  I wanted to profile the memory usage of a script. Here's the output before it was running: procs -----------memory---------- ---swap-- -----io---- -system-- ----cpu---- r b swpd free buff cache si so bi bo in cs us sy id wa 0 0 15624 186660 39460 439052 0 0 0 2 1 1 0 0 100 0 Here's the output while the script is running, at the point where free memory was at its lowest value: procs -----------memory---------- ---swap-- -----io---- -system-- ----cpu---- r b swpd free buff cache si so bi bo in cs us sy id wa 0 0 15624 11464 40312 473524 0 0 0 2 1 1 0 0 100 0 So free memory dropped by about 175 MB, and I expected that buff would increase by that amount. But it seems the other columns changed by relatively negligible amounts - how is this possible? Am I interpreting this wrong, or is some memory just not being accounted for in this output?

• Maximum Length Of IP Address: 15 (IPv4) & 39(IPv6)

  Problem You are designing a database table for a web application that requires to store IP address of users who visits the site. The IP address is required to be stored a character data in the table. To define size of the character column you need to know maximum length of IP address. So, what is the maximum length of an IP address? Solution The IPv4 version of IP address is in the following format 255.255.255.255 To store IPv4 address we require 15 characters. The IPv6 version of IP address is grouped into sets of 4 hex digits separated by colons, like the below 2001:0db8:85a3:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:7334 To store IPv6 address you require a 39 characters long column. Conclusion As IPv4 and IPv6 are the commonly use protocols, you better define a column with 39 characters length so that both the format address are saved in to the table without any issues. • How to deal with a CEO making all technical decision but with little technical knowledge ?

  Hi, Question posted anonymously for obvious reasons. I am working in a company with a dev group of 5-6 developers, and I am in a situation which I have a hard time dealing with. Every technical choice (language, framework, database, database scheme, configuration scheme, etc...) is decided by the CEO, often without much rationale. It is very hard to modify those choices, and his main argument consists in "I don't like this", even though we propose several alternative with detailed pros/cons. He will also decide to rewrite from scratch our core product without giving a reason why, and he never participates to dev meetings because he considers it makes things slower... I am already looking at alternative job opportunities, but I was wondering if there anything we (the developers) could do to improve the situation. Two examples which shocked me: he will ask us to implement something akin to configuration management, but he reject any existing framework because they are not written in the language he likes (even though the implementation language is irrelevant). He also expects us to be able to write those systems in a couple of days, "because it is very simple". he keeps rewriting from scratch on his own our core product because the current codebase is too bad (codebase whose design was his). We are at our third rewrite in one year, each rewrite worse than the previous one. Things I have tried so far is doing elaborate benchmarks on our product (he keeps complaining that our software is too slow, and justifies rewrites to make it faster), implement solutions with existing products as working proof instead of just making pros/cons charts, etc... But still 90 % of those efforts go to the trashbox (never with any kind of rationale behind he does not like it, again), and often get reprimanded because I don't do exactly as he wants (not realizing that what he wants is impossible).

  Recently John Resig (creator of the jQuery library) wrote on his twitter that "When it comes to hiring, I'll take a Github commit log over a resume any day.". As much as I respect that (motivating developers to give back to the community), it also puzzles me, as not all of us have the opportunity to do so, for a number of reasons (family, employer agreements, etc). How would you make a case for the non-contributor developer? Do you think that developers that do not contribute to open-source software are doomed from certain kinds of organizations?

• Windows Phone 7 event

  This might not be of interest to anyone living outside of the Netherlands, but I still wanted to share this. On march 10th the dutch .net usergroup dotNed (of which I am chairman) organizes a LAN party together with the company Sevensteps. Sevensteps is a big player in the Surface area: they are one of the few companies whose applications are part of the standard tools you get when you buy a Surface unit. They were also present at the CES in Las Vegas earlier this year to introduce the SUR40, as mentioned in my previous post. But they do not only develop software for the Surface, they also do a lot of interesting things on other platforms. One of these is Windows Phone 7, or WP7 in short. Sevensteps and dotNed have joined forces to organize a free full day event where we will develop a WP7 application. The people attending will be developers (experienced and not so experienced on WP7), designers and all other sorts of people you’d expect in a project team. The day will start around 9.00 am and will end when the app is finished. We will form teams of both experienced and not experienced developers so that we can learn from each other. Each team will have their own task to perform, and in the end all parts will be assembled to form a killer WP7 app. As with everything that dotNed does this event is free for everyone. Microsoft will pay for dinner, Sevensteps will provide the room, lunch and ideas (and their expertise of course) and the rest is up to us! • SonicWall HA "gotchas"?

  We're looking to move away from PFSense and CARP to a pair of SonicWall NSA 24001 configured in Active/Passive for High Availability. I've never dealt with SonicWall before, so is there anything I should know that their sales guy won't tell me? I'm aware that they had an issue with a lot of their devices shutting down connectivity because of a licensing fault, and they have an overtly complex management GUI (on the older devices at least), but are there any other big "gotchas" that I need to be aware of before committing a not insubstantial amount of money towards these devices? 1If you're outside the US, the SonicWall global sites suck balls. Use the US site for all your product research, and then use your local site when you're after local information.

• backface culling error (in world space)

  I write simple software renderer. In my pipeline i have stage of backface culling. But looks like it has some error (see picture). I perform culling right after world transformation (is it correct?). Can i perform culing RIGHT BEFORE view/proj transforms? In this case looks like culling will not depends of projection and it's not right?.. UPDATED 3: I found answer and will post it in two hours - again coz of reputation lack.

• MEF to the rescue in Task-it

  One of the frameworks that I chose to leverage in the development of my Silverlight 4 Task-It application is MEF, the Managed Extensibility Framework. Actually, that decision came while I was at a Silverlight Deep Dive session on the Microsoft campus in Redmond, WA, and came at the recommendation of John Papa (Microsoft Silverlight Evangelist) and Glenn Block (the MEF Maniac). If you are not familiar with MEF, its primary function is to provide a framework for extensibility in Silverlight applications, however, what I found is that MEF's capabilities go beyond just this. As a matter of fact, Microsoft announced at MIX this week that its new Silverlight Analytics Framework would use MEF for composition. • Humor in Documentation

  Is a small amount of lighthearted wording or humor acceptable in source code documentation? For example, I have an algorithm that has a message hop around a graph (network) until its path forms a cycle. When this happens it is removed from the queue of the node it last resided on which removes it from memory. I write that in a comment, and finish the comment with "Rest in peace, little guy". That serves very little documenting purpose, but it cheers me up a bit, and I imagine it might cheer up other people I'm working with as they read through the code. Is this an acceptable practice, or should my in-code documentation resemble as much as possible the speeches of 2004 presidential candidate John Kerry? ;-)

• How to convert an image to a .dwg file

  My girlfriend is making an art project where she is having an image printed and cut out on a metal plate. The firm responsible for doing this is demanding a .dwg file (and something called polyline; some sort of setting maybe?). Neither of us have heard about this file format, and I find the information about it quite confusing. Most pages seem to link to some schetchy "FooToBarConverter" software, that I frankly don't trust. Could someone please enlighten us on what we need to do, or point to some safe and preferably free software that could do this? (An explanation of the dwg format and the polyline thing would also be much appreciated)

• Migrating Printers from XP to 7 (using USMT 4.0)

  I'm attempting to migrate a user from an XP machine to a 7 machine, using USMT 4.0 (User State Migration Tool, from Microsoft). For some reason the migration of printers isn't working, and none of the topics at Microsoft's TechNet are helping me out. They also mention a folder named DIManifests, which has to be present in the USMT directory. I've tried everything, but with no success. Can anyone please help me sort this one out? Apparently it's a bug, but there's gotta be some workaround. Thank you!

• Deliver email to Gmail AND Office 365?

  We moved our Office app hosting from Google Apps to Office 365. Many of us miss Google Apps, especially its superior search functionality. The pressure to use Office 365 has disappeared; many (but not all) of us would like to go back to Google Apps. Is it possible to configure our domain's mail delivery so that messages are delivered to both Google Apps's Gmail and Office 365, allowing users to choose which platform they prefer? If so, what are the options? Google Apps documentation specifies the ability to deliver messages to a secondary mail server using routing configuration. Currently our MX records are point to Office 365. If I change the MX records to point to Google Apps Mails servers, is the "Office 365 MX record address" the address I would want to use for a Google Apps Routing Target?

What is the procedure to correct it? @Lèse majesté: Incorrect results are the results that do not contain any of the searched keywords in them like in this my question @John Conde, yes I believe it is the right defitition. @DisgruntedGoat, even when there are a lot of results by keycaptcha for "Past 24 hours", the Google.com presents results only on reCAPTCHA. Anyway, they are different from those by google if to search by "keycaptcha" (in quotes) and by other search engines. • GAC and SharePoint

  SharePoint 2010 Training: more information GAC and SharePoint have had a funny love & hate relationship. In 2007, SharePoint and GAC fell in love. GAC was about the only practical alternative to deploying custom code. Here is a dirty secret, based on completely unscientific and unfounded research, I can tell you that 99% of SharePoint code written, ended up in the GAC. Yes, I know GAC rhymes with hack, crack, smack, and even mac, but still it was the better alternative. You could write CAS policies and put your DLLs in the bin folder, but it was mighty inconvenient to both write, and maintain. Most of us never did it. There are still some SharePoint developers out there insisting on the bin approach – well, get over it; you’re not winning the fight. CAS is about as outdated as Samantha Fox anyway. It was hot at one point though. So all that code that ended up in the GAC caused lots and lots of headache. Clearly, Microsoft had to get us off the crack, uhh .. I mean the GAC.
