    I am contemplating creating a realtime app where an iPod Touch/iPhone/iPad talks to a server-side component (which produces MIDI, and sends it onward within the host). When I ping my iPod Touch on Wifi I get huge latency (and a enormous variance, too): 64 bytes from 192.168.1.3: icmp_seq=9 ttl=64 time=38.616 ms 64 bytes from 192.168.1.3: icmp_seq=10 ttl=64 time=61.795 ms 64 bytes from 192.168.1.3: icmp_seq=11 ttl=64 time=85.162 ms 64 bytes from 192.168.1.3: icmp_seq=12 ttl=64 time=109.956 ms 64 bytes from 192.168.1.3: icmp_seq=13 ttl=64 time=31.452 ms 64 bytes from 192.168.1.3: icmp_seq=14 ttl=64 time=55.187 ms 64 bytes from 192.168.1.3: icmp_seq=15 ttl=64 time=78.531 ms 64 bytes from 192.168.1.3: icmp_seq=16 ttl=64 time=102.342 ms 64 bytes from 192.168.1.3: icmp_seq=17 ttl=64 time=25.249 ms Even if this is double what the iPhone-Host or Host-iPhone time would be, 15ms+ is too long for the app I'm considering.   • Why is a CoreData forceFetch required after a delete on the iPad but not the iPhone?

    When the following code is run on the iPhone the count of fetched objects after the delete is one less than before the delete. But on the iPad the count remains the same. This inconsistency was causing a crash on the iPad because elsewhere in the code, soon after the delete, fetchedObjects is called and the calling code, trusting the count, attempts access to the just-deleted object's properties, resulting in a NSObjectInaccessibleException error (see below). A fix has been to use that commented-out call to performFetch, which when executed makes the second call to fetchObjects yield the same result as on the iPhone without it. My question is: Why is the iPad producing different results than the iPhone?   • How do I secure a .NET Web Service for use by an iPhone application?

    Hello, The title says it all, I have a Web Service written in .NET that provides data for an iPhone application. It will also allow the application make a "reservation." Currently it's all internal to the corporate network but obviously when the iPhone application is published I will need ensure the Web Service is available externally. How would I go about securing the Web Service? There are two aspects I'm looking into: Authentication for accessing the web service Protection for the data being transferred I'm no so bothered about the data being passed back and forth as it will be viewable in the application anyway (which will be free). The key issue for me is preventing users from accessing the Web Service and making reservations themselves. At the moment I am considering encrypting any strings in the XML data passed back and forth so only the client can effectively use the web service sidestepping the need for authentication and providing protection for the data. This is the only model I have seen but I think the overheads on the iPhone and even for the web service make for a poor user experience. Any solutions at all would be most welcome? Thanks

    This is intentionally left broad. If you wanted to show users what iPhone/mobile applications could to for them. The more interactive the better, but it must be quick to build as you can't code up every idea. Let us assume real-time games are out of scope. Throw out ideas or state which approach would be best. Here are some of my ideas, what are yours? Hack a app that loads mostly web or image content, but has hyperlinks to get around in. This would mean static data. Build screens which look great but can only be navigated in a story board type fashion. Load the web version or equivalent on the iPhone and say: now image the buttons and navigation is better. A paper based prototype. Flash or video walk through running on the phone. String existing iPhone apps and web pages together with minimal glue just to convey the idea. Can anyone share prototyping methods for other mobile devices? Ex: The palm prototype was just a block of wood and note pad that was carried around.

  • MPMoviePlayerController seems to make 2 calls for each movie

    I seem to have an issue where an iphone app using the MPMoviePlayerController seems to make 2 calls to the server for each video it wants to play back. This occurs with iphone 3.x OS and libraries but not with iphone 2.x. I know that iphone does progressive download and will make multiple 206 requests, etc. but as far as our back end is concerned the player appears to make 2 separate sessions. This only appears to be an issue with iPhone native apps and not iphone videos played through safari. Additional info from apple: iPhone OS 3.0 added support for streaming audio and video over HTTP, and MPMoviePlayerController must validate the media before playback to determine if it is streaming content or progressively downloaded content. This is the delay you are experiencing. On a fast network, the delay should be minimized. Is this double check causing 2 sessions be created for each video request? Any one else seeing same issue? Is there a remedy?

    I would like to keep my contacts and a calendar synchronized between several desktops and cellphones. Is there a way to achieve this without using Google or similar organisations? I want to keep my data protected and safe, so an encrypted transfer would be useful. Do i need to install a service on my own rootserver? or are there any services available, that are safe? I read this post, but there is not mentioned not to use Google: Thunderbird contacts sync so no solutions with SoGo or LDAP. maybe Zimbra is a solution? or Funambol? I tried kolab, but had some unsolveable problems.
