• Exception wrapping and HTML pages

  Hi, We have a sharepoint 2007 project at work. The exception handling policy is to log to the Sharepoint logs. In this case, would the best approach be to call that method and then rethrow the exception higher up? Except if I rethrow it to be caught higher up, there is no other exception handling code so what would happen in this case? Also, if you are going to display a more friendly error to the user (which uses information in the exception object), then this would be a good use of exception wrapping. Would it be a good idea to make a custom aspx page and add these to customerrors, so that on init (not sure of the exact event), I can display exception info in the passed parameter on the page. However, a static html page can't do this so I don't see the point in wrapping exceptions (unless there is a page or alert which uses the exception object). So if a project uses html pages for errors, is there a point in wrapping exceptions? Thanks

• Adding a subview larger than cellHeight to a UITableViewCell?

  I'm trying to add a subview to a UITableViewCell and the design that I'm working from demands that this particular subview (an image) needs to be larger than the actual UITableViewCell and thus partly overlap its siblings. So I've set up my table cell, generated my image and added it to the cell's contentView: // rowHeight for the UITableView is 45.0f UIImage *image = [self createCellThumbnail: someImage]; UIImageView *thumbView = [[UIImageView alloc] initWithFrame: CGRectMake(150, -5, 55,55)]; thumbView.transform = CGAffineTransformMakeRotation(0.1f); thumbView.image = image; cell.clipsToBounds = NO; cell.contentView.clipsToBounds = NO; [cell.contentView addSubview: thumbView]; While the image will 'overflow' into the cell below it, the top of the image is always clipped, as demonstrated here: http://imgur.com/WDsAx . Does anyone know if what I'm trying to do is possible with the current approach or should I just figure out a way to draw these images onto the UITableView after all the cells are drawn (it's a non-scrollable tableview, so that would work and be fairly easy).

• How do you remove the Bing Disambiguation Dialog via API call?

  I am integrating bing maps into a web page. I am calling the GetDirections() method of my VEMap option. and setting the VERouteOptions.ShowDisambiguation property to true when I call VEMap.GetDirections(). So sometimes I get the following dialog: The problem is sometimes the user will enter a second set of directions into my form, and dialog remains. I've done the following to attempt to correct it: // In case the disambiguation dialog a.k.a "" is present from a previous direction search var disambiguationDialogElement = $('#myMap_veplacelistpanel')[0]; if (typeof (disambiguationDialogElement) == "object") { map.DeleteControl(disambiguationDialogElement); } It seems to work, but it feels like a suboptomial approach. • Automatically "upgrade" user settings from previous version of app.config file?

  Every time I compile my app and the version number changes (I have an auto-incrementing build number), I lose the user-configured app.config settings, since they're stored in the AppData folder for a specific version. Essentially, every release of my application starts from scratch as far as user settings go. While this is a mild annoyance in development, it raises the question as I approach deployment/release - if I use the app.config to store my user settings, will the user's personalized settings be hosed every time they install a patch that changes the version number of my app? If so, is there an easy way to "upgrade" the settings from the previous release? I know that using HKCU in the registry is another option, but I like the ease of the My.Settings namespace, and I'd like to stay with app.config. Another SO question asks something similar, though the answer doesn't seem that clear. Will setting my MSI so it asks the user to upgrade be enough to preserve these user-level settings?

  As the title suggests I have two models Products And Orders which are actually two table in my database and I have used a LINQ to SQL class to create there models. Now I wan to create a model named "OrderDetails" which will have properties from both the model like product name and id from product and Order number from orders something like this. An then I want to create a view from this custom model and from which I want to add "CRUD" operation. What should be my approach. And in many scenarios I may have to use data from more than 4 models. Please help. I'm wondering helplessly and I have only two days experience in ASP.NET MVC.

• Looking for suggestions about an architecture of a MultiThreaded app.

  Hello everyone. I am looking to develop a multithreaded application that will be running in unconditional loop and processing high volume of data. High volume is 2000+ records per minute. Processing will involve data retrieval, calculations and data updates. I need the application to perform so that there is virtually no back log, meaning i need to be able to finish up all of the 2000 points in one minute or even faster. Our current implementation features a multithreaded application that is spawn multiple times (from 10 to 20) and we are noticing that it's not handling data as expected and i even feel that instances of the application compete with each other for processor time and eventually if not slowing, not benefiting each other for sure. I would like to know what would be the best approach: have a single instance running but maximize threads that can run simultaneously? or is there other ways i don't know? I'm open to suggestions. • Rebasing a core repo in git.

  I have a customized fork of CodeIgniter that I use as a standard baseline for several projects. Recently, I've made significant improvements in this repo that I want to use to update the client projects that use it. What I can't seem to figure out is how to pull in the changes to a client project. So I have: Baseline: A--B--C--D--E Client cloned @ C C'--D'--E' And I want to update the client repo to E from the Baseline project. I've tried rebase, and it has erased the files not present in the baseline project (views and such), and creates a bunch of conflicts that really don't need to be conflicts with things like the default HTML5 boilerplate that I use. Is there an option for rebase that I should be using? Is there a different way to approach it? Do I need a bunch of .gitignores for the content directories?

• Best way to handle enable/disable of UIButtons on iPhone

  I have an increase button and a decrease button, both of which affect a variable. The variable has a minimum and the decrease button will be disabled once that minimum is reached. Likewise for the maximum value of the variable. In my controller, I have two IBActions for both the increase and decrease actions, and two IBOutlets, in order to disable the buttons accordingly. At the bottom of my KVO statement to handle the value change, I have: increaseButton.enabled = value != MAX; decreaseButton.enabled = value != MIN; While this code is functional, I can't help but feel that feel this is a naive approach to the problem, especially since this requires 4 connections. Is there a better solution to this, one that uses fewer connections?

  Hi, In .NET land what would be a good approach for quick prototyping of a concept (i.e. development just on my PC) that could then be extended out to product (users across LAN/WAN), BUT in a fashion that the model/business logic code and data access layer code can be used as is? One thought for example I had as to do: (a) WinForms with business logic and Entity Framework layer to SQL Server Express on my PC, then (b) Go then to ASP.net (using the business logic / data library) with SQL Server/IIS Any comments? • Maximizing the current window in javascript

  Is there a way I can maximize a currently minimized window from Javascript? Here's my situation: I have a series of links that all target the same external window (e.g. "MyNewWindow"). When I click a link, a new window pops up. If I click another link, the page pops up in the same window as expected. If I minimize the "MyNewWindow" popup, I'd like to be able to click another link and have that window maximize. My approach was to put something on the onLoad part of the body so that when the page is refreshed it will automatically "maximize" if it is minimized. Note: Using window.MoveTo() and window.resizeTo() doesnt seem to do the trick (the window stays minimized). Thanks!

  I have made a java application that allows a user to choose from certain standards and then allows him to customize those standards according to his needs. Now, the customization [via a swing application] that has been made needs to be persistent. For this we use a database [mysql/access] and hook it to the application so that with each customization made, a table [if non-existent] is created [thus making it runtime and we can not pre-determine the table names or the keys of table etc] and an appropriate entry in the table is made. I have written the driver for this connection. How do I call it in the java application and what approach should I take? I would much appreciate that if somebody can refer me some example that not only shows a sample connection being made via driver but its appropriate calls to the database as well so that i can use it as a guide.

  Hi, I'm writing a CMS in PHP that allows the user to define different fields (e.g. a Blog page could have fields for Title (string), Content (rich text), Picture (file)). I need the user to be able to add and remove fields dynamically, and the only way I can think of to do it with relational DBs is to serialise all these values and store them in one cell. This seems like a slow approach and like I'm trying to fit something dynamic within a static structure. Could someone recommend anything that is PHP-compatible that would make this easier?

• Align text with right edge of an html form

  I have an html form where the width of a textarea is specified with cols=. I want the textarea to have a specific width in terms of number of characters. However, I also want some controls to be right-justified to the right edge of the textarea. They're not in the textarea, but directly above or below it. Is it possible to do this? I was thinking a possible approach might be enclosing the textarea with some type of container that could grow to the width of the textarea, but I'm not sure how I could right-justify text within that.

• Auto height and the float issue.

  I have had this issue before and can't remember if and how I fixed it. I have to create a scenario where I have 2 DIV's floated left and right inside a parent DIV. The 2 floating DIV's have height:auto, but the parent ignores them (perfectly logical) and the background of the parent DIV can't be seen. I know what the issue is, but are there any suggestions of how to solve it? Or any alternatives, I am willing to try a new approach. Thanks in advance for any help.

• Looking for ideas on automatically arranging a set of objects (furniture) in a virtual room in AS3

  First of all, I don't want to visually arrange 3D models dragging them with the mouse, all I want is: Given a room of certain dimensions (L,W,H) and given a set of elements like beds, chairs, etc (with L,W,H dimensions, of course) I want to automatically arrange those elements to take advantage of the space as much as I can. So I want to be able to put as much furniture as I can in a given room. At the end I need to represent the arranged items visually, inside the room. My first thought was to use an array of items and sorting it with array.sortOn(["l","w","h"] Array.NUMERIC) and then define a gap between the objects and make the maths to put the objects one next to another, etc. but that isn't a good approach because some items may be placed on top of another ones (boxes of the same size, boxes on top of tables, etc). I really don't have experience on 3D programming, that's why I'm asking for help. Thanks in advance.

• JPA atomic query/save for multithreaded app

  I am in the midst of changing my JPA code around to make use of threads. I have a separate entity manager and transaction for each thread. What I used to have (for the single threaded environment) was code like: // get object from the entity manager X x = getObjectX(jpaQuery); if(x == null) { x = new X(); x.setVariable(foo); entityManager.persist(x); } With that code in the multi threaded environment I am getting duplicate keys since, I assume, getObjectX returns null for a thread, then that thread is swapped out, the next thread calls getObjextX, also getting null, and then both threads will create and persist a new X(). Short of adding in synchronization, is there an atomic way to get/save-if-doesn't-exist a value with JPA or should I rethink my approach EDIT: I am using the latest Eclipselink and MySql 5.1

Since I don't want to use Singletons for the Host of the Menu I provide another parameter (target) which will be given to the callback as the first parameter (some kind of workaround for the missing "this" reference).   We're implementing a blog for a site which supports six different languages and five of them have non-Latin characters in their alphabets. We are not sure whether we should have them encoded (that is what we're doing at the moment) Létání s potravinami: Co je dovoleno? becomes l%c3%a9t%c3%a1n%c3%ad-s-potravinami-co-je-dovoleno and the browser displays it as létání-s-potravinami-co-je-dovoleno. or if we should replace them with their Latin "counterparts" (similar looking letters) Létání s potravinami: Co je dovoleno? becomes letani-s-potravinami-co-je-dovoleno. I can't find a definitive answer as to what's better from SEO perspective? Search engine optimization is very important for us. Which approach would you suggest?

• SharePoint SLK and T-SQL xp_cmdshell safety

  I am looking into a TSQL command called "xp_cmdshell" to use to monitor a change to a the SLK (SharePoint Learning Kit) database and then execute a batch or PowerShell script that will trigger some events that I need. (It is bad practice to modify SharePoint's database directly, so I will be using its API) I have been reading on various blogs and MSDN that there are some security concerns with this approach. The sites suggest that you limit security so the command can be executed by only a specific user role. What other tips/suggestions would you recommend with using "xp_cmdshell"? Or should I go about this another way and create a script or console application that constantly checks if a change has been made? I am running Server 2008 with SQL 2008.

  I am a lifelong object-oriented programmer. My job is primarily java development, but I have experience in a number of languages. Ruby gave me my first real taste of functional programming. I loved the features Ruby borrowed from the functional paradigm such as closures and continuations. Eventually, I graduated to Scala. This has been a great way to gradually learn to approach non-trivial problems in a functional manner. Now I am interested in Clojure. I know all the sexy features that make it enticing (software transactional memory, macros, etc.), but I just can't get used to "thinking in lisp". I've seen Rich Hickey's screencasts aimed at java programmers, but they are geared towards explaining language features and not approaching real world problems. I am looking for any advice or resources which have made this transition easier for others.

• Using Remote Web Page to Initialize iPhone App

  My iPhone app relies on a vendor's XML feed to provide data. But that feed is not locked down. The vendor could change the format of the XML at any time, although so far they've promised not to. Since I might want to tell my app to use a different URL for its data source, I'd like to set up a single "Command Central" Web page, on my own server, to direct the app to the correct data source. In other words, each time my app starts, in the background and unseen by the user, it would visit "http://www.myserver.com/iphoneapp_data_sources.xml" to retrieve the URL for retrieving data from my vendor. That way, if my vendor suddenly changes the exact URL or the XML feed that the app needs, I can update that Web page and ensure that all installations of the app are using the correct XML feed. Does anyone have any advice or examples showing this kind of approach? It seems as if this must be a common problem, but so far I haven't found a well-established design pattern that fits it.

• Crowdsourcing translation for mobile developers?

  I am developing applications for mobile phones with different operating systems (Android, Symbian, iPhone). Applications are sold internationally so they need to be translated to different languages in addition to english version. I assume most mobile developers do the translations using some paid external service each time. This approach does not look very cost-effective to me. Would it make sense to have a website where simple translations would be done using crowdsourcing (other developers)? Most strings in mobile applications are very simple and short, for example "OK, "Cancel", "Are you sure?", "Please enter your password". Also the same strings are used in hundreds of applications. Instead of paying for translating all strings, developers could save money by only buying their difficult application specific translations. Does anyone agree with this idea? I have seen many opensource projects doing the translations succesfully using volunteers.

  I've posted a code sample below. Firstly let me explain termStore.Groups in the code below is a collection of Group Objects (The exact class is irrelevant). Checking for null : if (termStore.Groups[groupName] == null) seems like a logical (clean) approach, but if the Groups collection is empty then an exception is produced. using the termStore.Groups.Contains is not an option either because this expects a strong type i.e: .Contains(Group)... not .Contains(GroupName as string) Can someone recommend a clean / generic way I can check for if an item exists in collection .   Hello -- I'm a biologist switching careers, and trying to learn programming as a result. I stumbled upon the aforementioned book on Amazon, which jived with my liberal arts background. Despite my great satisfaction with the didactic approach, I was frustrated to see that the answers to the exercises are restricted to teachers only. As I am pursuing this endeavor on my own, this restriction dramatically cripples the value of this book. My request to the author's website for access to the answers has not been answered, and I would desperately like to continue with this book. Anyone have any experience dealing with the book's website, or at the very least a torrent of the answers? Otherwise, I suspect I will be relegated to using JavaScript for everything! Thanks!
