    I setup backup of my Windows 8 laptop with Windows 7 File Recovery (known as Backup and Restore in Windows 7). Backup of files runs successfully. But if I try to create system image, it fails with error 0x807800C5: Error details on the dialog: The mounted backup volume is inaccessible. Error details in the system log: There was a failure in preparing the backup image of one of the volumes in the backup set. I save the backup to a network location, WD MyBookLive.   Edit: I tried some of the steps suggested in the various thread about this issue: Cleaned up the backup location: Removed MediaID.bin in the backup location. Removed folder <ComputerName> from WindowsImageBackup. Restarted backup resulted in the same error. However, the error dialog shows slightly different error message: The specified backup disk cannot be found. Performed System File Check by running sfc /scannow. It showed no errors. Running backup failed nevertheless. I tried searching Google for error code but I've found no solution so far. Update: I submitted technical support request to Microsoft. The first suggestion was to clean boot, but it didn't help. I pointed out that I had tried all the methods from the same problem on MS Answers, and nothing had helped.

  • WmiPrvSE memory leak on Windows 2008 *R2*

    I've seen references on Windows 2008 to WmiPrvSE leaks, but nothing about Windows 2008 R2. We're running R2 on top of Hyper-V (2008). We are also running NSClient++ for monitoring from opsview. Over time, WmiPrvSE.exe starts to use a lot of memory, causing memory alert issues (less than 10% free). VM has 2GB, WmiPrvSE consumes up to 500-600MB before I kill it. Killing the process doesn't seem to have any negative effect; it starts up again and I haven't noticed any problems. But after a day or two, it's back in the same situation. Any ideas on what to do? Resource Monitor doesn't show any Disk or Network IO by WmiPrvSE.exe. Just slowly climbing private memory... Edited to add: We aren't running clustering, or Windows System Resource Manager. The only regular WMI user I can guess is NSClient++, but we don't seem to have this problem on other servers.

  • Windows 2008 Terminal Services "Easy Print" and Matrix Printers

    Server: Windows 2008 Server Standard SP2 with "Terminal Services" role Clients: Windows XP SP3 + .NET 3.5 Framework SP1 + Remote Desktop Client 7.0 We are using "Easy Print" feature which allows programs running on server to "see" printers installed on client machines. Everything works fine, EXCEPT when we send a text-only output to a dot-matrix printer. In this case, the printer only outputs a blank page. At first, we had problems with the error "Windows Presentation Foundation Terminal Server Print W has encountered a problem and needs to close." but this was fixed by replacing TsWpfWrp.exe with the one from Vista SP1 as suggested here. But now, we only get a blank page! Every other (graphical) document we sent to printer works 100%. We also tried to use the "Generic text-only" driver, but the result is same. Now we are trying to change parameters like print processor on "advanced" tab from printer driver to see if something happen. But this is just guessing and we really don't know what to try anymore. The problem appears to be on Easy Print driver, but we found almost no resources about it. Any tips are welcome.

    Hi - I have been fighting this issue for a day or two now, so I am looking for some insight. I am taking over admin duties in a domain of 800 users, and the previous admins really did not employ much of any GPO settings for the clients of the Domain. In each site, there is a location on the file server where "Home" folders were manually created. EX: \server\home\enduser Whenever a user got a machine, the admin would manually right-click on the "My Documents" folder and manually enter the path to the home folder. We are planning to start putting Windows 7 machines on the Network, and I am wanting to automate as much as I can, everything that was not done in the past. Since everyone has exising "Home" folders I have been fighting and trying to get Folder Redirection to work with a new Windows 7 machine (In a Test OU). I am getting all kinds of errors and I can't get the Windows 7 "Documents" folder to redirect to the users EXISTING home folders. As I stated earlier, all of the Home folders were (and still are) manually created on the File Server and are set with the following Security permissions - Domain Admins - Full Control euser (end user) - Modify (Everything but Full) Can someone point me in the right direction on the proper setting to put in the Folder Redirection GPO to get this to work with the Existing Home folders. I can't seem to make it work but I will keep trying. Thanks In Advance !

  • Problem running Apache-Tomcat on every web browser installed in Windows 7

    Hello everyone, I'm working on a web application in JSP and my web container is Apache Tomcat 7.0.2 (Its portable cross-platform version). As I've made extensive use of HTML5-CSS3 and my target browser is Google Chrome, I'm able to run the the Apache server only in Opera web browser, neither of the remaining installed browser run it. Here's the steps I have followed to start the server in my Windows 7 machine. -Placing the 'apache-tomcat-7.0.2' directory on my root partition (i.e. C: Drive) -Execute 'startup.bat' from 'bin' directory in it. (startup.sh if on Linux/Unix). -Then, a Console window opens that shows log during the setup of server (separately from Command Prompt), and I need to keep that console running in order to keep the Apache server running, so I minimize it. -Then, I open 'http://localhost:8080/' in various web browsers, and I could see Apache Server Homepage with same address only in Opera Web Browser (11.01), neither of other browsers installed can open it (Chrome 9, Firefox 4 Beta 10 or IE8). -I also tried other port numbers, but none of them worked. What can I do to make Apache run in every browser installed in my computer? I have my computer dual boot with Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.10, and in Ubuntu, every web browser installed can run Apache once I start it, but same is not working in Windows.

    I'm having a shocking time trying to install SQL Server 2008 on 64-bit Windows 7. When I run setup.exe, I get the following error message: Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 installation has failed. SQL Server 2008 Setup requires .NET Framework 3.5 to be installed Things I've tried: I've checked and double checked. I do have .NET Framework 3.5 installed, with SP1 I've read about a missing Windows Installer 4.5 installation producing the same error. Win7 comes with Windows Installer 5, which hopefully satisfies this requirement, as I've tried to install 4.5 and it won't let me Burning the ISO to DVD and installing from there. Installing on an XP machine using the same ISO. This works, so the ISO must be fine. Considering SQL Server 2005, but it really needs to be 2008 for the project. Update Creating a slipstream version gives the same error Update I could install SQL Server Express, and then SP1, but couldn't upgrade to Enterprise. If you've come across this issue, or know how to fix it, I'd love to know.

    I seem to be having a problem with implementing my sysprep. I have been playing with Windows 7, WAIK, Server 2008 R2 and various other things. I managed to create a WIM with everything I need installed and I have worked out the autounattend.xml. I now have a Windows 7 64-bit complete unattended install from a USB device. It has all my programs, setting and everything done except one thing - the default profile set up 100% correctly. I have created a mostly set up default profile. I booted into audit mode, customized the Administrator account (mostly anyway) and then used sysprep with an unattend.xml file containing the copyprofile=true command. The file was set up with the WSIM and does not contain any extra info. This all works wonderfully. I recreated the WIM and all was good. I then decided to move the default location of the visible stuff in the user profile (Documents, Music, Pictures etc.) without changing the location of Appdata or other hidden folders. This is where things went a little... wrong. I went to the user folder (generally has the User name) with all the other folders in it. I right clicked on My Documents, found the location tab and changed it to M:\Documents. Now if I run sysprep /generalize /oobe /reboot /unattend:unattend.xml it starts the generalise... then spits out a fatal error and goes no further.     I’m trying to find a way to get a comprehensive list of user accounts on a Windows 7 system, including hidden ones. The User Accounts dialog (>control userpasswords2) only shows the normal user accounts, and even the Local User and Groups editor only shows normal user accounts and standard hidden/disabled ones like Administrator and Guest. The Select Users or Groups dialog has a Find Now button which which combines users and groups, but alas, it has the same contents as the LUG. I’m looking for a more comprehensive list that includes “super-hidden” / virtual user accounts like TrustedInstaller (or to be more accurate, NT Service\TrustedInstaller—notice the different “domain”). I checked HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\SpecialAccounts\UserList, but the SpecialAccounts key does not exist. I also checked HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList, and while it does have the SystemProfile, LocalService, and NetworkService accounts listed, it does not have others (like TrustedInstaller and its ilk). TrustedInstaller specifically is a little confusing because it is a user, a service, and an executable file. I am using it as an example because it is “super hidden” in that it does not seem to be listed in any sort of user list. (As an experiment, I tried searching the whole registry for “trustedinstaller” to see if I could find a place where it is listed as a user, but found none.) To be clear, what I am looking for is a list of all accounts that can be used in a user input-field such as in permissions dialogs or as a runas argument.

    I have set up a Windows SBS 2003 domain (LAN) and a stand-alone Windows 2008 Server (web server) at another location (workgroup). I established PPTP VPN connection (SBS dials web server) over which users from LAN should be able to access web server. On web server I enabled TCP/IPv4 and File and Printer sharing protocol. It has a few external addresses (one of them is default) AND one local address (192.x.x.x) assigned to network adapter. Firewall allows port 445 for file sharing. There's the problem - I can not enable web server file shares to be visible to LAN users and ONLY to LAN users: From SBS I can access webserver but I cannot access webserver from LAN workstations (XP, Vista). I have had same configuration - I have just replaced old (web server) Windows 2003 server with 2008 so SBS settings are the same (static route, DNS etc.). How can I enable file sharing on web server for LAN workstations? Now I have opened File and printer sharing to the internet which is of course totaly unsecure. I tried to secure the tunnel so I moved RAS (VPN) connection (Network Center) on web server to "Private" profile and moved firewall port 445 to "Private" profile but suddenly file sharing does not work and I cannot telnet webserver on port 445. How can I secure file sharing so I do not have to open it to the internet?

  • Windows 7: Don't combine Taskbar Icons, but only display Icons

    I've never really liked this feature about Win7, but I guess I just got used to it. The feature I don't like is mousing over the win7 icons when there are multiple windows of the same type open. You have to waste that extra time choosing the window after it pops up and it's just clunky. The XP taskbar was nice, because you didn't have to go through any of this, but it had the problem where you ran out of taskbar space fast. I often resized my taskbar to take care of this. However, on Windows 7, I don't use up even 1/3 of my taskbar. I have all this space I can use, and instead it's all squished to the left, making me take extra steps. Are there any applications I can use to get this desired behavior, or else what route would you recommend to take to write this behavior myself? My first thought would be C# and the Windows taskbar apis. PS. If it's not clear what I'm asking for, please let me know, I'll try to be more specific.

    I have a really old installer (legacy app) that we are trying to get running on a Windows 7 64 bit os. Previously it has only been installed on Windows XP 32 bit. I get the following error when I try to run it: The version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you're running. Check your computer's system information to see whether you need an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program, and then contact the software publisher. Contacting the software publisher is not an option (software is super old). Is there a way to get this to work? Some sort of compatibility mode? The only thing I have heard of that will work is a Virtual XP on the Win 7 box. The problem is that this software is a part of a whole software set. I would have to put all of the pieces on the Virtual XP or none at all. Before I go down the road of putting it all on the virtual xp I would like to know that there is no way to get it all on the Win 7 os.

    Hello friends I run a Windows 2008 server with SP2. This server acts as a desktop alone. Recently, I switched between two networks (corporate and other) using this system. Ever since, I am unable to access any network share on the original network from where I installed and configured the desktop. The message I get is "Network path was not found". Note that I am able to access the internet and my corporate mail server. I am told this is a Vista and Windows 2008 specific problem and I have done everything I could think of: a) Deleted the second network settings from the desktop b) Installed a patch from MS that supposed took care of this problem (with MS clearly saying they had not tested this enough) c) The SP2 install was after the problem occurred and I went ahead with it in the hope that SP2 may have something that would fix this Some additional details: a) A system admin can log into this system from a remote terminal b) I cannot get into my own system using the hidden share C$ - for instance \mymachine\C$ gives me the same message as above - Network path not found c) I can log into my system remotely using mstsc d) I cannot create shares on this system - as an extension network printers are not detected I have an update for you: The error message is as follows - **Network Error** Windows cannot access \\network_share Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise there might a problem with your network. To try to identify and resolve network problems, click Diagnose. Clicking Diagnose gives Error Code: 0x80070035 The network path was not found.   • Preventing Windows version of Vim from destroying other file systems permissions

    I am currently using the windows version of gVim to edit source files on a networked drive mapped to a linux system, as well as local files created in cygwin. The problem is that the windows version of gVim destroys the original file permissions on the respective systems. IE: Files on cygwin are defaulted to 077. When edited by the windows version of vim they are saved as 777.This problem doesn't even occur when using ms-notepad (as well as all other editors I've tried), so I am not quite sure why gVim does it. A possible solution would be to use cygwin's gVim for everything, but that's rather cumbersome as it requires running an x11 environment to support it, and it causes some problems when running some commands from within gVim (or vim for that matter) when working on the networked drive. Any ideas how I might be able to maintain the existing file permissions? Edit: This morning while on a different machine the problem with cygwin did not occur. Cygwin & gVim were the same version, however the other machine is running WinXP while the machine the problem is occurring on runs Win7.

  • How to restore infrared support in Windows XP?

    My infrared port is not working on my Windows XP SP 3 (Thinkpad X60). I can see it Device Manager, and it's status is, that it is working probably. The problem manifests in several ways. Originally I was trying to transfer data from my Polar RS800CX watch, and the Polar ProTrainer 5 software gave me the this error message: "Communication port couldn't be opened". Then I tried to connect the watch to another computer, and the infrared connection was established immediately. I then tried to connect the other computer to my Thinkpad X60. The other computer again immediately showed the Wireless Link icon "'computername' is in range" in the notification area. But nothing is shown on the Thinkpad, and a file transfer to the Thinkpad is unsuccessful with an error message that reports that "the target machine actively refused it [the connection]". This brings me to conclude that the infrared support in Windows on the Thinkpad is somehow broken. This is further supported by the fact that I can't find the "Wireless Link" icon in the Control Panel and when I try to run the irprops.cpl nothing happens. So the question is, how to reinstall the infrared support? Some of the solutions that I have explored is: I have tried to disable/enable the infrared in the BIOS - to trick a re-installation. The IR modules settings on the other computer that can get a successful IR connection is an exact match to the ThinkPad that can't get a connection. The was a problem in Windows XP SP 2 with the Wireless Link icon - MS KB article - but that hotfix can't be applied on SP 3 installation. I also guess that the hotfix is included in SP 3. Any other suggestions?

    I configured FTP Service/Role on my Windows Server 2008 R2 machine. I am able to connect from the inside, but not from the outside. On the inside I tested using cmd prompt and IE FTP. On the outside, I am testing with FileZilla and IE FTP. From the outside, IE FTP prompts me to enter my username/pwd, but nothing happens. Page eventually times out and I get "Internet Explorer cannot display page". Using FileZilla, I get the following messages. Note FileZilla resolved domain name and authenticates. I did not configure FTP Wirewall Support on the FTP site. I am not sure if I need to do this. I set up basic authentication, non-ssl, not allowing anonymous. I testing with Windows Firewall Turned off and on (I added windows firewall rule for port 21). On my network firewall (Cisco), I added a rule to forward port 21 traffic to FTP Server.   • Oracle with Kerberos authentication and Windows 2003 Server as KDC

    I am running Oracle 10.2 on a Windows 2003 Server SP2 which is also the domain controller on the network. I wish to switch authentication method from NTS to Kerberos. I have spent a lot of time trying to configure Oracle with Kerberos authentication from the Oracle Advanced Security option from the Net Manager utility. I have disabled NTS so Kerberos is promoted as the preferred authentication method. But as soon as the configuration is saved from Net Manager and I restart the Oracle server service, Oracle will not start. I don't know what Oracle is complaining about, because I don't know where to look for the Oracle error log. My first question is: how can I figure out what's bugging Oracle? My second question: is there a good tutorial for setting up Oracle on a Windows 2003 with Kerberos Authentication, where the Windows 2003 Server is the KDC? Maybe there is a book I can get? I have read Oracles own guide, but it is mostly for Linux/Unix. Thanks a lot!

  • Bacula v5.0.2 Windows Installation Issues

    First off, I am very new to Bacula but I'm very intriqued from what I've read. I'm looking to set up Bacula 5.0.2 on a Windows 2008 R2 server. I've run the installer and at the end it asks me to configure DIR name, DIR password, DIR Address. Windows documentation is somewhat hard to come by and I'm not certain what exactly I'm supposed to enter here. Do I need to create a local account that matches this info? Will the installation process create the account for me? Will this be the account that handles the FD daemon/service? I'm also not certain if Address means network location or local direcory. I apologize for my ignorance. Currently I'm trying to use the following information: Name: john pass: john address: thin1 (server name although I have also tried thin1.fqdm.local and 10.0.0.104) This info allows for the installer to complete successfully. However, when I run the BAT it hangs at, "Connecting to Director thin1:9101". The Bacula File Service is currently running under the local system account. What am I doing wrong? What do I have yet to do? Once I get this working properly I assume I will need to install clients on all my Windows boxes? Also, this is a 64-bit cpu but I am installing the 32-bit client. Are there any issues with this? Should I be using the 32-bit client? Thanks very much for the help.

  • Windows 7, network connection with no default gateway: any way to change the "Unknown network" statu

    Hi, I have a computer running Windows 7 Pro RTM. This computer has two network connections: A Wi-fi connection to the Internet (through a home router) which works just fine. An OpenVPN virtual network connection. More precisely, this is a virtual Ethernet connection which behaves exactly like a physical Ethernet wired connection. My problem is that the "Network and sharing center" shows "Unknown network" for the OpenVPN connection. After some research I found that logical networks (outside a domain) are identified by the MAC address of the default gateway of the connection. Problem is, the OpenVPN connection has no default gateway: it is a private network, so I don't need one... Consequently, the "Unknown network" is always considered public, so the firewall is always in "public mode", which I don't want. Plus, I can't rename "Unknown connection" or anything (which makes sense), so it is kinda ugly. My goal is to define a proper logical network for the OpenVPN connection with the private profile. I know of some workarounds (disable the firewall, modify security policy to make all unknown networks "private") but they're still workarounds. I just want my clients to connect to the VPN without having to disable their firewall settings, without changing global configuration with potential side-effects (the "security policy" solution) and without having to look at an ugly "Unknown connection" in the Network and sharing center. Is there any way I can do this? I tried to check what was going on in the registry (HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\NetworkList is interesting), but I still didn't find a way to "force" the OpenVPN connection to be assigned to a logical network.   • Public DNS redirect subdomain to Windows Server 2003 DNS

    I'm a programmer by trade but often dabble in sysadmin tasks and responsibilities. I have recently been tasked with setting up a Windows Server 2003 networking environment for a small business with multiple branches. The business already has a domain name they use to host a website at www.example.com. Currently the DNS nameservers are at Zerigo and I would very much like it to remain that way (as they specialize in just providing DNS services and they do this very well). We also have a bunch of other subdomains we use to conviniently connect to the various branches that have static IPs assigned from ISPs, so we're able to connect easily to branch1.example.com. Is it possible to 'redirect' all intranet.example.com DNS requests to a Windows box? I've been doing a little reading and I see there are NS records that might be able to do this, and the Windows DNS server could then perform all of the lookups for that subdomain, say, server1.intranet.example.com or client5.intranet.example.com. This would seem better to me, than registering a new domain name for the organisation, as keeping a single domain name makes more organizational sense.

  • Windows 7 Apache Crashes on ANY request

    I have XAMPP installed. I am running Windows 7. I have WordPress installed so that I may tweak it and test things locally before putting them 'live' on a remote server. I just installed BuddyPress. The installation was rather seamless. I activated the plugin and almost immediately, Apache crashed. I have Apache running as a service so it immediately restarted itself and was running BUT if I even so much as refresh the page (or create any other request), down it goes.   • 4.00gb (3.25gb usable) in Windows 7 x64

    Hi, I have setup Windows 7 Ultimate x64 on my PC. I have 4gb RAM and my BIOS states the correct amount (4096mb), but I cannot Windows (System Manager) says I have 4.00gb (3.25gb usable). This seems to be a popular issue, and I have looked for an integrated video card (integrated with my chipset) to disable but haven't found anything. What else can be preventing me from seeing all 4gb? When I had Vista 32bit, it would say 3.25gb RAM not 4.00gb (3.25gb usable). I have an x64 CPU and when I brought my RAM, I used a compatibility tool from Crucial (the memory vendor) to test how much memory my PC can support and 4gb was the answer (this was a windows app I think). Chipset is Intel(R) G33/G31/P35/P31 Express Chipset PCI Express In the bios, I looked for an onboard video card (integrated) and there was no such thing, but a couple of other onboard devices. There are also no "Resource Mappings" settings. FURHTER DETAILS: Chipset North Bridge: Intel Bearlake G33 South Bridge: Intel 82801IR ICH9R Maximum Memory Amount 8 GB Graphics Controller Type Intel GMA 3100 (Enabled) I guess the first thing is, how do I disable the graphics controller? EDIT: This thread (http://forums.legitreviews.com/about23417.html) indicates the issue is with memory mapped devices, but someone on this thread says that does not apply to x64. The rest of the comments points to a mobo issue for the guy who started that thread. Thanks
