  • CLR via C# - first post of many!

    - by TATWORTH
I am currently reading CLR via C# ISBN 978-0-7356-2704-8. Whilst quite correctly described by the publisher as a "Deep Dive", this is a book that C# developers with 6-18 months plus experiance ought to read. Certainly any serious Microsoft programming shop ought to have a copy.  For our VB.NET bretheren, a book of this quality is a good excuse to learn C#. (And before you ask, my favourite language of C# and VB.NET is the one that gets me the next contract!) When I started programming 31 years ago I went through IBM 360 Orientation - this gave me an comprehension of what worked best at the machine code level - this is the first book I have found that explains the the working of the Dot Net framework to explain why particular choices are good, This is my first blog post here. In the coming weeks, I intend to: Carry on with my review of CLR via C# and bring out practical points from that work. Post details of useful utilities Post some "Tales from the coal face.."

  • Does google use chrome to check if a link is used by humans or just there for the bots?

    - by sam
Does clicking a link in chrome tell google the link is used by humans and there fore not just automated backlink spam. It sounds weird but i read it today on a slightly obscure seo blog, they mensionned clicking the backlinks they make in a version of chrome where they have the "send data annonmusly to google" feature turned on. It sounded a bit far fetched but then i thought it could have a truth to it as with google now looking harder at "spammy" links it would mean at least some humans are using them. Has any one else heard anything else about this ?

  • Couldn't Make It to Oracle OpenWorld? Fear Not! Upcoming: Using the Oracle E-Business Suite SDK for Java in ADF Applications Webcast

    - by Juan Camilo Ruiz
For those of you who didn't make it at Oracle OpenWorld, we have good news. The ADF and E-Business Suite teams are well aware that various ADF and Oracle E-Business Suite customers are looking for guidance on how to work with the Oracle E-Business Suite SDK for Java in ADF applications: its capabilities, limitations, etc. As some of you might know, Sara Woodhull from the Applications Technology Group (ATG) in Oracle E-Business Suite and I delivered a session on the topic at Oracle OpenWorld last week. The good news is that we are already planning to deliver this session again as a webcast, tentatively scheduled for Nov. 2, 2012.  Stay tuned to this and the Oracle E-Business Suite Technology Stack blog for upcoming information about the webcast.

  • Very few visitors on Analytics: incorrect setting?

    - by Akaban
it's quite a long time Analytics is making me crazy: I have a 2 years old website, started with Aruba (an Italian provider) and then transfered on Hostgator. It's a blog Wordpress + MyBB forum, and on both the platforms I've the Analytics code in the footer. The problem is that the stats on Analytics are simply ridiculous compared to the numbers reported by the Aruba (before) and Hostgator (then). I think that the numbers of Aruba/Hostgator are correct, simply because just the daily users connected on the forum is higher than the Analytics numbers. I know it's a really confused request, but maybe you can help me to understand what's the problem.

I tried to find the reason but i didn't find any value answer. May anyone answer this question. Please let me know if you had already experienced like this.

  • How can I store post rankings that change with time?

    - by Daniel Fein
I'm trying to learn how to code a website algorithm like Reddit.com where there are thousands of posts that need to be ranked. Their ranking algorithm works like this (you don't have to read it, its more of a general question that I have): http://amix.dk/blog/post/19588 Right now I have posts stored in a database, I record their dates and they each have an upvotes and downvotes field so I'm storing their records. I want to figure out how do you store their rankings? When specific posts have ranking values, but they change with time, how could you store their rankings? If they aren't stored, do you rank every post every time a user loads the page? When would you store the posts? Do you run a cron job to automatically give every post a new value every x minutes? Do you store their value? Which is temporary. Maybe, until that post reaches its minimum score and is forgotten?

  • When will my old page stop appearing on Google?

    - by Bane
I recently bought a new address for my Blogger blog, from yannbane.blogspot.com to www.yannbane.com. However, www.yannbane.com addresses do not appear when they are searched for! Is this natural? How much time will it take for Google to update its index? yannbane.blogspot.com 301's to www.yannbane.com. Both are added to my Webmaster Tools account, but it shows no data for www.yannbane.com (strangely). And, finally, is there something I could do to speed up the process?

  • constructor should not call methods

    - by Stefano Borini
I described to a colleague why a constructor calling a method is an antipattern. example (in my rusty C++) class C { public : C(int foo); void setFoo(int foo); private: int foo; } C::C(int foo) { setFoo(foo); } void C::setFoo(int foo) { this->foo = foo } I would like to motivate better this fact through your additional contribute. If you have examples, book references, blog pages, or names of principles, they would be very welcome. Edit: I'm talking in general, but we are coding in python.

  • Great Java EE Concurrency Write-up!

    - by reza_rahman
As you are aware JSR-236, Concurrency Utilities for the Java EE platform, is now a candidate for addition into Java EE 7. While it is a critical enabling API it is not necessarily obvious why it is so important. This is especially true with existing features like EJB 3 @Asynchronous, Servlet 3 async and JAX-RS 2 async. On his blog DZone MVB Sander Mak does an excellent job of explaining the motivation and importance of JSR-236. Perhaps even more importantly, he discusses potential issues with the API such alignment with CDI and Java SE Fork/Join. Read the excellent write-up here!

Now i'm planning to go with some pay per impression programs. So far i came to know that google adsense won't allow using traffic exchange programs. Did all pay-per-impression programs will follow the same ? will i get banned using traffic exchange programs? Please reply me your suggestions, Thanks in advance. Sorry for my bad English.

  • How can I secretly ban someone (hellban) in phpbb?

    - by Dan Fabulich
The trolls are driving me crazy; I'd like to experiment with a secret ban. http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/2011/06/suspension-ban-or-hellban.html A hellbanned user is invisible to all other users, but crucially, not himself. From their perspective, they are participating normally in the community but nobody ever responds to them. They can no longer disrupt the community because they are effectively a ghost. It's a clever way of enforcing the "don't feed the troll" rule in the community. When nothing they post ever gets a response, a hellbanned user is likely to get bored or frustrated and leave. It looks like there's no way to do this out-of-the-box with phpbb. Is there a way to hack it in?

  • What are the so-called "levels" of understanding multithreading?

    - by Dan Tao
I seem to remember reading somewhere some list of 4 "levels" of understanding multithreading. This may have been in a formal publication, or it may have been in an extremely informal context (even like in a Stack Overflow question, for example). Unfortunately I don't remember who referred to them or precisely what they were. I seem to recall that they were roughly like: Total ignorance Awareness mixed with incompetence Relative competence mixed with fear True understanding My intention is to refer to these levels in a blog post I'm writing, with a reference; but I can't for the life of me remember where I first encountered this list. Brief Google searches have proved unfruitful.

  • Sending JSON to an ASP.NET MVC Action Method Argument

Javier G Money Lozano, one of the good folks involved with C4MVC, recently wrote a blog post on posting JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) encoded data to an MVC controller action. In his post, he describes an interesting approach of using a custom model binder to bind sent JSON data to an argument of an action method. Unfortunately, his sample left out the custom model binder and only demonstrates how to retrieve JSON data sent from a controller action, not how to send the JSON to the action method....Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors?
