  Last week I had the pleasure to speak at two GREAT conferences (as you can see from the wordcloud I’ve posted, here for Stockholm and here for Amsterdam. I used two different filtering techniques to produce the wordcloud, that’s why they look different. I’m playing a lot with R in these days…so I like to experiment different stuff). The workshop with my friend Thomas Kejser on “Data Warehouse Modeling – Making the Right Choices” and my sessions on “Automating DWH Patterns through Metadata” has been really appreciated by attendees, give the amount of good feedback I had on twitter and on some blog posts (Here and here). • Unable to mount an LVM Hard-drive after upgrade

  I imagine this is a basic gotcha ... but I can't see it. I have a system with 2(physical) harddrives. The boot system (/dev/sda) was running 10.04 & the second drive (/dev/sdb) was just a mounted filesystem. I did a clean load of Ubuntu 12.04 overwriting /dev/sda (not an upgrade) & now cannot mount the second drive. so I do not know what to enter it into the fstab ... • Ubuntu won't fit 10" netbook's native display

  I recently removed Windows 7 Starter from my netbook, and replaced it with Ubuntu 12.10. The problem is some bits of the system doesn't fit the native display resolution of 1024x600 i.e. the bottom bits of Ubuntu is hidden beneath the screen & the only 2 available resolutions are: the default 1024x768 and 800x600. I've also thought about replacing Ubuntu with Lubuntu or Puppy Linux, as the system does run a bit slow, but I can't, as then I won't be able to access the taskbar and application menu which will be hidden beneath the screen. Only Ubuntu with Unity is currently usable, as I can see the Unity Launcher. My Netbook model is HP Mini 210-1004sa, which comes with Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3150, and has a display 10.1" Active Matrix Colour TFT 1024 x 600. I was able to define a custom resolution 1024x600 using the Q&A: How set my monitor resolution? but when I set that resolution, the desktop area is lowered, with bits of it hidden beneath the screen; & there's a black space left at the top of the screen. I had to revert to the old setting 1024x768 to push the desktop upwards and remove the black space.

• Parsing mathematical experssions with two values that have parenthesis and minus signs

  I'm trying to parse equations like these which only has two values or the square root of a certain value from a text file: 100+100 -100-100 -(100)+(-100) sqrt(100) by the minues signs, parenthesis and the operator symbol in the middle and the square root, and I have no idea how to start off... I'm using a switch method to calculate the add, sub, mul and divide but I'm not sure how to properly use the sscanf function (if I am not using it properly) or if there is another way using a function like strtok to properly parse the parenthesis and the minus signs. Any kind help?

• Character Jump Control

  I would like to know how can I control the jump movement of a character in Unity3D. Basically I am trying to program the jump in such a way that while a jump is in progress the character is allowed to move either left or right in mid-air when the corresponding keys are pressed. With my script the character will correctly move to the left when, for example, the left key is pressed, but when the right key is pressed afterwards, the character moves to the right before the movement to the left is completed. • Installation causing broken packages

  Here I come I am so determined to use Ubuntu that I paid a professional to install it for me (dualboot). When I got it I got a lot of things from the software center. Skype did not have a download button so I googled it and Ubuntu help told me to do this: sudo add-apt-repository "deb http://archive.canonical.com/ $(lsb_release -sc) partner" and then this: sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install skype The terminal told me "that this is potentially harmful..." but I thought it was Ubuntu language meaning "are you sure?" Now items cannot be installed or removed until the package catalog is repaired, so I want to repair it but the package operation fails. "sudo aptitude -f install" - command not found Synaptic package manager tells me that I have two broken packages, libc6 and libc6-dev but doesn't help, only makes life complicated. What the *#$%&!!! I don't want to be forced to become a computer scientist just to be able to use a free source os. P.s. the sound stopped working

• Advice on choosing a book to read

  I would like to ask for some recommendations on useful books to read. Initially I had intended on posting quite a long description of my current issue and asking for advice. But I realised that I didn’t have a clear idea of what I wanted to ask. One thing that is clear to me is that my knowledge in various areas needs improving and reading is one method of doing that. Though choosing the right book to read seems like a task in itself when there are so many books out there. I am a programmer but I also deal with analysis, design & testing. So I am not sure what type of book to read. One option might be to work through two books at the same time. I had thought maybe one about design or practices and another of a more technical focus. Recently I came across one book that I thought might be useful to read: http://xunitpatterns.com/index.html It seems like an interesting book, but the comments I read on amazon.co.uk show that the book is probably longer than it needs to be. Has anyone read it and can comment on this? I know that trying to modify a constant is conceptually wrong, but I find this result quite weird. Can anyone explain the reason behind it?

• Skillset improvement in coming new year

  Here is a little background information. I have been working for Java 10 years. The product I am working on went to live about 3 years ago. Now, the product is getting stable. After all the post-product drama, I gained a lot of knowledge about Oracle & SQL. People(mainly management) were desperated enough to give me deep oracle-related task over DBAs. I admit I considered becoming DBA but eventually decided to remain as a programmer. DBAs & Management are demanding all the DB & Query related task back to DBA, which makes me a bit sad. In short, I anticipate a lot of time next year. What would you do to improve your skillset?? I am thinking to upgrade my Java version(Not from experience though, we are using JDK1.5) to 1.6 getting certificate. Any good idea from fellow developers?? -----------Edit --------------------- How about data modeling for application? Do you guys think it is developer role??

• Setting up a Google Analytics Campaign

  I will be doing a bunch of things to give one of my projects (main app) a big initial push for which I will be building a few small Facebook apps which will help in promoting the main apps. Traffic from these apps need to be tracked individually. My main app will be posting on the walls when the user needs to be notified. Traffic from these posts need to be tracked. Traffic from emails sent by the main app need to be tracked, like different types of email. I need to track all of these & possibly a couple of more but I need to be sure that I build my campaign URLs correctly as I won't get another chance to fix it. Correct me where I am wrong: Campaign Name: Launch Campaign Medium: Email Campaign Source: Type1 or Type2 (I can break it down for different types of email, right?) For apps: Campaign Name: Launch Campaign Medium: Apps Campaign Source: App1 or App2 (I can break it down here for different apps, right?) What if I want to track two different links within a single email or a single app? Any way of tracking them individually too but still keeping to track them as one because tracking them as one makes more sense for me. Campaign Term & Campaign content is irrelevant in my case, or I can/should use them for something? And I will also be tracking traffic of different apps. Should I do more? Let me know if my scenario wasn't clear enough & I need to explain more.

  Fault Handling It is one thing to architect, design, and code the “happy flow” of your automated business processes and services. It is another thing to deal with situations you do not want or expect to occur in your processes and services. This session dives into fault handling in Oracle Service Bus 11g and Oracle SOA Suite 11g, based on an order-to-cash business process. Faults can be divided into business faults, technical faults, programming errors, and faulty user input. Each type of fault needs a different approach to prevent them from occurring or to deal with them. For example, apply User Experience (UX) techniques to improve the quality of your application so that faulty user input can be prevented as much as possible. This session shows and demos what patterns and techniques can be used in Oracle Service Bus and Oracle SOA Suite to prevent and handle technical faults as well as business faults. Q&A This section lists answers to the questions that were raised during the preview event. Q: Where can retries be configured in Oracle Service Bus? The retry mechanism is used to prevent faults caused by temporary glitches such as short network interruptions. A faulted message is resend (retried) and might succeed this time since the glitch has passed. Retries are an out-of-the-box feature that can be used in Oracle Service Bus and Oracle SOA Suite using the Fault Policy framework. By default, retries are disabled in Oracle Service Bus. • How To Figure Out Your PC’s Host Name From the Command Prompt

  If you’re doing any work with networking, you probably need to know the name of your computer. Rather than diving into Control Panel, there’s a really simple way to do this from the command prompt. Note: If you haven’t already, be sure to read our complete guide to networking Windows 7 with XP and Vista. To see the hostname… all you have to do is type hostname at the command prompt. Go figure, eh? The same thing works in Linux or OS X, though you can see that most of the time the hostname is part of the prompt anyway. Note: you can also change the hostname by simply typing “hostname <newhostname>”. Of course, the easiest way to see your computer name in Windows is to just hit the Win+Break key combination, which will pop up the System pane from Control Panel.   If you want to change it instead, you can always change your computer name easily through Control Panel. • Tracking subdomains in the same profile as the main domain

  I have a site, let's call it http://www.example.com with a non-universal Google analytics account. Now we have to add new functionalities in a subdomain like https://subdomain.example.com as a micro site. On that subdomain the URL's will be something like https://subdomain.example.com?param1=foo&param2=bar We can't change the requirements as both main site and mini-site use a different CMS/application. This is strictly a Google Analytics question. But we need to count pageviews and events that happen in that subdomain (with URLs like https://subdomain.example.com?param1=foo&param2=bar) as belonging to the main domain. So pageviews and events in https://subdomain.example.com?param1=foo&param2=bar need to be recorded as if they happened in http://www.example.com/path/to/whatever/I/want Fortunately we have full control on JavaScript in the main domain site and in the subdomain site too. How can we make this work? Do we need to change tracking code both in the main domain and subdomains? Do we need to reconfigure Google Analytics? Please note again that we do not want to create a new view for the subdomain. Both mini-site and main site should be in the same account, property and view.

• failbit is being set and I can't figure out why

  I'm writing a MIDI file loader. Everything is going fine until at some track I get a failbit exception while trying to read from file. I can't figure out why, I've checked the file size and it's ok too. Upon checking "errno" and it returns "0". Any ideas? Thanks. • Simple C: atof giving wrong value [migrated]

  I have a program that reads input from a singe line(string obviously) and organizes it into arrays. The problem I have is that at one point the program reads two different values and returns the first one twice. • Bad previous code. To fix or not to fix?

  As a freelancer programmer I am often asked to edit part of an application source code in order to add functionalities, fix bugs etc. While I'm on my adventure journey to study the source to do what I'm asked correctly I run into code like: World::User* GetWorld() { map<DWORD,World*>::iterator it = mapWld.find( m_userWorldId ) if( it != mapWld.end() ) return &it->second; return NULL; } if( pUser->GetWorld()->GetId() == 250 ) If I investigate further I end up finding that the DWORD class member of User, userWorldId can be a value non-found in the map mapWld, which will lead to a casuality as also known as crash! The obviously valid way to do it is: World* pWorld = pUser->GetWorld(); if( pWorld && pWorld->GetId() == 250 )//... Sometimes when it's something just 'small' I end up sort of 'fixing' it. But sometimes when I'm on a 500 thousand line source code and this kind of code is everywhere there is no much can do. The question is if it's politically correct to fix some of these things. Think of it; You are not paid to fix it. Perhaps you think it's right, but it was necessarily done that way for some reason and you should not be messing with it. You do not have authorization, you do not own the source and none of the copyrights belong to you. You have authorization to edit issues accordingly to the owners but you're in a hurry, you have many other projects to do, it's the end of the month, you must pay the bills. Sincerely, I think of it as seeing an animal die from a disease in front of you, you have the cure in your hands but you do nothing. What is the best to do in this scenario?

• Storing a pass-by-reference parameter as a pointer - Bad practice?

  I recently came across the following pattern in an API I've been forced to use: class SomeObject { public: // Constructor. SomeObject(bool copy = false); // Set a value. void SetValue(const ComplexType &value); private: bool m_copy; ComplexType *m_pComplexType; ComplexType m_complexType; }; // ------------------------------------------------------------ SomeObject::SomeObject(bool copy) : m_copy(copy) { } // ------------------------------------------------------------ void SomeObject::SetValue(const ComplexType &value) { if (m_copy) m_complexType.assign(value); else m_pComplexType = const_cast<ComplexType *>(&value); } The background behind this pattern is that it is used to hold data prior to it being encoded and sent to a TCP socket. The copy weirdness is designed to make the class SomeObject efficient by only holding a pointer to the object until it needs to be encoded, but also provide the option to copy values if the lifetime of the SomeObject exceeds the lifetime of a ComplexType. However, consider the following: SomeObject SomeFunction() { ComplexType complexTypeInstance(1); // Create an instance of ComplexType. SomeObject encodeHelper; encodeHelper.SetValue(complexTypeInstance); // Okay. return encodeHelper; // Uh oh! complexTypeInstance has been destroyed, and // now encoding will venture into the realm of undefined // behaviour! } I tripped over this because I used the default constructor, and this resulted in messages being encoded as blank (through a fluke of undefined behaviour). It took an absolute age to pinpoint the cause! Anyway, is this a standard pattern for something like this? Are there any advantages to doing it this way vs overloading the SetValue method to accept a pointer that I'm missing? Thanks!
