• How to join the World of Programming? [closed]

  Name's Vlad and I am currently on my third year of Community College, studying Computer Science with emphasis on Programming in C++ and Networking. I have completed a few programming courses with general ease, but have not gained advanced understanding of programming through school. None of my friends are serious programmers working in the industry. Being an active lurker on many programming websites, and in general tech oriented sites I have noticed how little I know about the industry, the lingo and terminology. (I have no clue how Git hub works, but I generally understand what its for). So I am looking for help as to where I should look for information on the programming world and the industry in which I a very interested. By that I mean, what sites I should utilize to gain information on programming practices, introduction to advanced C++ and resources that simply introduce a 20some programming noob. I like programming, but I haven't dug my hands deep into it yet, I want to start to do so before I transfer to a University.   EDIT : Refined question to focus on the core issue Context: I have historical data about property (house) sales collected from various sources in a centralized/cloud data source (assume info collection is handled by a third party) Planning to develop an application to query and retrieve data from this centralized data source Example Queries: Simple : for given XYZ post code, what is average house price for 3 bed room house? Complex: What is estimated price for an house at "DD,Some Street,XYZ Post Code" (worked out from average values of historic data filtered by various characteristics of the house: house post code, no of bed rooms, total area, and other deeper insights like house building type, year of built, features)? In addition to average price, the application should support other property info ** maximum, or minimum price..etc and trend (graph) on a selected property attribute over a period of time**. Hence, the queries should not enforce the search based on a primary key or few fixed fields In other words, queries can be What is the change in 3 Bed Room house price (irrespective of location) over last 30 days? What kind of properties we can get for X price (irrespective of location or house type) The challenge I have is identifying the domain (BI/ Data Analytical or DB Design or DB Query Interface or DW related or something else) this problem (dynamic query on historic data) belong to, so that I can do further exploration My findings so far I could be wrong on the following, so please correct me if you think so I briefly read about BI/Data Analytics - I think it is heavy weight solution for my problem and has scalability issues. DB Design - As I understand RDBMS works well if you know Data model at design time. I am expecting attributes about property or other entity (user) that am going to bring in, would evolve quickly. hence maintenance would be an issue. As I am going to have multiple users executing query at same time, performance would be a bottleneck Other options like Graph DB (http://www.tinkerpop.com/) seems to be bit complex (they are good. but using those tools meant for generic purpose, make me think like assembly programming to solve my problem ) BigData related solution are to analyse data from multiple unrelated domains So, Any suggestion on the space this problem fit in ?   Today my dentist pulled all the stops. Really. Just to explain ... half a year ago or so, i got the base part of an dental implant in my jaw. Today i got the teeth ... beside other things. At first i made the acquaintance of a really weird instrument to remove a temporary tooth crown ... it's called "Hirtenstab" in german ... or "crown remover" in english ... i would call it tool of torture. After the fourth time using it, the temporary flew through the room and the final crowns were set on two teeth left and right of the implant. But the strangest instrument i saw was the instrument to fix the abatement (the thing between the crown and the screw thread implanted in the jaw). They really use a torque wrench (albeit a really small one) to screw the abatement into the jaw. Well .. at least i have a zirconium dioxide smile now ...

• Rythmbox in Ubuntu 12.04 and Ipod touch

  I don't know if anyone else is experiencing something similar to this. I have an Ipod touch bought 3.5 years ago. It received the last software update a year ago. After that update I had no problems syncing it in Ubuntu 11.04 and 11.10 (two different laptops). Transfer of music albums was flawless with banshee and it would even convert files to the right format automatically. Now, the same ipod touch, without any further software or firmware update does not work in Ubuntu 12.04 rythmbox. The device is mounted and recognized there, but when you drag/drop an album towards the device it does nothing. Before you guys tell me to do it, yes, I have tried with Banshee and gtkpod. The first also brings up an error message saying that the ipod does not support mp3 files, and gtkpod simply crashes all the time. The result is the same. What is going on here? Why a device that worked before does not work now in 12.04? I purchased some music in the Ubuntuone store, and would love to have it transferred to my ipod. Please no links to outdated online manuals with older versions of rythmbox or banshee (I've read them all). And again, nothing wrong with the ipod as it worked in 11.04 and 11.10 and it has not been updated since then. I would strongly appreciate any help provided. thank you

• How to convince an employer to move to VB.Net for new development?

  Some history:For the last six months I have been employed at a small firm with just three programmers, my employer among them. The firm maintains two programs written in VB6. I am asssigned as the lead programmer to one of these. In the last six months I did some maintenance and bug hunting, but created some new functionality too. I had an interview last december, which was favorable, and my contract was prolonged. I am very happy with this course of events as I only obtained a .Net certification a year ago and have no other qualifications (in the field of coding, that is). It is my strong opinion that, while migration of the existing program to .Net is advisable, it is paramount that from now on the new functionality should be written in VB.Net class libraries. After some study I found out how simple it is to integrate .Net class libraries into the VB6 development environment and how easy it is to add their functionality to existing installations by using application manifests. So, I have decided that now is the moment to roll up my sleeves and try and convince my employer that he should let me develop new code in VB.Net, using VB6 for maintenance only. We get along quite well, but I think I am going to need all the ammunition I can get to convince him. Any arguments, preferably backed up up ones, are very welcome, even arguments to dissuade me ;-)

• Upgrading a hard disk – To repave or to migrate, that is the question

  I recently changed my laptop hard disk from the stock 250GB 5400 drive to a 320GB 7200 drive.  And no, I didn’t bought a SSD drive because the cost is way too much right now.  At $70, my upgrade was a lot cheaper than a SSD drive.  Maybe next year. When changing a system main hard drive, one must ask himself: To repave or to migrate, that is the question.  I choose to migrate so I went to the Acronis Website to take a look at their product line.  They have a few products that could do the job.  One being Acronis Migrate Easy 7.0 and the other being Acronis True Image Home 2010.  Since True Image was just $10 more then Migrate Easy, I bought True Image. I inserted my new hard drive in a 2.5” USB enclosure, and started the migration process.  Once the data copied, I switched the drives.  The process went very smoothly and without hiccups.  Highly recommended. BTW, Acronis offers free trials so I guess that nothing can stop you from “testing” a migration  ;-) var addthis_pub="guybarrette";

• Where to find common database abbreviations in Spanish

  I'm doing a little pro bono work for an organization in Central America. I'm ok at Spanish and my contacts are perfectly fluent but are not techincal people. Even if they don't care what I call some fields in a database I still want to make as clean a schema as possible, and I'd like to know what some typical abbreviations are for field / variable names in Spanish. I understand abbreviations and naming conventions are entirely personal. I'm not asking for the "correct" or "best" way to abbreviate database object names. I'm just looking for references to lists of typical abbreviations that would be easily recognizable to a techincally competent native Spanish speaker. I believe I am a decent googler but I've had no luck on this one. For example, in my company (where English is the primary language) 'Date' is always shortened to 'DT', 'Code' to 'CD', 'Item' to 'IT', etc. It's easy for the crowds of IT temp workers who revolve through on various projects to figure out that 'DT' stands for 'Date', 'YR' for 'Year', or 'TN' for 'Transaction' without even having to consult the official abbreviations list.

Study completely from a book. Don't study from a book, just try writing code. A mix of the two; study from a book, then try writing code. Study half the book, then write the code by hand on paper. • How to reset the language of the package descriptions

  I have had German as my main language about a year ago. Later I changed it to English. Most parts of the system accepted the change. The notable exceptions are the package descriptions, which remain in German for some packages. You can see in the image (apt-cache and software-center), that while some descriptions are in English, some have remained in German. So the question is: how do I reset this? I guess that there is somewhere a description cache that needs to be told that it should update all descriptions? • How can I define custom keyboard mappings to resize, move, and manage windows?

  I just returned to ubuntu (13.04) after a year using OS X exclusively. I love the improvements that have come to ubuntu and unity, and I'm glad to be back. There's just one thing, though... Slate is a simple OS X tool that allows users to quickly create powerful keyboard macros and really take advantage of their screen space. I have to say I was spoiled by it. Even on a tiny laptop, my workflow was never interrupted by changing workspaces or leaving the keyboard to adjust a window, because perfect adjustment was a keystroke or two away. For example: bind h:ctrl;alt;cmd resize -10% +0 # this increases the window's left width by 10% bind h:shift;alt nudge -10% +0 # this moves the window left by 10% You make a big config file, and like vim, tmux, and everything else, it just becomes muscle memory. I can't seem to find a way to achieve anything close to this in linux or ubuntu. I've tried to make do with compiz window settings and the built-in stuff Ubuntu offers, but it's not even in the same realm. Although to be fair, this level of tuning isn't something most people care about. Thanks, guys. :) Any feedback would be appreciated.

• Do you feel bad when you have to learn new things?

  New thing is not always cool. I see many people say they are very bored by doing the similar things day after day. For me it's the opposite - I'm always learning something new. During the last one and a harf year, nearly every two months I need to do lots of researches on a totally new topic: RTMP, MP4, SIP, VNC, Smooth streaming, ..., I have to read lots of specifications, download tones of open source projects to understand concepts, and turn them into my runnable code. And it was so bad! My brain has never been very sure and very familiar with anything, and when it's close to be sure and familiar, it'll have to switch to next thing. I kind of envy people who build upper level applications because they can be very focusing, and their knowledge set includes most things their job requires. Everything is quite measurable, direct and straightforward. Have you ever had the similar feeling? I'm thinking of asking my boss to assign me some other piece of work so that I work like moving forward on a broad road instead of figuring out a way in the dark, I think it'll be more relaxing, any suggestion?

• loss of sound in ubuntu 12.04

  I'm running Linux E6520 3.2.0-56-generic #86-Ubuntu SMP Wed Oct 23 09:20:45 UTC 2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux on a Dell Latitude E6530. (This is a new machine; have run the same version of linux on an older machine for a year, without this happening.) I've been losing sound regularly, though have not been able to isolate the trigger for this. I've scoured the web on this subject, in particular https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshootingProcedure and Audio stopped working suddenly in 12.04 Nothing from the first site seemed to work for me. From the second site, I learned enough to be able to fix the problem when it happens, but nothing on the web has helped me figure out why the problem is happening in the first place. Patching together stuff from the web, and with some blind luck, I've found that the following steps seem to restore sound pulseaudio --kill pulseaudio --start pavucontrol -> output devices Click on the "Mute audio" icon, which mutes audio Click on the "Mute audio" icon, which unmutes audio. This obviously doesn't make sense: audio wasn't muted in the first place, but somehow, magically, toggling mute audio off and on seems to reset something. Can anybody suggest from this information why sound would be disappearing in the first place (it seems as though something is getting muted at the system level, but I don't know what)? a simpler (command-line/script) way of restoring sound, in particular, is it possible to reset pavucontrol from the commandline? Some other pieces of information that may be of use: The problem is clearly happening at the system level, since I've set up a clean new user, and this user has the same problems that I do. So user fixes like deleting the .pulse directory aren't (and don't) help. Sound works fine in Windows (dual-boot) so it's not a hardware problem Any help/suggestions on this would be most appreciated.

• Finding back to an old project that was turned upside-down by the developer. Your workflow?

  after some time I'm asked to work on a heavy web-project I did (layout, html/css) about a year ago. There are some changes that have to be made, basically some css and js stuff. By now the whole project was turned upside down by the developer. It gives me a hard time to connect to the work of him, especially because my old files and file-structure won't work anymore. Thats why I need a up-to-date working-environment, but I don't want to change the files on the server directly. Need some testing and improving while doing this. So, what is your workflow in such a case? Thought about copying the whole/parts of the server to a own homeserver. But even that will be a big task for me (I'm more the front-end-guy). Would be great if theres a way to shrink it down (php, mysql,...), since I only need to change some css/html javascript. Are there any tools available? Love to hear how you handle such situations. • Oracle at the biggest career fair in Germany - Absolventenkongress Cologne

  On the 28th and 29th of November the annual Absolventenkongress was held in Cologne and Oracle was there! The Absolventenkongress in Cologne is the biggest student and graduate career fair in Germany with around 13,000 people attending every year. Oracle was well presented with Senior Managers, Recruiters and Talent Consultants coming over from Spain, Ireland, Switzerland, the Netherlands and of course Germany. At our stand, candidates from all kinds of backgrounds came to talk to us about their careers and their plans for the future. Being able to talk directly to individuals who could potentially be their next manager, was a great experience for the candidates! Overall the fair has been a highly successful experience for Oracle and we hope to welcome some people we met during the fair soon as new Oracle employees! • 1360x768x32 Resolution in Windows 8 in VirtualBox

  My Lenovo ThinkPad's built-in screen maxes at 1366x768x32. I wanted to use that same resolution with Windows 8 Developer Preview inside of VirtualBox. So, what did I do? Downloaded the latest build of VirtualBox v4.1.6 (because it supports Windows 8 x64) Installed Windows 8 Developer Preview in VirtualBox as I did earlier this year. Installed Guest Additions. Ran the CustomVideoMode described in this blog post. …and quickly found out that I didn’t have the option to use 1366x768x32 inside of VirtualBox despite using the following command: VBoxManage.exe setextradata  "[Virtual Machine Name]" CustomVideoMode1 1920x1080x32   So how do you fix it? If you do a little research on this resolution, then you will find it is a non-standard resolution. Even if you run the command: VBoxManage.exe setextradata "[Virtual Machine Name]" CustomVideoMode1 1366x768x32 It will still not show that resolution inside of VirtualBox. You can fix this easily by using the following command as shown below: VBoxManage.exe setextradata "[Virtual Machine Name]" CustomVideoMode1 1360x768x32 I hope that you noticed the command used the resolution of 1360 instead of 1366. Now if you go to your display option for Windows 8 inside of Virtualbox then you can select that resolution. Anyways, I hope this helps someone with a similar problem. • How exactly does app ranking work?

  So I've been in the app industry for around half a year and I still don't know how exactly ranking higher for your app will help increase downloads. That sounds like a question with an obvious answer but this is what's going through my mind so hear me out: Unless your app is ranked within the top 100, no one can see it in the featured categories. So even if my app jumped from 400th to 300th place, would there really even be a difference in downloads? And I'm saying 400th to 300th in ranking in my specific category. Indie developers like me don't even come close to ranking for the overall category. So far, the only usefulness of trying to get a higher rank is to get featured or something like that, but big companies have tons of money to throw on marketing...so the chances of any indie developer getting featured is rare. The only thing that I can see ranking being good for is to rank for your keywords so that when someone searches for that word, your app will hopefully appear in the top 10-25 results. Can anyone confirm my thoughts or add anything else that I might have missed out on? How exactly do users find your app if you're not in the top 100 app in your category?

• Software solution from the 2000's, should I attempt to patch or remake the whole thing?

  I was sent out to discuss a system that a certain company is currently using and what should be done with it. The company manufactures various carton displays. This system was developed to keep track of clients, orders and prices. Lots have happened since the system was created and the system is now, as the manager described it, "locked up" and "problematic", which I translate as "not dynamic" and "unstable". Some info about the system It was developed around the year 2000 Fairly small system, 2-5 users, 6 forms, ~8 tables with average quantities of data Built on early Visual Basic, forms created with the drag and drop design. Interface is basically just a window with a menu and some forms Uses MSSQL database (SQL2005 server) to store data and ODBC driver to query, data was migrated from excel before this system, and before excel it was handled, calculated and written by hand and paper Users work in Microsoft XP environment (and up) Their main problem is that they can't adjust and calculate prices, can't add new carton types etc, correctly anymore because they can't (or rather, they don't know how to) touch the data on the server. I suggested 3 possible solutions Attempt to patch the current system Create a fresh new interface (preferably similar environment, VB.net or VB based) Bring it back to an Excel solution, considering it is such a small system There might be more options, but these are the ones I could think of. My questions are What should I recommend and why? What is or could be the pros and cons of these alternatives? Are there other (possibly better) alternatives?

  If you follow my updates on Twitter or on the OTN ArchBeat page on Facebook you have probably noticed that I'm a regular reader of Joe McKendrick's SOA blog on ZDNet. Usually I'm content to simply share a link on my social networks when I find one of McKendrick's posts interesting. But with a recent post, In the cloud era, let's start calling IT what it is: 'Innovation Team', McKendrick hit on a point that warrants more than a quick link: "IT is no longer just a department full of people who code, build and maintain systems. IT is the business partner that plans and strategizes what types of technology solutions the business needs to move forward." Of course, what McKendrick is describing is an increased focus on architecture. Assuming that McKendrick's assessment is correct — and I do — that expanding focus, from coding, building, and maintaining systems to planning and strategizing technology solutions that serve the business, isn't limited to the organizational level. The individual roles within the IT organization will also have to shift to a more broadly architectural mindset. McKendrick's post references Dr. Irving Wladawsky-Berger's assessment of cloud computing as a critical "third model" of computing to emerge in the 50-year history of Information Technology. • Need Directions to become a programmer [closed]

  Before youguys go on about how there are many types of programmers, please read through the post. Long term goal: Develop my own software (company) Short term goal: Get a job that involves coding/programming Current status: Support Analyst (at a software company but does not involve any programming) with 40k salary, 3rd year computer engineering student I had everything figured out. I'm going to develop a 2D scrolling game for iphone or android, publish the app, sell a bunch, and then apply at a studios as a software developer. And then something hit me. I think I need to get a job that involes programming to learn as much as I can in the shortest time possible. So I got a phone interview at a fast growing start up software company, passed that no problem, but then had to take an online technical assessment. That failed miserably. I thought that if I could just present myself, show that I am hard working, positive attitude, eager to make self improvements, type of a guy, I could get the job. I was wrong. And now, I am lost. Im thinking of staying with my job until I find a new one as a programmer. I will be working, self studying, and trying to make this happen without finishing university. I forgot to mention that the online technical assessment was based on data structures/algorithms, OO design, runtime complexity. I was hoping that I could get some guidence. Should I be focusing on app development or study computer science fundamentals? I have a list of books I can be going through: Learning C# O'Reilly (I got interested in C# because of Unity3D and Mono), C# 5.0 in a Nutshell, Head First Design Patterns, Code Complete, Introduction to Algorithms, Programming Interviews Exposed, Cracking the Coding Interview, The Google Resume.

• How do I troubleshoot system slowness seen when viewing PDFs or videos?

  Whenever I watch videos, either online of local via Totem and/or open PDF files using evince. The system gets really, really bogged down. All apps get really slow, menus take forever to display, switching windows gives me time to make a coffee, etc. I have a couple of bug reports open on this, but what do I need to do to really troubleshoot the issue? I've purged Adobe Flash from the system, but YouTube HTML5 videos still have the issue. A bunch of PDFs saved locally trigger the problem. And to (temporarily) remove the slowness, I need to shutdown the computer, breath for a few minutes, then restart. A simple reboot does not do the trick. How can I identify the cause? This only started on 13.04. I've had Ubuntu on this machine for a year without a problem until "upgrading" to 13.04. I am not a programmer, but I suspect an issue with the Intel video driver. Is there something I can run which will diagnose this, or are there concrete steps I can follow to find the culprit?
