• What ever happened to APL?

  When I was at University 30 years ago, I used a programming language called APL. I believe the acronym stood for "A Programming Language", This language was interpretive and was especially useful for array and matrix operations with powerful operators and library functions to help with that. Did you use APL? Is this language still in use anywhere? Is it still available, either commercially or open source? I remember the combinatorics assignment we had. It was complex. It took a week of work for people to program it in PL/1 and those programs ranged from 500 to 1000 lines long. I wrote it in APL in under an hour. I left it at 10 lines for readability, although I should have been a purist and worked another hour to get it into 1 line. The PL/1 programs took 1 or 2 minutes to run on the IBM mainframe and solve the problem. The computer charge was $20. My APL program took 2 hours to run and the charge was $1,500 which was paid for by our Computer Science Department's budget. That's when I realized that a week of my time is worth way more than saving some $'s in someone else's budget. I got an A+ in the course. p.s. • Java - How to find count of items in a list in another list

  Say I have two lists: List<String>products = new ArrayList<String>(); products.add("computer"); products.add("phone"); products.add("mouse"); products.add("keyboard"); List<String>cart = new ArrayList<String>(); cart.add("phone"); cart.add("monitor"); I need to find how many items in the cart list exist in the products list. For the lists above, the answer would be 1 (as phone is in products and cart). If the cart list was: List<String>cart = new ArrayList<String>(); cart.add("desk"); cart.add("chair"); The result would be 0. If cart contained computer, mouse, desk, chair, the result would be 2 (for computer and mouse). Is there something in the Apache Commons Collections or the Google Collections API? I've looked through them and see ways to get a bag count, but not from another list, although it's possible I'm missing something. Right now, the only way I can think of is to iterate over the cart items and see if products contains the individual item and keep a count. I can't use containsAll as I need the count (not a boolean), and that would fail if all items in cart didn't exist in the product list (which can happen). I'm using Java 1.6 if that matters.

• Android beginner: understanding MotionEvent actions

  I am having trouble getting my activity to return a MotionEvent.ACTION_UP. Probably a beginner's error. In LogCat, I'm only seeing the ACTION_MOVE event (which is an int value of 3). I also see the X/Y coordinates. No ACTION_DOWN and no ACTION_UP. I looked everywhere for a solution.   Am trying to use OsmDroid with MapQuest maps downloaded from Mobile Atlas Creator. I followed all the instructions to generate the map tiles, upload them to the SDcard etc but when I run this on the device I get a screen with a bunch of empty boxes... • Graceful termination of NSApplication with Core Data and Grand Central Dispatch (GCD)

  I have an Cocoa Application (Mac OS X SDK 10.7) that is performing some processes via Grand Central Dispatch (GCD). These processes are manipulating some Core Data NSManagedObjects (non-document-based) in a manner that I believe is thread safe (creating a new managedObjectContext for use in this thread). The problem I have is when the user tries to quit the application while the dispatch queue is still running. The NSApplication delegate is being called before actually quitting. - (NSApplicationTerminateReply)applicationShouldTerminate:(NSApplication *)sender I get an error "Could not merge changes." Which is somewhat expected since there are still operations being performed through the different managedObjectContext. I am then presented with the NSAlert from the template that is generated with a core data application. In the Threading Programming Guide there is a section called "Be Aware of Thread Behaviors at Quit Time" which alludes to using replyToApplicationShouldTerminate: method. I'm having a little trouble implementing this. What I would like is for my application to complete processing the queued items and then terminate without presenting an error message to the user. It would also be helpful to update the view or use a sheet to let the user know that the app is performing some action and will terminate when the action is complete. Where and how would I implement this behavior?

• How to use SQLAlchemy to dump an SQL file from query expressions to bulk-insert into a DBMS?

  Please bear with me as I explain the problem, how I tried to solve it, and my question on how to improve it is at the end. I have a 100,000 line csv file from an offline batch job and I needed to insert it into the database as its proper models. Ordinarily, if this is a fairly straight-forward load, this can be trivially loaded by just munging the CSV file to fit a schema, but I had to do some external processing that requires querying and it's just much more convenient to use SQLAlchemy to generate the data I want. The data I want here is 3 models that represent 3 pre-exiting tables in the database and each subsequent model depends on the previous model. For example: Model C --> Foreign Key --> Model B --> Foreign Key --> Model A So, the models must be inserted in the order A, B, and C. I came up with a producer/consumer approach: - instantiate a multiprocessing.Process which contains a threadpool of 50 persister threads that have a threadlocal connection to a database - read a line from the file using the csv DictReader - enqueue the dictionary to the process, where each thread creates the appropriate models by querying the right values and each thread persists the models in the appropriate order This was faster than a non-threaded read/persist but it is way slower than bulk-loading a file into the database. The job finished persisting after about 45 minutes. For fun, I decided to write it in SQL statements, it took 5 minutes. Writing the SQL statements took me a couple of hours, though. So my question is, could I have used a faster method to insert rows using SQLAlchemy? As I understand it, SQLAlchemy is not designed for bulk insert operations, so this is less than ideal. This follows to my question, is there a way to generate the SQL statements using SQLAlchemy, throw them in a file, and then just use a bulk-load into the database? I know about str(model_object) but it does not show the interpolated values. I would appreciate any guidance for how to do this faster. Thanks!

  Which datastructure would you use in the place of X to have efficient merges, sorts and additions as described below? #1 Possible solution: one HashMap to X -datastructure Having a HashMap pointing from fileID to some datastructure linking word, wordCount and wordID may be a good solution. However, I have not found a way to implement it. I am not allowed to use Postgres or any similar tool to keep my data neutralized. I want to have efficient merges, sorts and additions according to fileID, wordID or wordCount for the type below. • Google Reader API with Objective-C - Problem getting token

  I am able to successfully get the SID (SessionID) for my Google Reader account. In order to obtain the feed and do other operations inside Google Reader, you have to obtain an authorization token. I'm having trouble doing this. • NSUserDefaults not saving properly

  Hey Guys I'm having issues with NSUserDefaults and I don't quite understand what's going on My App has 5 levels and each level does the exact same thing with NSUserDefaults (Retrieves the levels defaults, changes the value as the user plays the level and then sets the defaults and syncronizes at the end of the level) the first 4 levels...work without a hitch but the last level doesn't save the values. The app doesn't crash and the last level isn't the very last thing that happens, And I even have the defaults synchronized when the application terminates. I'm building an WPF application that connect to web services for its operations.Things that i needed to be working are so far fine.Now i'll like to improve use experience by adding features like username editable combobox, sign me in when skype start and start when computer start. I have a fair idea about each feature but very small knowledge about their implementation. Question 1 username combobox : i use a combobox with isEditable set to true but i think it doesnt have the previous username, would that mean that i have to store every successful login username in a sqlite for example? Question 2 sign me in when skype start : i think about using sqlite after all to store the credentials and store the value (as in true or false) if autologin has to be performed. Question 3 start when computer start : i know it's about having is as service.but the process of using it as a service and removing its service when checkbox is checked or unckecked is a bit confusing to me. Question 4 Please wait(signing in) of skype if i want to do things like please wait at login(login is over webservice) in a WPF application should i use a animated gif in a grid that i can show when hiding the login combobox and passwordbox grid or i should use an animated object(for which i have no knowledge about for now) ?   Hi there, I am using RestWebservice for few basic operations , like creating/searching. The request xml looks something like this <customer> <name/> ..... </customer> For a successful operation I return the same customer XML with extra fields populated in it(eg. systemId etc which we blank in the request) . with Response.Status=2000 For an unsuccessful operation i return something like this with different error codes . e.g Response.Status = 422(Unprocessable entity) Response.Status= 500(Internal Server Error) and few others.. <errors> <error> An exception occurred while creating the customer</error> <error> blah argument is not valid.</error> </errors> Now i am not sure , whether this is the correct way of sending the errors to the client. Maybe it should be present in the header of the response. I will really appreciate any help. Thanks!

  EDIT: Solved. I was unware that enabling a language extension in the source file did not enable the language extension in GHCi. The solution was to :set FlexibleContexts in GHCi. I recently discovered that type declarations in classes and instances in Haskell are Horn clauses. So I encoded the arithmetic operations from The Art of Prolog, Chapter 3, into Haskell. However, I don't understand how to instantiate type variables in Haskell. That is, I don't understand what the Haskell equivalent of a Prolog query ?-f(X1,X2,...,Xn) is. I assume that :t undefined :: (f x1 x2 ... xn) => xi would cause Haskell to instantiate xi, but this gives a Non type-variable argument in the constraint error, even with FlexibleContexts enabled.

• FlashBuilder 4 and Zend Framework error

  I am trying to use adobe flash builder 4 with a php service. I had it set up an older macbook running leopard, but just tried to set it up on my new laptop running snow leopard. I did all the same steps.. set the Flex Server to be PHP, set the web root and url. Then I go to Data-Connect To PHP and point it to a php file I have in my web root. It says it needs to install Zend, and claims it does so successfully, but then when I try to continue, I get an error. I don't understand.. this same setup works on my older laptop. • Switching from Sourcesafe - What to look for in a product

  We're looking to move off of sourcesafe and on to a more robust source control system for our .Net apps. We're also looking for scripted/automated deployments. I'm a .Net developer (web and winforms). However, most of our development staff is RPG for the IBM iSeries and the devs use Aldon's LMI for source control and deployment. Our manager would prefer to stick with Aldon so all of our products are in the same system. However, I don't have experience with Aldon's products on the .Net side. I've used TFS and Subversion with Tortoise a bit, but not enough to recommend one or the other, especially in comparison to Aldon's product. Does anybody have experience with Aldon's products? If so, thoughts please? Also, other than the obvious things source control systems do, are there things I should avoid or are there must haves? I'm open to any system. A bit of background, I'm the only .Net dev in our company but I let operations do the deployments. I do want the ability to support concurrent checkouts if we hire a new dev.

• What is the behavior of a WPF 4 ControlStoryboardAction trigger?

  Hi all! I have a question that's been bugging me for a while: I have a lengthy IO operation which I invoke asynchronously, and I want my UI to show a blinking text to tell the users that the data is loading. I have an IsLoading boolean property in my ViewModel, and I used a ControlStoryboardAction to kickoff the blinking animation, which is set to repeat forever. For my ControlStoryboardAction trigger, I configured a data trigger to see if IsLoading is true, and start my storyboard if true. My problem is, when my IO operation returns, and I set IsLoading back to false, the animation continues to play. I thought once the trigger condition evaluated to false, it would stop the animation? I then added a second ControlStoryboardAction to stop the animation if IsLoading evaluted to false, but this didn't have any effect. The animation continued to play after IsLoading was false. Can anyone explain to me how trigger works in ControlStoryboardAction? In normal data triggers in WPF, once the condition evaluated to false, the property would be set back to its original state. It seems triggers in WPF actions don't work the same way? Thanks in advance for your help!

• Attempted to read or write protected memory-Sql Compact and .NEt

  I'm using Sql Compact3.5 as my DB with C# .NET . I have a strange problem with my application. I'm running the code in two PC with same configuration except the Sql Compact installed. In one PC where Sql Compact3.5 is not installed I'm getting this strange error: Exception :Attempted to read or write protected memory. This is often an indication that other memory is corrupt. Inner Exception : Stack Trace : at System.Data.SqlServerCe.NativeMethods.CloseStore(IntPtr pSeStore) at System.Data.SqlServerCe.SqlCeConnection.ReleaseNativeInterfaces() at System.Data.SqlServerCe.SqlCeConnection.Dispose(Boolean disposing) at System.Data.SqlServerCe.SqlCeConnection.Finalize() Source : System.Data.SqlServerCe I don't know where i have went wrong. I checked my code and included try catch everywhere. I'm handling Unhandled exception also using this . I am getting this error from a console application which I'm starting from Windows Form. In both the application I've inserted the Unhandled Exception coding and it's getting executed and getting return to the texxt file. But still Microsoft Don't Error Report is getting generated and I get that Dialog box!!! Y still that dialog box is getting generated is the trouble!!! Is there any way to supress that Dialog box??? Y I'm getting this box when I'm handling the exception and it's executing my catch handler??? In another PC where SQL Compact is installed no error I get!!! Any idea y is that so???

  I've installed Microsoft SharePoint 2010 on my Windows 7 64bits machine. I've modified the config.xml file to accomplish this. Once it's installed I run the Configuration Wizard to create a new site and it throws me the following exception: An exception of type System.IO.FileNotFoundException was thrown. Additional exception information: Could not load file or assembly 'Microsoft.IdentityModel, Version=1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified. • Synchronizing a collection of wrapped objects with a collection of unwrapped objects

  I have two classes: Employee and EmployeeGridViewAdapter. Employee is composed of several complex types. EmployeeGridViewAdapter wraps a single Employee and exposes its members as a flattened set of system types so a DataGridView can handle displaying, editing, etc. I'm using VS's builtin support for turning a POCO into a data source, which I then attach to a BindingSource object. When I attach the DataGridView to the BindingSource it creates the expected columns and at runtime I can perform the expected CRUD operations. All is good so far. The problem is the collection of adapters and the collection of employees aren't being synchronized. So all the employees I create an runtime never get persisted. Here's a snippet of the code that generates the collection of EmployeeGridViewAdapter's: var employeeCollection = new List<EmployeeGridViewAdapter>(); foreach (var employee in this.employees) { employeeCollection.Add(new EmployeeGridViewAdapter(employee)); } this.view.Employees = employeeCollection; Pretty straight forward but I can't figure out how to synchronize changes back to the original collection. I imagine edits are already handled because both collections reference the same objects but creating new employees and deleting employees aren't happening so I can't be sure.

• Strip parity bits in C from 8 bits of data followed by 1 parity bit

  I have a buffer of bits with 8 bits of data followed by 1 parity bit. This pattern repeats itself. The buffer is currently stored as an array of octets. Example (p are parity bits): 0001 0001 p000 0100 0p00 0001 00p01 1100 ... should become 0001 0001 0000 1000 0000 0100 0111 00 ... Basically, I need to strip of every ninth bit to just obtain the data bits. How can I achieve this? This is related to another question asked here sometime back. This is on a 32 bit machine so the solution to the related question may not be applicable. The maximum possible number of bits is 45 i.e. 5 data octets This is what I have tried so far. I have created a "boolean" array and added the bits into the array based on the the bitset of the octet. I then look at every ninth index of the array and through it away. Then move the remaining array down one index. Then I've got only the data bits left. I was thinking there may be better ways of doing this.

• Java Sound API: Capturing sound output from a Target Port

  I'm writing a simple piece of software that streams audio over LAN. I have all of the network parts implemented, but what I'm stumbling on is using the Java Sound API. I have successfully captured audio from the microphone, and line-in, but I can't seem to capture from any target ports, like the speakers. My question is, is it possible to capture from the Master target port? Here is the piece of code that works on initializing the line. private boolean startCapture(){ try{ DataLine.Info info = new DataLine.Info( TargetDataLine.class, format); line = (TargetDataLine)AudioSystem.getLine(info); audioBuffer = new byte[bufferSize]; line.open(format); line.start(); return true; }catch(Exception e){ System.out.println("Exception thrown when capturing audio:\n" + e); return false; } } Running the code like this will just use the microphone as my line. • How do I avoid repetition in Java ResourceBundle strings?

  We had a lot of strings which contained the same sub-string, from sentences about checking the log or how to contact support, to branding-like strings containing the company or product name. The repetition was causing a few issues for ourselves (primarily typos or copy/paste errors) but it also causes issues in that it increases the amount of text our translator has to translate. The solution I came up with went something like this: public class ExpandingResourceBundleControl extends ResourceBundle.Control { public static final ResourceBundle.Control EXPANDING = new ExpandingResourceBundleControl(); private ExpandingResourceBundleControl() { } @Override public ResourceBundle newBundle(String baseName, Locale locale, String format, ClassLoader loader, boolean reload) throws IllegalAccessException, InstantiationException, IOException { ResourceBundle inner = super.newBundle(baseName, locale, format, loader, reload); return inner == null ? null : new ExpandingResourceBundle(inner, loader); } } ExpandingResourceBundle delegates to the real resource bundle but performs conversion of {{this.kind.of.thing}} to look up the key in the resources. Every time you want to get one of these, you have to go: ResourceBundle.getBundle("com/acme/app/Bundle", EXPANDING); And this works fine -- for a while. What eventually happens is that some new code (in our case autogenerated code which was spat out of Matisse) looks up the same resource bundle without specifying the custom control. This appears to be non-reproducible if you write a simple unit test which calls it with and then without, but it occurs when the application is run for real. Somehow the cache inside ResourceBundle ejects the good value and replaces it with the broken one. I am yet to figure out why and Sun's jar files were compiled without debug info so debugging it is a chore. My questions: Is there some way of globally setting the default ResourceBundle.Control that I might not be aware of? That would solve everything rather elegantly. Is there some other way of handling this kind of thing elegantly, perhaps without tampering with the ResourceBundle classes at all?
