  • secure rest API for running user "apps" in an iframe

    I want to let users create "apps" (like Facebook apps) for my website, and I'm trying to figure out the best way to make it secure. I have a REST api i want to run the user apps in an iframe on my own site (not a safe markup language like FBML) I was first looking at oAuth but this seems overkill for my solution. The "apps" don't need to be run on external sites or in desktop apps or anything. The user would stay on my site at all times but see the user submitted "app" through the iframe. So when I call the app the first time through the iframe, I can pass it some variables so it knows which logged in user is using it on my site. It can then use this user session in it's own API calls to customize the display. If the call is passed in the clear, I don't want someone to be able to intercept the session and impersonate the user. Does anyone know a good way to do this or good write up on it? Thanks!

  • Mysql results sorted by list which is unique for each user

    Ive got a table of thousands of products and 50 or so authenticated users. These users all show the products on their own web sites and they all require the ability to have them ordered differently. Im guesing i need some kind of seperate table for the orders which contains the product_id, user_id and order column? How do i do this the most efficiently in mysql so as to be very fast, and not slow down if i get millions of products in the database. Is it even wise to do it in mysql or should i be using some kind of other index like solr/lucene? My Product table is called "products" My User table is called "users" A good example of the functionality i need is google search where you can order/supress the results if you are logged in. edit: the product results will be paginated and the users have the authority to edit the products, so its not just ready only

  • Next, Previous Records Using Named Scope

    I have a model for which I want to retrieve the next record(s) and previous record(s). I want to do this via a named_scope on the model, and also pass in as an argument the X number of next/previous records to return. For example, let's say I have 5 records: Record1 Record2 Record3 Record4 Record5 I want to be able to call Model.previous or Model.previous(1) to return Record2. Similarly, I want to be able to call Model.next or Model.next(1) to return Record4. As another example I want to be able to call Model.previous(2) to return Record3. I think you get the idea. How can I accomplish this?

    This is a toy project I'm working on at the moment. My app contains questions with multiple choice answers. The question url is in the following format, with GET & POST mapping to different actions on the questions controller. GET: url.com/questions/:category/:difficulty => 'ask' POST: url.com/questions/:category/:difficulty => 'answer' I'm wondering if it's worth redesigning this into a RESTful style. I know I'd need to introduce answers as a resource, but I'm struggling to think of a url that would look natural for answering that question. Would a redesign be worthwhile? How would you go about structuring the urls?

  • Running tasks in the background with lower CPU priority

    I have a feature in my CMS that allows a user to upload a zip file full of images and the server will extract them and insert each one into an image gallery. I've noticed that this grinds up the CPU quite severely and causes other requests to slow down. I'm thinking of using the delayed_job plugin to delegate each image addition into the background, but I also want to give that process a lower CPU priority so that it doesn't bog down the server. I'm pretty confident in the delaying part of the exercise, but the throttling part is where I'm stuck. Is there a ruby way of lowering the priority of a method call? It's the image resizing that causes the CPU chew. Any ideas welcome :)

  • jQuery RJS inserting string vs dom.

    So I am trying to use jQuery to insert data from an ajax call. I actually use the jquery.form plugin, and have the ajax form submitted with a dataType: 'script'. The response is a jquery expression which contains a <%= javascript_escape(render ...) %> erb tag (similar to what the railscasts episode 136 instructs to do). However the end result is that the full text of the render is inserted as if that was the content to be inserted into the page, as text, not as dom elements. Could the fact that the render had some newlines at the beginning be the cause? Dom text: "\n \n &lt;li>....&lt;/li>" I also tried having jQuery just read the response as a script and execute it, and used the prototype-based rjs stuff, same effect, the text is inserted into the dom. Are there any reasons why such a behavior would be experienced? A bit of clarification: My response.js.erb is jQuery("#content").append("<%= escape_javascript(render(:partial => "widgets")) %>"); jQuery("#information").text("Finally, something happened!"); The full text inside the append() call is inserted as text into #content.

  • Simple cropping with Paperclip

I find out a method in documentation that seems to do exactly what I want: transformation_to(dst, crop = false) The problem is that I can't figure out where to use this method.     I have the following classes: Project Person Person Developer Person Manager In the Project model I have added the following statements: has_and_belongs_to_many :people accepts_nested_attributes_for :people And of course the appropriate statements in the class Person. How can I add an Developer to a Project through the nested_attributes method? The following does not work: @p.people_attributes = [{:name => "Epic Beard Man", :type => "Developer"}] @p.people => [#<Person id: nil, name: "Epic Beard Man", type: nil>] As you can see the type attributes is set to nil instead of Developer.

  • ActiveScaffold complains about association

    I'm using ActiveScaffold to create an Admin UI. I have two models: Post and Comments. A Post has-many Comments, and a Comment belongs-to a post. There's a validates_presences_of :text validation the Comment model. The problem is that when I create a new Post from the Admin UI without creating a new Comment in the subform, ActiveScaffold complains about the validation. I can create the Post if I also create a Comment associated with it, which is not what I Want. I can create a new Post manually from script/console. What gives?

  • Authlogic_OpenID - "uninitialized constant Rack::OpenID"

    So I followed the railscast tutorial (http://railscasts.com/episodes/170-openid-with-authlogic) and used the old version of the plugin from Ryan's git file. I can now successfuly create/register a user using OpenID (Google), but I cannot log in with this user. When I submit the OpenID that has been registered, I get "uninitialized constant Rack::OpenID". Any ideas? Thanks!

    Hi, I'm not sure how to do this... I have a database which contains a messages and categories tables. The categories table has a field which has a count of the number of messages related to it. Sometimes however I need to deactivate (active = 0) a message, at the moment this doesn't then update the category table... I will implement this is in the end but for the time I would just like to run a script perhaps daily that goes through all the categories, counts up the messages and updates the field.     I'm already using gravatar icons for the users of my web service. However, I'm finding several problems with this approach: Only a small percentage of the users take the time to set up a gravatar profile. My users are not tech-savvy, but would be likely to add a dedicated photo to my site. Users of my service are encouraged to use images that depict them in proper uniform for the industry my service relates to. They wouldn't want that same picture to be used for personal purposes throughout the internet. They would not take the time or effort to manage a separate email address and gravatar account just to have an "in-uniform" profile photo for my service. Before I implement my own profile image feature, I was wondering if there are any open-source solutions that I could leverage with similar features to gravatar. Specifically: The ability to display any size thumbnail (up to 512px would be fine) Takes care of caching different sized thumbnails Has support for something like identicons, preferably pluggable with different style algorithms (monsters, etc.), even better if I can customize these Ability to fall-back to gravatar if no photo found Does anything like this exist? I haven't found it yet if it does.
