  Skipping the question of whether this is bad design (and the question of why I would want/need to do this), I'm just wondering if my 'math' is right... I have n things that need to be put in order (n is always less than 5): thing1 thing2 thing3 ... and I'd like to store these results in a single integer for thing. My initial thought is that (obviously the code will not look like this): thing = thing1 * 1 + thing2 * 2 + thing3 * 4 + thing5 * 8 will always give me a unique value, and that any value for thing will always translate back to its values for thing1...thingn. Is this correct?

• Assigning data to an <li> element?

  Hi, I am generating some list items as a result of a search, and I want to attach some data to each list element from the search (possibly a bad idea to merge ui and data), but now curious about it. I am doing this: var element = $("<li>Hello</li>); element.mydata = "foo"; element.appendTo("#panelParent"); so I'm just assigning my stuff to element.mydata. My click handler reports that no such data exists for the element when clicked: $('#panelParent').delegate('li', 'click', function() { // this.mydata is undefined. }); where did it go to? I could keep the data external to the a list item element, was wondering if there's a convenient way like this to just keep it bound though? Thanks

• Scaling a ruby script by launching multiple processes instead of using threads.

  I want to increase the throughput of a script which does net I/O (a scraper). Instead of making it multithreaded in ruby (I use the default 1.9.1 interpreter), I want to launch multiple processes. So, is there a system for doing this to where I can track when one finishes to re-launch it again so that I have X number running at any time. ALso some will run with different command args. I was thinking of writing a bash script but it sounds like a potentially bad idea if there already exists a method for doing something like this on linux.

  I am trying to copy from a file X to this name C:\RIP2\France Clidat\Les Plus Belles Oeuvres - France Clidat\(01)3_ Un Sospiro.flac I have checked that there is no bad characters, If I force directorires it creates C:\RIP2\France Clidat\Les Plus Belles Oeuvres - France Clidat but it refuses to write the file and I do not understand why a simple test procedure foo(str: string); var f:File; begin Assign(f,str); Rewrite(f); CloseFile(f); end; will crash saying it is not a valid file name but it is! If I remove ALL blank spaces it works I am lost please Help

• convert flv to mp3 with Java

  Hi, I'm pretty new in developing programs in Java. I'm currently writing a program that converts a flv video into mp3. I have already written such a program in Visual Studio.net C#, but the Problem is, that it isn't cross platform compatible... I used the ffmpeg binary to convert the video into mp3, but I can't find ffmpeg binaries for Mac and Linux. (if so, I could start the specific binaries from java, depending on the OS) So I tried to convert the video with Xuggle, but the final mp3 has 0 bytes. • What's a very easy C++ profiler (VC++)?

  I've used a few profilers in the past and never found them particularly easy. Maybe I picked bad ones, maybe I didn't really know what I was expecting! But I'd like to know if there are any 'standard' profilers which simply drop in and work? I don't believe I need massively fine-detailed reports, just to pick up major black-spots. Ease of use is more important to me at this point. It's VC++ 2008 we're using (I run standard edition personally). I don't suppose there are any tools in the IDE for this, I can't see any from looking at the main menus?

• How to set up a different context to point to an external directory outside webapps Tomcat/Java

  Hi Folks, I am successful to map an external directory by creating an xml file like : <Context path="/uploads" docBase="C:\uploads\photos" crossContext="true"/> And I named this xml file as uploads.xml and saved under "#Tomcat\conf\Catalina\localhost" here # = Directory where Tomcat has been installed. And when I start Tomcat(5) from cammand line (batch file) i.e. startup.bat The images can be accessed normally like "http://localhost:8080/uploads/user1.png" It works. Actually I am using IntelliJ Idea 8 for devevelopment. When I start Tomcat from IntelliJ Idea, I am not able to access the context i.e. the images. "http://localhost:8080/uploads/user1.png" It shows "HTTP 400 Bad Request" The context path for my project is "http://localhost:8080/spark/" Any help or suggestion is needed at the earliest time.   I'd like to change {foo, {bar}, foobar} to {foo, bar, foobar} in all rows that match '{.*{'. I.e. remove all curly braces { and } except the outer most pair. So doing mysql -h $H -u $U -p$P $DB -B -e "SELECT id FROM t WHERE col REGEXP '{.*{'" > bad.txt selects all the rows that will need this substitution. How do I make this substitution very quickly? • Is there a point creating a site using XSLT

  Is this technology still popular? I want to make a website which automatically transforms XSLT files. It should work like this: When a user accesses the site, a single handler would accept his request and then find a suitable XML for it (according to the URL requested) and transform it using its attached XSL file. I want to do this in order to make it easy to update the site using plain XML files (instead of using a full-fledged & expensive CMS system). • Safe ASCII char to replace whitespace before storing

  My code passes a big bunch of text data to a legacy lib, which is responsible for storing it. However, it tends to remove trailing whitespace. This is a problem when I read the data back. Since I cannot change the legacy code, I thought about replacing the all spaces with some uncommon ASCII character. When I read back the text, I can replace them back. Is this a bad idea, considering that I cannot touch the legacy storage code? Which character can I use as a substitute? I was considering some char upwards of 180. There will only be spaces - no tabs or newlines - in the data. The data is alphanumeric, with special characters.

  The original question is related to overloading operator= and I like to share my findings as it was nontrivial for me to find them. I cannot imagine reasonable example to use (a=b) as lvalue. (a=b)=c f(T& ); f(a=b) but both a bit not good, as first violate associativity and I believe that it is bad practice. The second one give me the same feeling. Could you provide more good examples why it should be non constant?

I created a new Thread (because GUI dont response) for the calculation of the pixels and the colors. In this Thread(Mehtod) I´m using the Dispatcher to Refresh my Image in the ViewBox after the calculations are ready. When I´m dont put the calculation in a seperate Thread then I can refresh or build my Image. PS: Sry for my bad english

• C++ corrupt my thinking, how to trust auto garbage collector?

  I use to program mainly with C/C++, that's make me dealing with pointers and memory management daily. This days I'm trying to develop using other tools, such as Java, Python and Ruby. The problem is that I keep thinking C++ style, I'm writing code as C++ usually written in almost every programming language, and the biggest problem is the memory management, I keep writing bad code using references in Java and just get as close as I can to the C++ style. So I need 2 thinks here, one is to trust the garbage collector, let's say by seeing benchmarks and proofs that it's realy working in Java, and know what I should never do in order to get my code the best way it can be. And the second think is knowing how to write other languages code. I mean I know what to do, I'm just never write the code as most Java or Python programmers usually do, are there any books for C++ programmers just to introduce me to the writing conventions? (by the way, forgive me for my English mistakes)

  Does log4J still gather the class, method and line numbers by generating exceptions and inspecting the stack trace? Or has Java been optimized since Sun included their own logging framework. If not, why has there not been any optimizations made since. What is the main challenges in obtaining class, method and line numbers quickly and efficiently? Although I hate annotations and try to avoid them, has log4J not made use of this, such as: @log4j-class MyClass @log4j-method currentMethodOne At least this would avoid some companies bad habit of repeatedly writing/copying the method name as the first part of their logging message (which is seriously annoying).   my question is what potential problems or difficulties would be with implementing usual web app with somewhat reach user interface (multiple dynamic tabs, accordians and so on) using jQuery MVC approach with Spring REST vs using Spring MVC. Problems what I can think of could be: I will not be able to use Spring security fully, JavaScript coding could become hard to manage, any form verification becomes not easy to manage... what else? and does jQuery MVC with REST make sense at all? On other side jQuery with MVC and REST move all GUI concerns to JavaScript side (whether it is bad or not) and leave all data manipulation to server side.

  I always assumed that Unicode string handling was some dark art. However, I've seen that the Windows API has functions for comparing Unicode strings, for example. Does that mean that it's actually feasible to write a Unicode string class that can perform simple actions like sorting, equality comparison, and extraction from a file? Or are there hidden gotchas in the use of these functions that makes it actually a really bad idea? I'm just looking at libraries like ICU and they seem incredibly over-complicated compared to what a Unicode string class backed by the Windows API could actually look like, which would resemble the Standard string classes quite closely.

  Hi, how come that when I attach onchange by attribute and call it onchange="validateDate(FPR_CURR_FROM);" it works, but when I use a ASP .NET validator, and my attached function is called like : function anonymous() { ValidatorOnChange(event); validateDate(FPR_CURR_FROM); } I get error: FPR_CURR_FROM is undefined. First off: I know that using FPR_CURR_FROM to access element is BAD, and I should use getElementByID etc... And I will change it eventually. But as I bumped into that code, I'm curious what caused it - propably visibility of variables I guess.

  Hello. I have a TileList which represents some remote data. I also have a form which allows me to change the data. And the data may be changed by someone else too. What is the best way to maintain data in the list in an up-to-date state? The simplest option I see is the following: Select an item in the list Edit it in the form Save it. The form submits the data to the server When the server reports success the list re-fetches it's data The very bad thing about this workflow is that the list loses selection (a tree would also loose the nodes' expanded/collapsed state). I would really love to find out another option which would enable the list to maintain it's selection state. Any guesses on how it may be done?

• Accessing hard-coded data in a C# application.

  I'm trying to avaid hardcoding in a .net 2.0 soon to be 3.5 application. I have a large enumneration which I wish to map 1 to 1 to a set of strings. Each enumerated value will also map to 1 of 2 values indicating an action. The existing code does this with a big switch statement but this seems ugly to me. Is there a better way of storing and accessing the data? I've thought about resx files but when you consider that the designer file contains just as many hardcoded values it seems a little pointless. Is embedding an xml file in the assembly a good idea? Is a big switch statement not as bad as it seems? Is there a better solution?
