• ZFS SAS/SATA controller recommendations

  I've been working with OpenSolaris and ZFS for 6 months, primarily on a Sun Fire x4540 and standard Dell and HP hardware. One downside to standard Perc and HP Smart Array controllers is that they do not have a true "passthrough" JBOD mode to present individual disks to ZFS. One can configure multiple RAID 0 arrays and get them working in ZFS, but it impacts hotswap capabilities (thus requiring a reboot upon disk failure/replacement). I'm curious as to what SAS/SATA controllers are recommended for home-brewed ZFS storage solutions. In addition, what effect does battery-backed write cache (BBWC) have in ZFS storage?

• How to SSH to guest ubuntu OS in vmplayer4

  I have installed vmplayer4.0.4 on Windows7, and install ubuntu12.04 as Guest OS. Basically i have two problems: Default vmplayer use NAT for network access. I could ping the guest OS from the Host OS. But how could i access the Guest OS from outside the Host OS? If i change to Bridged Mode, sure the Guest Ubuntu OS could get DHCP ip in the same subnet as Host OS. But i could not ping the Guest OS from the Host OS, or vice versa, even if i disable the iptables firewall on Ubuntu Guest OS like following: iptables -F iptables -X iptables -t nat -F iptables -t nat -X iptables -t mangle -F iptables -t mangle -X iptables -P INPUT ACCEPT iptables -P FORWARD ACCEPT iptables -P OUTPUT ACCEPT I could not figure it out, could anyone help on this issue? • Trying To Uninstall Exchange 2007 From Server - Stuck On "Mailbox Role Checks"

  Hi All, I am trying to uninstall Exchange 2007 on a secodary server which has been decommissioned for quite a while (cleaning up after an old Network Admin). The only roll the server had was "Mailbox Role" (the primary server also has this). I have tried uninstalling using Programs and Features GUI tool but that hung on Mailbox Role Checks. I then tried uninstalling Exchange by running Setup.com /mode:uninstall. It has been stuck on 1% of "Mailbox Role Checks" for over 3 hours now. Is there any other options I have for uninstalling Exchange 2007 so the old server can be removed from the Exchange Management console?

• Mysqldump causes "Too many connections"

  A scheduled backup using mysqldump on one of our databases is causing Too many connections. The database is of both InnoDB and MyISAM tables with size of around 500Mb. The Too many connections appears for about 2-3 minutes We understand that mysqldump locks the tables and causes all other queries and connections to pile up and jam the mysql server. We need frequent backups and we cannot afford server downtime or putting websites in maintenance mode while doing it. Our websites are global and traffic is high all the time so its hard to find a moment for backups. How can we avoid downtime during backups?Is there maybe a way to use mysqldump in way that it will not lock all tables at the same time?Is there an alternative to backing up with mysqldump?

• Everything Windows Explorer does hangs up t some time or another

  Yes this is a duplicate of something I have tried to ask in the past. I think I am posting wrong since my first question was deleted OK I ran SCANNOW nd it came back with no problems. I booted in Safe mode and windows evplorer worked OK. I am not sure what that proves. I also ran AUTRUNS and disabled everything that you said, but it still dies. I read someplace that it could be a service program, but I can't find that link anymore. Something about shutting off all non-windows SP's and then start adding back SP's until it quits. The problem is that sometimes it will work, but most of the time it does not. Makes saving or retrieving anything impossible. SAVEAS hangs up, my Garmin Map updater hangs up etc.. I was having this problem before installing Garmin so I am reasonably sure it is not the problem HELP PLEASE, I don't have many brain cells left and can't afford to lose more.

  I have a computer (HP Pavilion g6-2342dx) which came with Windows 8, and thus the new UEFI boot system. I would like to install a few OS's which are not EFI compatible, and Arch GNU/Linux with BIOS mode. However, I would not like to completely wipe all my files to set to legacy. My preferred options would be to: 1. Multiboot legacy OS alongside my EFI os 2. Convert Windows 8 and Ubuntu to legacy without reformatting or switching to MSDOS part table. If anyone could suggest a solution or a method, your help would be appreciated! Thanks!

  Greetings, I am currently plagued with BSODS on startup (both normal and safe mode) for my XP Pro. After much troubleshooting I have determined it is a driver problem. However, because I cannot even boot I do not know how to fix it.   Lately I've noticing entries like this one in the kern.log of one of my servers: Feb 16 00:24:05 aramis kernel: swapper: page allocation failure. order:0, mode:0x20 This is what I'd like to know: What exactly does that message mean? Is my server running out of memory? The swap usage is quite low (less than 10%), and so far I haven't noticed any processes being killed because of lack of memory. Additional information: The server is a Xen instance (DomU) running Debian 6.0 It has 512 MB of RAM and a 512 MB swap partition CPU load inside the virtual machine shows an average of 0.25

  Installed HFS for Windows 7 yesterday. Did a reboot. Copied some files from my internal drive to external hfs drive. Did another reboot and rebooted to Mac. Mac worked fine. Then yesterday the battery went dead on my mac and the computer switched off. This morning tried to boot into windows but got a BSOD as soon as I moved my mouse in the login screen. BSOD refeers to an error with service HFSPLUS.SYS Now when I try to boot into mac (pressing alt while restarding) the mac drive isn's shown and I can only boot into Windows 7 Safe Mode. Cannot uninstall HFS for Windows the uninstaller in control panel says: "THE WINDOWS INSTALLER SERVICE COULD NOT BE ACCESSED. THIS CAN OCCUR WHEN WINDOWS INSTALLER IS NOT CORRECTLY INSTALLED".   Hi, I have home DSL connection from my ISP with a beetel modem at my end. I want to make my network wireless, so i bought a linksys wrt54gl and installed open-wrt on it. My ISP provides dynamic IP's with me connecting via pppoe. My question is how do I configure openwrt to work with this. Please suggest what option should I go with, or any other you recommend. DSL cable--Beetel Modem-- Wrt54gl in bridge mode with beetel modem doing the pppoe and having a DHCP server. DSL cable--Wrt54gl with wrt54gl handling the pppoe. Is option 2 possible, can I have a setup without bringing the beetel modem in the picture at all?

• MySQL query (over SSL) fails in IIS 7 using default AppPool identity

  I am trying to run a website locally in Windows 7 under IIS 7. I have the AppPool configured to use "Classic" mode, but connecting to a MySQL DB that requires SSL fails. If I change the identity to my user account it works perfectly. It fails when using the default "ApplicationPoolIdentity" account. Is there something I'm missing somewhere? Why would running a MySQL query over SSL fail for certain user accounts? Update: This is the exception that the MySQL Connector is throwing: "Reading from the stream has failed. Attempted to read past the end of the stream."

  I am planning to build a network attached storage (NAS) server. Is there a way to cache frequently acccessed files from the remote storage automatically on the local PC? (I am not looking for a way to sync whole folders like rsync, but rather something that automatically and transparently caches the last accessed 50 gb of files.) Ideally I am searching for something that caches writes as well as reads, since only one pc will be accessing the server (and one day of lost changes if the local cache is damaged would be acceptable) I looked into windows offline files, but as far as I could tell this requires manual interaction to disconnect the server or go into offline mode in order to use the cache. The server would probably be running Linux or freeNAS, the pc runs Windows xp, but could be upgraded to 7 if required.

• Dell PR03X port replicator and DisplayPort to DVI adapter not detecting second monitor

  I have a Dell M4400 connected to a PR03X port replicator/docking station. I use the DVI port to connect it to a first Dell 2208WFP monitor and I'm trying to use a DisplayPort-to-DVI adapter to connect it to a second Dell 2208WFP monitor. The second monitor, connected via the DisplayPort-to-DVI adapter immediately goes into sleep mode and the laptop doesn't detect it. What is really weird is that it did detect it the first time I plugged it in but after I unplugged the monitor and plugged it back in it stopped working. I swapped the monitors round and it detected them both but after unplugging the monitor connected via the DisplayPort-to-DVI and plugging it in again it stopped working. Both monitors work if plugged in directly to the DVI port. Is there some way to force re-detection? Any ideas?

• IIS 7.5 default permission - is restriction needed?

  I am using IIS 7.5 and I do not need to explicitly specify permissions for my ISAPI application to execute. Additionally, the application can create subdirectories, create and delete files without me specifying permissions. Since I am using the default permissions, checked to see if web.config was safe from prying eyes over the web, and it can’t be read which is good. My app also creates some .log and .ini files which are also not viewable over the web. I did notice that .txt files are viewable. I really don’t know how default permissions allow my app to do so much. Is this safe or do I need to lock down? To be honest, I don’t know what accounts to restrict. App details: My ISAPI has an ‘allowed’ entry in ISAPI and CGI Restrictions Folder and subfolders containing my application has ‘default’ permissions set. Application pool is using ‘classic’ pipeline mode and no managed code. Pass-through authentication in use. Thank you for your time

• Url rewriting stops working after changing default port on iis7

  I have migrated the IIS6 webserver 2003 websites to IIS7 webserver 2008 using msdeploy tool. Application pool setting are changed with "Enable 32-bit Applications=true", "Managed_Pipeline_Mode=Classic","Identity=NetworkService" Framework=v1.1/2.0. All the websites are working fine on default port along with url rewriting migrated from iis6. When I start the webserver on port other than default port by changing bindings, url rewriting stops workings and get 404 error in logs. I think I don't have to change the handler mapping cause I am running it in classic mode. How can I troubleshoot this?

• FTP transfer hangs for random files

  I've been stuck on this FTP issue for a while now. I have IIS 7 setup with an IIS 6 FTP server running on a Windows Server 2008 box. The problem I am running into is that I can't download certain files from the FTP server, even though I uploaded those files to the FTP server. The connection times out after 120 seconds. I have used Wireshark and checked the log files. The only message I see is the timeout message. The first thing that came to my mind was permission issues, however I have probably tried every combination of permissions that I can think of, with the end goal of getting the permissions to be the same for the files that work and the files that do not work. With the list of files I have now, I can download the zip, war, and msi files, but not the txt or sql files. It almost seems like a binary thing, but I've changed my transfer mode on the FTP client and also toggled the Active/Passive options around.

• Windows 7 login screen show only last user and "Other User" icons after profile problem.

  I recently had a profile problem with my Windows 7 PC. My original profile in the registry had ".bak" appended to it and a new profile was created. I was unable to login with the new profile. I fixed this immediate problem by logging on in safe mode. This enabled me to restore my original profile. However, since that moment the login screen now operates differently. Instead of showing icons for all the users with accounts on the PC, it now only shows two icons. The first icon is the last user who logged on and the second icon always shows "Other User". I have tried several different solutions recommended by other people with similar problems, but none of them have fixed the problem. I think the person who started this thread has the same problem, but none of the proposed solutions helped him either. Any help much appreciated.

  My laptop has Windows Vista installed in it. Everytime, I switch on the computer, the function key seems to be enabled automatically. So, when I press i, 5 is displayed and so on and so forth. Now, I have checked and ensured that Function is key is not locked due to a faulty keyboard or coke spilling on it and suchlike. I am able to get out of it with the following key combination Fn + Ctrl + Ins (Num Lk) However, the next time I switch on my PC, the Function key is automatically enabled. Also, if my computer goes to sleep mode and comes back, it is enabled again. Anything that I can do to change this behaviour?

• Ubuntu Server 12.04 LTS on Hyper-V 2012

  I have the following scenario: Hyper-V 2012 server core installation. On top of this i created a virtual machine on which i tried installing Ubuntu Server 12.04 which should not have any compatibility issues according to what Microsoft and Ubuntu are saying (although it is not officially supported). I start, run the installation and everything is ok, no problems detecting the network device or the hard drive (unlike debian which didn't even detect the hard drive). Once the installation is complete it asks me to reboot, it unmounts the "dvd drive" and reboots. Once it tries to start again i get the following error: Boot failure. Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in the selected Boot device. It seems to not be booting up from the virtual hard drive. The hard drive is set up in SCSI mode, nothing mounted on the IDE controller (no iso image or anything else. Does anyone have any ideas on what i can do to solve this?
