• Encyrpting a Macbook with Truecrypt (Snow Leopard + Bootcamp)

  I have a Macbook Pro with Snow Leopard and Windows 7 Pro (Bootcamp). I have encyrpted all the company computers with truecrypt and now its the Macbooks turn. Will Truecrypt only encrypt the Win 7 partition and will it disable Bootcamp, or would it install after Bootcamp, whereby after I select either the OS X or Windows partition under Bootcamp, the Truecrypt encryption for Win 7 would be activated? • Trouble with wireless driver on a Dell Latitude D830

  After uninstalling Dell's wireless utility I get a new hardware found dialog that can not find any driver for my wifi card on it's own. I'm running Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3, and I would like to use the default wifi handler since dell's utility does not work with my company's wireless switch. • Socket 775 - 1156 cooler compatibility

  I bought a new mobo with Socket 1156 (Asus P7P55D PRO). Previously I had a mobo with Socket 775 and CPU cooler AC Freezer 7 Pro. However, I'm not able to fit the cooler to the new mobo eventhough the mounting holes look to be at the same positions. I've seen a few coolers which support both sockets. Are these platforms "cooler mounting" compatible, or the cooler really have to support both sockets explicitely?

  I have a MSDN Subscription and downloaded Windows 8.1 RTM today. It fails to install. After mounting the ISO and installing (with a Windows 8.1 Pro product code), selecting "Keep my apps and settings", it copies all installation files, restarts and then bluescreens at around 50%, then rolls back to the previous version. System has 64 GB Memory, Supermicro, Xeon E5-1650, Intel SSD, runs Hyper-V, Windows 8 Pro. What may be causing this and how do I fix it?

• Excel 2007 charts disappearing

  I have an Excel 2007 file with macros and VB (.xlsm) and one of the worksheets has charts. When I open the file those charts are shown. However when I CTRL+Scroll to zoom in the charts vanish.   I am running a 15" MacBook Pro (2.66GHz) and 4GB of RAM. I am considering downgrading to a 13 MacBook Pro (2.4GHz) with 8GB of RAM. Most of what I do at work is through Windows and I need to run it virtually. So my real question is when running a virtual machine will the virtual processor be utilizing RAM or part of the hosts processor? My assumption is that it will utilize the allocated RAM but I have seen zero documentation to support that.

• Slow WLAN file transfer between server and tablet

  My file server is running Ubuntu 12.04 and I'm sharing files from it over samba. It is connected via gigabit ethernet. My desktop, running Windows 8.1, is also connected via gigabit ethernet. I can transfer files between the two and completely saturate that gigabit pipe. However, I just got a Surface Pro 2, and I'm trying to stream HD movies from my server to the device over WiFi. For some reason, I can't break much past 1.5MB/s transferring files over the network. I've tried streaming through XBMC and a standard file copy; no difference. To add the confusion, if I connect to my guest network and then use my VPN server (installed on the router) to access the file server, I get around 3.2MB/s. I've been running diagnostics to determine the root and I think I've found it but I have no idea what is causing it or how to fix it. • How to connect to a SOCKS Proxy from an iPhone/iPod Touch?

  I like to surf securely and privately via a SOCKS proxy which I created via SSH tunneling, on the Mac. I used the SSH client on my Mac to achieve this. Then I thought, since the iPhone OS is essentially Mac OS, the same trick might work also on the iPhone. I managed to create a SSh tunnel on my iPhone via the Terminal (iPhone's Terminal). (Yes, it's jail-broken) ssh -D [port] [email protected] At this stage my iPhone is SOCKS proxy. However, there doesn't seem to be a way in the iPhone networking preference panel to specify a SOCKS proxy. Someone suggest creating a Proxy Auto-Contig (PAC) file to workaround this, but that sounds complicated. Any ideas how to make iPhone use it's own SOCKS proxy?

• Automatic subdomain wildcard for DHCP-DDNS additions?

  I'm running dhcp-4.0.2 server and bind-9.6.1-P3. When a new Mac OSX DHCP client with the name "harry" connects to the network, the DHCP server gives it a lease, and adds appropriate A & PTR records via DDNS. This works fine; harry.my.domain points to (e.g.) 192.168.1.3, the Mac client knows that its name is harry.my.domain, 192.168.1.3 points back to harry.my.domain, and all that is great. Now I want *.harry.my.domain to resolve to 192.168.1.3, and I don't want to have to go in and add wildcard records into zone files. I want the Mac to connect to the network, and have the hostname and wildcard subdomain resolve to the IP address it's been given. Is there a way to do this? Thanks!

• Can't ping host from vmware guest using bridged networking

  Host is Windows 7 Guest is Ubuntu 11.04 Network adapter is wireless I can ping other computers on the network but not the host. No firewall are involved. Sniffing the traffic with wireshark it looks like both the host and the guest are using the same MAC address. My guest simply doesn't receive a reply when asking for 192.168.1.101 (the host) My router has no problem giving both of them different IP addresses but maybe duplicate MAC address is the problem? It seems logical that both will have the same MAC address (from the host point of view) but it strange that there is no work around for this because otherwise I don't see how the host and guess are supposed to communicate.

But I want to script some queries, and Sequel Pro is not scriptable. What should I do? I've read about tunneling to mysql via SSH. I have shell access to the server, with an SSH key on my Mac, so ssh [email protected] -p 7978 gets me in. Should tunneling the MySQL port 3306 work? Like this? ssh [email protected] -L 3306:127.0.0.1:3306 (It "times out" after a minute.) Do I need to install mysql on my Mac?

  Hi there, first of all, I asked this question on SuperUser.com, but no one there could help me. Well, we eventually got our Mac Mini Server. We now want to set up a small Remote Access VPN using this Mac Mini Server. Firstly we are not sure of the components needed additionally to the server to setup this VPN. We currently have the following: 1 Mac Mini Server 1 Firewall Router (Billion 802.11g ADSL2+ router with VPN capabilities [it says so on the box]), we currently use this as our internet connection and resides X.X.0.1 on our network. 4Mbps ADSL connection (Should this line have VPN capability enabled by the service provider?) We are not sure what else needs to be included to enable our small VPN. Any advice would be really helpful?

• PC version of Google Chrome doesn't recognize ".local" domain name

  With Bonjour installed in PC, I can access my server in Mac with ".local". For example, I can access my mac with the name "prosseek.local". The problem is that in Chrome for PC, it doesn't recognize "local" to open search page instead of accessing mac server. This issue isn't happening with other web browsers (explore/firefox) in PC. What is even wierder is that chrome seems to recognize the ".local" sometimes, but not always. How to solve this issue? Or, how can I teach chrome that ".local" is a part of page name in order not to direct to search page?

• Ubuntu with Netatalk and Samba TimeMachine can't connect

  I installed netatalk on my Ubuntu Server a few weeks ago and configured it so that I could use Timemachine from my mac to backup on a server instead of a external hard drive. It worked really good until yesterday when I installed Samba to be able to share certain folders on my server to my mac. Now I receive an error msg: There are no shares available or you are not allowed to access them on the server. Please contact your system administrator to resolve the problem. From what I understand is that the problem is on the server and not on my mac. I have tried to restart the computer and without adding any of the folders Samba is sharing adding the timemachine "afp://...@...". Is there a problem running them both at the same time, do I need to configure samba so that it doesn't reject afp? I'm pretty new at this...

• Sync iPhone applications in iTunes

  Suppose I have one the one hand one iTunes library on a PC used to sync Outlook contacts and calendar plus on the other hand one iTunes library on a Mac that syncs music, podcasts, apps, ringtones, etc. Both libraries are based on iTunes 9.0.2. It turns out that the iTunes library on the PC always tries to sync apps and ringtones as well. Unfortunately, this boils down to deleting apps and ringtones from the iPhone because the apps are not part of the iTunes library on the PC. After unchecking the checkbox to sync apps and ringtones and plugging the iPhone into the Mac the checkbox is also unchecked on the Mac. It seems as if the settings for syncing apps and ringtones are stored on the iPhone rather than in the particular iTunes library. Whenever syncing apps and ringtones is active on one machine it is also active on the other and vice versa. How can I make the PC ignore apps and ringtones and only sync contacts and calendar?

• DVI-D connection does not display properly at higher resolutions (2560 x 1440)

  I have two computers connected to a Dell U2711 monitor. A PC which is connected using DisplayPort and a Mac connected using DVI-D. The PC displays 2560 x 1440 resolutions perfectly but when I try and set that resolution on the Mac it displays in an extremely fuzzy manner. So fuzzy in fact that I can hardly read the text on the screen. I've tried the Mac out connected via DisplayPort (unfortunately the monitor only has one DisplayPort connection) and it worked perfectly. I also had it connected via DVI-D in the past and it worked then. For some reason it just does not work anymore. I was wondering if this problem might be caused by a dodgy cable or perhaps not having the correct one. Can anyone think of what the issue might be? I've checked out the DVI-D spec and it should be able to display resolutions of 2560 x 1440 correctly.

• Western Digital not recognized by Windows after power Outage on windows

  I have WD Essential Plus 1.5TB (formatted in NTFS). It was working fine under windows and mac mini. While it was connected to the mac mini, I had an power outage and now the HD is not being recognized under windows anymore. Now on the mac mini the HD is fine and I can see my data. When I use ActiveBootDisk under windows, then I can see the data as well. I updated the drivers on windows machine and also updated the firmware on the HD, but its still not being recognized. Is there any way for me to fix the HD under windows without having to re-format it?
