  • How to communicate between service controller and a service/daemon?

    It is easy to display the status of a Windows service or to control it (start/stop) from a GUI application but the question if how about receiving/sending notifications from the service? Like: service telling to the user monitoring it that it needs attention. Please consider that you can have several controllers started at any time in a multi-user environment. Do you know an example(open source) for this kind of communication? Extra points for a platform independent solution :)

    Recently, I was buzzed by the following problem STL std::string class causes crashes and memory corruption on multi-processor machines while using VC6. I plan to use an alternative STL libraries instead of the one provided by VC6. I came across 2 libraries : STLPort and SGI STL I was wondering what is the difference between the 2.     It is often said that using LDAP is a good way to store data about users. That's beacause users' "directory" is hierarchical and it changes rarely. But in my opinion that doesn't exclude using RDBMS. What might be reasons to use LDAP? I guess that storing multi-valued fields or adding custom fields in LDAP might be easier but it can be done in database too (unless you have many records)

    I am new to SQL Server Management Studio and am wondering if there is a way to see what queries have been ran against a database. Surely there is a way to see these. In the Activity monitor, there is a "Recent Expensive Queries" but I'm guessing that isn't all of the queries since I'm not seeing the ones I have ran. I am running SQL Server 2008 v 10.0.1600.22.

  • c++ volatile multithreading variables

    I'm writing a C++ app. I have a class variable that more than one thread is writing to. In C++, anything that can be modified without the compiler "realizing" that it's being changed needs to be marked volatile right? So if my code is multi threaded, and one thread may write to a var while another reads from it, do I need to mark the var volaltile? [I don't have a race condition since I'm relying on writes to ints being atomic] Thanks!

  • What's the best way to tell if the mouse is over a form or not?

    I figured out how to capture mouse clicks over the entire form, but this method doesn't translate well for MouseEnter and MouseLeave. My form layout is made up from many Panels and TableLayoutPanels so there's no all-encompassing control I can monitor events for, and obviously a MouseLeave event for a button doesn't mean the cursor left the entire form. Has anyone figured out a good way to get around this?

    Part of the app I'm making requires the user to fill in a multi-page form, the contents of which will be saved locally (perhaps using Core Data). Are there any best practices for this? This form just includes text fields. I guess the options are UITextFields, or perhaps a UIWebView, with the fields as part of an html form? Are there are any best practices, or design patterns, which are good for this kind of thing?

    Are we reduced to ClickOnce to manage our application state for our users? We use Visual Patch currently. When our users update (we reproduced this) we get errors from the updated versions to our compiled versions. Since our developer state is not 'updated' with Visual Patch how can we monitor and eventual squash the various System.MethodNotFound, and System.NullReferenceException in our updated versions of our application?

  • How to reliably categorize HTTP sessions in proxy to corresponding browser' windows/tabs user is viewing?

    I was using the Fiddler core .Net library as a local proxy to record the user activity in web. However I ended up with a problem which seems dirty to solve. I have a web browser say Google Chrome, and the user opened like 10 different tabs each with different web URLs. The problem is that the proxy records all the HTTP session initiated by each pages separately, causing me to figure out using my intelligence the tab which the corresponding HTTP session belonged to. I understand that this is because of the stateless nature of HTTP protocol. However I am just wondering is there an easy way to do this? I ended up with below c# code for that in Fiddler. Still its not a reliable solution due to the heuristics. This is a modification of the sample project bundled with Fiddler core for .NET 4. Basically what it does is filtering HTTP sessions initiated in last few seconds to find the first request or switching to another page made by the same tab in browser. It almost works, but not seems to be a universal solution.   • Cocoa: NSOpenPanel Threads

    I am monitoring my application using Activity Monitor and whenever NSOpenPanel is called the application appears as having 9 threads and stays like that until the application is closed. Is there a way to release those threads?, Or am I simply misunderstanding what the threads number means?, surely it isn't a good thing to have them open for no reason. Any help would be appreciated

But I can't grep 'aria2c' in process list after reboot. Who can give me a sample service file for it? Thanks
