  Hi All, We currently have two asp.net 2.x web applications and we need to perform the following functionality: From one application, we want to auto-login to the other web application automatically in a new tab; using the same browser instance/window. So the process is: Open New Window/Tab With Second System URL/Login Page Wait For Popup Window/Tab Page To Load (DOM Ready?) OnPopupDomReady { Get Usename, Password, PIN Controls (jQuery Selectors) and Populate In Code Then Click Login Button (All Programatically). } I am currently using JavaScript to Open the window as follows: <script type="text/javascript"> $(document).ready(function () { $('a[rel="external"]').click(function () { window.open($(this).attr('href')); return false; }); }); </script> I would like to use jQuery chaining functionality if possible to extent the method above so that I can attach a DOM Ready event to the popped up page and then use that event to call a method on the code behind of the popped up page to automatically login.   Trying to compile an application (flite synthesis sapi) on vc++6. This requires Microsoft Speech SDK 5.1 Have included C:\Program Files\Microsoft Speech SDK 5.1\IDL C:\Program Files\Microsoft Speech SDK 5.1\include using Toolsoptionsdirectories and also on another attempt via ProjectSettings Repeatedly get this error microsoft fatal error C1083: Cannot open source file: 'files\microsoft': No such file or directory speech fatal error C1083: Cannot open source file: 'speech': No such file or directory sdk fatal error C1083: Cannot open source file: 'sdk': No such file or directory idl fatal error C1083: Cannot open source file: '5.1\idl': No such file or directory FliteCMUKalDiphone.idl Thought it may be spaces related so included full path in quotes in relevant .h files. No joy Installed Microsoft Speech SDK 5.1 on another machine in same folder as flite and renamed to mssdk51 (so no spaces in pathname) but same error came up. Tried pasting in contents of each .idl called in file where glitch seems to generate Still same message. I am new to C++ and programming in general. My only guess is that something in the speech sdk is calling the .idl file and I can't find where from. Of course this is probably way wrong!

• Metro: Introduction to CSS 3 Grid Layout

  The purpose of this blog post is to provide you with a quick introduction to the new W3C CSS 3 Grid Layout standard. You can use CSS Grid Layout in Metro style applications written with JavaScript to lay out the content of an HTML page. CSS Grid Layout provides you with all of the benefits of using HTML tables for layout without requiring you to actually use any HTML table elements. Doing Page Layouts without Tables Back in the 1990’s, if you wanted to create a fancy website, then you would use HTML tables for layout. For example, if you wanted to create a standard three-column page layout then you would create an HTML table with three columns like this: <table height="100%"> <tr> <td valign="top" width="300px" bgcolor="red"> Left Column, Left Column, Left Column, Left Column, Left Column, Left Column, Left Column, Left Column, Left Column </td> <td valign="top" bgcolor="green"> Middle Column, Middle Column, Middle Column, Middle Column, Middle Column, Middle Column, Middle Column, Middle Column, Middle Column </td> <td valign="top" width="300px" bgcolor="blue"> Right Column, Right Column, Right Column, Right Column, Right Column, Right Column, Right Column, Right Column, Right Column </td> </tr> </table> When the table above gets rendered out to a browser, you end up with the following three-column layout: The width of the left and right columns is fixed – the width of the middle column expands or contracts depending on the width of the browser. Sometime around the year 2005, everyone decided that using tables for layout was a bad idea. Instead of using tables for layout — it was collectively decided by the spirit of the Web — you should use Cascading Style Sheets instead. Why is using HTML tables for layout bad? Using tables for layout breaks the semantics of the TABLE element. A TABLE element should be used only for displaying tabular information such as train schedules or moon phases. Using tables for layout is bad for accessibility (The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0 is explicit about this) and using tables for layout is bad for separating content from layout (see http://CSSZenGarden.com). Post 2005, anyone who used HTML tables for layout were encouraged to hold their heads down in shame. That’s all well and good, but the problem with using CSS for layout is that it can be more difficult to work with CSS than HTML tables. For example, to achieve a standard three-column layout, you either need to use absolute positioning or floats. The page above (almost) works with the most recent versions of most browsers. For example, you get the correct three-column layout in both Firefox and Chrome: And the layout mostly works with Internet Explorer 9 except for the fact that for some strange reason the min-width doesn’t work so when you shrink the width of your browser, you can get the following unwanted layout: Notice how the middle column (the green column) bleeds to the left and right. People have solved these issues with more complicated CSS. For example, see: http://matthewjamestaylor.com/blog/holy-grail-no-quirks-mode.htm But, at this point, no one could argue that using CSS is easier or more intuitive than tables. It takes work to get a layout with CSS and we know that we could achieve the same layout more easily using HTML tables. Using CSS Grid Layout CSS Grid Layout is a new W3C standard which provides you with all of the benefits of using HTML tables for layout without the disadvantage of using an HTML TABLE element. In other words, CSS Grid Layout enables you to perform table layouts using pure Cascading Style Sheets. The CSS Grid Layout standard is still in a “Working Draft” state (it is not finalized) and it is located here: http://www.w3.org/TR/css3-grid-layout/ The CSS Grid Layout standard is only supported by Internet Explorer 10 and there are no signs that any browser other than Internet Explorer will support this standard in the near future. This means that it is only practical to take advantage of CSS Grid Layout when building Metro style applications with JavaScript. You want the size of the first column to be fixed at 200 pixels and you want to divide the remaining space among the remaining three columns. The width of the second column is equal to the combined width of the third and fourth columns. The following CSS rule creates four columns with the desired widths: #container { display: -ms-grid; -ms-grid-columns: 200px 2fr 1fr 1fr; -ms-grid-rows: 1fr; } The fr unit represents a fraction. The grid above contains four columns. The second column is two times the size (2fr) of the third (1fr) and fourth (1fr) columns. When you use the fractional unit, the remaining space is divided up using fractional amounts. Notice that the single row is set to a height of 1fr. The single grid row gobbles up the entire vertical space.   This might be a straightforward question, even though I haven't found an easy solution to it: I've implemented my custom UITypeEditor with the sole purpose of adding a PaintValue to bools. For the sake of the discussion, let's assume that PaintValue will either paint a checked or unchecked radiobutton. Question 1: Now, here's the problem: It seems like PaintValue automatically inserts a 20x13px rectangle after all paint code has completed. Naturally, a radiobutton inside a black rectangle is ugly. Can I easily instruct or override this rectagle not to be painted? Question 2: In this respect, is it possible to paint on top of the propertygrid's native look - meaning could I paint something in order to obscure (part of) the black line separating two grid cells vertically? The purpose of doing this would be to indicate that two values were linked, like constrained width/height to an aspect ratio.

• iPhone Open GL ES using FBX - How do I import animations from FBX into iPhone?

  I've been researching this extensively. We have a game that's 90% complete, using custom game logic in iPhone 4.0. We've been asked to import a 3D model and have it animate when various events happen in the game. I've put together an OpenGL view (based on Eagl and several examples), and used Blender to import the model, as well as Jeff LeMarche's script to export the .h file. After much trial, it worked, and I was able to show a rotating model (unskinned). However, the 3d artist hadn't UV unwrapped the model, so provided me a new model, this one as a Maya file, along with animation in a FBX format, a .obj file, and .tga texture unwrapped. My question is : how can I use FBX inside OpenGL ES inside iPhone to run through animations? And what's the pipeline to get this Maya file into Blender to be able to create a .h file. I've tried the obj2opengl however the model is missing normals (did it have it in the first place?) and the skin isn't applying at all (possibly a code issue, something I think I can fix). I'm trying to use Jeff LeMarche's animation tutorial but can't figure out how to get the model files into a proper .h file for use. Any advice?

• Meet Peter, 80 years old today

  You have to arrive at the office early in the morning to meet Peter. He arrives at 5am and by 8:30am he's gone. Peter has been a cleaner here for several years. He is 80 years old today. Peter was born only a couple of km from our office in Cambridge, England and was for many years an Engineer for Pye Electronics. I'm lucky enough to arrive in the office early enough to catch Peter, dressed smarter than most of us in shirt and tie, and he tells stories of how Cambridge was years ago. He says the site of our office is on land between what would have been a prisoner of war camp (camp 1025), and a few hundred metres North, a camp of American allies. In February 1944, Peter was 13 years old. One night, a Dornier Do 217 heavy bomber heading towards London was hit by anti-aircraft fire and the crew of four parachuted from the plane. The plane however, continued on autopilot for over 50km. Gradually dropping lower and lower, narrowly missing the spires of Cambridge, it eventually came to land, largely intact, in allotment gardens by Peter's house near Milton Road. He told me that he was quick to the scene, along with some other young lads, and grabbed parts of the plane as souvenirs. It's one of many tales that Peter recounts, but I happened to discover a chapter about this particular plane crash in a history book called the War Torn Skies of Great Britain by Julian Evan-Hart. It reads: 'It slid to a halt in the allotment gardens of Milton Road. The cockpit ended up crumpled against a wooden fence and several incendiary bombs that had broken loose from their containers in the ruptured bomb bay were strewn over the ground behind the Dornier.' I smiled when I read the following line: 'Many residents came to see the Dornier in the allotments. Several lads made off with souvenirs' It seems a young Peter has been captured in print! For his birthday, among other things, we gave him a copy of the book. Working for a software company and rushing headlong through the 21st century, it's easy to forget even our recent history, or what feet stood on the same ground before us. That aircraft crashed only 700 metres from where our office now stands. The disused and overgrown railway line that runs down the side of the office closed to passengers 30 years ago. The industrial estate the other side was the site of a farm, Trinity Hall Farm, as recently as 60 years ago. Roman rings and Palaeolithic handaxes have been unearthed nearby. I suppose Peter will be one of the last people I'll ever hear talking first-hand about Cambridge during the war. It's a privilege to know him. Happy birthday Peter.

  Chidamber & Kemerer proposed several metrics for object oriented code. Among them, depth of inheritance tree, weighted number of methods, number of member functions, number of children, and coupling between objects. Using a base of code, they tried to correlated these metrics to the defect density and maintenance effort using covariant analysis. Are these metrics actionable in projects? Perhaps they can guide refactoring. For example weighted number of methods might show which God classes needed to be broken into more cohesive classes that address a single concern. Is there approach superseded by a better method, and is there a tool that can identify problem code, particularly in moderately large project being handed off to a new developer or team?

An example http://www.londonofficespace.com/ofdj17062004934429t.htm Title tag is: Unfurnished Office Space Wimbledon – Serviced Office on Lombard Road SW19 But is indexed as: Lombard Road – SW19 - London Office Space If you look in the source code and search for this portion ‘Lombard Road – SW19’ You then find that it's next to an office image alt=’Lombard Road – SW19’. The only thing I could think of is that the spider somehow ‘skips’ our title tag and grabs this bit, and then inserts the name of the site (but WHY?) Is there anything I can do with this? or is this a Google behaviour?

• How do I open up firewall while keeping it safe?

  Since I've installed Firestarter I have encountered connectivity issues that are all resolved by disabling the firewall. I'd prefer to have the firewall running and allow all the traffic I normally use: Wired network + wireless network, whichever I'm connected to, or both (1) OpenVPN VirtualBox internal network Samba (for accessing shared Windows folders and sharing folders to Windows) (2) BitTorrent And everything else I use that I can't think of :) All the above works without a firewall. I thought Linux was super secure (I update regularly). Do I really need it? (1) I used the Firestarter wizard and selected wlan0 as my primary connection, now whenever I plug in a network cable, I lose all connectivity. Should I just redo the wizard for eth0, or will I then lose wlan0? (2) If it makes a difference I'm sharing a directory that I share between local users using bindfs. [y] It can't seem to find A::B in the system, although it is installed, and when it tries to auto-install the module from CPAN, it tries to write it into the system directory (ignoring PREFIX). I have tried using variables like PERL_LIB and LIB on the command line, after PREFIX=..., but nothing I have done seems to work. I can do make and make install successfully, but I can't do make test because of this problem. Any suggestions? I found some advice at http://servers.digitaldaze.com/extensions/perl/modules.html to use an environment variable PERL5LIB, but this also doesn't seem to work: export PERL5LIB=/non/system/location/lib/perl5/ didn't solve the problem.

• When using a package or framework is there a standard way to use version control?

  i.e. Do you put the whole package under VCS or just the components you are programming? Packages by there nature will get upgraded and that code will need to be added into the VCS, plus there is a lot of code that is static. Specifically I am going to be working on Joomla, adding and building modules, customising modules and the look and feel. Initially this will be just me but will expand to possibly two more developers as the project ramps up. My reaction would be just to VCS the lot, it means that i know it is all there and deployment via CI is easier(?). The alternative is to exclude the bulk of the code that is not being altered which could be error prone and laborious. As there is not a specific answer for this and i am looking for either experience or best practice advice i have marked it community wiki.
