• AppFabric &ndash; where are all the monitoring events?

  When you’ve just gone through a setup of AppFabric and you’ve got some WF/WCF things happening, if you start looking at the Dashboard and you see nothing, it might be as simple as restarting SQL Agent. I generally don’t reboot my system for several days and after installing AppFabric the SQL Agent jobs didn’t start firing right away.  Yes, even running a boot to VHD, you can still put the machine to sleep (just logoff and click on Sleep)… So, after spending time looking through the SQL monitoring DB that AppFabric was configured to use, I saw a bunch of records in the [AppFabric_Monitoring].[dbo].[ASStagingTable] table.  This table is the stopping point before the SQL Agent job (or Service Broker in SQL Express) pushes the items to their final resting place.   I am looking for a (best open-source or free but also commercially available) CMS platform that is built similarly to bulletin boards (for example phpBB) but instead of text posts, registered users can upload files that can be rated, commented etc.) I am aware of the number of board CMSes that have file-database plugins, but that is not what I want. I want to have a system that focuses on the files rather than on the postings. Or do you have any alternative ideas on solutions to the problem? • Wordpress asks for FTP credentials, even though owner of the whole /var/www is www-data

  I'm trying to get Wordpress to run on my local Ubuntu 12.10 installation. When I try to install themes/plugins, it asks me for FTP credentials. I've been trying to get this to work for 2 days now. Everywhere on the web it says you should change the owner:group of your Wordpress directory to whateverowner:group runs your apache server - in my case www-data:www-data. I've done this, and even tryed setting permissions to the whole /var/www directory to 777, restarting apache and the whole system. But wordpress is still asking me for the FTP credentials. What else could this be?

Not exactly same, has a few more features to it too but I can't really get my head around the whole freelancer.com site. I have built a social networking site from scratch which is 70% of Facebook and 20% Google+ in about 5 months with raw PHP, JS, CSS and Ajax. I dont think it will take me more than a month or something to build the whole freelancer.com from scratch. Please suggest anything that should I pay attention to. I am thinking about: 2 php developers 1 mysql engineer 1 network/server engineer 1 graphics artist 1 UI developer Time frame: 20 days Is this a good estimation?

• How important is a single-player mode in a 2-player game?

  So say you have a 2 player game, taking Chess as an example (except it's an original game with no ready-to-go AI available). Let's say there's also a social-aspect to the meta-game, so let's say it's a Chess game on Facebook where you can challenge your friends. How important is it to have a single-player mode, knowing that an AI will need to be created (I've done minimax AI for tic tac toe, but nothing too sophisticated)? Is it important enough that it should be in the initial launch of the game? Can it wait for a future iteration (knowing that being hosted on the web means the game can be updated at any time)?

• How to download streaming video from a flash player (arte)?

  there are a couple of concerts that I would very much like to view from Arte (I think it's a french TV channel?) but my connection is not good enough to stream the video. How can I download the file to play it locally? Here is an example link: http://www.my-jazzlive.tv/?p=1862 I have tried popular browser plugins such as DownloadHelper and Flash Video Downloader, these are working fine for me on sites such as youtube but they don't seem to recognise any stream from the Arte video player. I also looked through /tmp for something that looks like a partially downloaded video, but no luck.

  I am using Joomla and want to implement a subscription based ecommerce solution. I started using VirtueMart and noticed its shortcomings regarding subscription based recurring items. Turns out Virtuemart can take its own plugins and I found something called SimSu which I don't want to pay for. I feel like I have taken a nuke to a knife fight, as I only need one or two subscription based products on this site. They will be recurring payments. • Where to draw the line between front end and back end

  I was recently contracted to develop a smarty theme for an automated SOHO phone answering service. The team who had built the backend wouldn't allow me access to any of the back end nor tell me anything about it, their smarty set up, smarty plugins, data base interface api, server set-up, nothing. Nor could I have access to the server nor a beta domain, basically zero co-operation. So I set up a local server with Smarty and built the template based on what I guessed would be their best practice, commented my code like crazy, wrote all the needed javascript, css, and template files. Then I sent them packaged to the backend team and hoped for the best. With half of a project team failing to cooperate or even communicate I am now concerned that they may reply saying that everything is wrong and they may refuse to implement the new front end. I'm curious to know if others encounter this type of situation and what you may have done to protect yourselves.

My robots.txt currently looks like this (copied from somewhere a long time ago): User-agent: * Disallow: /cgi-bin Disallow: /wp-admin Disallow: /wp-includes Disallow: /wp-content/plugins Disallow: /wp-content/cache Disallow: /wp-content/themes Disallow: /trackback Disallow: /comments Disallow: /category/*/* Disallow: */trackback Disallow: */comments I want my comments to be indext. So I can remove this, right? Do I want to disallow indexing categories because of my permalinkstructure? An article can have several tags and be in multiple categories. This may cause duplicates in google. How should I work around this? Would you change anything else here?

  I have an existing Joomla 1.5 site and am intending to wipe it and install a brand new 2.5 site. I will pick new plugins, template etc but would like to transfer the basic text / images of the articles on the 1.5 site to the new site. I am less concerned with categories and tags of those old articles, as they'll probably go in an 'old' category. I have several file and database backups of the 1.5 site. Has anyone done anything similar ? Are the two article db schemas similar enough to just transfer the data ?

• Mail Hosting That Will Allow Outbound Bulk Mail?

  No, I'm not a spammer! I do volunteer work for a non-profit social services agency. They send out daily email with several hundred recipients on each message. Their web hosting company has been flagging the email as spam due to the volume. So I'm looking for an email hosting provider that won't do that. (I can separate out the web hosting function; we just need mail hosting right now.) They can't use something like MailChimp, Constant Contact, or Vertical Response because some of the mail is just inbound emails they aggregate and send out, and they don't want the overhead of "rebuilding" it in a "newsletter" service. I think that Google Apps for Business might be a good solution, but the pricing is just too high for this under-funded non-profit. I've applied for the non-profit discount but haven't heard back yet. Is there mail hosting service that might fit their needs? Thanks in advance.
