  Let me see if someone would mind clearing up this elementary point about md5 and hashing. If you only use the first 4 bytes of an md5 hash, would that mean theoretically only 1 in 255^4 chance of collision. iow is that the intention with it (and other hash algorithms) - that you only have to use a small portion of the returned hash (say the hash is of a file of some size).

If I do combinations from the prime factors, I have to refactor remaining part of the product as I do not know the remaining part not in combination.   I'm a bioinformatician currently extracting normal-sized sequences from genomic files. Some genomic files are large enough that I don't want to put them into the main git repository, whereas I'm putting the extracted sequences into git. Is it possible to tell git "Here's a large file - don't store the whole file, just take its checksum, and let me know if that file is missing or modified." If that's not possible, I guess I'll have to either git-ignore the large files, or, as suggested in this question, store them in a submodule.

  Serious question. I tried most of the famous websites (including facebook) and I can say that tons of functionality doesn't degrade at all with js disabled. I've been always told that js should degrade gracefully, but does this still applies in these day and age? ie6 support is being dropped by several sites, and most of the web2.0 relies heavily on js (especially ajax, I even found some sites that doesn't let you login without js enabled). What are your thought about it?

  I'm wondering if there is a better way to approach this problem. The objective is to reuse code. Let’s say that I have a Linq-To-SQL datacontext and I've written a "repository style" class that wraps up a lot of the methods I need and exposes IQueryables. (so far, no problem). Now, I'm building a service layer to sit on top of this repository, many of the service methods will be 1<-1 with repository methods, but some will not. I don't see it being so complex that it really warrants building a third class to sit between the repository and the service class, but I'd like to get your thoughts. For the sake of argument, lets presume two additional things. This service is going to be exposed through WCF and that each of these public IEnumerable methods will be calling a .Select(m => m.ToViewModel()) on each returned collection which will convert it to a POCO for serialization. The service will eventually need to expose some context.SomeOtherTable which wont be wrapped into the repository.
