    Does running multiple coaxial splitters on a single coaxial cable line effect quality of service for cable internet connections? Suppose there are 2-4 splitters between the cable line coming into a building before the connection to a cable modem, does this negatively effect the latency, throughput, etc of a cable internet connection by any measurable amount? Is there a maximum number of times that a coaxial cable can be split into multiple internet and TV connections before QoS suffers?

  • Mac OS X web server memory depletion issues

    I have a Mac mini ram 4GB setup as a web server which has low traffic - it is running single WordPress instance and a forum. Why is available memory dropping to ~20MB after a while, bringing the whole server down? I see httpd processes climbing more and more, and the only thing I can do is to restart the server and everything will work fine again. Anybody with the same issues to share their thought about this?

  • How can I archive a 30GB file?

Of course, 30Gb is far too large for a single dvd and the content is already zipped. I'm open to ideas, but leaning towards suggestions that will help me automatically spread the file over multiple dvds, including a simple program to stitch it back together again later.

The server is set up with a single vhost on port 80, with Proxy & Proxypass directives to the Plone zinstance: ProxyPass / http://localhost:8080/VirtualHostBase/http/server:80/Plone/VirtualHostRoot/ ProxyPassReverse / http://localhost:8080/VirtualHostBase/http/server:80/Plone/VirtualHostRoot/ However, I have some static HTML and PHP content that I want to display in an iframe via the plone site. I'm thinking I'll need to set up another vhost on a different port, then just specify the port # inline?

  • Backup Xen domU machines while running.

    The host machine is running CentOS 5.3 and using LVM to create Logical Volumes (LVs) and to allow live snapshots to be taken of those LVs. My thought was to store all of the image files for the Xen underpriviledged domains (domU) in a single LV and periodically take a snapshot of that LV and copy the disk images out of the snapshot in order to make a live backup of these systems. Is this doable? Is there a better way? Thanks!

  • Privoxy-like proxy that handles multiple parallel connections?

    Hello I use Privoxy on my XP host to filter/rewrite web pages, but it's slower because all connections go through Privoxy's single port. According to this post on StackOverflow, by default, browsers support more than one simultaneous connection, which would explain why going through Privoxy is slower. Does someone know of a similar application that could handle more than one connection? Thank you.

  • NFS issue brings down entire vSphere ESX estate

    I experienced an odd issue this morning where an NFS issue appeared to have taken down the majority of my VMs hosted on a small vSphere 5.0 estate. The infrastructure itself is 4x IBM HS21 blades running around 20 VMs. The storage is provided by a single HP X1600 array with attached D2700 chassis running Solaris 11. There's a couple of storage pools on this which are exposed over NFS for the storage of the VM files, and some iSCSI LUNs for things like MSCS shared disks. Normally, this is pretty stable, but I appreciate the lack of resiliancy in having a single X1600 doing all the storage. It turned out that pretty much all of the VMs were inaccessible, and that the ESX hosts either were describing each VM as 'powered off', 'powered on', or 'unavailable'. The VMs described as 'powered on' where not in any way reachable or responding to pings, so this may be lies. There's absolutely no indication on the X1600 that anything was awry, and nothing on the switches to indicate any loss of connectivity. I only managed to resolve the issue by rebooting the ESX hosts in turn. I have a number of questions: What the hell happened? If this was a temporary NFS failure, why did it put the ESX hosts into a state from which a reboot was the only recovery? In the future, when the NFS server goes a little off-piste, what would be the best approach to add some resilience? I've been looking at budgeting for next year and potentially have budget to purchase another X1600/D2700/disks, would an identical mirrored disk setup help to mitigate these sorts of failures automatically?     Is there a script that will show memory usage as a graph, for example as a pie-chart, with each process being being a separate slice? I'm not looking for something like Munin to graph memory usage over time, but rather show the memory usage per-process at a single point in time. To make my request even more obscure, it is for a headless server (so no X applications). The simplest way would be to write a PNG file, or possibly an HTML file (which could use Javascript to allow the filtering of processes, changing between graph-types and so on)

    I purchased PGP Whole Disk Encryption for my Macbook Pro, and it's exactly what I need. After the Symantec acquisition, PGP no longer sells single licenses of the software so I can't purchase a second copy for my iMac. Since I can no longer buy PGP Whole Disk Encryption, can anyone suggest an alternative? I'm currently using Filevault, but I specifically want whole disk encryption. I'm using a quad-core i7 iMac running Snow Leopard and I'm also hoping to protect my Windows Bootcamp partition.
