it can only send packets to the IP of the corporate VPN server? In that way it'd be impossible for packets to bypass the tunnel. I've looked at NAT configurations but couldn't see how I could make this setup.

• VMWare Fusion cannot connect to the NAT connection on my Mac

  I have been using VMWare Fusion on my Mac to check out my websites on localhost. Now I can't connect anymore with the NAT connection. There seems to be a problem with my IP address or Mac address? I have no idea what causes this, it was working fine before!? In the XP (SP2) VM, in the taskbar I see the Local Area Connection with the yellow warning icon. The bubble says: "This connection has limited or no connectivity. You might not be aisle to access the Internet or some network resources. For more information, click this message." Doing that opens up the Local Area Connection Status panel. In the Support tab, when I click the repair button I get following message: "Windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following action cannot be completed: Renewing IP address." Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  hi I have annoying problem. My setup is the following: debian Linux, 64 bits, VMWare workstation 7 host, with Windows XP running as guest. From Firefox, or Internet Explorer, I am unable to access few sites, for example nvidia.com, osdir. Basically get connection timed out, on the other hand ping works to those sites. Moreover, Slashdot loads very very slow and sometimes gets horrible text-only version. everything works fine on Linux host I suspect it has something to do with routing on Linux, I recall having similar problem long time ago, which was fixed by setting something in /proc. I tried setting MTU and TCP window size on Windows lower, but did not help Any idea what is going on?

• Using physical disk with VMware Workstation

  I am using VMware Workstation 9.0 under Windows 7 and trying to load my Linux from Physicaldisk0. And it boots, grub sees the two partitions on the disk (I checked in command line) and the kernel and the initrd loads and then it stops saying "device not found"and drops me into an emergency shell. Indeed there is absolutely nothing in /dev not the /sda device it expects not /hda nothing that looks like a disk. Edit: I can boot the Linux disk just fine if I boot it from BIOS and not as a VM. Edit2: The question is, how can I make this setup work?

  I've received an .OVA file and I need to be aple to open/parse it. When I try to open it with VMware player, I get the following error: "Failed to open virtual machine: Failed to query source for information." When I try to open it with the Converter standalone client I get: "Unable to parse the OVF file" The extension can be OVF or OVA so I did choose the right file tipe from the open file dialog. If anyone had similar experience and solved it, please let me know. Thanks.

• Reconciling vmware memory vs windows memory usage

  I have a Windows 2008 R2 64 bit virtual machine on ESXi 4.1 host. The host reports that the virtual machine is actively using less than 1 GB of memory. But, in Windows it's reporting the machine is using 7 GB of memory, even though the total of the processes listed in task manager is less than 1 GB. The machine is rather unresponsive and I'm concerned this is impacting other applications (server's purpose is to run ASP.NET state server process, which has been having trouble and led me to spot the memory question). I just noticed High memory usage Windows Server 2008r2 on VMware and will be looking through those documents more, but what is causing this?

• Cannot find the 2nd datastore after upgrading ESXi 3.5

  I have an ESXi server (version 3.5) with about 60 VMs. It has 2 hard disks, each of which is regarded as a datastore. After upgrading through 'VMware Infrastructure Update' tool(still staying with 3.5 instead of 4.0) and a reboot, I can only see the 1st datastore. Hence many VMs are, now, inaccessible. I wonder how I can get the 2nd datastore back. I am sorry, but I did't have the 2nd datastore backuped before. BTW, I am still thinking of upgrading directly to version 4.0 to see if it can fix the driver problem. How about that?
