• Discuss: PLs are characterised by which (iso)morphisms are implemented

  I am interested to hear discussion of the proposition summarised in the title. As we know programming language constructions admit a vast number of isomorphisms. In some languages in some places in the translation process some of these isomorphisms are implemented, whilst others require code to be written to implement them. For example, in my language Felix, the isomorphism between a type T and a tuple of one element of type T is implemented, meaning the two types are indistinguishable (identical). Similarly, a tuple of N values of the same type is not merely isomorphic to an array, it is an array: the isomorphism is implemented by the compiler. Many other isomorphisms are not implemented for example there is an isomorphism expressed by the following client code: match v with | ((?x,?y),?z = x,(y,z) // Felix match v with | (x,y), - x,(y,z) (* Ocaml *) As another example, a type constructor C of int in Felix may be used directly as a function, whilst in Ocaml you must write a wrapper: let c x = C x Another isomorphism Felix implements is the elimination of unit values, including those in tuples: Felix can do this because (most) polymorphic values are monomorphised which can be done because it is a whole program analyser, Ocaml, for example, cannot do this easily because it supports separate compilation. For the same reason Felix performs type-class dispatch at compile time whilst Haskell passes around dictionaries. There are some quite surprising issues here. For example an array is just a tuple, and tuples can be indexed at run time using a match and returning a value of a corresponding sum type. Indeed, to be correct the index used is in fact a case of unit sum with N summands, rather than an integer. Yet, in a real implementation, if the tuple is an array the index is replaced by an integer with a range check, and the result type is replaced by the common argument type of all the constructors: two isomorphisms are involved here, but they're implemented partly in the compiler translation and partly at run time.

• 2-D Codes in Retail

  The UPC you find on packaging is a one-dimensional barcode that's been in use, in one form or another, since the 1970s. While its a good symbology to encode numbers like a product identifier, its not really big enough to hold much more. It also requires a barcode scanner (like those connected to the POS), although iPhone apps like RedLaser have proved a mobile camera can be made to work in many situations. The next generation barcodes are two-dimensional and therefore capable of holding much more information as well as being more conducive to cameras. The most popular format is the QR Code, widely used in Japan because almost every mobile phone has a built-in reader. A typical use for QR Codes is to embed a URL so that that a mobile phone can quickly navigate to the specified web page. QR Codes can be found on posters, billboards, catalogs, and circulars. Speaking of which, Best Buy recently put a QR code in their circular as shown below. If fact, they even updated their iPhone application to include a QR Code reader. I was able to scan the barcode above right from the screen with my iPhone without issues, even though its fairly small in this image. Clearly they are planning to incorporate more QR Codes in their stores and advertising. If you haven't seen QR Codes before, you're not looking hard enough. They are around and will continue to spread.

• What are the possible options for AI path-finding etc when the world is "partitionned"?

  If you anticipate a large persistent game world, and you don't want to end up with some game server crashing due to overload, then you have to design from the ground up a game world that is partitioned in chunks. This is in particular true if you want to run your game servers in the cloud, where each individual VM is relatively week, and memory and CPU are at a premium. I think the biggest challenge here is that the player receives all the parts around the location of the avatar, but mobs/monsters are normally located in the server itself, and can only directly access the data about the part of the world that the server own. So how can we make the AI behave realistically in that context? It can send queries to the other servers that own the neighboring parts, but that sounds rather network intensive and latency prone. It would probably be more performant for each mob AI to be spread over the neighboring parts, and proactively send the relevant info to the part that contains the actual mob atm. That would also reduce the stress in a mob crossing a border between two parts, and therefore "switching server". Have you heard of any AI design that solves those issues? Some kind of distributed AI brain? Maybe some kind of "agent" community working together through message passing?

  I'm working on a website where users will be able to register and provide information about their location. In order to prevent users from inputting incorrect data, we don't want users to provide free-text information but instead choose from predefined values as much as possible. We believe there are 2 ways of providing those values: use an API to an external service provider or create your own local database. APIs Some resources: - https://developers.facebook.com/docs/reference/ads-api/get-autocomplete-data/ - http://developer.yahoo.com/geo/geoplanet/ Pros: -accuracy and completeness of data. -no maintenance related to update of data as this it taken care of by API provider. -easier/faster to get started (no need to create local database, just implement API). Cons: -degradation of performance when availability issues with external API. -outage due to changes to the external API (until your code is updated to reflect those changes). -lock-in with external provider. Local database Some resources: - http://developer.yahoo.com/geo/geoplanet/data/ - http://www.maxmind.com/app/geolitecity - http://download.geonames.org/export/dump/ Pros: -no external dependency: improved stability and performance. Assuming the depth information requested from users is as follows: -country: interested in value. also used to narrow down list of regions. -region (state in the US, county in the UK...): not interested in value itself, only used to narrow down list of cities. -city: interested in value (which can be used to work out related region should we need regional statistics). -address: interested in value although OPTIONAL. • Remap keyboard Ubuntu 12.04; Asus Q500A

  I have an Asus Q500A with win8 and Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit; linux kernel 3.8.0-32-generic. I am using gnome-panel, and xserver-xorg-lts-raring. I have been experiencing problems with the keyboard short-cuts since I had a fresh install. fn+f10 is supposed to mute my system, but instead it will repeatedly press d. fn+f11 is volume down, but it presses c. fn+f12 is volume up, presses b repeatedly. Most of the other on-board short-cuts such as adjusting screen and led brightness work most of the time, but sometimes press other letters repeatedly. Also, sometimes my cntr gets held down for no reason. Everything works fine in windows. I have tried installing all recommends and sudo dpkg-reconfigure -a to reconfigure all packages, which did not solve my problem. I have tried using KeyTouch editor to edit keymaps, navigating to /usr/shar/x11/xkb/keymap when I try opening any of these files it says file contains no keyboard element. I think If I were just able to remap my keyboard it might solve my issues, otherwise if anyone knows where I can get asus drivers for 12.04 please let me know Apparently I didn't have all repositories enabled. I executed the following commands and am trying the updates they give me. • EPM Planning 11.1.2 - MassGridStatistics

  A utility is available for Oracle Hyperion Planning that determines web form load times.  This utility, MassGridStatistics, opens all web forms within the Planning application.  After the forms are opened, an html page will appear showing the form options, suppression, number of row column and page members, and load times.  Any form having a load time longer than one second could potentially have scalability issues in a multi-user environment and should be considered for re-design.  Adding suppression (especially block suppression) and reducing the number of rows and columns are potential fixes that will reduce load times. The MassGridStatistics utility is located in a .7z file called MassGridStatistics.7z.  Extract the file using 7-Zip.  A readme file is provided listing the installation instructions and the steps to run the utility. MassGridStatistics is included with the 11.1.2.1.101 patch set and will also be in all future releases starting with 11.1.2.2.  For earlier Planning releases, an SR will be necessary to have Support provide the utility.

  I am having problems with my display. The problem manifests as lots of screen artefacts, which seem to be worse in Unity than in Gnome 3, are worse after i have used suspend and are intolerable if i set myself up on a dual monitor. Specific issues include: icons disappearing, lines occurring all over the screen, the backgrounds of certain windows going another colour and window borders disappearing or being filled with text from other parts of the screen. The most annoying problem is lines of text disappearing from a host of word processing programmes (libreoffice, gedit, bluefish etc), as i type. In most circumstances the screen problem can be temporarily fixed (so that i can see the screen clearly) by either scrolling the text off the screen and then scrolling it back onto the screen, or highlighting the offending area of the desktop, by clicking and dragging. Errors on parts of the screen that don't seem to redraw (window borders (off the universal menu) or the screen area outside of a LO document, in print layout view, for example) can't seem to be fixed in a session. • How can I convince my boss to invest into the developer environment?

  Our boss said that developers should have fewer mistakes so the company would have money for displays, servers etc. An always mentioned example is a late firing of an underperforming colleague whose salary would have covered some of these expenses. On the other hand it happened a few times that it took a few days to free up some disk space on our servers since we can't get any more disk. The cost of mandays was definitely higher than the cost of a new HDD. Another example is that we use 14-15" notebooks for development and most of the developers get external displays after they spent one year at the company. The price of a 22-24" display is just a small fraction of a developers annual salary. Devs say that they like the company because of other reasons (high quality code, interesting projects etc.) but this kind of issues not just simply time-consuming but also demotivate them. In the point of view of the developers it seems that the boss always can find an issue in the past which they could have been done better so it's pointless to work better to get for a second display/HDD/whatever. How can I convince my boss to invest more into development environment? Is it possible to break this endless loop?

• Single Responsibility Principle - How Can I Avoid Code Fragmentation?

  I'm working on a team where the team leader is a virulent advocate of SOLID development principles. However, he lacks a lot of experience in getting complex software out of the door. We have a situation where he has applied SRP to what was already quite a complex code base, which has now become very highly fragmented and difficult to understand and debug. We now have a problem not only with code fragmentation, but also encapsulation, as methods within a class that may have been private or protected have been judged to represent a 'reason to change' and have been extracted to public or internal classes and interfaces which is not in keeping with the encapsulation goals of the application. We have some class constructors which take over 20 interface parameters, so our IoC registration and resolution is becoming a monster in its own right. I want to know if there is any 'refactor away from SRP' approach we could use to help fix some of these issues. I have read that it doesn't violate SOLID if I create a number of empty courser-grained classes that 'wrap' a number of closely related classes to provide a single-point of access to the sum of their functionality (i.e. mimicking a less overly SRP'd class implementation). Apart from that, I cannot think of a solution which will allow us to pragmatically continue with our development efforts, while keeping everyone happy. Any suggestions ?

  I have a problem with a cron job which starts but doesn't complete. Running the command manually works fine. I already read the page about cron issues and solutions here on AskUbuntu, tried the proposed solutions but didn't find an answer working in my case. I'm using Ubuntu 12.04. $ crontab -e SHELL=/bin/bash # otherwise it would be /bin/sh 59 16 * * * /bin/duply calendar backup > /tmp/duply.log Btw, the cron file ends with an empty line, as someone pointed out. Once the job has "finished"...: $ cat /tmp/duply.log Start duply v1.5.7, time is 2012-06-22 16:59:01. Instead, running manually the script it works correctly and gives this output: Start duply v1.5.7, time is 2012-06-22 17:06:39. [cut] ... here is a long output generated by duply. ... and yes, files have been backed up. [cut] --- Finished state OK at 17:06:42.581 - Runtime 00:00:03.170 --- I also tried to restart the cron daemon (sudo service cron restart) but nothing changed. Initially haven't any issues with that. day ago installed updates on Ubuntu and after restarting the system found the absence of Win7 in Grub list. • Upgrade to 12.04 results to empty Dash, no date & time either on the top panel

  I've upgraded from Ubuntu netbook remix something to 12.04 LTS, and I've got two issues. (Got an Asus eeePc 32bits, Intel 945GME x86/MMX/SSE2 and Intel Atom CPU N270 @ 1.6Ghz x2) Nothing in the Dash. Only the "home" tab, other tabs are missing. No search results whatsoever. Missing elements in the system panel, privacy and date & time. No date & time on the right corner either. I've tried to reset unity with the terminal but the process was a whole mess full of errors. It did show date & time in the system panel (not on the top-right corner) while the process was going on in the terminal. But then it was such a mess (no more icons on the right corner amongst other things), and the process wouldn't complete, so I had to reboot the computer and get Unity as before, still no date & time and privacy.

• best way to enlarge system partition

  I have a problem - I need to enlarge my system partition. I mean - when I initially installed Ubuntu, I split the partition so I have 15GB for system and the rest (around 400) pointed at /home/. This is very useful if anything goes wrong someday and I want to format and completely re-install Ubuntu without losing any of my actual data. The problem is, 15GB isn't enough, so it seems. I already moved /var/ and /opt/ folder to /home/, adding symlinks at root, but I'm still at 86% usage and I'm having performance issues (mostly when booting or running a VM). I can use Ubuntu on a flash drive and externally enlarge the partition, but I'm really afraid with going forward with that plan. Also, despite what I said before, I'd like to avoid re-installing the system if at all possible. Any advice, suggestions or ideas on how to best approach this? Any warnings I should heed? I just want to make sure that I'm prepared as best as possible before I actually start development. I don't like the thought of using Microsoft Word or Excel for my project management... I already worked with MS Project but I don't think it fits my needs. I need a software where I can easily maintain project steps, milestones, important issues, information about technologies and engines I use, as well as simple notes and thoughts I just want to write down. I usually prefer a whiteboard for stuff like that but unfortunately it's not a persistent way of storing. ;) Also writing it down the old-school way is something I can think of, but only for quick notes... Which software do you use for that? Are there commonly used programs? Is there any free software at all?

• Agile development challenges

  With Scrum / user story / agile development, how does one handle scheduling out-of-sync tasks that are part of a user story? We are a small gaming company working with a few remote consultants who do graphics and audio work. Typically, graphics work should be done at least a week (sometimes 2 weeks) in advance of the code so that it's ready for integration. However, since SCRUM is supposed to focus on user stories, how should I split the stories across iteration so that they still follow the user story model? Ideally, a user story should be completed by all the team members in the same iteration, I feel that splitting them in any way violates the core principle of user story driven development. Also, one front end developer can work at 2X pace of backend developers. However, that throws the scheduling out of sync as well because he is either constantly ahead of them or what we have done is to have him work on tasks that not specific to this iteration just to keep busy. Either way, it's the same issue as above, splitting up user story tasks. If someone can recommend an active Google agile development group that discusses these and other issues, that'll be great. Also, if you know of a free alternative to Pivotal Labs, let me know as well. I'm looking now at Agilo.

• Thread safe GUI programming

  I have been programming Java with swing for a couple of years now, and always accepted that GUI interactions had to happen on the Event Dispatch Thread. I recently started to use GTK+ for C applications and was unsurprised to find that GUI interactions had to be called on gtk_main. Similarly, I looked at SWT to see in what ways it was different to Swing and to see if it was worth using, and again found the UI thread idea, and I am sure that these 3 are not the only toolkits to use this model. I was wondering if there is a reason for this design i.e. what is the reason for keeping UI modifications isolated to a single thread. I can see why some modifications may cause issues (like modifying a list while it is being drawn), but I do not see why these concerns pass on to the user of the API. Is there a limit imposed by an operating system? Is there a good reason these concerns are not 'hidden' (i.e. some form of synchronization that is invisible to the user)? Is there any (even purely conceptual) way of creating a thread safe graphics library, or is such a thing actually impossible? I found this http://blogs.operationaldynamics.com/andrew/software/gnome-desktop/gtk-thread-awareness which seems to describe GTK differently to how I understood it (although my understanding was the same as many people's) How does this differ to other toolkits? Is it possible to implement this in Swing (as the EDT model does not actually prevent access from other threads, it just often leads to Exceptions)

• How to handle wildly varying rendering hardware / getting baseline

  I've recently started with mobile programming (cross-platform, also with desktop) and am encountering wildly differing hardware performance, in particular with OpenGL and the GPU. I know I'll basically have to adjust my rendering code but I'm uncertain of how to detect performance and what reasonable default settings are. I notice that certain shader functions are basically free in a desktop implemenation but can be unusable in a mobile device. The problem is I have no way of knowing what features will cause what performance issues on all the devices. So my first issue is that even if I allow configuring options I'm uncertain of which options I have to make configurable. I'm wondering also wheher one just writes one very configurable pipeline, or whether I should have 2 distinct options (high/low). I'm also unsure of where to set the default. If I set to the poorest performer the graphics will be so minimal that any user with a modern device would dismiss the game. If I set them even at some moderate point, the low end devices will basically become a slide-show. I was thinking perhaps that I just run some benchmarks when the user first installs and randomly guess what works, but I've not see a game do this before.
