  • Is there a version of Emacs thats runs exactly the same on OSX, Windows and Linux?

    I'm using Emacs on different environments and unsure of which version to use so that they all behave the same as I hear there are differences between XEamcs, Emacs, and some other versions. Which should I use? By the way, I am not looking to start a flame war with this post, I just want a version of emacs that runs the same everywhere which is the whole point of me wanting to switch to emacs.

  • 5.1 Surround Channels are Jumbled

    I had this exact setup working previously, but after a reformat it went screwy on me. I have an Onkyo A/V Receiver hooked up to my PC, via optical S/PDIF. Attached to the receiver is a 5.1 speaker setup (tested and working fine with my Xbox via the receiver). It seems to me that the audio channels are getting mixed up somehow between the PC and the receiver. I have a 5.1 test file which plays a sounds through each speaker individually. The channels are mixed as such: "Left Front" plays through my Right Front speaker "Center" plays through my Left Front speaker "Right Front" plays through my Center speaker "Left Rear" plays through my Subwoofer "Right Rear" plays through my Left Rear speaker I've tried downloading the latest Realtek HD Audio Drivers and the Realtek HD Audio Manager, but neither makes any difference. If there's a way I can manually rearrange the channels I believe it would fix the problem, but as far as I know this is impossible. edit: Sorry, I've forgotten some basic info. I'm running Windows 7 x64. The sound card is Realtek ALC892 embedded in a GIGABYTE GA-890GPA-UD3H AM3 motherboard.

  • Display stretches 4:3 ratios; Adds scrolling to other ratios

    I have a dual monitor setup. Normally, they both display at 1680x1050. They have been setup this way for about a year. I'm using Windows XP Professional 2003 x64 SP2. Today, out of nowhere, one of the monitors kicked back to a lower resolution. I was not playing with any configuration at the time.. in fact all I had done was close a window (maybe a browser). But the thing is that the resolution is still preserved partially by the fact that the screen will scroll when you move the mouse. So it's like looking through a 1024x768 window into a 1680x1050 world. The monitor itself does not appear to be damaged, because I also have it connected to my netbook (via KVM) and higher resolutions work fine. I tried uninstalling/reinstalling the drivers to no avail. System restore doesn't help either. I'm unsure of the exact ATI card I'm using.. Device Manager lists it as "Radeon X300/X550/X1050". There is no Catalyst Control Center software installed. I tried to install it, but there doesn't seem to be a way to install it by itself ... it forces you to install another driver, which breaks both of my displays, forcing me to go into safe mode and run system restore again. Any ideas? Thanks EDIT: After playing around more, I discovered that the "scrolling" behavior is only present for aspect ratios that are not 4:3. For 4:3 ratios, it just stretches out to fit the wide screen. My monitor's native ratio is 16:9 .. what could be causing it to think it needs to scroll?

    I work at a small office and we're overhauling our network setup there. We're a web dev company and at the moment we have 50+ production sites running on the same machine that runs our internal email, which is just plain stupid. We're moving all our client hosting off site and are now looking for something to run our internal office requirement. Below is a brain dump: Equal amount of Mac & PC, about 25 machines in total. We need a central "server" to host files that should be accessible everyone as a "network drive". If possible we'd like to use low cost hardware for this (Mac or Win based). Disk space should be upward of 1TB. Ideally we should also be able to run a small web server on this machine (LAMP stack) to run some planning and billing applications we wrote ourselves. We need some sort of MS Exchange alternative for things like a shared calendar and especially being able to set Out of Office replies. We have one printer that is connected to the network Setup should be something can preferably be managed easily via a graphical interface and NOT require command line skills. Users want to keep using Apple Mail or MS Outlook After a quick google I came across the Zimbra collaboration suite, can anyone recommend this or any other solution for our office?

    I have setup a domain name to run on amazon ec2 running ubuntu 11.04, nginx and php5-fpm. The domain name works great, I have setup it's own sites-available configuration file and sym-linked it to sites-enabled. I installed phpmyadmin via sudo apt-get install phpmyadmin and followed the instructions. All other subdomains do not respond at all so at least something is working here. FYI I have edited the /etc/phpmyadmin/config.inc.php file so that I can connect to a remote MySQL Database. What else do I need to do?

  • RD Gateway reporting features/capabilities

    We have just implemented RD Gateway for our own department in preparation for a push to the whole agency for telecommuting. It is all setup and working great, but I was trying to figure out how best to go about monitoring/reporting of users. I see third party software out there that will do it, but is there anything built-in or via powershell/scripting that I could use that would give me a report of the daily activity of users? Something to say, "User A connected at this time, was on for this long, sent/received this much data"? Basically some of the same stuff you can see in event viewer. Ideally I'd like to be able to have this setup so that once a day it emails me with the daily usage for when a supervisor asks about if their person is actually working (or at least online sending and receiving x amount of data), I'll have some metrics to give them. I realize that actual work output is relevant and more of a managerial issue, but I would like to be able to offer as much as I can from my end when asked. Thoughts? Thanks!

  • Games, Windows 8.1 and 144Hz display

    So I have been having problems with few games after switching from 7 to 8.1, which seems to be related to my 144Hz monitor. Few examples: Shank, Shank 2, Blood of the Werewolf, Astebreed, the Sims 2 and Rayman Legends patch 1.2Had few other as well but it's been long and I have 600+ steam library. From those games at least the Sims 2 and Shank worked without any problems with same setup and Windows 7. So basically these games simply refuse to launch with basic setup. However if I plug 60Hz TV with HDMI instead everything magically starts to work. As for Astebreed and the Sims 2 using windowed mode seems to also work. As for Rayman Demo and version 1.0 works for some reason and 1.2 breaks settings menu. I have already tried contacting supports. EA support stated game simply shouldn't work with 8.1 at all (which is lie as it works with that TV and friend with 8 plays just fine), ubisoft support took few weeks and support said he will forward info for further processing, blood of the werewolf support had no idea what's going on and told me to just use my TV instead.Changing monitors refresh rate to 120Hz or forcing it to 60Hz doesn't do anything. I have DVI right now but I will try with DisplayPort when I get the cable. At PCGW Garrett said it may have something to do how listing resolutions work with 8 compared to earlier Windows versions but my googling skills don't bring anything up and compatibility mode for earlier windows version doesn't work either (not that I expected that to work). My system specs are on my steam profile. How do I get those work with my 144Hz monitor as well as possible future games having same problem? Downgrading to 7 would work but is far from practical and I don't own legit lisence for that one.

    When I try to compile the tomcat connector from source, everything appears fine except that no mod_jk.so file gets created. Software versions: RHEL6 x86_64 httpd-2.4.3 tomcat-connector 1.2.37 Commands: cd native ./configure --with-apxs=/usr/local/apache2/bin/apxs make cd apache-2.0 ls The only warning message during the make is: Warning! dlname not found in /usr/local/tomcat-connectors-1.2.37-src/native/apache-2.0/mod_jk.la. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get the mod_jk.so file to be generated?

    I am writing a program that needs to be able to detect the presence of various web hosting control panels. I don't use Plesk, or have access to a server running Plesk, so I am unable to ascertain what file or directory I could test for to reliably conclude that the system is running Plesk. What file or directory indicates "Yes, this has Plesk installed" that is unlikely to ever change in the future, but would be present on all versions of Plesk out in the wild? Thanks in advance :)

    For some reason, after users do the initial authentication, the system logs in (or unlocks) and locks the screen again within a few seconds (without dropping the RDP session). I've seen this on XP SP3 and Server 2k3. Clients are both major versions of the MS client, and rdesktop. Update: We've seen the issue on a range of machines from 2k3 server (no logon/post logon scripts on servers) to XP SP3. Multiple machines have the same issue - even coming from a fresh and fully patched install.

    We're running a stacked four-node DRBD setup like this: A --> B | | v v C D This means three DRBD resources running across these four servers. Servers A and B are Xen hosts running VMs, while servers C and D are for backups. A is in the same datacentre as C. From server A to server C, in the first datacentre, using protocol B From server B to server D, in the second datacentre, using protocol B From server A to server B, different datacentres, stacked resource using protocol A First question: booting a stacked resource We haven't got any vital data running on this setup yet - we're still making sure it works first. This means simulating power cuts, network outages etc and seeing what steps we need to recover. When we pull the power out of server A, both resources go down; it attempts to bring them back up at next boot. However, it only succeeds at bringing up the lower-level resource, A-C. The stacked resource A-B doesn't even try to connect, presumably because it can't find the device until it's a connected primary on the lower level. So if anything goes wrong we need to manually log in and bring that resource up, then start the virtual machine on top of it. Second question: setting the primary of a stacked resource Our lower-level resources are configured so that the right one is considered primary: resource test-AC { on A { ... } on C { ... } startup { become-primary-on A; } } But I don't see any way to do the same with a stacked resource, as the following isn't a valid config: resource test-AB { stacked-on-top-of test-AC { ... } stacked-on-top-of test-BD { ... } startup { become-primary-on test-AC; } } This too means that recovering from a failure requires manual intervention. Is there no way to set the automatic primary for a stacked resource?

    I have several web development projects running on Fedora 13. I generally setup Apache to serve my larger projects as Virtual Hosts, but I've got several small projects cycling through that I don't really care to setup a VirtualHost for each one. Instead I'd like them all under a subdirectory of the main VirtualHost entry. I just want Apache to serve me the directory index when I browse to the host name. For example, the hostname projects.mydomain.com refers to /var/www/projects, and that directory contains only subdirectories (no index file). Unfortunately when I browse to the host directly I get: Forbidden You don't have permission to access / on this server. Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request. But my virtual host entry in my apache config looks like this: <VirtualHost *> ServerName projects.mydomain.com DocumentRoot /var/www/projects <Directory "/var/www/projects"> Options +FollowSymlinks +Indexes AllowOverride all </Directory> </VirtualHost> What am I missing here?

  • Ubuntu 12.10 64bit host reboots when trying to install any guest system using VirtualBox

    I am having a really nasty problem with VirtualBox as everytime I try to install any guest OS(using ISO file as CD for installation media), the installation starts normally but as soon as it is about to start either installing to virtual hard drive or loading(e.g. as LiveFS) it causes the host system to reboot abruptly. Config is as below: Host system: Ubuntu 12.10 64bit - Intel® Core i7-2640M CPU @ 2.80GHz × 4 Virtualbox version: 4.1.18_Ubuntu r78361 Guest OS systems tried: 32bit version of FreeBSD 9, Debian 6, Tails 0.14 VM setup Tried to have the minimal setup necessary just in case it would avoid for each system to make sure I'd avoid conflicts, but to no avail. I've tried different values and combinations of the below but the problem still persists: Shared Clipboard: Disabled Show in fullscreen/seamless: Disabled Remember runtime changes: DIsabled Base Memory: 2048 MB Chipset: PIIX3 IO APIC: Disabled EFI: Disabled Absolute Pointing device: Disabled Processor(s): 1 CPU PAE/NX: Disabled VT-x/AMD-V: Disabled Video Memory: 12 MB 3d/2d acceleration: Disabled Storage IDE COntroller: PIIX3 (same as chipset instead of PIIX4) Use host I/O cache: No Audio: disabled Network adapter: NAT USB controller: disabled No shared folder Also another sideeffect of the reboot is that it appears that it does not log any information in the error log files; not making things any easier.     Assuming that I am NOT going to add NTFS drivers that allow read+write of NTFS partitions, I was wondering if the choice of filesystem when I partition an external USB drive matters. The choices appear to be HFS+ vs. FAT32. For the time being, I simply created two half-sized paritions, one of each type. :) I plan to run various versions of Windows, and keep the VirtualBox files on the external drive.

  • Installing Ubuntu guest crashes Hyper-V host

    I have a weird problem that I don't even know where to begin diagnosing. Trying to install Ubuntu to a VM locks up the host system! My setup is: Dell R715 server, dual 16 core AMD opteron processors, 96GB RAM Dell MD3600f SAN Server 2008 R2 Datacenter System Center VMM 2012 There are 5 windows virtual machines running that have had no problems. This is the first linux VM I've tried to create. I setup a VM through virtual machine manager, set the CD drive to a Ubuntu 12.04 server x64 iso, and started it up. It boots up the normal ubuntu install menu, but the second I hit enter on "Install Ubuntu Server", I get disconnected. The HOST machine stops responding to pings. So do all virtual machines on it. It locks up entirely - keyboard on the host won't work, mouse won't move, numlock light won't change. There's no blue screen - the host is sitting at the login screen completely unresponsive. I can't find any relevant logs in event viewer after rebooting. What could cause the host machine to freeze like that? It's not a one time occurrence - it happens every time at the exact same point. Thank god this server isn't in production yet!

    I am trying to send email from my gmail account to a couple user accounts I have on my new Centos server. The email is setup correctly and I can send receive from accounts ok except info and support. I tried to setup two users "info" and "support" I have a php form that sends out email that works fine for all users except info and support. To test this and make sure that something did not change from yesterday i just created a new user "frank" and tried the submit form and it worked fine. From my gmail account i can email "frank" however i cannot email "info" or "support" The logs I pulled are as follows and i think i see the issue but no idea how to fix it.   • OpenVPN-based VPN server on same system it's "protecting": feasible?

    Scenario: hosted machine (typically a VPS) serving wiki, svn, git, forums, email lists (eg: GNU mailman), Bugzilla (etc) privately to < 20 people. People not on team not allowed access. Seeking VPN-restricted access to said server. Have good user experience with OpenVPN-based servers/clients, but have yet to server-admin such systems. Otherwise, experienced Linux sysadmin. Target system: Ubuntu, probably 12.04. Seeking to put an OpenVPN process on above server to "protect" all the above-mentioned services, enabling only OpenVPN-authorized clients/processes to access above services. (Can easily acquire additional IP address(es) as needed for this setup.) Option: if absolutely needed, can employ an additional, dedicated, "VPN server" VPS simply to be my VPN server "front end." But prefer to have all server processes (VPN server plus other server apps) all running on same machine, if possible. Will consider further if dedicated-VPN-machine setup enables 1. easier installation/administration, 2. better/easier end-user experience, and/or 3. makes system significantly more secure. Any of above feasible? The main intention: create a VPN from purely-hosted resources, and not spend all the effort to make a non-VPN, secure site--which typically means "SSL wrapping" + all the continual webserver-application-update management.
