  I'm hosting with MediaTemple on a (dv) Dedicated-Virtual 3.5 server. My site consists of a Wordpress blog, some custom PHP pages (nothing too intense), and I server 500-700 unique visitors per day. Despite my pretty modest numbers, I suffer from regular Apache crashes on account of QoS Alerts, mostly flagged as "tcpsndbuf". MediaTemple support -- usually tops -- has been pretty useless on this matter. I'm looking for answers as to how/why this is happening, advice on how to stop it. My website is a good portion of my livelihood, and downtime equates to lost income. Any and all help much appreciated. -Matt

• How to automate an Amazon EC2 instance startup, execution of some commands and shutdown?

  I need to download 100 GB of files (it’s in about 150 files) within a 7 day period before they expire. The download is rate-limited by the host so it takes MUCH longer than the theoretical transfer rate based on normal Internet speeds. I have a script of curl http://curl.haxx.se/docs/manpage.html commands - one line per file. I had the idea of automatically spinning up n EC2 instances, executing the command and FTPing the files to a central location, then shutting down the machines. How would I do this? I don't care whether it's Linux or Windows.

• Apache hanging with MaxClients is reached

  My Apache 2.2 (preform MPM) is hanging when MaxClients is reached, rather than queueing up requests and serving them when child processes become free. When this happens, the web server is totally unresponsive until it is manually restarted. The server stack is Ubuntu 8, MySQL 5, PHP 5. Hardware is Dual Xeons (2.8) with 2GB of RAM. It serves 30,000 - 50,000 pageviews per day. Static images, CSS, and JS are offloaded to a separate server and PHP is cached using eAccelerator. The HTML output of many pages is cached to the filesystem. • Turning a log file into a sort of circular buffer

  Folks, is there a *nix solution which would make the log file act as a circular buffer? For example, I'd like log files to store maximum 1Gb of data and discard the older entries once the limit is reached. Is it possible at all? I believe in order to achieve that a log file should be turned into some sort of special device... P.S. I'm aware of misc logrotating tools but this is not what I need. Logrotating requires lots of IO, happens usually once a day while I need a "runtime" solution.

• Is there way to use Windows Easy Transfer on Windows Server 2008

  At work, I'd been experimenting with using Windows Server 2008 as a desktop machine - I'm a s/w developer so some of the server software was particularly appropriate, but back in the day there was a suggestion that Server 2008 would be faster than Vista (mainly because of less bloat). I'm now wanting to move across to a new Windows 7 workstation; not only does Server 2008 not have Windows Easy Transfer, but I can't attack the problem from the Windows 7 end either - when I try to run the migration wizard it claims that the software 'isnt compatible with this version of Windows'. I'd bet that it would work fine, if only it wasn't for the arbitrary version check... Is there any way to coax this software into working? If not, any good alternatives to Windows Easy Transfer - I don't fancy having to manually copy application settings etc across myself...

• How to interpret output from Linux 'top' command?

  Following a discussion made HERE about how PHP-FPM consuming memory, I just found a problem in reading the memory in top command. Here is a screenshot of my top just after restarting PHP-FPM. Everything is normal: about 20 PHP-FPM processes, each consuming 5.5MB memory (0.3% of total). Here is the aged server right before restart of PHP-FPM (one day after the previous restart). Here, we still have about 25 PHP-FPM with double memory usage (10MB indicating 0.5% of total). Thus, the total memory used should be 600-700 MB. Then, why 1.6GB memory has been used?

• Throughput tool with decent graphing.

  I've been looking through some of the tools available for measuring network throughput, namely iperf, bwping, ttcp, etc. I am planning on doing throughput tests over a long period of time, so what I really need is good graphing output, preferably rrd graphs. The Jperf frontend for iperf will generate a graph, and bmon has a nice command-line graph, but these simply count seconds since the test was started. I am trying to measure trends in throughput over times of the day, so a graph with times and days is necessary. So a way to get iperf to log to RRDs would be best, if this isn't possible could someone point me toward another solution?

• Best way to replicate / mirror 100s of databases in SQL 2005

  Hi, I currently host around 400-500 SQL 2005 databases of varying sizes (1-10 gig) each. I am aware of most of the different methods available and the general pros/cons of mirroring, log shipping, replication and clustering, but i am not aware of how well they tend to perform when its employed at the size i have specified (400-500 unique databases). Does anyone have any good advice on what is likely the best method for having the ability to fail over to another server with this sort of setup? Fail over does not need to be immediate, i'm just looking for something better than taking backups every day and moving them to storage. I'm preferably looking for something that would also makes it easy to manage the databases in bulk (as opposed to one at a time). Thanks for your input!

• eSATA hotswap using Jmicron JMB363 controller

  I have tried both IDE and AHCI modes in the BIOS. Also tried many different driver revisions. I can't seem to hot swap an external SATA drive. I can use the wizard to safely remove it, but reconnecting doesn't do anything unless I reboot. I use a thermaltake dock, and I would like to swap in my backup drive sometimes to do images (they take all day over USB). I can reboot, but I'd like to use hot swap. The controller is a Jmicron JMB363. I'm using the latest BIOS on my motherboard, as well.

I've installed PEAR on Debian Lenny using apt-get install php-pear, it was installed in /usr/share/php When I try to install anything using pear install <package> the PEAR folder is created under current user home directory and separate copy of pear is installed there. I ended up by installing local copy of PEAR for one of the users like this: http://kuziel.info/log/archives/2006/04/01/Installation-of-local-PEAR-repository Is any way to tell pear to install packages to system-wide repository in /usr/share/php? • LFD always stops working after ~30 days, until I give /etc/csf/csf.pl -r

• Virtual dedicated server repetitive draining RAM, OOM constantly

  My linux (fedora red hat 7) virtual dedicated server has been experiencing OOM multiple times a day for the past several days. I thought the issue was with spamd/spamassassin but after disabling this the errors remains.   The other day I picked up the new version of InternetCorkboard.com virus, the one that doesn't come with any program I've installed (as far as I can tell) and that doesn't show among Firefox add-ons. I've tried as much as I could google and even installed brand new version of Microsoft Security Essentials. I did the full scan with MSE and it didn't find anything. ATM I'm back at three-years old Firefox, but I wanna kick the bastard out. I got redirected here from Stack Overflow, but I need an answer since everything I could google is worse than useless. So anyone has any idea how to kick InternetCorkboard virus specifically?

• Creating/Editing Existing Documents

  A document was shared with me, enabling me to edit it. However, whenever I open it, it only lets me view it, and anytime I try to open the "Open with Google Docs" tab, it acts as if I never pressed it, same as if I try to download it. Same with whenever I try to create a new document. I'll click "Create" and then "Document" and it won't be registered. I really need these issues fixed pronto, as I have to use this software every day. Please help!!

  Trying to optimize my day here, making do with IIS... When executing IISRESET from the Run dialog or from cmd.exe, I get an access denied error. So executing IISRESET gets annoying - involving both mouse and keyboard: Start - Run - cmd (right-click, Run as Administrator) Agree to the UAC dialog Type iisreset, hit enter I'm looking to be able to run IISRESET as quickly as possible. Ideally I could just go Start - Run - iisreset - Enter, and the UAC prompt would pop up. I tried to enable "Run this program as an Administrator" but it was greyed out, even when I opened the properties dialog as NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM. Thinking of making a Visual Studio macro and a toolbar button; anyone got any other ideas?

• NX Client running on OS X 10.6.3 => NX Server Ubuntu 10.04: weird keymapping issue

  I have been using Ubuntu 9.10 at work after switching from vista. After being (expectedly) disappointed with performance over VNC (via VPN) when logging in from home, I came across the NOMACHINE suite. Last week, I upgraded from OS X 10.6.2 = 10.6.3 at home. After that, I also updated my NX Client at home to the latest version, as there were issues with recent changes in the OSX X11 setup that rendered the NX connection useless. At that point, everything worked fine. Fast forward, I upgraded from 9.10 = 10.04 on my work machine the next day, and after coming home and trying to log-in remotely, I noticed that the "s" and "m" keys, when pressed locally, acted as if the meta key was being pressed on the remote machine. That is, the "s" key opens in the Ubuntu login menu (the power icon), and the "m" key opens the messaging menu. I found some info on using xmodmap to remap keys, however, I can't even begin to fathom what keys I could remap to solve this issue. Any ideas?

• PHP cgi locks up and times out.

  I've got a dozen wordpress sites hosted on a nginx/php-cgi setup. After a variable amount of time (usually not that long, and occasionally very fast) PHP locks up and after 2 minutes (the timeout I set in nginx), it get a 504 timeout. I've tried everything I can think of. I've been using an init script to launch php-cgi but I compiled out php-fpm and tried that for a day with various configurations with the same results. I've tried a low number of PHP_FCGI_CHILDREN. I've tried as high as my RAM will let me. I've tried various settings for PHP_FCGI_MAX_REQUESTS. xcache seemed to exacerbate the issue, so I removed it. The server is a VPS but it has over a gig of ram dedicated to it. All suggestions are welcome at this juncture because I'm desperate.

  We were able to setup mysql master-slave replication with the following version on both master/slave: mysqld Ver 5.5.28-29.1-log for Linux on x86_64 (Percona Server (GPL), Release 29.1) One day, we noticed that replication has stopped, we tried skipping over the entries that caused the replication errors. The errors persisted so we decided to skip replication for the 4 problematic tables. The slave has now caught up with the master except for the 4 tables. What is the best way to enable replication again for the 4 tables? This is what I have in mind but I don't know if it will work: 1) Modify slave config to enable replication again for the 4 tables 2) stop slave replication 3) for each of the 4 tables, use pt-table-sync --execute --verbose --print --sync-to-master h=localhost,D=mydb,t=mytable 4) restart slave database to reload replication configuration 5) start slave replication

  To Clarify: my question is why isn't my password policy applying to people in the domain. Hey guys, having trouble with our password policy in Active Directory. Sometimes it just helps me to type out what I’m seeing It appears to not be applying properly across the board. I am new to this environment and AD in general but I think I have a general grasp of what should be going on. It’s a pretty simple AD setup without too many Group Policies being applied. • AutoCAD 11 and network file shares

  Small network of perhaps half a dozen engineers, currently working on local copies of AutoCAD project files, which are then copied back up to file server (2008 Standard, 1-2 year old Dell server hardware, RAID 5 SAS disks (10k? not positive)) at end of day. To me, this sounds horribly inefficient and error-prone, however, I've been told that "AutoCAD and network files = bad idea" and this is gospel. The network is currently 10/100 (perhaps this is the reason for the "gospel") but all the workstations are within 2 years old and have GbE NICs so an upgrade of the core switch is long overdue. However, I know certain applications don't like network access, at all, and any sign of latency or disruption brings the whole thing crashing down. Anyone care to chime in?

• Media Temple-like hosting services?

  I have a couple of wordpress sites which do not get much traffic now, but I plan on expanding to something like a 1000-2000visits/day in a year or two. Media Temple has some really nice offerings, but their Wordpress plan is 20/month...which is a little too much, seeing as at this point my site is more of a hobby than a money making machine. I currently host with HostGator (just switched from GodaddyiPageBluehost). All these cheaper/pop hosting services are okay, but it would be nice to find something a little bit more "premium", but at a lower cost than MT. Anyone know anything worth looking at?

• Network bottleneck/throttling issue

  Hi all, It's my first day at a new company and i've been given the task to find out an issue with the internet connection. I noticed that whilst I was downloading a large file, the network grinds to a halt, except for my download. At first I thought it was the internet connection/modem but it seems that whilst the lockdown occurs, I am unable to access any network device. Has anyone experienced this before and if so, do you have any pointers? Looking at the setup. They have an DSL modem that connects to a 10/100 switch. There are only 5-6 computers on the network. • Pure-FTPd linux upload problems - 500 Unknown command

  I'm running Centos with Kloxo CP and PureFTPd on VPS based on HyperVM. The problem - during the day, there are periods when FTP wors fine for hours, but sometimes it dies with "500 Unknown command" code. for files larger than 2Kb. This is really weird - with files less than 2472-2484 bytes everything would work fine, but with bigger files ftp would start writing file, would drop on 2Kb and would return "500 Unknown command" . This happens on Passive AND/OR Active connections for any filetypes. Logs are showing like the file was uploaded successfully , but the speed nearby the action would be 0.3 -0.5 Kb , when normal operation would report 70-150Kb/s speeds. I do have some Iptables firewalls on both HyperVM host,and VPS , however these are static, and most of the time it works just fine. Any suggestions on where to look for a solution would be appreciated :)
