• Reduce the I/O priority of Windows Backup (Windows Server 2008 R2)

  I have a PostgreSQL running on Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 box. And I have scheduled a backup everyday from the RAID 1 DB disk to a dedicated standalone disk. They are SAS 15k on Dell PERC 6i. I am using the built-in Windows Server Backup for purpose. The problem is, whenever the backup process is kicked in, the database performance is hogged. I would say almost a 10x of performance reduction. From the resource monitor, the disk queue is in the double digit range when backing up, and less than 1 during the day. The disk activity is like ~30-50MB/s during backup, so I guess the hardware is acting normally, though wbengine.exe takes up most of the portions. I think reduce the IO priority of the backup process would be an answer, but I couldn't find a way to. Tuning process CPU priority does not seems to help.

• Program complains not enough disk space even if the disk space exists

  I have an EXT3 partition mounted in ordered data mode. If a power failure occurs when a program is creating files on that partition, I see that space usage reported is normal and I don't see any partial written files. But when I try to run the same program again after the system comes back up it complains that there is not enough disk space. Even though the free space reported is far more than required. The program always succeeds in normal conditions. Also the problem seems to disappear when the partition is remounted. I was wondering what could be the right way to handle the situation other than unmounting and remounting.

• 1080p playback on external monitor

  My system (netbook) specs: 1.6 GHz dual core atom N2600 2 GB DDR3 RAM Integrated GMA3600 GPU Win 7 Professional 32 Bit Daum Pot Player V-1.5 The issue: I downloaded a 1.33 GB sized 1920 x 1080 HD documentary (file extension: mp4) and it plays without a hitch using pot player. However, when I connected an external display (an LED Full HD 24" monitor) using D-Sub, the video plays fine but the player controls become very unresponsive. For instance, it takes about 40 seconds to exit full screen while playing. I tried: Installed/updated all the latest monitor drivers Updated the VGA drivers for GMA3600 No other programs ran while the video played, with most unwanted services and background processes disabled/killed. CPU usage goes only up to 49% when the video plays Question: What may I do in order to improve the player response/video playback experience? Do I need to play with (or change) Pot Player's default video decoders, etc?

• Upgrading NAS hard drives

  I was thinking of buying a NAS for home-usage. I've never used a NAS or had HDDs set up in Raids. Before I commit myself to moving all my data to a NAS I need to find out how difficult it is to upgrade and replace the NAS' hard drives. Suppose I set up a Raid 1 NAS with two 1TB hdds. At some point in the future I will use up all the space and will have to install two new 2TB hdds. Now I'll need to migrate the data from the old disks to the new ones. Will I have to hook up one of the old disks in a computer and copy all the data back in the NAS? Or can the migration be done using only the NAS? I realize the answer to the question might depend on the NAS model. Being a simple for-home solution I was thinking of getting something along the lines of D-link's 323.

  I found that Goggle Chrome supports ssl compression and Firefox should support it soon. I'm trying to configure Apache to to disable http compression if the ssl compression is used to prevent CPU overhead with the configuration option: SetEnvIf SSL_COMPRESS_METHOD DEFLATE no-gzip While the custom log (using %{SSL_COMPRESS_METHOD}x) shows that the ssl layer compression method is DEFLATE, the above option did not work and the http response content is still being compressed by Apache. I had to use the option: BrowserMatchNoCase ".Chrome." no-gzip' I prefer if there are more general method in case other browsers supports ssl compression or some has a version of chrome that does not have ssl compression.

  Basically, I want networked games to run poorly on a network, but I want everything else to run smoothly. I would also appreciate advice on blocking games in general. As far as I can tell, there's a few ways to completely prevent an internet game from running: Blocking entirely via DNS configuration (e.g. hosts file), or router DNS configuration Blocking entirely via a separate DNS server Blocking the application, by uninstalling or some kind of access control Blocking the application by automatically killing the process every once in a while Blocking the application by corrupting files periodically However, I would like a more subtle way to block a program. Something that either: Increases latency (would this be doable through some kind of QoS like what DD-WRT offers?) Increases latency by using a special routing configuration for specific target IPs Throttle other systems resources, such as memory, IO, or CPU Screw around with keyboard configurations when a game is launched I would like this to work on MacOSX and Windows, but Linux would be great too. FYI I don't have a kid, but I was brainstorming with some friends and parents.

• How can I monitor network traffic in an all Mac home network?

  I have an all Mac network consisting of an Airport Extreme, 1 MacPro, 1 Mac Mini, 2 MackBook Pros, 2 iPads, and 2 iPhones. The Mac Pro is connected directly to the Airport Extreme via Cat5 and the rest is all running via Wireless. Lately I've been getting prompted by Google to enter Capchas frequently. The message states that I might have software running on my network I'm not aware of. My wireless router is password protected using WPA2 Personal and I frequently change my password so I don't think someone is using the network from outside (but I've no way to confirm this). I'm looking for a relatively cheap (preferably open source) solution that would enable me to monitor and profile the network usage by machine and port. Can someone recommend a solution?

  I just assembled my new PC and it screams, BUT it's only recognizing 8GB of ram in BIOS and OS rather than the installed 12GB. In the BIOS the RAM was registering at 1066 so I set it to 1600MHz. • Western Digital My Book World drops off network

  Most of my storage in my house relies on a WD My Book World Edition 500GB network drive. I threw out the vendor crapware they give you to access it (a trial version of Mionet) after it starting nagging me to upgrade, and set it up as a standard network drive using Window's Map Network Drive. However, since then, it has been dropping off the network after 30 minutes of non-usage. The only way to get it back on is to switch it off and on again at the plug socket. Does anyone know what is causing this, and hopefully how to fix it? EDIT: it's the original "blue rings" version with the latest firmware.

• Apparent leak in Mozilla Firefox

  I use Mozilla Firefox 3.6 all day, opening and closing tabs quite regularly. I am noticing over time that the firefox.exe process size keeps growing and growing over time. Initially I put this down to memory fragmentation caused by opening and closing tabs, but now I am suspecting that there is a memory leak in one of the add-ons that I have installed. The problem I am seeing is that when the process size gets to about 1.5GB in the "Mem Usage" stat in Task Manager (and it gets there quite regularly), Firefox freezes up. Does anyone have any ideas about how I could diagnose whether: Any of the add-ons are leaking memory? Something else is causing this problem?

• How to force a resolution in linux?

  I have a HP LP3065 that requires a dual link dvi cable to go up to 2560x1600 resolution. However, I do not have that cable, but I want to use 1920x1200 resolution. However, my nVidia Display Settings (also system display settings) will only go up to 1280x1024, which looks horribly pixelated on the 30". How do I force the 1920x1200 resolution? I tried adding the mode into my xorg.conf file, but it still would not take it. I know my vid card can do 1920x1200 since it works on the 24" monitor with the same dvi cable. • What is a Linux device name for RAID of sas drives?

  I have a RAID1 using Promise FastTrack TX2650 consisting of 2 SAS drives. What is a Linux device name for them? Like sda is for first sata drive. I have Windows server so I can't look it directly but need this information for smartctl usage. UPDATE. I found how to access RAID: smartctl -d scsi sdb (because I also have a SATA drive). But in this case I just get an information about just raid controller though I wantto get information about drives itself. Is it possible? Promises's control panel provides information only about their healthy status (boolean) and I want more. Mostly now I need information about temperature.

  We have a cyrus 2.4.12 on Debian, we use packages, rather than building each software ourselves. I am getting the this "log" constantly, a lot of, various users, and 8-10 times per user request: fetching user_deny.db entry for 'user123' I have searched for it, but haven't found a real solution, there were some patches for 2.3.xx, but we don't want ot build it, we prefer to use packages. Is there any solution to disable the user_deny.db at all. We don't need this feature. It wastes the CPU as disk.

• Computer has video artifacts after been exposed to rain

  My desktop now displays video artifacts after been exposed to rain. Only a very small amount of moisture went inside the case. The only place I noticed any water was on the CPU socket. I used a hair dryer and paper towels to wick any remaining moisture. When I boot the PC it loads it the OS, but there are large numbers of video artifacts. The artifacts appear symmetric if that helps. I am wondering what components I need to replace. I'd like to salvage what I can. • Win 7 BSOD stucks at dumping

  Recently Ive been getting frequent bsods, which always gets stuck at dumping without finishing it, with most of them showing no error messages. This never happened before i upgraded to new rams, but 2 passes of memtest86 turned out fine. Tried reinstalling windows, problem still there. Tried initiating a manual crash, and that did create a successful dump. The SSD win 7 is on doesn't seem to have any problems, crystaldisk says its healthy. Varied the cpu multiplier between stock and +500Mhz, crashed regardless. Left voltage control to auto. Im fairly sure its a hardware problem, just cant pinpoint which specific part(s). The specs- Windows 7 x64 (1 day old) 955 x4 BE c3 (running at stock) (3.5 years old) GA-970A-D3 (1.5 years old) Gigabyte 6950, unlocked to 6970 (still at 6950 speeds) (<3 years old) 2x4GB 1600 CL9 HyperX Blu (running at 11-11-11, default motherboard setting) (<1 month old) Plextor M5s (around 5 months)

• Graphics card failure, anything I could try...

  My gaming PC has decided to die, it's not the first time but usually a quick ATX reset brings it back to life. Today it didn't. I disconnect all unessasary devices so I've only got the case button / LED cables, GPU, CPU, RAM and power connected, the computer still didn't turn on. I've not got a speaker on my motherboard so found a spare one I have for testing and when the machine starts up I get one long beep and two short beeps from my Award BIOS, which apparently means a video card error. I change it with the GPU from another machine and all works well. Q: So I have a faulty graphics card (an nVidia 8800GT OC), is there anything I can try to resurect it?

• OSX Menu bar doesn't appear til opening an application

  When I boot my MBP, the menu bar doesn't appear. When I open Mail.app or Safari, the menu bar appears. I've searched for a bit, and nothing seems to talk about this. Is there a way to fix this? • Mysql table Crashed during Optimize, table repair taking too long

  One of my vital tables was being optimzied and MySQL crashed in the middle of it. It then said the table was corrupt. I am running repair but it is taking over an hour, I need this table up ASAP (I will even truncate it if necessary). Please help me get this solved. The table has about 54 million rows.   I have create a script to start a server(my first question). Now I want it to run on the system boot and start the defined server. What should I do to get this done? My findings tell me put this file in /etc/init.d location and it will execute when the system will boot. But I am not able to understand how the first argument on the startup will be start?   Hi All, I have just purchased windows 7 64bit. I entered the disk in the drive and it told me I couldn't upgrade as I am using XP so I have tried to boot from CD instead but it doesn't work. It seems to look at the disk for a few seconds and then ends up at a screen saying windows failed to start and then I hit enter and it loads windows XP again. Does anyone know what could cause this? • Simple, user friendly and strong file encryption in Windows

  I want a colleague of mine to send me a sensitive MS-Word document via e-mail. Since Word's encryption is questionable, I would like to encrypt the file using a passphrase. Do you know of any user-friendly encryption tool that a novice user can easily use? I wouldn't like to prompt for keys or anything like this - just provide simple interface for single file encryption. EDIT: I have solved this using Putty Secure Copy, through a Linux box I have somewhere. The user downloaded scp to the same directory where the file was, and I have send him the exact scp command by mail. Nice! • Using Lighttpd: apache proxy or direct connection?

  Hi, I'm optimizing a site by using lighttpd for the static media. I've found that a recommended solution is to use Apache Proxy to point to the lighttpd server. But, does that use up an Apache thread/process per request? In my setup, I've noticed that all my processes are used up, even though they aren't doing anything, CPU wise. To free up apache processes, I've configured lighttpd and the amount of processes needed is lowered significantly, Munin shows. However, I've set it up to connect directly to lighty, to prevent apache workers from being occupied by serving static media. My question is: when using Apache Proxy, does that also use up a process/worker per request?

• How many users are "many users"?

  I need to find a solution for a website which is struggling under load. The site gets ~500 simultaneous connections during peak time, and counts around 42k hits per day. It's a wordpress based site bridged with a vbulletin forum with a lot of contents and a fairly complex structure which makes intensive use of the database. I already implemented code level full page caching (without this the server just crashes), and configured all other caching directives as well as combining css files and the like to limit http requests as much as possible. I need to understand if there is more that can be done via software or if the load is just too much for the server to handle and it needs to be upgraded, because the server goes down occasionally during peak times. Can't access the server now, but it's a dedicated CentOS machine (I think 4GB ram, can't say what CPU) running apache/mysql. So back to the main question: how can I know when the users are just too many?
