• javaws crashes, error in ld-linux-x86-64.so.2

  I am running Ubuntu 11.10 64 bit client as Dom0 and Xen. I am having problems getting java up and running. Java itself seems to work fine, however I get strange errors, for example when I start javaws. I tried different versions and always get the same errors. I tried openjdk 1.6 and 1.7 as well as sunjava6 and 7. I alway get an error in the same lib All other applications are working fine, so it seems ld-linux-x86-64.so.2 is working fine. Any hints what could be wrong? • One site being on a subdirectory of another. Does google count this against you?

  I have created two similar websites (relating to monetary systems). So far, one appears to be loved by Google and the other hated. I'm struggling to work out why. This is a mystery to me because both sites were created by me with the same design philosophy, both in pure html. Both are packed to the rafters with references to, and information about, their respective subjects. One issue I'm worried may be the cause is to do with the location of the sites. I got a web hosting package from hostmonster.com for the successful one, but less liked one is just an "add-on" which sits on a subdirectory of the successful one. I wonder if Google somehow detects this and treats it as a less significant website? EDIT: Just to clarify, even though one site is an add-on that sits on a subdirectory of the other, the URL is arranged to look like it is a root. I.e. the unpopular site can be accessed directly with a simple www.myunpopularsite.com name, without specifying any subdirectory. EDIT: Just in case its important... say the popular site is called pop.com and the unpopular one unpop.com. In the webspace I've purchased, there is a directory called public_html. This is where I put the index.htm and all the other files of my popular site. When I purchased the add-on unpop.com. I made a subdirectory of public_html called unpop. It is within this "public_html\unpop\" that I place the index.htm and all the other files of my unpopular site. Typing www.unpop.com into the address bar of a browser links directly to the contents of "public_html\unpop\" and the user is not aware that this site is sitting on a subdirectory of another site. BUT if you type "www.pop.com/unpop" into the address bar of a browser you DO see the unpopular site.

• Wine on Ubuntu 12.04 64bit. wine : Depends: wine1.4 but it is not going to be installed

• Added resolution not working after upgrading to 12.04

  After upgrading, my screen resolution (added by xrandr comands on the start) did not work like before. Messages appear showing some errors (that i have never had in 11.10). "No se pudo aplicar la configuración almacenada para los monitores"/"Can't apply the stored configuration for the monitors." This script didn't work either. xrandr --newmode "1280x1024_60.00" 109.00 1280 1368 1496 1712 1024 1027 1034 1063 -hsync +vsync xrandr --addmode VGA1 1280x1024_60.00 xrandr --output VGA1 --mode 1280x1024_60.00 I also tryed deleting monitors.xml but, nothing. This only erase the window message. It's been sayd that ##It's a normal buggy and well know problem for Pc's with Intel integrated video cards.## The new version of gnome-settings-daemon stores its configuration information in dconf rather than gconf. I tryed something, but the problem persist. This is what i did. Install the dconf-tools package, and then run dconf-editor. In the tree on the left, navigate org - gnome - settings-daemon - plugins - xrandr. Uncheck the active checkbox. restart your XServer (Ctrl+Alt+Backspace) (It didn't worked out for me, but it may be helpful to someone)

• Farseer tutorial for the absolute beginners

  This post is inspired (and somewhat a direct copy) of a couple of posts Emanuele Feronato wrote back in 2009 about Box2D (his tutorial was ActionScript 3 based for Box2D, this is C# XNA for the Farseer Physics Engine). Here’s what we’re building: What is Farseer The Farseer Physics Engine is a collision detection system with realistic physics responses to help you easily create simple hobby games or complex simulation systems. Farseer was built as a .NET version of Box2D (based on the Box2D.XNA port of Box2D). While the constructs and syntax has changed over the years, the principles remain the same. This tutorial will walk you through exactly what Emanuele create for Flash but we’ll be doing it using C#, XNA and the Windows Phone platform. The first step is to download the library from its home on CodePlex. If you have NuGet installed, you can install the library itself using the NuGet package that but we’ll also be using some code from the Samples source that can only be obtained by downloading the library. Once you download and unpacked the zip file into a folder and open the solution, this is what you will get: The Samples XNA WP7 project (and content) have all the demos for Farseer. There’s a wealth of info here and great examples to look at to learn. The Farseer Physics XNA WP7 project contains the core libraries that do all the work. DebugView XNA contains an XNA-ready class to let you view debug data and information in the game draw loop (which you can copy into your project or build the source and reference the assembly). The downloaded version has to be compiled as it’s only available in source format so you can do that now if you want (open the solution file and rebuild everything). If you’re using the NuGet package you can just install that. We only need the core library and we’ll be copying in some code from the samples later. Lines 8: Declare _world variable of type class World. World is the main object to interact with the Farseer engine. It stores all the joints and bodies, and is responsible for stepping through the simulation. Lines 12-17: Create the graphics device we’ll be rendering on. This is an XNA component and we’re just setting it to be the same size as the phone and toggling it to be full screen (no system tray). Lines 34: We create a SpriteFont here by adding it to the project. It’s called “font” because that’s what the DebugView uses but you can name it whatever you want (and if you’re not using DebugView for your production app you might have several fonts). Lines 37-44: We create the physics environment that Farseer uses to contain all the objects by specifying it here. We’re using Vector2.UnitY*10 to represent the gravity to be used in the environment. In other words, 10 units going in a downward motion. Lines 46-56: We create the DebugViewXNA here. This is copied from the […] from the code you downloaded and provides the ability to render all entities onto the screen. In a production release you’ll be doing the rendering yourself of each object but we cheat a bit for the demo and let the DebugView do it for us. The other thing it can provide is to render out a panel of debugging information while the simulation is going on. This is useful in tracking down objects, figuring out how something works, or just keeping track of what’s in the engine. Lines 49-67: Here we create a rigid body (Farseer only supports rigid bodies) to represent the floor that we’ll drop objects onto. We create it by using one of the Farseer factories and specifying the width and height. The ConvertUnits class is copied from the samples code as-is and lets us toggle between display units (pixels) and simulation units (usually metres). We’re creating a floor that’s 480 pixels wide and 50 pixels high (converting them to SimUnits for the engine to understand). We also position it near the bottom of the screen. Values are in metres and when specifying values they refer to the centre of the body object. Lines 77-78: The game Update method fires 30 times a second, too fast to be creating objects this quickly. So we use a variable to track the elapsed seconds since the last update, accumulate that value, then create a new box to drop when 1 second has passed. Lines 89-94: We create a box the same way we created our floor (coming up with a random width and height for the box). Lines 96-101: We set the box to be Dynamic (rather than Static like the floor object) and position it somewhere along the top of the screen. And now you created the world. Gravity does the rest and the boxes fall to the ground. Here’s the result: Farseer Physics Engine Demo using XNA Lines 105: We must update the world at every frame. We do this with the Step method which takes in the time interval. [more] Lines 108-114: Body objects are added to the world but never automatically removed (because Farseer doesn’t know about the display world, it has no idea if an item is on the screen or not). Here we just loop through all the entities and anything that’s dropped off the screen (below the bottom) gets removed from the World. This keeps our entity count down (the simulation never has more than 30 or 40 objects in the world no matter how long you run it for). Too many entities and the app will grind to a halt. Lines 125-130: Farseer knows nothing about the UI so that’s entirely up to you as to how to draw things. Farseer is just tracking the objects and moving them around using the physics engine and it’s rules. You’ll still use XNA to draw items (using the SpriteBatch.Draw method) so you can load up your usual textures and draw items and pirates and dancing zombies all over the screen. Instead in this demo we’re going to cheat a little. In the sample code for Farseer you can download there’s a project called DebugView XNA. This project contains the DebugViewXNA class which just handles iterating through all the bodies in the world and drawing the shapes. So we call the RenderDebugData method here of that class to draw everything correctly. In the case of this demo, we just want to draw Shapes so take a look at the source code for the DebugViewXNA class as to how it extracts all the vertices for the shapes created (in this case simple boxes) and draws them. You’ll learn a *lot* about how Farseer works just by looking at this class. That’s it, that’s all. Simple huh? Hope you enjoy the code and library. Physics is hard and requires some math skills to really grok. The Farseer Physics Engine makes it pretty easy to get up and running and start building games. In future posts we’ll get more in-depth with things you can do with the engine so this is just the beginning. Enjoy!

• Lexmark E240 printing issues

  I have Lexmark E240 laser printer. I have been using it with 12.04 (32bit) for 2 years with no significant issues. Since lexmark does not support this printer on linux, I used alternatives drivers that were suggested by the community, such as HP-lasterjet, E238, generic PS, etc. They all worked fine, more or less. After upgrading to 14.04 (64bit fresh install) I tried to configure the printer as before, but now I have problems. The test page is ok, but when printing, most of the times, the first page in the document will be printed very partially and in 300% zoom. Next page might be ok. If I turn off the printer and back on, the first page might be ok, but in the next print job, it will be broken again. I used all the above printer options. Same results. I did NOT install the lexmark drivers since they are intended for 12.04 and the package manager report that it is in "bad quality" (don't know why). Does anyone has any experience with this printer in 14.04 64bit ?

  You can create package folders through SSMS, but you may also wish to do this as part of a deployment process or installation. In this case you will want programmatic method for managing folders, so how can this be done? The short answer is, go and look at the table msdb.dbo. sysdtspackagefolders90. This where folder information is stored, using a simple parent and child hierarchy format. • The best way to learn how to extend Orchard

  We do have tutorials on the Orchard site, but we can't cover all topics, and recently I've found myself more and more responding to forum questions by pointing people to an existing module that was solving a similar problem to the one the question was about. I really like this way of learning by example and from the expertise of others. This is one of the reasons why we decided that modules would by default come in source code form that we compile dynamically. it makes them easy to understand and easier to modify for your own purposes. Hackability FTW! But how do you crack open a module and look at what's inside? You can do it in two different ways. First, you can just install the module from the gallery, directly from your Orchard instance's admin panel. Once you've done that, you can just look into your Modules directory under the web site. There is now a subfolder with the name of the new module that contains a csproj that you can open in Visual Studio or add to your Orchard solution. Second, you can simply download the package (it's NuGet) and rename it to a .zip extension. NuGet being based on Zip, this will open just fine in Windows Explorer: What you want to dig into is the Content/Modules/[NameOfTheModule] folder, which is where the actual code is.   I've been struggling with how to get my project going. I've got an old software package that is in need of desparate rewrite. I haven't compiled the source code since 2004. It still sells, it's stable but does require the “Run this program in compatibility mode for:” on a lot of the newer windows systems. It's also one of those hard coded 640 X 480 screen resolution programs. Yuck! I can't seem to get started with this rewrite. I'm constantly fiddling around with different things. I'll play around with different fluid layouts for a while. Then I start looking around at how the main menu should work/look. I quickly find out that there's this thing called "Cool Bars" and I'll spend hours playing with that. Then I start thinking about stuff like "Oh I need to make sure that the screen sizes are preserved so when the application gets relaunched it remebers how the screens were positioned." Which leads to what happens if they have two monitors? Which leads to what happens if they have a quad screen? Yikes it's got to stop. I have always been a slow starter. I think about stuff long and hard up front. This has always plagued me. Once I get my mind made up then bam... I'm off and running. I'm looking for advice from some other one-person software companies that can help someone like me get off to a quicker start?

• Unwanted Chinese language got set in system settings

  I was discussing on the Ubuntu users list how to type in in Hindi (Indic language) in Libre Office and about a package installation problem. I have made some changes in system settings, following suggestions by some users. However, this morning when I did a reboot I am unable to see English as my default language. My system is showing some Chinese characters which I do not understand. All I wanted was to use Libre Office for a particular document in Hindi. What happened is that even Gmail is opening in Chinese. The system settings folder and others are also opening in Chinese. I am unable to use the system now. I have uploaded the snapshots here: please have a look. Upon a reboot, I was asked to rename all folders. Gmail opening in Chinese This is how menu on my system looks: half English and half Chinese Notice that in the third snapshot the calendar and menu are appearing in Chinese. I want the original US English menus and folder names back. I just wanted to type a document with Lohit Hindi font in Libre Office. I use Ubuntu 11.10. I do not use Unity, only Gnome desktop. I installed gnome-session-fallback a long time back and have been using that ever since. How do I get back to all English submenus and English folder names? I have a US English Keyboard and I use only US English. This thing which is now somehow set is unwanted.

• Black screen with thinkpad edge e525, AMD radeon HD before and after installation, plymouth?

  I have a new thinkpad edge e525 (which should work) and wanted to try ubuntu (first linux experience). With the ubuntu desktop-cd I had a blackscreen before installation, I could fix that with nomodeset. After the installation, when rebooting I got the black screen again. First I see some ubuntu colour with a green busted stripe. I have the same problem with the live boot, also tried mint live, the stripe gets pink. I installed xubuntu 64bit from an alternate cd and I didnt have problems until de reboot after the installation. Same problem, just a black screen with the green stripe than blackscreen. I tried several things: adding nomodeset to the bootmenu, but than I get: No connection to plymouth and it is stuck at checking the battery status. I tried to replace quiet splash with text. Didnt work either. actually one time I saw a blue booting image before that. I managed to get a root command though via the recovery boot. I didnt dare to just remove the plymouth package. Can I just delete plymouth or do I have to deinstall it as described in several ways. (Problem is, right now the notebook doesnt have a internet connection. And I dont know how to manage it with a usb stick?) Or do I have to install the AMD catalyst driver manually? (Again, how can I do that with an usb stick) I also tried this: Ubuntu hits a black screen after boot. Is there any solution without internet? And if I need internet which is the right one? Please explain step by step what I have to write and so on! Thank you! also tried: set gfxpayload=text and: just remove splash and adding vesafb.nonsense=1 to the grub editor, because I couldnt find it anywhere

  I have a KVM host (12.04.5) that I have been installing guests on in variety of ways. I just noticed recently one of my guests was running a generic kernel when I'm fairly certain I specified minimum virtual machine during install from a 12.04.2 server iso. From what I understand it should be running a stripped down kernel "optimized" for VMs. I set up another server to test, this time using a 14.04.1, and sure enough I ended up with uname -r returning 3.13.0-32-generic. It seems that if I use an .iso to install, I end up with generic regardless. However building with the vmbuilder ... --flavour virtual --suite precise ... (I don't have trusty available yet) script gives me an ubuntu 12.04.5 LTS system running kernel 3.2.0-67-virtual. The server FAQ mentions I should be getting the virtual kernel. What are practical advantages of using linux-image-virtual kernel? gives me the impression that it doesn't really matter functionally (in my case I only have a couple VMs running). I first thought was maybe I was somehow not applying the correct options because the installer F4 menu doesn't really give great feedback if the mode has been selected or not. Looking in the log /var/log/installers/syslog I see Command line: file=/cdrom/preceed/ubuntu-server-minimalvm.seed ... I know that I can install the virtual kernel package down the road, but why am I not, or should I be getting the virtual flavor of kernel from an ISO install when doing an minimum VM install?

  In a new interview up on otn/java, titled “Java Champion Dick Wall on the Virtues of Scala (Part 2),” Dick Wall explains why, after a long career in programming exploring Lisp, C, C++, Python, and Java, he has finally settled on Scala as his language of choice. From the interview: “I was always on the lookout for a language that would give me both Python-like productivity and simplicity for just writing something and quickly having it work and that also offers strong performance, toolability, and type safety (all of which I like in Java). Scala is simply the first language that offers all those features in a package that suits me. Programming in Scala feels like programming in Python (if you can think it, you can do it), but with the benefit of having a compiler looking over your shoulder and telling you that you have the wrong type here or the wrong method name there.The final ‘aha!’ moment came about a year and a half ago. I had a quick task to complete, and I started writing it in Python (as I have for many years) but then realized that I could probably write it just as fast in Scala. • Book Review: Professional ASP.Net MVC4

  The past few weeks have been particularly busy as I continue to dedicate a bigger portion of my free time to refreshing my memory and enhancing my knowledge of best practices pertaining to technologies we plan on using for a major upcoming project. In this blog post, I will be providing a brief overview of my latest reading “Professional ASP.Net MVC4” by Jon Galloway, Phil Haack, Brad Wilson and K. Scott Allen. This book is a must read for web developers looking to enhance their MVC expertise with best practices and tips shared from recognized industry experts. This book takes the reader on a 16-chapter long journey towards being a better ASP.NET MVC developer with chapter 16 putting all information covered in practical context by dissecting the implementation of Nuget.org, a real-life open-source, ASP.NET MVC project.  All code samples referenced in this book are conveniently accessible via NuGet, a free, open-source Library package manager that installs as a Visual Studio Extension. Chapters 2, 3 and 4 thoroughly cover MVC’s various components: Controllers “C”, Views “V” and Models “M” respectively. • Software Center empty "No usefulness from server" "no username in config file"

  I upgraded to 12.04 LTS and ran Software Center while a few things were running, and crashed. (2 GB RAM on a Netbook.) On reboot, Ubuntu One interface would not find any programs, neither installed (to run) nor available for download. So I launched Software Center, which opens, but does nothing. I click "Close" button and get a "Force Quit?" box. So I quit. Did research, learned to run Software Center from Terminal: 2012-04-29 23:14:36,978 - softwarecenter.backend.reviews - WARNING - Could not get usefulness from server, no username in config file Then tried the below without success: Reinstallation of software center: sudo apt-get install --reinstall software-center Didn't work. Found this in a post: remove the config file for software-center then log out and back in sudo rm -rf ~/.config/software-center Didn't work. Reinstalled Software Center with Synaptic Package Manager. Still no dice! And I am a Linux newbie, so I don't know where the Dickens that config file is. Help appreciated.

  I can't seem to fix or update, upgrade VLC AT ALL; this is what I get when trying to install, I had vlc before, but was not working properly so I uninstalled it; then I try to Install again to have the full properties. So now I cannot install as I get this message, I have tried everything and have checked with your site for additional info; any suggestions to someone who is new to Ubuntu and Linux altogether?? • How to integrate a PHP CMS with paypal so that only users who completed a payment can register and authenticate?

  I am currently using a PHP CMS - cmsmadesimple - in order to create a website where services will be sold. I intend to use Paypal 'Buy Now' buttons in order to offer a few packages that will be renewable every 1-month or every 3-months and that grant access to the secure content of the website for a given period of time. Everything is going well so far but I am somewhat at loss for the user registration process as I have a few constraints I would like to use and it would be nice to automate the process if possible. Here are the constraints : User should be able to register to my website and choose a password himself Only users that paid should be able to register Access permissions should be disabled automatically after the service period if the package is not renewed And here is the process which I am thinking of : User clicks 'buy' on my website User is redirected on Paypal and completes the payment The paypal email used to pay should be returned to my server and somehow stored If it is a new email, user needs to register to my website (else if it is a returning customer, the deactivation flag for payment stopped should be removed to give back access) If a user does not renew his subscription, there should be a deactivation flag automatically set to the email used in order to lock access until next payment. Ideally, no human intervention is needed. What is the best way to implement all this? I am a bit at loss. I found this article that explained a few things and even has a nice code snippet, except that I'm not sure where to plug it. Thanks all

• Does this licensing clause allow redistribution of this application?

  As a software developer, I find a frequent need to create icons for my applications. Nothing has ever worked as well as IcoFX for this purpose. Unfortunately, the program is no longer free - but I still have the installer for an older version. My question is whether or not I can distribute copies of the installer. The license agreement contains the following pertinent clauses: 6. All redistributions of the Software's files must retain all copyright notices and web site addresses that are currently in place, and must include this list of conditions without modification. 7. None of the Software's files may be redistributed for profit or as part of another Software package without express written permission of the Author. 10. The Author reserves his rights to modify this agreement in the future. The first two clauses would seem to suggest that I can legally distribute verbatim copies of the installer but the last clause has me confused. If the author modifies the agreement and removes the ability to distribute copies, does it apply to my copy that I downloaded a while back?

• Terminal closing itself after 14.04 upgrade

  All was fine in 12.04, in this case I'm using virtualbox in Windows. Last days the warning message about my Ubuntu version no longer being supported was coming up pretty often, so, yesterday I finally decided to upgrade. The upgrading process ran ok, no errors, no warnings. After rebooting the errors started to happen. Just after booting up there were some errors about video, gnome, and video textures (sorry I didn't care in that moment so I don't remember well). Luckly that went away after installing VirtualBox additions. But the big problem here is that I can't use the terminal. It opens Ok when pressing control+alt+t, but most of the commands cause instant closing. For example, df, ls, mv, cd... usually work, although it has closed few times. But 'find' causes instant close. 'apt-get' update kills it too, just after it gets the package list from the sources, when it starts processing them. I've tried xterm, everything works and I have none of that problems. I have tried reinstalling konsole, bash-static, bash-completion, but nothing worked. I have no idea what to do as there is no error message to search for the cause. It seems something related to bash, but that's all I know.
