• Maintainability of Boolean logic - Is nesting if statements needed?

  Which of these is better for maintainability? if (byteArrayVariable != null) if (byteArrayVariable .Length != 0) //Do something with byteArrayVariable OR if ((byteArrayVariable != null) && (byteArrayVariable.Length != 0)) //Do something with byteArrayVariable I prefer reading and writing the second, but I recall reading in code complete that doing things like that is bad for maintainability. This is because you are relying on the language to not evaluate the second part of the if if the first part is false and not all languages do that. (The second part will throw an exception if evaluated with a null byteArrayVariable.) I don't know if that is really something to worry about or not, and I would like general feedback on the question. Thanks.

• New Paper on the PeopleSoft Interaction Hub-PeopleTools Relationship

  A new paper has just been published that explains the relationships and dependencies between the PeopleSoft Interaction Hub (formerly the PeopleSoft Applications Portal), and PeopleTools.  This paper will help you understand which versions of the Hub work with which versions of Tools.  The paper contains information on how new customers can install the PeopleSoft Interaction Hub, and existing PeopleSoft Interaction Hub customers can apply PIH 9.1 Feature Pack 1 functionality if they are on an earlier version. It also describes how PeopleSoft Interaction Hub releases are aligned with PeopleTools releases, the general upgrade process within the Feature Pack model, and how customers can expect this to work with subsequent feature packs, maintenance packs, and bundles. • What constitutes proper use of threads in programming?

  I am tired of hearing people recommend that you should use only one thread per process, while many programs use up to 100 per process! take for example some common programs vb.net ide uses about 25 thread when not debugging System uses about 100 chrome uses about 19 Avira uses more than about 50 Any time I post a thread related question, I am reminded almost every time that I should not use more that one thread per process, and all the programs I mention above are ruining on my system with a single processor. • Is it common to purchase an insurance policy for contract development work?

  I am not sure if this is the best place for the question, but I am not sure where else to ask. Background I am a contract developer and have just been asked to provide a general liability policy for my next gig. In 6-7 years this has never been asked of me. Question Is this common? If so, can anyone recommend a good underwriter that focuses on what we do as contract software developers? I realize that Google could help me find underwriters but it won't give me unbiased public opinion about which companies actually understand what we do and factor that into the price of the policy.   I'm currently a senior research software engineer at a large company and am being offered a "senior staff engineer" position somewhere else. I am not sure if the new position's title conveys a sideways move or an advancement. So, all other things being roughly equal (salary, domain of expertise, etc.), what is the external difference between these software engineer titles (in general and regardless of any particular company, if possible): senior engineer senior research engineer senior staff engineer member of technical staff principal engineer Edit: Let me elaborate on "member of technical staff" since it's kind of uncommon. I think it's a high title, commonly associated with research. I know that Oracle, VMWare, and the old Bell Labs have these titles. See: Member of Technical Staff . I know what it means, but I don't know how it stacks up against the other titles, which is why I asked.

• How can I assign actions to all my mouse buttons?

  I have a mouse with lots of buttons, but it's not a mainstream make like Logitech. For Windows, I have a driver that lets me assign actions like close-window (Ctrl+W) or next-tab (Ctrl+Tab), but I don't have a Linux driver. Since Linux is so flexible, I thought perhaps there is a general way to do this, regardless of brand? Update: Based on input from Cyrex, I installed and ran sudo apt-get install btnx which found several but not all mouse buttons. Found: left, right, wheel, wheelclick, thumb fwd, thumb back. Not found: wheel left, wheel right, thumb middle button. Vendor ID is 0x04d9, Model ID is 0xa015.

• Target tracking with a small delay (actionscript 3.0)

  I'm having trouble thinking of a good method to track my character with an enemy attack. Of course, I don't want the attack to track my character's current position; I want it to track where the character was about 1 second before (so you can move around and make the attack miss and loop around you sort of a thing). The general structure of my game uses a timer to update all of my events. I have a timer going off every 25 milliseconds that updates everything, including my player's position and the enemies position. Right now I just have the enemy attack directly targeting my character....which works fine except that it's impossible to escape =p. Let me know if I didn't supply enough details. My approach was going to basically be get my character's position from about 1 second ago, then have the enemy target that position, the only problem is I can't think of a good way to get my character's position from previous times. • How to debug KMail Search after upgrade

  I added KDE backported packages recently to gain access to a more stable version of KDevelop. However, now, Kontact/Kmail's search doesn't work anymore. Where do I start to find out what's wrong? The problem manifests itself that when in the Inbox folder, I type something in the search bar, no Emails will be shown. (Yes, searching for something where the email is definitely there.) Kubuntu 12.04 LTS. Kontact version 4.13. What I tried. akonadiconsole as suggested here. But I couldn't find a feeder as mentioned. More generally, isn't there a checklist or a general approach to debugging akonadi, nepomuk and Kontact?

• What algorithm(s) can be used to achieve reasonably good next word prediction?

  What is a good way of implementing "next-word prediction"? For example, the user types "I am" and the system suggests "a" and "not" (or possibly others) as the next word. I am aware of a method that uses Markov Chains and some training text(obviously) to more or less achieve this. But I read somewhere that this method is very restrictive and applies to very simple cases. I understand basics of neural networks and genetic algorithms(though have never used them in a serious project) and maybe they could be of some help. I wonder if there are any algorithms that, given appropriate training text(e.g., newspaper articles, and the user's own typing) can come up with reasonably appropriate suggestions for the next word. If not (links to)algorithms, general high-level methods to attack this problem are welcome.

• Solo .NET Programmer moving to a team

  I've been a solo .NET programmer for a small startup for the last 8 years. I've put together some pretty decent software, and I always strived to better myself and conform to best practices, including source control (SVN/TFS). I worked very closely with a team of engineers of other disciplines, but when it came down to the software I was the only one programming. I love the craft of programming and love learning new things to sharpen my tools. In 2 weeks I will be starting a new job in a team of 20 .NET developers. My position will be mid-level, and I will be working under some programmers with incredibly impressive backgrounds. Again, the team aspect of development will be new to me, so I'm looking for some general "new guy" tips that will help me be as effective and easy to get along with as possible from the get-go. Anything goes, including high level tips, and small day-to-day things about communication.

• Creating a Template Like System in cPanel

  I am creating a medium sized website using cPanel and their File Manager system and the majority of my pages are going to be the same with a different title and content section and I wanted to see if there is a system for making one general template file and then having all the other pages inherit from that file so all I have to do is have a content and title section and the rest of the links, headers, and whatnot can be changed throughout the site by just changing one file. Is there anything like this? I have used Jinaj2 in python and a few other systems for other server scripting languages but I am not sure how to implement it with cPanel.

I have an excellent tutorial but it is on sql-server 2008. 1) Is it worth me switching over to mssql (I understand the SQL is different) so that I will learn all about SQL and databases in general? 2) Do most people use MySQL or MSSQL 3) What is best practice, and I am talking mainly for websites.

  I'm just starting out with a Code-Quality-plugin development for my organization based on the recently released .NET Compiler Platform APIs (Roslyn APIs). I would like to know what are the most relevant possible ways that it could be used by the developer community apart from the usual IDE experience as answered in other questions. I was wondering the implications of opening up a compiler to general public and never came across anything "breakthrough", that could possibly add up to the value of IDE experiences. Is there any performance bottleneck for its implementation since the compiler itself is managed code?

• Mount to /dev/sdb1 without password

  I am unable to mount a USB drive (or SD card) to my system without root access. When I plug in a USB drive, it is visible in the left column of Nautilus, but when I click on it to open it, I receive the error message Unable to mount 2.1 GB Filesystem Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 1: helper failed with: mount: only root can mount /dev/sdb1 on /media/sdb1 I am able to mount the drive using sudo mount -w /dev/sdb1, but this causes problems for operations such as creating startup discs, which requires unmounting and remounting the drive. I suspect this problem may be caused by the fact that when I upgraded from 11.10 to 12.04, I had an SD card plugged in. This caused the system to stall during later startups, as it could not find this drive. I remedied this by editing a line of /etc/fstab to read /dev/sdb1 /media/sdb1 vfat noauto 0 0 However, I am dual booting Ubuntu with Windows XP, and I have no problem mounting the C: drive of the Windows system without root access, so I feel that this is a problem related to the mount point rather than mounting in general.

  So I know everyone here is all about private offices, how many developers actually have them. I am sort of half skeptical. I can believe that lead developers have them, but thats normally just one person in your average office. If it would not be to much to ask: Do you work in a totally awesome office or a nasty old cube? (or somewhere in between) What's your relative rank in the office? (junior, programmer II, senior, lead, etc.) are you doing internal software, or are you in a software-centric environment? • How can I store post rankings that change with time?

  I'm trying to learn how to code a website algorithm like Reddit.com where there are thousands of posts that need to be ranked. Their ranking algorithm works like this (you don't have to read it, its more of a general question that I have): http://amix.dk/blog/post/19588 Right now I have posts stored in a database, I record their dates and they each have an upvotes and downvotes field so I'm storing their records. I want to figure out how do you store their rankings? When specific posts have ranking values, but they change with time, how could you store their rankings? If they aren't stored, do you rank every post every time a user loads the page? When would you store the posts? Do you run a cron job to automatically give every post a new value every x minutes? Do you store their value? Which is temporary. Maybe, until that post reaches its minimum score and is forgotten?

• Audio codec consuming high battery power

  My powertop reports this for the two audio codec components. 4.85 W 100.0% Device Audio codec hwC0D3: Intel 4.85 W 100.0% Device Audio codec hwC0D0: Realtek I think 10 W for audio is too high. Can somebody please suggest me a way to reduce the power consumption? It'd be nice if someone could educate me on this, I have an idea about codecs in general but I have no clue about their internals? Why is it that these two components keep running always even when I am not listening to audio?

  You may have noticed that Weblogic Server (WLS) 9.2.X and WLS 10.0.X releases have been removed from the Oracle Software Delivery Cloud. The Delivery Team has been asked to remove or update any product pack or product that embeds WLS 10.3.2 or earlier versions. This is consistent with general Oracle practice of removing old product versions from public distribution systems, and encourages customer usage and adoption of newer product releases such as WLS 10.3.3 or newer.  For the convenience of existing supported customers, a media request SR on My Oracle Support can be entered to obtain any removed media.  Information on how to open such an SR can be found on  MOS Doc ID 1071023.1 . OTN will also be reviewed and similar modifications may potentially be done.  The following media packs will be removed from E-Delivery this week, as of the above reason. • Memory Management/Embedded Management in C

  Im wondering if there is a set or a few good books/Tutorials/Etc.. that go into Memory Management/Allocation Specifically (or at least have a good dedicated section to it) when it comes to C. This is more for me learning Embedded and trying to keep Size down. I've read and Learned C fine, and the "standard" Learning books. However most of the books don't spend a huge amount of time (Understandably since C is pretty huge in general) going into the Finer details about whats going on Down Under.
