Ruby - calling constructor without arguments & removal of new line characters

I am a newbie at Ruby, I have written down a sample program. I dont understand the following: Why constructor without any arguments are not called in Ruby? How do we access the class variable outside the class' definition? Why does it always append newline characters at the end of the string? How do we strip it? I have a person object, which can have unlimited number of first names. So the first names are another object. ie person --- name --- name --- name What I want to do is write an nhiberate query using which will get me a person who has certain names. so one query might be find someone whose names are alison and jane and philippa, then next query may be one to find someone whose names are alison and jane. I only want to return people who have all the names I'm search on. So far I've got ICriteria criteria = session.CreateCriteria(typeof (Person)); criteria.CreateAlias("Names", "name"); ICriterion expression = null; foreach (string name in namesToFind) { if (expression == null) { expression = Expression.Like("name.Value", "%" + name + "%"); } else { expression = Expression.Or( expression, Expression.Like("name.Value", "%" + name + "%")); } } if (expression != null) criteria.Add(expression); But this is returning every person with ANY of the names I'm searching on, not ALL the names. How can I optimize retrieving lowest edit distance from a large table in SQL?

Hey, I'm having troubles optimizing this Levenshtein Distance calculation I'm doing. SQL Server full text query across multiple tables - why so slow?

Hi. I'm trying to understand the performance of an SQL Server 2008 full-text query I am constructing. The following query, using a full-text index, returns the correct results immediately: SELECT O.ID, O.Name FROM dbo.EventOccurrence O WHERE FREETEXT(O.Name, 'query') ie, all EventOccurrences with the word 'query' in their name. And the following query, using a full-text index from a different table, also returns straight away: SELECT V.ID, V.Name FROM dbo.Venue V WHERE FREETEXT(V.Name, 'query') ie. all Venues with the word 'query' in their name. But if I try to join the tables and do both full-text queries at once, it 12 seconds to return: SELECT O.ID, O.Name FROM dbo.EventOccurrence O INNER JOIN dbo.Event E ON O.EventID = E.ID INNER JOIN dbo.Venue V ON E.VenueID = V.ID WHERE FREETEXT(E.Name, 'search') OR FREETEXT(V.Name, 'search') Here is the execution plan: http://uploadpad.com/files/query.PNG From my reading, I didn't think it was even possible to make a free text query across multiple tables in this way, so I'm not sure I am understanding this correctly. Note that if I remove the WHERE clause from this last query then it returns all results within a second, so it's definitely the full-text that is causing the issue here. Can someone explain (i) why this is so slow and (ii) if this is even supported / if I am even understanding this correctly. Thanks in advance for your help.

I serially collect information from forms into arrays like so: list = {"name" : "John", "email" : "[email protected]", "country" : "Canada", "color" : "blue"}; identifier = "first_round"; list = {"name" : "Harry", "email" : "[email protected]", "country" : "Germany"}; identifier = "second_round"; I want to combine them into something (I may have braces where I need brackets) like: list_all = { "first_round" : {"name" : "John", "email" : "[email protected]", "country" : "Canada", "color" : "blue"} , "second_round" : {"name" : "Harry", "email" : "[email protected]", "country" : "Germany"} }; so I can access them like: alert(list_all.first_round.name) -> John (Note: the name-values ("name", "email", "color") in the two list-arrays are not quite the same, the number of items in each list-array is limited but not known in advance; I need to serially add only one array to the previous structure each round and there may be any number of rounds, i.e. "third-round" : {...}, "fourth-round" : {...} and so on.) Ultimately, I'd like it to be well-parsed for JSON. I use the jquery library, if that helps.

Background: Our company selected a workflow tool that has some "interersting" UI restrictions. jqGrid has been identified as one of best ways to overcome these restrictions. Consequently, the answers to this question need to be restricted to functionlity available within the jqGrid space. It pains me to pose this question and I know you will tempted to go down a million other paths - most that we have already traveled before. :( Question: Can jqGrid populate a column as a result of performing math on two other columns. The source of those two columns is in our control so we can "guarantee" that numeric data will be returned. Also, the result is something that we simplay want to display on demand but not store yet. Best way to determine variable type and treat each one differently in F#

I have a function that will create a select where clause, but right now everything has to be a string. I would like to look at the variable passed in and determine what type it is and then treat it properly. I have a class with attributes which have a reference to another attribute of this class. I could change the Device class to: class Device(object): interface=Interface() value1=Value(interface, name="value1") value2=Value(interface, name="value2") def __init__(self, port): self.interface=Interface() self.interface.port=port So this is also not working: The values still have the reference to the original interface instance and the self.interface is just another instance... PHP and MySQL validating problem

I'm trying to check if a color is already entered into the database if it is the color should not be entered and stored into the database and the following error code <p>This color has already been entered!</p> should be displayed. But for some reason I cant get this to work, can someone please help me? The color names are entered into $_POST['color'] which is an array entered by the user. I want to deploy an application to a list of servers. I have all of the build issues taken care of, but I'm having trouble publishing to a list of servers. The values for Name and Address are set correctly. However the value of set gets lost(since it is @XMLTransient it gets ignored) Is there any way of ensuring that it is still set in the object which has been unmarshalled? Some other annotation which I can use?

Incorrect component when querying immediately after insert using NHibernate

I have the following mapping for my table in MySql: <class name="Tag, namespace" table="tags" > <id name="id" type="Int32" unsaved-value="0"> <generator class="native"></generator> </id> <property name="name" type="String" not-null="true"></property> <component name="record_dates" class="DateMetaData, namespace" > <property name="created_at" type="DateTime" not-null="true"></property> <property name="updated_at" type="DateTime" not-null="true"></property> </component> </class> As you see the record_dates property is defined as a component field of type DateMetaDate. Both created_at and updated_at fields in 'tags' table are updated via triggers. Thus I can insert a new record like such: var newTag = new Tag() { name = "some string here" } Int32 id = (Int32)Session.Save(tag); Session.Flush(); ITag t = Session.Get<Tag>(id); ViewData["xxx"] = t.name; // -----> not null ViewData["xxx"] = t.record_dates.created_at; // -----> is null However when querying the same record back immediately after it was inserted the record_dates field ends up null even though in the table those fields have got values. Can any one please point out why the Session.Get ignores getting everything back from the table? is it because it caches the newly created record for which the records_dates is null? If so how can it be told to ignore the cached version?

TouchXML to read in twitter feed for iphone app
