• Is it possible to programmatically talk to MSN messenger / Live messenger?

  Hi chaps, I've been researching how to interact with the MSN messenger / Live messenger service programmatically and I can't find any real documentation on this. The documentation for the Live services only seem to implement in Javascript (they're here: http://dev.live.com/Messenger/) It would be possible to reverse engineer this API to obtain the web services that it is actually using, but I am guessing that they didn't provide the sources for a reason (which means that those web services aren't meant for direct access). However I can't find any other official APIs that allow programmatic access (more specifically no APIs that mention sockets, web services, or a proper programming language like Java or .Net). Does anyone know if an API like that exists?

• Loading embedded resource on Windows 7

  Hello, I have an app that works just fine on my WinXP machine. However, when I try running it on my Win7 machine, it fails whenever it tries to load an embedded resource. The resources are all there (I can see them using Reflector). The lines that fail are all of the form: Splash.Image = new Bitmap(typeof(ContainerForm).Assembly.GetManifestResourceStream("SplashTest.Resources.Logo.gif")); And they all fail with the same exception: Exception='System.ArgumentException: Parameter is not valid. at System.Drawing.Bitmap..ctor(Stream stream) I don't understand why this is not working on my Win7 machine but does on my usual WinXP dev machine. Any ideas?

• Would you use a UITableViewController to implement a check list on the iPhone?

  I am creating an application that will have a list of items that can be checked. I just implemented it as a Table View by subclassing UITableViewController. Now I am realizing that since individual items don't have a child view (i.e. clicking on an item "Dinner" does not need to pull up a child list of "Dinner Items") then maybe I should have just created a custom view for the list. In your experience, would it be better to use the Table View or create something custom? thanks! p.s. I am a bit new to iPhone dev, but NOT new to C

• Copying a massive databse for local ruby on rails development?

  Hi guys, There is a massive database (GB) that I am working with now and all of the previous development has been done on a slicehost slice. I am trying to get ready for more developers to come in and work so I need each person to be able to setup his own machine for development, which means potentially copying this database. Selecting only the first X rows in each table to cut size could be problematic for data consistency. Is there any way around this, or is a 1 hour download for each developer going to be necessary? And beyond that, what if I need to copy the production DB down for dev purposes in the future? Sincerely, Tyler

  Hello, I have a set of Books objects, classs Book is defined as following : Class Book{ String title; ArrayList<tags> taglist; } Where title is the title of the book, example : Javascript for dummies. and taglist is a list of tags for our example : Javascript, jquery, "web dev", .. As I said a have a set of books talking about different things : IT, BIOLOGY, HISTORY, ... Each book has a title and a set of tags describing it.. I have to classify automaticaly those books into separated sets by topic, example : IT BOOKS : Java for dummies Javascript for dummies Learn flash in 30 days C++ programming HISTORY BOOKS : World wars America in 1960 Martin luther king's life BIOLOGY BOOKS : .... • Xcode missing Command Line Utility section - can't start Foundation project template

  I downloaded the iPhone SDK from the iPhone dev center a couple of days ago and installed it yesterday. I'm following the Stanford iPhone development tutorials available on iTunes U. On Assignment 1B, the first instruction is to open a new Foundation Project template. The screenshot shows several sections in Xcode which my version doesn't seem to have, including the Command Line Utility section which the Foundation Project template is shown to be in. Does this need to be installed manually? I tried searching on Google with no luck. The fact that I'm an OS X newbie doesn't really help any either. Thanks in advance!

  Hi Guys, I'm looking at buying a MacBook Pro to replace my tiring laptop. My day to day job is as a .NET web developer so I am looking to use VMware Fusion to run VS and SQL server etc. As I've not run my dev environment in a VM before, I would like to know how others are setup. What apps to you have installed? In which environment? Where do you store your files? Within each environment, or some shared drive? Are there any gotchas? Or essentials I should know. • How to create a test environnement on the production FTP

  Hello, I'm currently working on a symfony webapp, which is already on production. To develop and add/delete/modify functionnality of the model, I work on my laptop, using symfony 'dev' environnemment. I test if everything work fine, then I pray a little and deploy it on the prod server (with all the risk of data error, like when I add new not null attributes on the model, prod server configuration special stuff, version of php/apache etc.). The problem is that I would like to setup a "staging" server, which would be a copy of the production server (same database, same configuration apache/php), so that, if the deployment goes bad, the production user stay untouched and working, only the staging server is down. But my client has only 1 FTP available. So, the question is : can I run 2 symfony project, with different models, on the same FTP ? Or is there another way to do what I want to do ? Thank you !

I am building a frontend for nagios and for our host management and nagios configuration btw. Maybe it might become useful for other environments (networkmanagement) Now i need to know how to get list of all nodes of type x? I want to avoid direct SQL. A suggestion i got was to make an rss and parse it but i acess the drupal db a dozen times to extract various nodes, so it feels strange to do a web request for one thing So what i am looking for as newbie drupal dev is just a pointer to basic search module api for this task TIA florian

• In Django, why is user.is_authenticated a method and not a member variable like is_staff

  Hello all, I've lost some time with a bug in my app due to user authentication. I think that it's a bit confusing but maybe someone can explain the reason and it will appear to me very logical. The user.is_staff is a member variable while user.is_authenticated is a method. However is_authenticated only returns True or False depending if the class is User or AnonymousUser (see http://docs.djangoproject.com/en/dev/topics/auth/) Is there a reason for that? • REST API for driving distance?

  Is there a service that will give me the driving distance between two addresses? Apparently Google Maps API requires you to display a map, which I don't want to do (on that particular page), and I'd like to just snag the data and save it to my DB after a user submits a form, rather than waiting for JS to do it's thing. If it's relevant, this is going into a Django app. I discovered that CloudMade offers a Python API, which is nice, except their latest dev release has a bug in it (can't use the API object), but more importantly, it's support for Canada is awful/worthless (couldn't find directions from any major city around here!).

• PHP date function not accepting timezone change

  Hello, I've set up a quick little test to understand and debug timezones between mySQL and PHP. Here's the page: http://dev.feedingo.com/test_dates.php The dates are being created in mySQL using NOW() in a datetime field. The initial problem I was trying to figure out is what timezone mySQL is using and how to sync it up with PHP. But now there's an even weirder issue. In my test app, if you change your timezone, the first strtotime updates properly, but if you pass it into a date() function it doesn't change. This is how im setting the timezone based off the select box. $current_timezone = 'America/New_York'; if( isset( $_GET['timezone'] ) ) $current_timezone = $_GET['timezone']; date_default_timezone_set($current_timezone); Any ideas as to why the date() function isn't accepting the timezone changes? • Is a .Net membership database portable, or are accounts somehow bound to the originating Web site or

  I have an ASP.Net Web site using .Net Membership with a SQL Server provider, so the users and roles are stored in the SQL tables created by Aspnet_regsql.exe. Is this architecture totally self-contained and portable, or are users in it somehow bound to the specific Web site on which they create their account? Put another way, if we create a bunch of users in dev or UAT, the back up and restore this database to another server, accessed under another domain name, should it still work just fine? We're seeing some odd behavior when we move the database, like users losing group affiliation and such, and I'm curious how portable and environment-agnostic this database really is. I have a sneaking suspicion that something is bound to the machine key or the domain.

• .net app won't run. When compiling on dest machine (same sources) it does work. Why?

  I have a service which needs to be deployed on a clients machine. The destination machine is 64bit. My dev machine is also 64 bit. The app is really simple, listens on a port and does some db things. It targets .net 3.5 When I deploy the Anycpu, the X64 or the X86 version, the thing won't install on the clients machine. I checked dependencywalker and it lists: devmgr.dll ieshims.dll wer.dll anyhow...I install visual studio 2008 on the clients machine... check out all the sources. I don't change a thing and compile. Copy the exe over to it's dest locations...and what do you know..it works. Dependencywalker still lists the same dependency problems. How can it be that the act of compiling it on this machine gives me a different exe?

• Mysql SET NAMES UTF8 - how to get rid of?

  In a very busy PHP script we have a call at the beginning to "Set names utf8" which is setting the character set in which mysql should interpret and send the data back from the server to the client. http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/charset-applications.html I want to get rid of it so I set default-character-set=utf8 In our server ini file. (see link above) The setting seems to be working since the relevant server parameters are : 'character_set_client', 'utf8' 'character_set_connection', 'utf8' 'character_set_database', 'latin1' 'character_set_filesystem', 'binary' 'character_set_results', 'utf8' 'character_set_server', 'latin1' 'character_set_system', 'utf8' But after this change and commenting out set names utf8 call still the data starts to come out garbled. Please advise....

• Programmatically sync the db in Django

  I'm trying to sync my db from a view, something like this: from django import http from django.core import management def syncdb(request): management.call_command('syncdb') return http.HttpResponse('Database synced.') The issue is, it will block the dev server by asking for user input from the terminal. How can I pass it the '--noinput' option to prevent asking me anything? I have other ways of marking users as super-user, so there's no need for the user input, but I really need to call syncdb (and flush) programmatically, without logging on to the server via ssh. Any help is appreciated.

  I have a requirement to write a web service that allows me to post an image to a server along with some additional information about that image. I'm completely new to developing web services (normally client side dev) so I'm a little stumped as to what I need to look into and try. How do you post binary data and plain text into a servic? What RequestFormat should I use? It looks like my options are xml or json. Can I use either of these? Bit of a waffly question but I just need some direction rather than a solution as I can't seem to find much online.

• How to upload binary (audio) data from a Flash AS3 client to .NET server (WCF/REST/HTTP/?)?

  Simply stated: I'm trying to record audio in a browser, and get that data back up to the server. I originally tried to capture, encode and upload the audio using Silverlight, but because of the lack of suitable client-side encoding options, I'm now giving Flash a shot (Flash has baked-in support for encoding to Speex). I think I've figured out how to capture and encode the audio... But now what was easy in Silverlight, is the challenge in Flash. My server-side is .NET: MVC2- I'm open to receiving the audio in whatever manner is best- REST, WCF.. So that's my question: How could one upload binary data from Flash, to a .NET server-side endpoint. If the answer is WCF: then how would one setup the client-side proxies to communicate with the service? If the answer is REST or HTTP Post, then how would one construct this HTTP request and pass along the data? I've been reading up on AS3, but am new to Flash dev... Thanks for any help!

• What keying option does the keychain use?

  I have read into the keychain and have found that it uses Triple DES. What I can't find is what keying option it uses. I am guessing / hoping that its keying option 1 where all 3 passwords are unique but if thats the case I can only think of two passwords it can use (user password and App ID that comes from your dev cert) so where is the third coming from? Is it a key private to Apple? If its keying option 2 (first and third key are the same) it might not be secure enough for our company to rely on. Although that might sound paranoid I have to justify to our security department that it is secure enough.

• Linq to Entities performance within ASP.NET Development Server

  I've been evaluating linq to entities and linq to SQL for a project. Obviously each has its own advantages and disadvantages which have been discussed plenty of times here. However, One thing I am seeing with L2E is kind of odd. Using L2S, when using the ASP.NET Development Server, the performance is a little slower for my web service calls. I'm looking at 300ms vs. 250 ms. However, when using L2E, when using ASP.NET Dev Server, the performance is awful. I'm talking 1,250 ms vs. 220 ms. I know I should probably just use local IIS for development, but I'm curious if anyone else has seen this, or knows what is causing it.

• jQuery.keypad Performance Issues

  I am working on a Kiosk Touch Screen application and using the JQuery.keypad plugin and noticing some major performance issues. If you click a number of buttons in rapid succession the CPU gets pegged, the button clicks don't keep up with the clicking and some button presses even get lost. On my dev machine this isn't as noticeable, but on the Kiosk itself with 1 gig of ram it's painful. Trying the demo keypad at http://keith-wood.name/keypad.html#inline the one with multiple targets (which is the case with mine) has the exact same issues. Does anyone have any suggestions on how we might be able to improve this? The Kiosk runs in Firefox only so something specific to that would work. I'm using v1.2.1 of jquery.keypad and just upgraded to v1.4.2 of jquery.

• summer experiment: GWT & python for a trading game- arch question

  Hi, As a summer learning experiment, I'm thinking of coding up a web front end for a trading game i wrote in python, that generates share prices and random snippets of text. I am sort of struggling with how this should work on the back-end though. I'd rather have my GWT client page interact with the python share price generator, than to try and re-code it in java. I suppose i could use an sqlite db, and then use jdbc to pick up the prices, but i was wondering if there is a better way, for me to be able to poll some python script either from my client page, or from the serverside java code ? How can I unserialize those objects and remove object I need? I suspect, that I don't have to write my custom parser, that Zend_Session already has a method to do this. I have tried different combinations of unserialize but it still returns false. I'm using autoloader from ZF 1.10.2 and Doctrine 1.2
