• OS choice for functional developing

  I'm mainly a .NET developer so I normaly use Windows/VisualStudio (that means: I'm spoiled) but I'm enjoying Haskell and other (mostly functional) languagues in my spare time. Now for Haskell the windows-support is ok (you can get the Haskell-Platform) but latley I tried to get a basic Clojure/Scheme environment set up and it's just a pain on windows. So I'm thinking about trying out another OS for better tooling and languague support. Of course that leaves me with MacOS or some Linux distribution. I never used MacOS before and of course Linux would be cheaper (free) and I don't think I can parallel-boot MacOS on your normal PC-Hardware (can you?). PLUS: I don't have a clue about the tools you can use on those (to me) forign OSs. To make it short: I want to explore more Haskell, Clojure, Scala, Scheme and of course need at least good tooling for JavaScript/HTML5/Css. Support for .NET/Mono/F# would be great but for this I will still have my Win7 boot. So I like to know: - what is your prefered OS, Distribution (is Ubuntu viable?) - what Editor/IDE are you using Thank you for your help! • KDE: How can I select audio output device for mplayer?

  I recently installed Kubuntu 13.10 64-bit, and I'm having a problem with selecting audio output device. In Phonon, when I select audio device preference order and press Apply, Amarok and Dragon will immediately switch to the preferred device. VLC and SMplayer are not affected. VLC has its own setting for selecting the output device, but SMplayer remains a problem. It always plays audio on internal audio, and I can't change output to HDMI. How can I select HDMI for SMplayer's audio output device? I don't know if it matters, but when I select HDMI audio in Phonon and click Test, the test sound plays on the internal audio output as well. In the hardware settings tab, the front left and front right test buttons play audio on HDMI. Also, volume up/down buttons affect HDMI volume when SMplayer is focused. This would make sense if I could get SMplayer to play audio over HDMI, but it would be better if the volume keys affected SMplayer's own volume, or the "mplayer2: audio stream" which appears in volume control while mplayer is playing. EDIT: I've recompiled mplayer with alsa support, and can now select the audio output device from SMplayer's settings. Didn't affect the issue with Phonon of course, but it's a suitable workaround.

• Sound not working after installing PCI video card and then removing it

  I am running 11.10 on a HP/Compaq Presario sr1010z, and the video/audio was working fine with whatever was in the machine already. Then I installed a new video card (PCI/nVidia), which disabled the audio/video on the old one automatically. But that card didn't work out too well so I removed it. Now the video is back to normal, but the audio is gone. I have tried the following: 1. In BIOS, set audio to on/enable rather than Auto 2. Looked for hardware in System Settings Sound, but nothing shows up there 3. But when I run the sysinfo utility, I get the description of the audio controller When I do a 'sudo aplay -l', I get 'aplay: device_list:240: no soundcards found...' And then when I do a 'lspci -v | grep -A7 -i "audio"' I get the following: 00:02.7 Multimedia audio controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] SiS7012 AC'97 Sound Controller (rev a0) Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Device 2a05 Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 32, IRQ 5 I/O ports at a000 [size=256] I/O ports at a400 [size=128] Capabilities: 00:03.0 USB Controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] USB 1.1 Controller (rev 0f) (prog-if 10 [OHCI]) Any ideas on how to fix this? • Huwawei E220 broadband dongle not working

  The problem is, I have used Ubuntu from 6.10 upto 11.10. And upto 11.04 I used my same USB 3G dongle to connect to broadband and it worked fine. But 2 days ago I upgraded to Ubuntu 11.10 and broadband is not working. It detects my dongle and creates a connection without a problem, but when connecting it just keeps on and on for a long time and then say I'm offline. So I did a clean install and the same thing occurred. But I also have a netbook and its got Ubuntu 11.10. I tried using the same dongle for internet on that netbook and it worked fine without any issues. But this isn't a problem with my USB port on my main machine or something like that because I'm also using Windows on my main machine (dual-boot) and its working fine. My hardware: Main computer (one that I'm trying to connect): 2.8GHz dual core Intel 2GB RAM 500GB Sata II HDD 384MB Video Memory (Intel G31/G33 chipset) Ubuntu 11.10 (32bit) My NetBook (broadband working fine): 1.6GHz Intel Atom (dual core) 1GB DDR3 RAM 250GB HDD 128MB Video Memory (Intel something-I-can't-remember) Ubuntu 11.10 (32bit) My dongle is a Huawei E220 and ISP is Dialog GSM (I'm in Sri Lanka) So any idea why this is? • Simple multi-seat

  I've asked about multiseat before. The answer (for 10.04) involved doing it the proper way (eg through gdm, multiple server layouts). The problem was that gdm needs to be patched or reverted to 2.20 for multiseat. It's an ugly hack that, worse than anything, will hold up future updates. As a result, I didn't do anything. I still have a spare video card. I still have the monitor, keyboard and mouse all sitting waiting to jump into action. And I still want to be able to turn that into a simple desktop. My needs don't seem complicated. I have a second video card, a USB hub and anything connected to that USB hub that I want to be dedicated to another X server. I don't need a login screen (I'm happy hard-coding in a auto-login and I'd be happy with the user starting the X server if that's possible). This is so simple in my head that I only need two questions: How can I explicitly start an X server from the command line on an unused video adapter (by passing it whatever configuration I need to)? Can I have this new X session load a desktop environment on load? This seems like something you should be able to write in a little upstart script within 10 minutes. That would be perfect for me as then I'd have a nice start/stop control over the secondary desktop from the main desktop (that I want to leave unscathed!) I'm thinking something as simple as this for the payload: su -u other_user -c "startx -- localhost hardware-information" And use .xinitrc to load openbox or something...

• Impossible to enable bluetooth under Ubuntu

  I just installed Ubuntu 12.04 (dual boot, kept Windows just in case) on my new Acer Aspire One 756-877. As soon as I installed it I also installed the Broadcom driver, since wifi wasn't working, and that solved it right away. But when I tried Bluetooth, I had a problem that I see is quite recurring: -The hardware is on (and working fine under Windows) -The icon shows up on the menu, giving me the options of turning Bluetooth on or off, and then just "Bluetooth preferences". -I can apparently turn it on that way, which only lights up the icon but makes no difference at all (and doesn't give any other options in the Bluetooth menu) -When I open "Bluetooth preferences" (whether Bluetooth is apparently on or off, it makes no difference), it says it's disabled and will not let me slide the button to enable it. I've rebooted, but nothing happens. -The material is Broadcom and the port (if it's relevant at all) is Port_#0001.Hub_#0003 I tried the following commands suggested in other similar questions, with no result at all: sudo dmesg | grep blue and sudo service bluetooth start and sudo /etc/init.d/bluetooth start Any other clues on what I can do? • Cannot Create Bootable USB Drive from .iso file

  I've tried formatting the flash drive as FAT as well as Mac OS journaled through diskutility but still cannot successfully create a bootable drive. I'm following the directions here exactly: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/help/create-a-usb-stick-on-mac-osx Environment: Macbook Pro trying to create a bootable flash drive for a Macbook Pro. 8GB flash drive. Tested ubuntu-12.04.1 as well as ubuntu 12.20 .iso 64-bit downloads. Nothing to repair in disk utility for this hard drive. Every time I finish step 8 of the tutorial I get "file system not recognized" with the options to "initialize" meaning to reformat my drive, "ignore" or "eject." When I try to re-inspect the flash drive in disk utility after plugging it back in I see that it has some error when I try to verify it but the "repair" button is disabled. I just want to boot to ubuntu when my mac first starts up. • Alternative to NV Occlusion Query - getting the number of fragments which passed the depth test

  In "modern" environments, the "NV Occlusion Query" extension provide a method to get the number of fragments which passed the depth test. However, on the iPad / iPhone using OpenGL ES, the extension is not available. What is the most performant approach to implement a similar behaviour in the fragment shader? Some of my ideas: Render the object completely in white, then count all the colors together using a two-pass shader where first a vertical line is rendered and for each fragment the shader computes the sum over the whole row. Then, a single vertex is rendered whose fragment sums all the partial sums of the first pass. Doesn't seem to be very efficient. Render the object completely in white over a black background. Downsample recursively, abusing the hardware linear interpolation between textures until being at a reasonably small resolution. This leads to fragments which have a greyscale level depending on the number of white pixels where in their corresponding region. Is this even accurate enough? ... ?

• crippling repeating "pciehp card not present" notifications

  When using ubuntu (12.04, both installed and on a live usb) I get a lot of these messages: pciehp 0000:00:1c.5:pcie04: Card not present on Slot(37) pciehp 0000:00:1c.5:pcie04: Card present on Slot(37) And with a lot I mean about 20 per second. This has a crippling effect, and I would like to get rid of it :) The computer is a packard bell easynote BG48-U-100 DC. I tip I picked up from some fedora/redhat error here was to look at lspci -vnn. I have pasted the part about "00:1c.5" here: http://pastebin.com/0sfsiqW2 For what good it may do, here is the lsmod of my machine: http://pastebin.com/DQZy1kAL From that first pastebin I think to conclude that it has to do with the module shpchp, which seems to me (aka: google) to have something to do with ACPI. That's as far as I've come in disecting this. Can anyone help me along further? What can I do, check etc? I did see this topic but my intentions are not to surpress the error message: I know how to do this (from that topic ;) ), but I'm looking for a real sollution. Finding the problem on the internet does suspect me to believe it is neither an ubuntu specific nor a packard-bell specific problem.If you google the problem it seems that is present on several other distribution/hardware combo's as well, and it looks like the advice is to remove one of the drivers? I have no clue as to which driver I should look at and and what would be the effect of just removing it. I have seen this topic which is old-ish, but describes my problem and is about a similar computer. The solution in this topic was to compile a new kernel using a spanish guide, which seems a bit extreme to me, so I'm kinda hoping for a better solution than that.

• Multiple displays using AMD drivers

  I am currently running a dual display setup with nVidia 8800GTS video card, on a Ubuntu 12.10 box. The current setup uses nVidia TwinView to render the image on a 1920x1200 display and 1600x1200 one. I'm planning to add a third, 1280x1024 display to the setup. The change will require me to upgrade my GFX card to one supporting triple displays. I'll probably go with Sapphire Radeon 7770 (FLEX edition, to avoid additional active DP-DVI adapters). Before I invest in new GFX I wanted to ask - how well the AMD drivers will support such a setup. It does not matter whether it's fglrx or the OSS ones. If I remember correctly, when running Fedora on a Radeon x800, I had 'void' areas above and below the working area on my second display. The desktop was rendered in 1920+1280 width and 1200 height (which left 176px of vertical space accessible for my cursor and windows but not displayed on the screen - I'd prefer to avoid that). It may have very well been my misconfiguration back then. Generally, are there any solutions from AMD on par with TwinView? Or is it a non-issue at all? Also, I'm wondering about the usual stuff - hardware h264 decoding support, glitch-free flash support, any issues with Compiz/Unity?

• Skynet Big Data Demo Using Hexbug Spider Robot, Raspberry Pi, and Java SE Embedded (Part 3)

  In Part 2, I described what connections you need to make for this demo using a Hexbug Spider Robot, a Raspberry Pi, and Java SE Embedded for programming. Here are some photos of me doing the soldering. Software engineers should not be afraid of a little soldering work. It's all good. See: Skynet Big Data Demo (Part 2) One thing to watch out for when you open the remote is that there may be some glue covering the contact points. Make sure to use an Exacto knife or small screwdriver to scrape away any glue or non-conductive material covering each place where you need to solder. And after you are done with your soldering and you gave the solder enough time to cool, make sure all your connections are marked so that you know which wire goes where. Give each wire a very light tug to make sure it is soldered correctly and is making good contact. There are lots of videos on the Web to help you if this is your first time soldering. • My cpus are powered down periodically

  I post here because I am using Ubuntu but this is probably an hardware problem. Since I bought my new setup with AMD Athlon(tm) II X4 635 Processor and asus m4a89td pro/usb3 motherboard with ecc ram I have stuttering on videos. I was using ubuntu 11.10 now ubuntu 12.10. • How to focus on one topic? [closed]

  I have a huge problem while reading computer books. Every couple pages I'll end up googling something I want to learn more about, but then I'll find something on that page that I'll want to learn more about and google that (sometimes programming related, sometime hardware related). Normally after wasting around 3 hours going into different subjects I'll return to the original text only to repeat the process a few pages later. Any advice for sticking to one subject and learning that in-depth? I have tons of programming books I've read half-way through since I'll become interested in other languages/topics (not that I'm not interested in the books I've started). Also, what would be worth focusing on in depth? I've gone into Python in the most depth but for classes I'm learning Java and assembly (ARM and Motorola 68000). Also, I've taken a class on C++. Lately I've been spending most of my time learning about Linux instead of programming though. I'm not sure what would be worth focusing on the most to get a job. In other words, how can you focus on one topic and not let curiosity about everything else get in the way? Thanks in advance, Brian

• Could someone explain why my world reconstructed from depth position is incorrect?

  I am attempting to reconstruct the world position in the fragment shader from a depth texture. I pass in the 8 frustum points in world space and interpolate them across fragments and then interpolate from near to far by the depth: highp float depth = (2.0 * CameraPlanes.x) / (CameraPlanes.y + CameraPlanes.x - texture( depthTexture, textureCoord ).x * (CameraPlanes.y - CameraPlanes.x)); // Reconstruct the world position from the linear depth highp vec3 world = mix( nearWorldPos, farWorldPos, depth ); CameraPlanes.x is the near plane CameraPlanes.y is the far. Assuming that my frustum positions are correct, and my depth looks correct, why is my world position wrong? (My depth texture is of format GL_DEPTH_COMPONENT32F if that matters) Thanks! :D Update: Screenshot of world position http://imgur.com/sSlHd So you can see it looks nearly correct. However as the camera moves, the colours (positions) change, which they shouldnt. I can get this to work, if I do the following: Write this into the depth attachment in the previous pass: gl_FragDepth = gl_FragCoord.z / gl_FragCoord.w / CameraPlanes.y; and then read the depth texture like so: depth = texture( depthTexture, textureCoord ).x However this will kill the hardware z buffer optimizations.

• First ATMs programming language

  First ATMs performed tasks like a cash dispenser, they were offline machines which worked with punch cards impregnated with Carbon and a 6-digit PIN code. Maximum withdrawal with a card was 10 pounds and each one was a one-time use card - ATM swallowed cards! The first ATM was installed in London in the year 1967, as I looked at time line of programming languages, there were many programming languages made before that decade. I don't know about the hardware neither, but in which programming language it was written? *I didn't find a detailed biography of John Shepherd-Barron (ATM inventor at 70s) Update I found this picture, which is taken from a newspaper back to the year 1972 in Iran. Translated PS : Shows Mr. Rad-lon (if spelled correctly), The manager of Barros (if spelled correctly) International Educational Institute in United Kingdom at the right, and Mr. Jim Sutherland - Expert of Computer Kiosks. In the rest of the text I found on this paper, these kind of ATMs which called "Automated Computer Kiosk" were advertised with this: Mr. Rad-lon (if spelled correctly) puts his card to one specific location of Automated Computer Kiosk and after 10 seconds he withdraws his cash. Two more questions are: 1- How those ATMs were so fast? (withdrawal in 10 seconds in that year) 2- I didn't find any text on Internet which state about "Automated Computer Kiosk", Is it valid or were they being called Computer in that time?

• Dedicated server: managed hosting or manage it myself?

  We're currently hosting a number of sites on a self-managed dedicated server. Some companies, however, offer a managed dedicated server hosting service. They offer: Roughly the same server spec Ticketing system support Managed daily backups Virtual firewall (but with a limit of 10 IP addresses allowed through at any one time) Now, this managed hosting is at extra expense - somewhere in the region of $500 per month, and the limit on the number of IP addresses they'll manage on the firewall is also a real pain. My thinking is it would be better and cheaper to Stay with the same host since the dedicated box is fine Get an Amazon AWS account and use their server to manage backups; there are a number of good tools that can be used to automate the process Configure iptables so that I have complete control of the firewall I want to know Is a managed virtual firewall likely to be more secure than me configuring iptables? Whether, in your opinion, it's best to let someone else take care of backups? If, from your experience, there's anything else i'm missing that warrants using managed hosting over a DIY service? I think there is some reluctance to not having managed hosting since a managed host in effect takes responsibility for your server, whereas any hardware or security issues with a server that we manage would mean we are forced to hold our hands up when a client site goes down. That said, I personally don't think a managed host does that much in the day to day running of your server (backups are automatic, OS updates are carried out with ease, etc.).

• Best Usage of Multiple Computers For a Developer

  I have two Macbook Pros - both are comparable in hardware. One is a 17" and the other a 15". The 17" has a slightly swifter CPU clock speed, but beyond that the differences are completely negligible. I tried a setup a while back where I had the 17" hooked up to an external monitor in the middle of my desk with the 15" laptop immediately to the right of it, and was using teleport to control the 15" from my 17". All development, terminal usage, etc. etc. was being done on the 17" and the 15" was primarily used for email / IM / IRC... or anything secondary to what I was working on. I have a MobileMe account so preferences were synced, but otherwise I didn't really use anything else to keep the computers in sync (I use dropbox/git but probably not optimally). For reasons I can't put my finger on, this setup never felt quite right. A few things that irked me was the 15" was way under-utlized and the 17" was overutilized having 2 laptops and a 21" monitor all on one desk actually took up lots of desk space and it felt like I had too much to look at. I reverted back to just using the 17" and the external monitor and keeping the 15" around the house (and using it very sparingly). For those of you who are using multiple laptops (or just multiple machines for that matter), I'd like to see setups that work for you for when you have 2 or more machines that gives you optimal productivity and why. I'd like to give this one more shot but with a different approach than my previous - which was using the 15" as a machine for secondary things (communication, reading documentation, etc. etc).

• Sound card not detected in 13.04

  I have a problem with my sound card. I don't have volume up or down option anywhere. In the setting -> Sound I don't have any card detected.
