• Laptop will not boot

  This is a dell studio 1558 laptop. Now, something is wrong with the charger that it won't charge the laptop, but the laptop can turn on and operate properly as long as it is attached. It has been like this for a while, but it's not the problem. My problem is that as of yesterday, It takes several minutes to get past the "dell" startup logo (where is says "f2 setup" and "f12 boot options"). After it gets past, it beeps as normal to tell me about the charger and gives me the f2/f12 options and f1 to continue as normal. I can press f12 to get into boot options and load into my live USB BackTrack 5 ISO, but after "startx" it just stays at a black screen. I can also access BIOS setup, but see nothing that would help the problem. When I boot to the HDD, it gives me this Intel UNDI, PXE-2.1 (build 083) Realktek PCIe GBE Family Controller Series V.2.29 (06/30/09) PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM Operating System not found Also, pressing f8 gives me the same results as booting as normal. It is running Windows 7 Ultimate, dual-core Intel i3 @ 2.27ghz and 4gb RAM. I think there is an issue with the HDD, as the "Operating System not found" would lead me to believe. Is this a fixable problem?

• Pitfalls to using Gluster as a home/profile directory server?

  I was asking recently about options for divvying up access to file servers, as we have a NAS solution that gets fairly bogged down when our users (with giant profiles, especially) all log in nearly simultaneously. I ran across Gluster and it looks like it can cluster different physical storage media into a single virtual volume and share it out like a virtual NAS from the client perspective and it support CIFS. My question is whether something like this would be feasible to use for home and profile directories in an active directory environment. I was worried about ACL's, primarily, as I didn't think CIFS was fine-grained enough to support NTFS permissions and it didn't look like Gluster exports those permission levels, just the base permissions for basic file sharing. I got the impression that using Gluster would allow for data to be redundant across multiple servers and would speed up access to the files under heavy load, while allowing us to dynamically boost storage capacity by just adding another server and telling Gluster's master node to add that server. Maybe I'm wrong with my understanding of it though. Anyone else use it or care to share how feasible this is?

• Can't access my accelerated hard disk from msdos after installing linux on ssd cache

  I mistakenly installed Linux Mint on my ssd (forgot my PC actually came with one), when it detected a ~31GiB disk that it wanted to install to, I was a bit confused since I had brought out 30Gb in my primary disk for it, but I clicked continue. After installation, I tried to boot back into my Windows and it brought out some Intel Raid Disk Utility stuff saying I should disable acceleration on a disk something couldn't be found, I canceled it but whatever I tried, recovery tools, setups etc, I couldn't just access the drive which was apparently using the SSD as cache. Since then I've been stuck. I tried setting the 'raid' flag to the disk from 'gParted', still I couldn't. I tried the diskraid utility from windows recover disk, it said it couldn't detect any raid, diskpart sees the partition but doesn't see the volume, when I remove the raid flag, it sees the volume as one of raw type, and I can't access anything. I can however mount the drive from terminal in Mint and access my files, but I don't have any backup media at the moment so I can do a factory re-install. Please how do I go about solving the issue, precisely I would like to know how to boot into the drive again. Thanks!

• Windows 7 machine, can't connect remotely until after ping

  I have a Windows 7 (Home Premium) machine that doubles as a media centre and subversion server. There's a couple of problems with this setup, when connecting to the server from an XP (SP3) machine: Firstly, the machine won't respond to it's machine name until after it's IP address has been pinged. • file association in Windows 8

  Associating a file to a program should be easy in Windows. However, i find it rather difficult when I'm working on Windows 8. associating a file to a desktop application that I install on my computer is easy because the whole operation is entirely the same with that in the previous Windows releases. What I find rather difficult is associating a file to a Metro apps that I download from the store. So far, I have been using Multimedia 8 (a metro app) to open my video files. However, this app cannot handle particular files-like *.dat-that can be associated easily to desktop video applications, such as media player classic and the like. When I try to associate my DAT files to Multimedia 8, there is indeed a "look for another app on this PC" option at the bottom of the "open with" pop up. But alas, I cannot figure out how to locate my Multimedia 8 app to which I want to associate my DAT file (as well as other video files that are not yet associated to this metro app). If anyone of you knows how to locate those metro apps, please tell me. many thanks

• Recover mysql database - mysqldump gives "table <tablename> doesn't exist (1146)"

  Backstory Ubuntu died (wouldn't boot) and I couldn't fix it. I booted a live cd to recover the important stuff and saved it to my NAS. One of the things I backed up was /var/lib/mysql. Reinstalled with Linux Mint because I was on Ubuntu 10.0.4 this was a good opportunity to try a new distro (and I don't like Unity). Now I want to recover my old mediawiki, so I shut down mysql daemon, cp -R /media/NAS/Backup/mysql/mediawiki@002d1_19_1 /var/lib/mysql/, set file ownership and permissions correctly, and start mysql back up. Problem Now I'm trying to export the database so I can restore the database, but when I execute the mysqldump I get an error: $ mysqldump -u mediawikiuser -p mediawiki-1_19_1 -c | gzip -9 > wiki.2012-11-15.sql.gz Enter password: mysqldump: Got error: 1146: Table 'mediawiki-1_19_1.archive' doesn't exist when using LOCK TABLES Things I've tried I tried using --skip-lock-tables but I get this: Error: Couldn't read status information for table archive () mysqldump: Couldn't execute 'show create table `archive`': Table 'mediawiki-1_19_1.archive' doesn't exist (1146) I tried logging in to mysql and I can list the tables that should be there, but trying to describe or select from them errors out the same way as the dump: mysql> show tables; +----------------------------+ | Tables_in_mediawiki-1_19_1 | +----------------------------+ | archive | | category | | categorylinks | ... | user_properties | | valid_tag | | watchlist | +----------------------------+ 49 rows in set (0.00 sec) mysql> describe archive; ERROR 1146 (42S02): Table 'mediawiki-1_19_1.archive' doesn't exist I believe mediawiki was installed using innodb and binary data. • SPDIF passthrough not working in Windows 7

  Hi, I'm running Windows 7 on a computer with an Audigy Platinum eX sound card connected to a surround receiver via optical cabling. Sound works fine when listening to non-surround audio sources, such as windows sounds or MP3. However, when I view a DVD in Media Center and the SPDIF passthrough kicks in, I can only hear an awful noise instead of the movie soundtrack. Also, the receiver does not show the Dolby Digital or DTS symbol, but stays at Dolby Prologic, so it seems it doesn't identify the sound encoding properly. I could switch off SPDIF passthrough and use the sound card's decoder instead, but that's not an option for me since it would create more problems with regular MP3 playback via additional Stereo Receiver which is also connected to the same sound card. I've tried both the default Audigy drivers that come with Windows 7 and the latest drivers from the Soundblaster website, but the problem remains unchanged. Also, I have ensured that the receiver's Dolby Digital decoder is not broken by successfully connecting it to my PS3 to view a Dolby Digital DVD. Besides, SPDIF passthrough was working fine in Vista before I upgraded to Windows 7. Is there anything else I could try?

• Winamp question: Generating 'dynamic playlists' from file playlists -OR- mass-tagging by file playli

  I'm trying to think of a way to do this. I sort my songs into a variety of playlists corresponding to different 'moods' I might have as I listen to them, and some songs fit for more than one kind of mood (e.g. a jazz song might be 'stylish' and 'emotional', or something to that effect). I also give them star ratings for a general sort of opinion about them. I want to be able to filter and sort my media library by the moods I want or don't want, as well as by star rating. Anyone have a good way to do something like this? I can't seem to use Winamp's dynamic playlists to generate lists from existing filesystem playlists (e.g. songs in a given .m3u files). Hand-tagging files with Winamp's tag editor is a royal pain. It's trouble enough just giving a star rating and sorting into playlists as is. If there is there a way to mass tag songs within each playlist with mood words to allow me to create dynamic playlists, I'd be fine (for now). It'd be nice if I could do this via some kind of hotkey for each song, too. I'm looking to see if I can use a macro program or something to do that, though. Thanks in advance. • I/O Error on LG GSA-H12N DVD drive on Windows 7

  I am facing an I/O Error when I try to burn DVD data discs on my LG GSA-H12N DVD drive on Windows 7. Note that I was able to do this same operation on the same hardware/software just a day earlier without any problems, but with Windows XP. The only change (AFAIK) has been the installation of Windows 7 to replace Windows XP on this PC. Here is the error I get when I try to burn a DVD data disc using CDBurnerXP 4.2.7.1801: Burning error occured An error occured while burning the disc. Most likely the disc is not usable. Usually these errors happen if the inserted media is not compatible to the drive or of poor quality. (devNTSPTI_IO_Error) Could not write to Disc (LBA: 52864 Length: 32). SCSI Pass-through Interface I/O Error. - 0xFF045D Note that there can be no problem with the discs since I have been using the same discs (from the same box) just before the Windows 7 installation with no problems. The only change has been Windows 7. I tried InfraRecorder v0.5 and ImgBurn v2.5 and got similar I/O errors: Note that Windows 7 lists the LG GSA-H21N drive as being compatible (see this link). I also checked the LG Drivers website and using the firware update from there updated the drive firmware from version UL01 to UL02. But, even this has not helped. The drive reads DVDs without any problem, but continues to produce coasters. Could someone help me figure out what is the problem? Thanks :)

• What Wireless Router/ADSL Modem to get? N-band a must!!

  I'm looking for a Dual-N band Router OR ADSL Gateway and I'd like some recommendations. Situation: I have a 802.11b/g ADSL gateway provided by my telco, but the WIFI signal won't cover all the house (especially the living-room, so my tv-connected Mac Mini has poor to no internet access). So I'm looking to either replace the DSL modem with a N-enabled one, or to add a Router to the mix. I've had a modem+router setup for many years, and I know the advantatges (double NAT, double FW = more security) and issues (more complex to troubleshoot, two possible points of failure), so I'd rather live with a single (ADSL Gateway) device, if possible. Requirements: Dual-N Band (300 Mbs WIFI) 1 GB Ethernet ports ADSL2+ support (if it's a ADSL gateway, which would be desirable) "Best" range and speed possible Nice to have: USB port to share disks/printers on the network Media streaming I've been a long time user of Linksys, so googling around I found the WRT610N (http://www.linksysbycisco.com/US/en/products/WRT610N) for a "Pure Router" perspective, and it's one of those that Linksys styles "N++" (http://www.linksysbycisco.com/US/en/promo/Promotion-Go-Wireless?stepname=Promotion-Step-Go-Wireless-High-Performance) But I haven't been able to find similar "ADSL" gateways. I've found the WAG320N, but there is little to no info in the Linksys site (i.e., i don't know if it's Dual Band, or if it has GB ethernet) Any opinions/recommendations of other products/suggestions are more than welcome.

• Very slow browsing shared folder XP client/host

  I have a pretty straightforward setup where I'm storing media files on an XP pro machine, and sharing the folder to be accessed by other XP pro machines around the house. (Typically, there's only one client accessing the share at a time, although there may be several with the share mounted.) It's been working just fine for years, but I've recently started having some problems. A couple of days ago, the host PC had power disconnected while it was running. It was restarted and everything seemed fine initially, but since then browsing the shared folder from client machines has been extremely slow and actually reading data is all but impossible. The problem exists in every access method I've tried: Windows Explorer, VLC dialogs, command line, etc. My first thought was that the disk was experiencing problems, but there are no problems viewing the files locally on the host machine. My second thought was that there was a network problem on the host machine, so I removed and reinstalled drivers for the NIC with no change. My third thought was that there might've been a problem elsewhere on the network, so I swapped out hardware to no avail. I'm regrouping and trying to come up with a methodical approach to figuring out what might be wrong. I would of course be thrilled if you can suggest specific problems (Microsoft KB articles, etc.) that I might check, but I'm not expecting a silver bullet. If you can help me outline an approach to identify the problem (including recommended tools, e.g., disk checkers, network analyzers, etc.) I'd greatly appreciate it.

• CIFS mounted drive setting "stick-bit" on all files, cannot change permissions or modify files

  I have a folder mounted on an Ubuntu 8.10 sever through cifs that I simply cannot change the permissions on once mounted. Here is a breakdown of what's going on: All files within the mounted folder automatically have their permissions set to -rwxrwSrwx regardless of whether the file is create on the windows server or on the linux machine. I have the same directory mounted on two other linux servers (both running 9.10 instead of 8.10) with no problems at all. They all are using the same fstab options and the same credentials. //server/folder /media/backups cifs credentials=/etc/samba/.arcadia_cred,noexec,noserverino 0 0 I've I run a chmod command a million different ways, all of which report successfully changing the permissions. However it doesn't. The issue began after I updated from 8.04 to 8.10 Any idea why this may be happening on one machine? Since it started after an upgrade I'm not sure what is the bes thing to do. Any help you could give would great! None of my automated backup scripts are working because of this!

• Dual boot windows 8 pro and windows 7 on XPS 8500 Special Edition

  I am trying to install a dual boot with windows 7 premium and windows 8 Pro on an XPS 8500 special edition. I created a new primary partition on my C: drive, inserted the windows 8 install disk, and rebooted my computer from DVD. I select custom install and the dialog box saying "Where do you want to install windows at?" pops up but none of my drives are listed. Please help me determine what is going on. I don't understand why none of my drives are showing up on this menu. Not even the original drive. When I go to load driver and click on the partition I created it tells me "No signed device drivers were found. Make sure the installation media contains the correct drivers, and then click OK." resolved above issue by running setup from the source folder on the install disk instead of booting from DVD. Was able to locate my new partition and start install. It completes the first step of "Copying windows files" just fine but then on the next step "Getting files ready for installation" my computer restarts and attempts to load windows 8 but keeps telling me my pc needs to restart. This keeps going on in an infinite boot loop. Please help, this has been a nightmare!

  There is a Dell XPS 400 with Windows Media Center installer. It is installed on RAID (Intel Matrix Storage) which is built-in chipset south bridge. Raid has two 150 Gb WDC drivers connected as mirror. All drivers and updates are installed( sp3 and so on). A week ago PC changed its video mode to 256 colors (like VESA mode) and after several moments I got BSOD: c000021a: 0xc0000005 Doctor watson did not create dump although it is installed as default debugger. After reboot it said that config file is missing or corrupted. So, I boot to recovery console and found that registry file (config) is so small. I've replaced it with one from recovery point and windows booted sucessfully. But after about 3 hrs -- it has crashed again in the same wat! I look in event viewer: is said that Explorer.exe failed to open \global??\DLIAFS. I look in winobj, and found that it is a device. I made "deny from everyone" for this device ACL, and after several hours my windows crashed. I restored registry, boot again and there was no error about DLIAFS. I did full chkdsk and it did not found anything bad. But I found event about error paging to \Harddrive1\D. I do not have pagefile there, but I thought I should check my disk again. Unfortunatelly I cannt use smart tools for RAID, but I downloaded latest software from Intel (it can do the same things like RAID bios can but from windows). It verified my disks, found some errors, fix them, than I rebooted. And it crashed again. I am lost. What (except kernel debugging) could be done here? Thanks

• Abnormally high amount of Transmit discards reported by Solarwinds for multiple switches

Many of the ports on the 3750X's have 2960's connected to them and are hardcoded as trunk ports. • How do I make ESXi 5.0 to shutdown virtual machines when the physical power button is pushed?

  I have a home NAS/DLNA server built out of an HP Micro Server with the HP branded VMware ESXi 5.0.0 build-623860 (free license) installed. Being a home media center I'd like it to be "manageable" by all my household members. This requires that it needs to be powered on an off (including all the VMs inside) by anybody with the physical access to the server by simply pressing the power button on the chassis. The "startup" part is easy to obtain - all I had to do was to configure the startup/shutdown policy: Once the server powers up, all VMs start as well and that's exactly what I need. Well.. it did work up until 5.0.0U1, but that's a different story: http://blogs.vmware.com/vsphere/2012/03/free-esxi-hypervisor-auto-start-breaks-with-50-update-1.html Unfortunately, pressing the power button doesn't gracefully shutdown the guest machines - they are terminated instead. If I run the "shut down" command from the vSphere Client interface guests are powered off. I'd like to get the same end result when the physical power button is switched. I've poked around a bit on the ESXi server. There's a "/sbin/shutdown.sh" script that seemed to do exactly what I need... but after trying it does exactly what the power off button. The "/etc/inittab" contains an entry for the "shutdown" level but I suppose it's not hooked to the power button. I can't find any acpi related configuration, neither do I know what exactly is executed when the power button is pressed. Does anybody have a clue how can I make the VMs shutdown automatically when the physical power switch is pressed to turn of the computer?

• How can I fix video tearing and pausing on Windows XP Flash videos?

  I have what should be a reasonably fast PC: it's a Quadcore Intel 6600 at 2.4 GHz, 4MB of RAM, an ATI 3800 series video card and an LG L246WP monitor, which I selected particularly because it was supposed to work well with video and have no trails or other artifacts. So I should be able to play video with no problems. And I can, as long as that video isn't Flash video. With Flash, what I see is tearing, especially during pans, and pausing -- every few seconds the video pauses for about 300ms while the sound stays continuous. I tried going into the video card setup and changing vertical sync, pulldown detection, windows media video acceleration, deinterlacing and triple buffering. but no combination of settings I've tried has changed or corrected the problem in any way. I've also tried enabling and disabling hardware acceleration in the Flash settings, to no avail. This problem happens whether or not the video is streaming or has fully streamed in before playing. So, what can I do? Is this just a flash issue or is there a way to get it to work?

• Using UDF on a USB flash drive

  After failing to copy a file bigger than 4G to my 8G USB flash drive, I formatted it as ext3. While this is working fine for me so far, it will cause problems if I want to use it to copy files to someone which does not use Linux. I am thinking of formatting it as UDF instead, which I hope would allow it to be read (and possibly even written) on the three most popular operating systems (Windows, MacOS, and Linux), without having to install any extra drivers. However, from what I found on the web already, there seem to be several small gotchas related to which parameters are used to create the filesystem, which can reduce the compability (but most of the pages I found are about optical media, not USB flash drives). I would like to know: Which utility should I use to create the filesystem? (So far I have found mkudffs and genisoimage, and mkudffs seems the best option.) Which parameters should I use with the chosen utility for maximum compability? How compatible with the most common versions of these three operating systems UDF actually is? Is using UDF actually the best idea? Is there another filesystem which would have better compatibility, with no problematic restrictions like the FAT32 4G file size limit, and without having to install special drivers in every single computer which touches it?

• Blu-ray BD-R: Would you physically store it in a CaseLogic Wallet pocket?

  I keep several backup copies of my material and files. For my DVDs, one set of copies is kept in a CaseLogic wallet folder pack, so that I can easily move this around when visiting friends, family or for business. This is highly convenient. The other sets are kept in their jewel cases in hard plastic see thru storage boxes. Although CaseLogic wallet material is designed to be abrasion free, their caveat is that external dust will be the cause of any blemishes. If hard dust gets in these pockets, which is inevitable, this will occasionally cause light hair like scratches on the disc surface as the discs are removed and returned for access to their contents. This is of no consequence as the laser and error correction can more than cope with this. I'm aware that the blu-ray spec requires anti-scratch in disc surfaces but was wondering that, given the smaller pits, would dust and light scratches from wallet storage cause more problems with blu-rays than they would with DVDs? I'm using Blu-ray BD-R and BD-R DL write once media.

• Verizon 4G LTE vs. a LAN

  I have been having quite a bit of trouble getting my new Verizon 4G-LTE service running on a Windows 7 desktop. My desktop is on a LAN here at home with two other PC's. We all share printers, files, media, etc. Until yesterday, we also shared a Verizon 3G modem via a NetGear 3G broadband WAP. That isn't compatible with the 4G so now I am just trying to get the 4G modem working directly connected to one of the desktops. After some USB wrangling, it seems to work. Except, every 7-10 minutes the connection would drop. After some time on the phone with a very nice Verizon technician, it seems to be staying up - it's been up for 20 minutes now. He told me that my LAN was causing the 4G to drop. That traffic on my LAN, even though it is not destined for the internet (ICS not working yet) was causing the cell tower to detect an 'IP change' and a 'security violation' in my modem and drop my connection. Is this Verizon's way of forbidding more than one computer to share a modem? I have my computer running now without a LAN connection and the 4G is still up. But this isn't practical. Has anyone heard of this?

• Nginx with http/https - Http seemed redirected to https all the time

  I've this really weird behaviour with my ubuntu 10.04 / nginx 1.2.3 server. Basically I changed the SSL certificates this morning. And ever since it has been behaving weirdly on all apps. Godaddy is reporting that HTTPS/SSL setup is correct. When I try a page it still works correctly when I'm using HTTPS. But when I try using HTTP nginx reports error : 400 Bad Request The plain HTTP request was sent to HTTPS port After looking around on google for hours, I've tried different setup (while originaly my setup was working correctly for longtime, I just renewed certificates) I kindof found a half solution by adding this to my config : error_page 497 $request_uri; The realllly weird thing is that when I use this setup : server { listen 80; server_name john.johnrocks.eu; access_log /home/john/envs/john_prod/nginx_access.log; error_log /home/john/envs/john_prod/nginx_error.log; location / { uwsgi_pass unix:///home/john/envs/john_prod/john.sock; include uwsgi_params; } location /media { alias /home/john/envs/john_prod/johntab/www; } location /adminmedia { alias /home/john/envs/john_prod/johntab/www/adminmedia; } } I still have the same error when using HTTP (while nothing is setup for HTTPS here)?? • permanent NAS-mount in Ubuntu - wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock

  My network drive shows up in the file browser, just like my external usb-harddrive. Moving, running and editing files works. Hovering over it shows smb://lacie-2big/nasdisk . BUT, when I want to save a file, the drive doesn't come up as an option. All I can see is my other places, including my usb-harddrive. I am a complete newbie but I am GUESSING that it has something to do with the mount not being a "real" mount but just a shortcut to the smb location. So I ran the tutorial at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MountWindowsSharesPermanently about how to "mount a network drive permanently". edited my fstab to //LaCie-2big/nasdisk /media/nasmount cifs guest,uid=1000,iocharset=utf8,codepage=unicode,unicode 0 0 and running sudo mount -a gave me the following error: mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on //LaCie-2big/nasdisk, missing codepage or helper program, or other error (for several filesystems (e.g. nfs, cifs) you might need a /sbin/mount. helper program) In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so Now thats a very helpful error message, BUT, before I go any further, I'd be really thankful if one of you could tell me if I'm even in the right ballpark, or if my actual need: to be able to download files (ie torrents) directly to the drive, can be possible as it is already. • can't backup to a NAS drive as offline schedule task

  I have seen this problem issue discussed in several forums including this one, but could not find a solution. On MS server 2003 I configured a Backup task, the target backup is on a NAS disc (Seagate BlackArmor NAS 110). The backup task is working well as a scheduled task or by a direct command, when I am logged on. It is not working when the user is offline (in this case - Administrator). I already tried the following actions: 1) addressing to the target as network drive (Y:location..), 2)Using UNC instead, 3) making the drive a domain member (the NAS admin S/W allows to define itself as a domain member) The result log message for 1 and 2 is: "The operation was not performed because the specified media cannot be found." The result log message for 3 is empty file. The schedule task "RUN" command is: C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntbackup.exe backup "@C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows NT\NTBackup\data\de-board.bks" /a /d "Set created 2/14/2010 at 5:10 PM" /v:yes /r:no /rs:no /hc:off /m incremental /j "de-board" /l:s /f "\10.0.0.8\public\Backups\IBMServer\de-board.bkf" 10.0.0.8 is the static IP of the NAS. "Run only if logged on" is NOT marked. Password of the administrator user is set. It is obvious that there is no access to the NAS when the user is logged-out. Do you have any idea how can I solve it? Thanks
