• How might you unobtrusively enhance the jQuery Datepicker class?

  You can pass special strings into jQuery's Datepicker class setDate() method like "+7" which will be translated into "7 days from today": http://docs.jquery.com/UI/Datepicker#method-setDate But you can't get that "+7" back out. When you call getDate() you get the calculated resulting date. I have a use case where I need to pull out the special string "+7" for propagation. One chunk of code is passing a special string into the Datepicker and passing the Datepicker over to another chunk of code which pulls out the date, but the latter sometimes needs to know the special string rather than the calculated date. So I need to enhance the Datepicker tool to (a) store the special code internally and (b) expose it via a method like getOriginallyPassedInDate() or some such. I'm not a jQuery/Javascript ninja so I could really use some guidance on how I might preferably-unobtrusively add the necessary functionality to the Datepicker class, the way you might monkey-patch an object in Ruby I'm guessing.

  Today, I went for an interview and the interviewer asked me how I would find the index of a given value (number) in a pre-sorted array like this: $preSortedArr=array(23,32,36,41,45,54); He also said that using recursion is not allowed. I think the function should look like this: function findIndexByValue($preSortedArray,$value){ //some codes here } What solution do you think he was expecting from me? EDIT: sorry, I forgot to add that, he originally asked me to write psuedo codes but I said I don't know. I tried to write in PHP, but I think he's expecting a language-independent solution.

• Dynamic creation of a pointer function in c++

  I was working on my advanced calculus homework today and we're doing some iteration methods along the lines of newton's method to find solutions to things like x^2=2. It got me thinking that I could write a function that would take two function pointers, one to the function itself and one to the derivative and automate the process. This wouldn't be too challenging, then I started thinking could I have the user input a function and parse that input (yes I can do that). But can I then dynamically create a pointer to a one-variable function in c++. For instance if x^2+x, can I make a function double function(double x){ return x*x+x;} during run-time. Is this remotely feasible, or is it along the lines of self-modifying code?

• What is the easiest straightforward way of telling which version performs better?

  I have an application, which I have re-factored so that I believe it is now faster. One can't possibly feel the difference, but in theory, the application should run faster. Normally I would not care, but as this is part of my project for my master's degree, I would like to support my claim that the re-factoring did not only lead to improved design and 'higher quality', but also an increase in performance of the application (a small toy-thing - a train set simulation). I have toyed with the latest VisualVM thing today for about four hours but I couldn't get anything helpful out of it. There isn't (or I haven't found it) a way to simply compare the profiling results taken from the two versions (pre- and post- refactoring). What would be the easiest, the most straightforward way of simply telling the slower from the faster version of the application. The difference of the two must have had an impact on the performance. If not, what part of the code is creating the issue? I've set return types/values for eventData class methods Is there a workaround for the Gson Unit issue? Thanks!

• A lot to merge after creating a new branch in SVN

  We have recently made a new branch, let us call it rel3.6, which was based on the last release named rel3.5. Work has started on rel3.6, and meanwhile some bugs has been fixed on rel3.5 which now is used for a service pack to be released soon. Today I wanted to merge those bugs from rel3.5 to rel3.6, so I fired up SmartSVN. Standing in the rel3.6 branch i chosed\ to merge with rel3.5 and selected to browse for a revision range. To my surprise there was a huge list of changes even though I checked "Stop on copy" and only showing mergeable revisions. Most of them where dated back before the creation of rel3.6. I did not expect to find anything from before rel3.5 was created. If I make a merge, the only thing I get are changes and conflicts to directory properties. Have I misunderstood something, or is it possible that something was done wrong when creating the branch?

• Fluent NHibernate CheckProperty and Dates

  I setup a NUnit test as such: new PersistenceSpecification<MyTable>(_session) .CheckProperty(c => c.ActionDate, DateTime.Now); When I run the test via NUnit I get the following error: SomeNamespace.MapTest: System.ApplicationException : Expected '2/23/2010 11:08:38 AM' but got '2/23/2010 11:08:38 AM' for Property 'ActionDate' The ActionDate field is a datetime field in a SQL 2008 database. I use Auto Mapping and declare the ActionDate as a DateTime property in C#. If I change the test to use DateTime.Today the tests pass. My question is why is the test failing with DateTime.Now? Is NHibernate losing some precision when saving the date to the database and if so how do prevent the lose? Thank you.

  today my problem is this i have 2 column and i wish check if the sum of that columns isn't Higher then a value(485 for example) and if is do a query...i though to do SELECT * FROM table WHERE ColumnA+ColumnB<485 But isn't working... i've already tried with SELECT Sum(ColumnA)+Sum(ColumnB) AS Total FROM table but it gives me 1 column with the sum of all rows, i instead want a row for every sum. so how can i do..? xD i hope you understood if not just ask that i try to explain it better! and thanks in advice for who want to help me! EDIT: I Found out XD the problem was that the columns was Smallint and the result of 1 or more rows was more than 32k so it wasn't working! Thanks At all!!

  I have spent several hours today reading up on doing Custom Routing in ASP.NET MVC. I can understand how to do any type of custom route if it expands from or is similar/smaller than the Default Route. However, I am trying figure out how to do a route similar to: /Language/{id}/Question/{id}/ And what I would like, too, is similar to how SO works. Something like: /Language/{id}/Arabic/Question/{ID}/Some-Question-Title Where "Arabic" and "Some-Question-Title" can be almost anything because what really matters is the ID's Am I going beyond what can be done with the extended URL past the language ID?

To use a google API effectively, it is recommended that you register for a key which should resolve this problem. My translate API does not use a key. However to use a key,the site states that we would need to enter a valid URL of ours - e.g. http://localhost etc. However this one is a windows application. How do i get a valid key?

• Django model class and custom property

  Howdy - today a weird problem occured to me: I have a modle class in Django and added a custom property to it that shall not be saved into the database and therefore is not represent in the models structure: class Category(models.Model): groups = models.ManyToManyField(Group) title = defaultdict() Now, when I'm within the shell or writing a test and I do the following: c1 = Category.objects.create() c1.title['de'] = 'german title' print c1.title['de'] # prints "german title" c2 = Category.objects.create() print c2.title['de'] # prints "german title" <-- WTF? It seems that 'title' is kind of global. If I change title to a simple string it works as expected, so it has to do something with the dict? • Jquery persistent css selector equivalent to '.live()'

  So today I just came across the 'live()' function that binds any future and past elements to the whatever event you choose, such as 'onclick'. Right now I'm having to set up buttons like the following each time I load a new button via ajax ... $('a.btn.plus').button({icons:{primary:'ui-icon-plusthick'}}); $('a.btn.pencil').button({icons:{primary:'ui-icon ui-icon-pencil'}}); $('a.btn.bigx').button({icons:{primary:'ui-icon ui-icon-closethick'}}); So, instead of calling these lines each time I use ajax to add a new button, is there a similar way to tell JQuery to setup my buttons ANYTIME I add new ones? • How can I know if a computer supports hardware-assisted virtualization before I purchase the computer?

  I'm an iPhone programmer who is no longer in possession of a personal Mac computer on which to use XCode. I have two Windows desktops, and I would like to run OS X in VMWare rather than purchase Apple's expensive hardware. However, neither of my machines supports hardware-assisted virtualization, which is required to virtualize OS X. I went shopping online for a computer today, since I've been planning to purchase a laptop anyway, but sites like Best Buy don't appear to give any indication of whether or not a product supports this. Is there any other site out there or some trick to figuring this out other than buying the machine and running Microsoft's nifty little detection tool?

And today I also came with an .bin image format. BIN signifies that the image is in the Binary format. So, what is the Internal format of .jpg image file. And How is it different from .bin (Binary) format. Because everything is Basically saved in Binary Form. And How is BITMAP Image different from .jpg format.

• Using a single PHP script for an entire site

  I had an idea today (that millions of others have probably already had) of putting all the sites script into a single file, instead of having multiple, seperate ones. When submitting a form, there would also be a hidden field called something like 'action' which would represent which function in the file would handle it. I know that things like Code Igniter and CakePHP exist which help seperate/organise the code. Is this a good or bad idea in terms of security, speed and maintenance? Do things like this already exist that i am not aware of?

• How to get rid of bogus changes in git?

  I'm a happy user of PortableGit 1.7.0.2. Today I wanted to pull a project changes from GitHub.com repository, so I did git pull. It failed with the following message: error: Your local changes to 'main.rb' would be overwritten by merge. Aborting.. I didn't care about the local changes so I typed git reset --hard HEAD (git clean from here didn't help neither), but it didn't work. When asked for git status I was still able to see the file as modified. git diff showed me that each line of the file has been modified, while git diff -b showed no differences at all, so I guess this is a line ending issue. Which is strange because the code is only pushed from Windows machines. Anyway, the question is: how can I ignore the local, bogus changes and merge with the latest changes from the remote repository?

But I realized that most of employers prefer not candidates who is able to deliver good software but those who is trained to answer questions like "what are ten differences between pointers and references in C++" or "what this messy code fragment will print". Last time I have read a book on C++ 15 years ago in secondary school and yes, that was Bjarne Stroustrup. But today I need something quick, without long philosophical explanations about polymorphism etc but with focus to silly interview tests. So, can you recommend any short and effective books to refresh my theoretical knowledge? Thank you.

  I have experience in a variety of languages (Java, Perl, C#, PHP, javascript, ansi-C for microprocessors, Objective-C and others), with Win32 programming not being an area I've done a lot of work in. Now part of my job entails maintaining a large Win32 codebase that stretches back 15 years and includes everything from C written originally for Win95 to MFC to COM to 64-bit code for Win7 to C++ using Boost and so on. If there's a variation on how to do something it's in there. Are there any good Win32 C/C++ references that discuss both the proper way to do things today and give you a little sense of how things evolved? Something like this discussion of all the various boolean types, or how to approach the API monstrosity of simply copying a string. I don't see my career heading too far down this path, but I do like to understand what I'm working with and I think this is an important part of programming history. thanks, Eric
