• Wamp website stop responding till restarting services [on hold]

  My first message here after many non conclusive research about my problem. So I'm administering a drupal website and I have migrate all application to new version: PHP 5.3.5 - 5.4.16 Apache 2.2.17 - 2.4.4 MySQL 5.1.36 - 5.6.12 With the new Wamp version. Also update Drupal from 6.19 to 6.30. I have update it by uninstalling everything in the server and reinstalling the new version. Since this update the website sometimes become unresponsive till we restart wamp. No warrning and no error in event log. Can somebody help me with this problem? I also cannot enable SSL, after configuring it wamp won't start. I have do many research and test but I still have many issue.   I regularly use Windows Explorer to browse my drives and data, and I notice little freezes and hiccups at times. It's especially noticable when browsing local or network folders with lots of video files (AVI, MKV, MPG, etc). I almost always browse in Details view, and the "Do not cache thumbnails" option is turned on. Even though I'm in "Details" mode, I'm convinced the sluggishness is due to Windows trying to generate thumbnails for the video files, so I want to disable thumbnail generation for these files. I occasionally use Thumbnails view for browsing image files, so I don't want to disable all thumbnails. But for future reference, this might be good to know. So I have three questions about disabling Windows thumbnail generation: How do I disable thumbnail generation for all non-image files? How do I disable thumbnail generation for all files? How do I disable thumbnail generation for one specific filetype? And finally, how do I undo (re-enable thumbnails) once I've performed one of the above?

• How to manage iowait over cifs?

  For backup purposes we have Cifs file Server running that contains encrypted containers for backing up the more sensitive data. The container is mounted with cryptsetup and loop as a local filesystem and the rsync is used for backups. Because the Cifs server is not the fastest machine ever built, running the rsync process results in an iowait on the servers running the backup which in turn drives Nagios into an email frenzy. The question is, how do reduce the iowait on the server? Configuring Nagios to not report seems more like a workaround then a solution. Stretching the backups over different time intervals is already done with little effect and spending money is also not an option because apparently, we are talking about a "non-critical system".

• Collaborative data modelling software?

  I'm trying to find a tool where a lot of people can work on a data model collaboratively. Embarcadero has a an ER application called ER/studio which apparently comes with a repository system that acts like typical version control software. That sounds great except ER/studio is expensive and this is a non-profit and open source organization where we encourage members to even contribute small changes. What's the best solution? Either downloadable software or a web service would work. We don't mind paying, but the cost can't go up with the number of participants...

  I have just updated my Ubuntu linux to Ubuntu 10.4, not my grub menu isnt letting me boot to Windows Partition. The problem seems to be with grubs new update from using an editable menu.lst file to using a non editable grub.cfg file. Everywhere I look it states "DO NOT EDIT THE GRUB.CGF FILE". I am at a loss as what to do. I figured that the new configuration has screwed up the Windows Boot File. Anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this. I am not sure if it is a windows issue or an issue with the Grub boot menu. Any help would be great. Thanks -Chris Flynn

• Why is my HDD not showing up?

  I'm on Windows 7, got a new 2 TiB NON-external hard disk. When I plug it in it doesn't show up on the Disk Management list in the Computer Management window (that you get by right-clicking My Computer and selecting "Manage"). At first I thought it was broken, but I could see it using a friend's computer. I've run a full disk scan using the official tool from Western Digital, no problems. I've formatted it and partitioned it at another friends place, I've even encrypted the disk fully without any problems, then mounted it and placed a text file on it with the word "hello" inside and saved the file. When I boot my own computer the disk shows up in BIOS. So the disk is not broken. I've tried changing what SATA slot on the motherboard I stick it in. Makes no difference. After all this: Why won't my Windows 7 discover the disk???

• How can I install an Apple Magic Trackpad on a PC without Boot Camp?

  I have a Apple Magic Trackpad and I'd like to use it with my PC. I have no other Apple hardware besides the Trackpad. I do not have OSX and thus no Boot Camp CD. The Trackpad uses Bluetooth and will pair with Windows 7 without specific drivers (appears as an HID-Compliant Mouse), but all it will do is point and left click (physical click, no touch tap). With Apple's Windows driver update, I should be able to achieve: Tap to click Dragging Drag lock Secondary click Two-finger scrolling Two-finger secondary tap/click But how can I obtain this driver without Boot Camp installed? Apple's Boot Camp update EXE will not install on my PC (non-Apple hardware).

  I want to make sure there aren't any odd behaviors that I don't know about when redirecting a SSL VirtualHost with mod_alias Redirect as outlined by Apache here. My code seems to work, but since SSL virtual hosts are restricted to just one IP address, I want to make sure there aren't any problems eluding me. Explicitly not using TLS. • database on SSD: data only or the DBM program too?

  I plan on moving the data I use for statistical analysis (100-ish Gb) onto an SSD. The data is either sqlite single-file db's, or postgresql-managed data. The SSD is 240 Gb, 550 MB/s read and 520 MB/s write. Should I reserve that space for the data only, or would it be a good idea to install the operating system (Mac OS X) and the application directory (Adobe Suite, Microsoft Office and the like) on the SSD too? And would it make a substantial speed difference whether I also install the postgresql binaries on the SSD? I have plenty of other space (another 300Gb hard-drive, and a 1Tb one). Don't know the features of the non-SSD drives, though they're our standard equipment on all Macs, and they're definitely OK. Thanks.

• Bash script for mysql backup - error handling

  I'm trying to backup a bunch of MyISAM tables in a way that would allow me to rsync/rdiff the backup directory to a remote location. I've came up with a script that dumps only the recently changed tables and sets the date of the file so that rsync can pick up only the changed ones, but now I don't know how to do the error handling - I would like the script to exit with a non 0 value if there are errors. • Sane(r) way to get character-encoding of CLI?

  Hi all! I was writing a CLI-Tool for Mac OS X (10.5+) that has to deal with command-line arguments which are very likely to contain non-ASCII characters. For further processing, I convert these arguments using +[NSString stringWithCString:encoding:]. My problem is, that I couldn't find good information on how to determine the character-encoding used by the shell in which said cli-tool is running in. What I came up with as a solution is the following: NSDictionary *environment = [[NSProcessInfo processInfo] environment]; NSString *ianaName = [[environment objectForKey:@"LANG"] pathExtension]; NSStringEncoding encoding = CFStringConvertEncodingToNSStringEncoding( CFStringConvertIANACharSetNameToEncoding( (CFStringRef)ianaName ) ); NSString *someArgument = [NSString stringWithCString:argv[someIndex] encoding:encoding]; I find that a little crude, however -- which makes me think that I missed out something obvious...but what?   I am pricing some new servers and I am not sure which configuration to get. The server will be running several web applications for our company. Some of them are ASP.Net sites and some are ColdFusion. The OS will be Win Server 2008 Web or Standard Edition. Do I need 2 processors or will a single quad core handle it? Xeon multi core Hyperthreading or non Hyperthreading? I am going 64bit so I can go higher than 4 Gigs of Ram. I am shopping at Dell and there are so many options, I want to get the most bang for my buck without going over budget and I also don't want the machine to be mostly under utilized.

  Hi, I have a fit-PC server with Debian GNU/Linux (Lenny). I would like to use it as a wifi access point since my Linksys WRT54GS has become unstable. I have a USB Ralink wifi NIC. When I insert the card to USB I can see this with lsusb: Bus 001 Device 002: ID 148f:2573 Ralink Technology, Corp. RT2501/RT2573 Wireless Adapter I have tried following various HOWTOs on using wifi card as AP in Linux, however, it seems that the card cannot go into monitor mode. I believe this is because I must use a newer driver or upload non-free firmware or something like that. I have tried installed wicd, but it does not help. I bought this wifi adapter because I was told that it is one of the most common used Linux supported wifi cards that can be used as access point and a lot of other stuff. So my question is: How do I set up this USB wifi card as wireless access point in Debian Lenny?

  When all of the following conditions are true, excel will open (most of the time) but will not open the document itself. No error is displayed. This only occurs with Excel files, Word and powerpoint do open perfectly. Conditions : OS is "Windows 7 Professional 64-bit" office is "Office 2007 Ultimate". excel file is in .xls (2003 format) excel file is password protected excel file is in "My Documents" (or a subfolder of it) file is double-clicked from explorer under Windows 7. Following options do open the excel file as it should : right click and selecting the (bold) open action single click the file and pressing enter moving the file to the desktop and double-click it. non password protected files do open from the same directory. Actions taken not resolving the problem: - reboot - repair office installation - system restore does not work because of Antivirus application installed (message from system restore, using "Symantec Internet Security 2010") Anyone any idea ?

  Our current hardware firewall allows for blocking incoming and outgoing ports. We have two possibilities: Block certain troublesome ports (unsecured smtp, bittorrent, etc.) Block all but a few approved ports (http, https, ssh, imap-ssl, etc.) I see several downsides with option 2. Occasionally web servers are hosted on non-standard ports and we would have to deal with the resulting issues. Also, there is nothing preventing a malicious or unwanted service from being hosted on port 80, for instance. What are are the upsides?

• Good scanner to buy as of January 2010

  I'm planning to buy a scanner soon and since I didn't purchased one in years I wanted to know which brand / models are the "best". The ability to scan negatives is a nice to have but not 100% required. If you are specifing a model in particular, plase note that it must work under 64-bit OS (I'm using Windows 7 Ulitmate 64-bit). I'm not looking for a all-in-one solution like scanner/fax/printer. I want to use this to scan "old" photos from the non-digital era :) And sometimes to scan magazines and books. I am located in Canada it would be nice if your suggestion is available here. I usually buy online at NCIX and DirectCanada if it can help you see what's available there. Edit: My search leaded me to 2 particular models. I hesitate between Canon CanoScan 8800F and Epson V600. Anyone have good/bad words on either of them?

• how to create iso dvd image for use with mac/osx "Disk Utility"?

  This seemed way easier on my pc. I would just pop a blank dvd in the drive, it asked what I wanted to do with it, to which I would respond, "burn dvd with nero" (paraphrasing), then I would pick "new" and just drag and drop the folders in there. Mac appears to have "Disk Utility" which just requires that I 'choose an image' but then doesn't bother to detail - how to do this - what the options mean e.g. format "mac OS extended (journaled)" is that ever going to be readable on a non mac machine? I want to create an ISO standard dvd as per the 'default' you'd get on nero. All the stuff on the web points to doing things with 'terminal' (the whole point of buying a mac was to get away from command line jiggery pokery - I'm trying to burn some photos not land a friggin lunar module here!) Please, if you can just provide some simple instructions on what I need to achive this I'd be extremely grateful. Ta muchley in advance.

• If I re-key a SSL certificate for a 2nd/backup server, does the original still work?

  We have a production server with a wildcard SSL certificate. I'm in the process of creating a backup/failover server that will host the same domains, and therefore will also need the SSL certificate. The certificate on the primary server was installed with the private key non-exportable, so I am unable to export the certificate for installation on the failover server. My question then is - if I re-key the certificate from Go Daddy, does the original certificate installed on the primary server cease to be valid? As an aside, the original (primary) server is IIS 6, the failover is IIS 7 (once the failover is operational, we'll likely upgrade the primary).

• Writing an internal disk from IMG, what XP software to use?

  I am trying to install the Chromium OS on an EEE PC 901, and I have succeeded in using Image Writer for Windows 0.2r23 to copy the IMG file to an SDHC card. Since the OS speed is limited by slow card access, I'd like to install the Chromium OS on the second, unused, internal SSD Drive, D:. However, Image Writer doesn't allow me to restore an internal drive from an IMG file. To be clear: I boot in XP on C: then run Image Writer to install the Chromium OS. Does anyone know how I can either convince Image Writer that D: is a removable drive or know of alternative program that will let me restore D: from an IMG file (non-windows file system)?

In windows, to right click any where - or to bring up a pop up menu we just type a key right beside on window key / pop-up key or press Shift + F10 to bring up pop up any where. • Changing linksys router configuration from command-line

  I am constantly logged into (ssh'd) my home machine (ubuntu) from various remote locations. Sometimes I would like to change my home linksys router settings (change the port forwarding settings or disable/enable wireless, things like that). When I try and use the links2 text browser, there isn't much I can do because the tab titles don't show up (presumably because they are pictures?). Is there another way of configuring a linksys router from a command line? I guess my only other option is to set up a proxy on my home machine and use a browser connected to that proxy to configure it, but I would think there might be a non-browser way of doing it. Thanks

  I have a stationary computer with Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. The primary (SSD) hard drive seems to have stopped working completely, it is not even visible in BIOS. The computer has a secondary hard drive (non-SSD, NTFS, 2TB). I have had Windows backup running and saving backups to that secondary drive. I am planning to buy a new SSD drive to replace the faulty one. I want to restore the backup to this new SSD drive. What is the most straightforward way to do this? A step-by-step description would be greatly appreciated. Further information: I have a Windows install DVD and the computer has a DVD-drive. The secondary drive is not bootable, so I cannot currently access it. The new SSD drive will probably not be identical to the original, so it might need different drivers
