• Can't Drag & Drop text to unity launcher (e.g. url's, highlighted text)

  I'm trying to create a unity launcher icon (.dekstop file) on which you can drop any (selected/highlighted) text from a web browser, google chrome in my case. I know you can use the "MimeType=" key in a .desktop file, but I can't find the right mime type for my scenario. I've tried several text MimeTypes and "text/*", but none of them would work. Does anyone know which MimeType I have to use in order for my launcher icon to accept text when hovering over it?

• Ultimate way to use Picasa in a home network

  I've been trying a lot of approaches but still didn't find any effective solution. I want gigs of photos in a network drive (a IOMega Home Media Network Drive, plugged to my wifi router). I'd like to do 2 things: Do a Picasa import process of all the photos in the drive, making Picasa organize all the files in a year/month folder structure physically. Ideally, the import target directory should be the same network drive, otherwise I should move all the imported files in my local computer back to the drive myself. Share the Picasa database over the network, by uploading it to the network drive. Have me and other members of the family point our Picasas to the network database, and see the photos as well as make changes (tag faces, create logical albums, etc) into it. Is ANY possibility to accomplish this? Or should I be looking for another photo management app, and in that case do you know such one? Thank you!

  Is it at least possible to build Hadoop cluster from Raspberry Pi-based nodes? Can such a cluster meet hardware requirements of Hadoop? And if so, how much Raspberry Pi nodes are required to meet requirements? I understand that a cluster from several Raspberry Pi nodes being cheap is not powerful. My purpose is to organize cluster without possibility of loosing personal data from my desktop or notebook, and to use this cluster studying Hadoop. I'd appreciate if you suggest any better ideas of organizing a cheap Hadoop cluster for studying purposes. UPD: I've seen that recommended amount of memory for Hadoop is 16-24GB, multi-core processors, and 1TB of HDD, but it doesn't look like minimal requirements.

  Sorry for the stupid question but I am new with Linux (I am using Gnome classic with Ubuntu 12.04) and I cannot set compiz in order to obtain the rotating cube. I have already installed compizconfig-setting-manager and also the extra (and fusion) plugins but: even if I disable the desktop wall and enable cube and rotating cube, nothing happens; even if I change into general settings the number of vertical and horizontal virtual size nothing happens.   I have a small webapp in java and I am adding the internationalization support, replacing texts with labels that are defined in dictionary files. While some texts are obviously unique to each view (v.g. the html title), other refer to concepts from the model (v.g. a ticket, the location or status of such ticket, etc.) As usual, some terms will appear many times in different locations (vg, in both the edition page and in the search page and in the listings I have a "ticketLocation" label). My question is: can I organize the labels around the model concepts (so I have a ticket.location label and I use it everywhere such field is labeled) or should I make a different label for each (so form.ticketLocation and filter.ticketLocation and list.ticketLocation). I would go for the first option; I have searched for tips and the only thing that I see that could hinder me is due to the length of the string disrupting the design, and even for that I would prefer having to add a ticket.locationShort for places where there is not much space. What is your opinion/tips/experience?

• Why is my background image always disappearing when I log in?

  When logging in lubuntu 12.04, my background image always disappears, leaving the screen with color only and then I have to go to definitions and set the image in the background again. I notice that this does not happen with low-resolution images, only with high ones, but also happens with images that fit my screen resolution (1280 X 720). Any ideas on how to fix this? The image remains at it's location, but on the desktop preferences, the pathway to the file location is lost and set to none.

When using the desktop version I could use the Gnome powersaving tool to specify the idle time. As I have no GUI on the server is there a way to set the server idle time via the commandline/config file? I will send the server a wake-on-lan packet to wake it up, if it is suspended and I need to use it.

• Accidently system timer speed up

  Laptop: Acer 5750zg I've found this issue in latest Ubuntu versions (13.04, 14.04) in all desktop environment. When I'm typing something in text field, randomly I get ~5..20 same symbols and everything speed up. It's happen few times per one minute and start from normal speed, slowly rising to super boost animation and other processes like CPU monitor, clock, window animation, etc. I think something wrong with system clock.   For a game web app that runs Python on the server side and Javascript / HTML on the client side I'd like to build an offline version that runs in Chrome and on the mobile devices. What is the most convenient way currently available to target Chrome, Win 8 Desktop (with a Win packaged app) and the mobile devices reusing most of the code? Options could be PhoneGap for the mobile devices and PyJs for the offline browser versions or maybe translate Python to Dart manually (because of the closer semantics of the two languages) and compile to Javascript.

• Google Chrome (not chromium) is crashing XFCE on startup. Where can I find some detailed logs of the issue?

  I'm using xubuntu 12.10 and every time I open Chrome, the desktop enviro crashes then automatically restarts, prompting me to log in again. This is the latest x86 .deb downloaded from Chrome's website. I've tried both installing the .deb using the software package manager and using sudo dpkg -i, same issue for both, except that the package manager puts out an alert that says "This package is of bad quality", but doing a quick google search reveals that particular message is a bug in Chrome and it's safe to ignore.
