• Why does the heat production increase as the clockrate of a CPU increases?

  This is probably a bit off-topic, but the whole multi-core debate got me thinking. It's much easier to produce two cores (in one package) then speeding up one core by a factor of two. Why exactly is this? I googled a bit, but found mostly very imprecise answers from over clocking boards which do not explain the underlying Physics. The voltage seems to have the most impact (quadratic), but do I need to run a CPU at higher voltage if I want a faster clock rate? Also I like to know why exactly (and how much) heat a semiconductor circuit produces when it runs at a certain clock speed.

• Vista Startup - Cannot Find the File Specified

  Yesterday I restarted my laptop because my Wi-Fi catcher wasn't working correctly, and when the computer reached the login screen, instead of showing my user account it said "Cannot find the file specified". I rebooted and ran the Startup Repair and Memory Diagnostics but nothing showed up. I also took the battery out for a minute and tried again but still no luck. The weird thing is that I cannot even boot into safe mode, it still shows the same error. I don't remember downloading or opening anything suspicious recently, and I have 3 different cleaners/anti-malware programs as well that I usually run about once a week. I did go into the registry recently but I didn't modify or delete anything as I was only checking to see if I had a certain key in it. I have a Dell laptop running Vista Home Basic SP2. If I have to I can reinstall the OS with the CD or even take it to Best Buy but I'd rather try and fix it first. Thanks.

• Can't Connect To A Game Server

  I'm having issues connecting to a certain game server. The game is Space Engineers. I did a wireshark and the owner of the server did as well and it just tries to request and bind until it times out on the client of the game. Nothing is dropped or red it just doesn't connect to download data from the server. Other people are able to connect to the server just fine. I do not think it is an issue with the server, but what could it possibly be and what can I do to get rid of this problem? I've tried cleaning registry, shutting off windows firewall, restarting my computer, and most recently the wireshark. Thanks,

• How to set a character set per application in *nix?

  I am attempting to set a character set of IBM850 on slackware linux for a particular application (epic5). Im using rxvt-unicode and have setup LANG/LC_*=en_US. Now if I set the encoding to IBM850 in kde's konsole program im able to display certain characters correctly. I'd rather not use IBM850 for everything; is there a way to set/alias a command for a per application execution? Ive tried things like: LC_CTYPE=IBM850 epic5 LC_ALL=IBM850 epic5 No success. Any help would be appreciated

• Force firefox to open pages in a specific tab using command line

  Hey Guys, Here's the challenge--I developed Softphone Screenpop PHP App that takes caller id info and searches for a match in our db, also allows us to collect call statistics. Great for our management but it's driving our reps nuts. We use firefox here and when our softphone pops to the external page, every time it opens in a new tab, the girls quickly get 5-10 open and it becomes confusing. Our softphone will also run command line. I wondering if there is a way to have a URL open in a certain tab. Otherwise does anyone have any other ideas? Thanks!

• Is there a way to read the contents of the master boot record?

  Reading another question on here it made me curious if it's possible to actually read the contents of the mbr. As I understand it, there's a certain area at the very front of the partition that lists this information. I'm curious if it's sort of like an ini file or some sort of script that runs and tells the computer what it needs to know about where to boot from and other information like sectors, heads, cylinders that's important. I don't know much about what would be in it, but I thought it'd be interesting to learn more about the specifics.

• need help from some professional how to redirect old or invalid url

  I recently upgraded a site and almost all URLs have changed. I have redirected all of them (or so I hope) but it may be possible that some of them have slipped by me. Is there a way to somehow catch all invalid URLs and send the user to a certain page and somehow know what URL the person came from so I could log this, and fix those? I'm thinking I could use .htaccess somehow but am not sure how. • Wifi Signal Strengths

  I hope that I have asked this question in the right topic. Basically I use BT (In the U.K.) and I have problems with my router receiving a strong signal in certain rooms of the house, which, therefore makes the internet really slow in some cases it won't work at all. I have had experience working with Virgin Media (UK) before and just changed the channel number and this worked fine, but, do not know if I would receive the same outcome on BT. Could anyone suggest any other things that I could try alongside of the channel change in order to /hopefully/ get a stronger signal, without having to install Ethernet cable?

• Best Practice for upgrading PHP On Production Systems

  We Have two load balanced web servers running php 5.3. I've been asked by our dev team to upgrade php to 5.4 because they need certain functionality it will bring. The main issue is that 5.3 is the latest thats been built into the distros repository, so to upgrade using the package manager, Ill need to add another 3rd party repo. I dont have a problem with this per se, but Im concerned about using a package from a "non official" source. The other option is to compile php from source, but I guess this will prevent me from using the package manager to upgrade at any stage in the future? So I guess Im just looking for some guidance on which way to go. Compile from source or install from any old repo that purports to supply php 5.4? Or perhaps theres a third option I havent considered? Thanks in advance Demic

  Is there anyway to make a folder or a partition on a computer (Linux/windows) to act like a flash drive to other computers or devices when connected with a usb cable. For example, I have a windows 7 computer with 2 partitions c and d, then connect that computer to another computer or a smart TV using a USB cable (has to be male to male USB cable) then the other computer or TV recognizes the current computer as a usb device. Is that possible, if not is there any usb switch to connect an external hard drive or flash drive to both the computer and TV without the need to manually switch them (I know about some USB switches but they only support automatic switching with some certain types of printers, not with mass storage) Thanks in advanced! • Tool to automate basic connectivity testing

  After our vendors have setup a certain test environment, we need to go in to perform connectivity testing between PC to servers and also between servers. The problem is that we run a range of tests to telnet between 2 nodes on several ports and this is a manual and rather tedious process. Does anyone know of a small tool or script that I can take input on the range of ports to be test and will run an automated range of testing against those ports? • Load balanced proxies to avoid an API request limit

  There is a certain API out there which limits the number of requests per day per IP. My plan is to create a bunch of EC2 instances with elastic IPs to sidestep the limitation. I'm familiar with EC2 and am just interested in the configuration of the proxies and a software load balancer. I think I want to run a simple TCP Proxy on each instance and a software load balancer on the machine I will be requesting from. Something that allows the following to return a response from a different IP (round robin, availability, doesn't really matter..) eg. curl http://www.bbc.co.uk -x http://myproxyloadbalancer:port Could anyone recommend a combination of software or even a link to an article that details a pleasing way to pull it off? (My client won't be curl but is proxy aware.. I'll be making the requests from a Ruby script..)

I want to include recursively any_dir_name/any_file_name.good but I want to exclude any and all files that are in bad_dir_name/ I used exclude-from and here is my exclude from file * /*.bad_dir_name/ Unfortunately it doesn't work. I suspect it may have something to do with --include="*/" but if I remove it the command doesn't sync any files at all. Thanks for the help.

This processing consists of appending the message to a locally stored txt-file and send it as http, with a post variable to another server. I've looked into Nginx but as far is can see this server can only be bound to receive http packets. Although it is asynchronous. What is the best way to achieve this listening-service on linux? It would be Lubuntu with 1G or 512M memory and I want to have way to setup my image.   There are many examples showing how to use .htaccess to restrict users by login or on their IP address (i.e they are ok from the ones given without authorisation). For some reason the following is never mentioned, yet it seems quite useful. How do I restrict using groups and ip, e.g. group1 can access the page from anywhere group2 can access the page only from certain IP addresses if you are not logged on, you cant see the page, regardless where you are I would like to have all 3 of these working at the same time.

  I would like to restrict access to certain URLs with htpasswd files, rather than folders, is this possible? For example, I wish to restrict the URL: www.example.com/pages/id/227/Restricted_Page But allow access to other URLs such as: www.example.com/pages/id/100/Normal_Page Is this possible? The "pages" part of the url refers to a pages.php file, and the "id" part is the function name in that file. The reason for wanting to do this is because of migrating existing restrict lists, in the form of htpasswd files from another site. Many thanks.

My account is an administrator account. I left only Systems and Administrator on the list. However, when I tried to access drive D, I got an Access Denied error, and Security Tab is already missing.i resolved the problem using safe mode way but i got another problem, I'd used command prompt to hide(attrib) a folder in drive D but i can't access it, though i can access all other files. • Apache 406 error with JPEGCam

  We have recently migrated our website to a new server, and JPEGCam is now reporting a 406 (Not Acceptable) error when trying to upload the image from the SWF to the server. I know that it isn't supported any more by the developer, but I wondered if anyone has encountered this problem before. I suspected the issue was with the Mod_Security module in Apache (i.e. not whitelisting Shockwave Flash), but the server admins have also drawn a blank. The request is being sent as a POST method, and returns a 406 error, but according to the Apache logs, it is returning a 404 error. I wondered if anyone has encountered this problem before, or knows of a 'simple' fix. Everything was working on our Xampp flavour dev server, so I am 100% certain this is an Apache issue. Also, when trying to access the requested page directly in the web browser, everything gets served up without a problem...

• How can I avoid logging file not founds commonly caused by vulnerability scanners?

  My apache logs are pretty much full of 'admin.php' not found or unable to stat and similar statements for wp-login.php, default.php, and so on that are often sought after by vulnerability scanners. Can I configure apache to avoid logging these statements for certain files? I don't want to filter out all file not founds as I'd like to fix bad links that I may have put out over the years that no longer correspond to the same files. I can use a tool like fail2ban or denyhosts, but from previous experiences it comes from so many places that those errors are still going to pile up, and the reducing those error messages are what this question is asking about.

• A unique identifier for a Domain

  I asked a question over on StackOverflow and was directed to ask a related one here to see if I could get any additional input. Basically, I am looking to have my application aware of what domain it's running under, if any at all. (I want to expose certain debugging facilities only in house, and due to our deployment model it isn't possible to have a different build.) Since I am over paranoid, I didn't want to just rely on the domain name to ensure we are in house. As such I noted the DOMAIN_CONTROLLER_INFO (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms675912(v=vs.85).aspx ) returned from DsGetDcName (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms675983(v=vs.85).aspx) has a GUID associated with it, however I can find little if any information on it. I am assuming this GUID is generated at the time the first DC in a domain is created, and that it would live on for the life of the domain. Does anyone else have any inner knowledge and would be kind enough to confirm or deny my assumptions?

  I've inherited a windows VM running Oracle Database 10g. Currently the VM has only one CPU assigned to it, but I can boost this up to 4 with our VMWare licenses. What I'm not yet certain about is if the Oracle Software will get upset. Are Oracle DB CPU limits enforced by software, and if so how do I find out what they?
