• Using Linux vs Windows for development

  On my servers I run everything on Linux/ Apache, but for offline preparation before upload of the projects I'm using Windows (Vista) with a local Apache/ WAMP, PHP, Python, GD_image installation and so on. My question, would it be much easier in terms of setting up a good environment if I were to use Linux, e.g. Ubuntu distribution, as development OS for these things? Would you know some pros and cons when it comes to Windows vs Linux in terms of web development? (As I'm using mostly web apps these days, switching the OS might be less of a problem. I would need a good replacement for my image editor, though, as I prefer Corel PhotoPaint and PSP4 over Gimp, last time I tried.)

• Possible to register Selenium RC's with the Hudson Selenium Grid Hub w/o the RC's being slaves in th

  I am trying to get Hudson to run my ruby based selenium tests. I have installed the Selenium Grid plugin, but I don't want to have the RC's running as slaves in a Hudson cluster. The reason for this is I don't want to waste the next six years of my life trying to configure each of my projects in various Windows environments. Hudson currently pulls each project from Github and builds it just fine. With a regular Selenium Grid setup, I am able to edit the grid_configuration.yml file to represent the various environments I wish to tests against, then pass environment variables to the rake task that runs the test i.e. which browser/platfom to run on and the URL of the application under test -- usually a port on the hub machine running in a specific environment. In this way, the machines on which the RC's run don't need to know anything about the source code of my apps, they just need to have selenium-grid installed and have registered with the hub. Is there a way of elegantly emulating this with Hudson?

But when I click, the vote number can not be updated immediately.   I have an app in J2EE with a couple of projects. Got my .war project that communicates with a EJB business project which has access to some Data. I have an entity which has some information about places, and I want to show a collection of those places in a single map on a JSF page. I have a Collection of coordinates to be assigned as points on a polyline in Google maps, and I've got this collection as a return of a java function of the jsf page, but I dont know how to get this collection from jsf and then how to make the map work I'll be very greatful if someone can give me some jsf code as an example. (and if someone knows how to set the autoReshape attribute for maps in jsf using javascript, please tell me the secret!!!!) Thanks a lot.

  I am currently a single BI developer over a corporate datawarehouse and cube. I use SQL Server 2008, SSAS, and SSIS as my basic toolkit. I use Visual Studio +BIDS and TFS for my IDE and source control. I am about to take on multiple projects with an offshore vendor and I am worried about managing change. My major concern is manging merges and changes between me and the offshore team. Merging and managing changes to SQL & XML for just one person is bad enough but with multiple developers it seems like a nightmare. Any thoughts on how best to structure development knowing that sometimes there is no way to avoid multiple individuals making changes to the same file?

  Hi, I just started practicing TDD in my projects. I'm developing a project now using php/zend/mysql and phpunit/dbunit for testing. I'm just a bit distracted on the idea of encapsulation and the test driven approach. My idea behind encapsulation is to hide access to several object functionalities. To make it more clear, private and protected functions are not directly testable(unless you will create a public function to call it). So I end up converting some private and protected functions to public functions just to be able to test them. I'm really violating the principles of encapsulation to give way to micro function testability. Is this the correct way of doing it?

• Uses of Erlang in Telecom

  I'm a web developer and a college student majoring in telecommunications. This means I'm decent at programming and I know a little about telecom networks (at a high, non-technical level). I keep reading that Erlang is used all over the telecom industry (supposedly for its performance). I'm wondering if there's anyway I can combine my programming skills with my telecommunications major with Erlang. Is most of the Erlang/telecom stuff closed source? Are there any open source telecom projects written Erlang? UPDATE: sipwiz's comment makes me think in terms of a question larger than "uses of Erlang". How can I leverage a high-level understanding of telecom networks and the telecom regulatory environment with programming. I hope this hasn't veered too off-topic for SO.

• Grafting Scala 2.8 into a Netbeans NBAndroid Project...What steps am I missing?

  Hi All; Due to Apple's recent T+C hijinks, I've become interested in developing for Android. Anyways, I'm trying to get a mixed-language Android 2.1 project going in Netbeans 6.8 (with the NBAndroid 0.10 plugin). The two languages being Java and Scala(2.8 head build). To give you a basic idea of what the app does right now, it's just a simple "Hello World" app. To get this to build, I've modified the projects's build.xml file: -- -injars ${scala-library}(!META-INF/MANIFEST.MF,!library.properties) -outjars "${build.classes.dir}/classes.min.jar" -libraryjars "${file.reference.android.jar}" -dontwarn -dontoptimize -dontobfuscate -keep public class * extends android.app.Activity -keep public class scala.xml.include.sax.Main** I've gotten the project so that it'll build, but it errors on startup in my Android Emulator(inside the emulator Android tells me my application has stopped unexpectedly). So my questions are: Does anyone see what I may be doing wrong? And is there any way to get access to the logs that the emulator must create? thanks Mike Kohout

  Are there any repositories around for open sourced iPhone components? For instance, I have found myself needing to create several new types of table cells to mimic some of Apple's existing functionality (for instance, all the different types of table cells present in the Settings application). I can't imagine I'm alone here. Where do you go to find open sourced reusable components, or do you just write and hoard your own? Update: I know there are open source full projects around (see this question), but rummaging through them and picking and choosing still leads to significant duplication of effort. • Android ant script workaround?

  It appears that, in the transition between the Android 1.1 sdk and 1.5, Google radically changed how ant scripts using AAPT can build Android projects. Previously they support args allowing developers to specify source, res, asset, and a manifest for a particular build. Now, they seem to allow developers to specify only a single folder containing everything. While I could rewrite all our build scripts to work in this new way, I rather like our current system (as it doesn't require more hours of work that I don't have). To that end, has anyone figured out how to go back to the pre 1.5 method of ant script building? Further, has anyone found a rational reason for this change?

  Okay today, as most of you noticed Framework 4.0 has been released. I've been working on a project which is being built on framework 3.5. Since I want to use dynamic keyword and most of the asp.net features like Tableless Menu Control, ClientIDMode and clean web.config etc. I am kinda urging to migrate the unfinished project to 4.0 but I am little hesitating about that.Some times I think it is way better to wait for SP1. So what do you think about it? You guys will migrate to unfinished projects or will still hang out with 3.5 for a while. Thanks.

• Integrating Tomcat7 and Eclipse Helios on Snow Leopard

  I am trying to write a "Hello World" web application using Tomcat and Eclipse, in order to familiarize myself with building Tomcat projects. So far I've gleaned from Google searches that I need to install Eclipse Web Tools Platform (WTP) to go ahead with it. But when I go to Help-Install New Software I can't find any software update site that is hosting WTP. My default "Available Software Sites" are Helios, Mylyn for Eclipse Helios, and the Eclipse Project Updates. Do I need to add a new software update site to install WTP? If so, what is the URL? If not, where can I find WTP? Thanks in advance.

I want something like that for each in settings module or INSTALLED_APPS (not starting with django.* or 3rdparty.*) give me a auto documentation output based on docstring and autogen documentation and run tests before git commit btw. I tried doing .rst files by hand with .. automodule:: module_name :members: but is sucks for such a big project, and it does not works for settings Is there an autogen method or something? I am not tied to sphinx, is there a better solution for my problem?

• Make jqGrid fill it's container

  I am using the jQuery layout plugin and the jqGrid plugin in one of my projects and they work great except for a little problem... I want the jqGrid to fill up completely the pane (jQuery layout pane) that contains it. Resizing the pane should resize the jqGrid, closing the pane should hide the jqGrid, etc, etc... Both jqGrid and jQuery Layout provide callbacks but when I use them the page layout breaks horribly. • Visual Studio 2008 freezing when editing aspx/master pages

  Visual Studio freezes up continually when I'm editing master pages or aspx files. Here's what I've tried that have not helped: restarting VS only working with few files open at a time Disabled all addins (resharper etc.) deleted .suo and .user files changed default editor from Web Form Editor and Master Page Editor to HTML Editor installed SP1 I don't have tons of files - 3 Master pages and maybe 30 aspx files. It is a asp.net mvc project. All I have to do to get VS to freeze is type a little text or even just paste. The freezing lasts a good 5-10 seconds. My machine has 4GB of RAM and fast disks. Could it have anything to do with asp.net mvc? Would the amount and size of other projects in the solution affect the editor?

• No colors when using autospec

  When I'm using autospec to test a non-Rails Ruby project, I always have trouble getting my tests to show up red or green. When I run a regular 'spec spec/ --color' command I get normal red/green responses. I've tried putting all sorts of commands in the .autotest file and I can't get that to work. Also, in my Rails projects, I don't get this problem. Note: I do have the ZenTest(4.2.1) and redgreen (1.2.2) gems installed.   Before making a commit, I prefer to run all hundred-something unit tests in my C# Solution, since they only take a couple minutes to run. However, if I've already run them all, all is well, and then I decide to organize the using directives in my Solution, is it really necessary to re-run the unit tests? I have a macro that goes through all files in the Solution and runs Visual Studio's 'Remove and Sort' command on each. In my understanding, so long as all projects still build after using directives are changed around, things should be fine at runtime, too. Is this correct thinking?

  I'm trying to create my own SVN server so I can work on my android projects everywhere. I have an VPS and I installed svn, I set up the directory and added a use to the password file. After a while I finally managed to create a project with svn import -m "initial import" . file:///home/admin/svn/reposvn/testp/trunk But I don't understand? Can I only import project that are on my server? If thats the case I could just use ftp and not worry about svn at all. What I would like to do is have a url to use in things like eclipse. my subdomain points to /home/admin/svn/ and then I typed in /reposvn So I tried the urls http://(mydomain)/reposvn and svn://(mydomain)/reposvn but neither worked Says Detected a cycle while processing the operation svn: Redirected cycle detected for URL .... I also set up daemon or whatever with svnserve -d any ideas? Thanks!

  The TOMCAT server is using an Oracle 9G ojdbc14 driver to its jndi connections in the /common/lib folder. My web application uses Maven + Spring and I'm getting the dataSource using Spring jndi features. I'm trying to bypass TOMCAT old ojdbc14 driver with a newer one (ojdbc14 10.2.0.4.0). I've tried putting the jars in the WEB-INF/lib folder as a project dependency, but it doesn't work the application keeps using the old oracle driver that is in the TOMCAT folder. I'm trying to bypass the TOMCAT oracle driver because I cannot update it to the newest version because there are lots of other projects using it. Does anyone have a clue?

  Hello, I have a solution with multiple projects - executable, library, and others(unimportant right now). Library contains EF entity classes and executable uses them. When I'm working on some code from the executable then every entity that I use is marked as an error and compiler says that I should check usings and references. Reference in the executable project is set to library project(not the dll itself). When I build the library project then everything gets back to normal, but when I start typing then it happens again. I could live with it, but intelli sense isn't working and that is quite a disadvantage. Any ideas?

I figured out that I could use the java HTTPServer to process the requests but I need a way to avoid using real sockets, so that the HTTPServer instantiation doesn't ask for some permission. • GWT Post build command in Eclipse

  I am starting getting used to Eclipse, but I have much more experience with Visual Studio. In Visual Studio it is possible to run auto commands after the build has finished. Now I am creating a GWT project and several other projects at once in one solution (or workspace) in Eclipse. Some files which are compiled with the GWT project needs to be copied to another location when they have been compiled. I am currently doing this manually and would like to do it automatically. I am not doing it often, since the project works fine in debug mode (...?gwt.codesvr=localhost:9997). But where is the location for executing a post build command for a GWT project in eclipse? Is it possible?
