• Rhythmbox won't import or play flac files

  I have a new installation of 12.04 and I just copied over all my music to the ~/Music folder. Rhythmbox found all the mp3 and ogg files, but it refuses to import flac files. They simply do not appear in my music library. If I start Rhythmbox on the command line and try to import a folder that contains flac files, absolutely nothing happens. Nothing is imported; no error messages. I have all the dependencies for Rhythmbox installed, along with all the suggested and recommended packages. I can play a flac file with gst-launch-0.10 and gst-typefind-0.10 correctly identifies flac files as audo/x-flac. Why does Rhythmbox refuse to see flac files? What can I do to find out what is happening?

• Colleague unwilling to use unit tests "as it's more to code"

  A colleague is unwilling to use unit tests and instead opting for a quick test, pass it to the users, and if all is well it is published live. Needless to say some bugs do get through. I mentioned we should think about using unit tests - but she was all against it once it was realised more code would have to be written. This leaves me in the position of modifying something and not being sure the output is the same, especially as her code is spaghetti and I try to refactor it when I get a chance. So whats the best way forward for me?

• Where's Randall Hyde?

  This probably doesn't belong here, but I couldn't think of any other StackExchange site that would fit it. Quick question, what ever happened to Randall Hyde, author of The Art of Assembly, HLA, and other works? I ask this because I was just exploring some of the content on his website and a lot of it is now gone. His website was hosted on Apple's MobileMe. As of the writing of this question, Apple has closed off all MobileMe content a few days ago. Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Apple warn of this a year in advance? If so, then where's Randall Hyde? Come to think of it, all of the content on his website that I have seen is several years old. A lot of it is rather useful but unfinished.

• Gnome, Desktop, Gui, Menu Panel : Upgrading from 10.04 to 11.04

  After upgrading from ubuntu 10.04 to ubuntu 11.04, my gnome (Desktop) is completely messed up. Because I was hesitant to remove all the packages that were on y desktop. I chose to keep all the dependent files during my upgrade to Ubuntu 11.04. After the upgrade my GUI is simply not working. I think it's because of the conflicting files that I choose to keep while upgrading. I can launch nautilus manually,but still I don't have access to any of the menus available in ubuntu. Is there a way I can upgrade from 11.04 to 11.10 and restore my GUI. I tried to upgrade using aptitude, but it doesn't detect the latest ubuntu release, is there a way I can specify where to find the latest release as well get my GUI back ?

• How do I install Zimbra Desktop in an Ubuntu-friendly way?

  I'd like to install Zimbra Desktop but I'm worried about picking logical installation locations and how it will integrate with the Unity desktop. If it doesn't appear in the Messaging Menu there isn't much I can do about that, but what about the launcher? There doesn't seem to be PPA or similar resource. • Is remmina 1.0 in the standard universe repositories?

  I just noticed that the copy of remmina I have on my machine (Running ubuntu 12.04) is 9.99.1 (This is up to date according to apt). The remmina website says that the most recent version is version 1.0 which uses FreeRDP. I'd like to use FreeRDP instead of rdesktop because of the improved MS RemoteApp support. To cut to the chase, is version 1.0 of remmina in the repos, or do I have to install it manually? (I've had a quick browse but haven't found anything). Added:

• Eclipse does not want to use openjdk-7

  I am on a new installation of Ubuntu. I install all the updates, and then restart. I then install openjdk-7-jdk from apt, then I restart. Then I install eclipse-platform, eclipse-jdt, and eclipse-cdt. I then launch Eclipse. When I check the build path for my imported projects it decided that during the eclipse-platform installation to install openjdk-6. Okay, cool. The problem is that I can't use openjdk-7 AT ALL. There is no option to use it in the build path library manager. How can I change it so it uses openjdk-7? I tried reinstalling it already, didn't do anything. Just told me it was already installed. EDIT: Failed at the title, fixed.

  I have a quick question but I've been struggling to find the best solution: I have two java webapps and wordpress (php) that I need to serve through my Prod website: App #1 should be accessed when pointing to www.example.com/ (this would have other url too such as "www.example.com/book") App #2 should be accessed when pointing to www.example.com/manage Finally WordPress would be accessed at www.example.com/info How can I configure apache to serve all these three instances at the same time? • What's the format of Real World Performance Day?

  A question that has cropped a lot of late is "what's the format of Real World Performance Day?" Not an unreasonable question you might think. Sure enough, a quick check of the Independent Oracle User Group's website tells us a bit about the Real World Performance Day event, but no formal agenda? This was one of the questions I posed to Tom Kyte (one of the main presenters) in our recent podcast. Tom tells us that this isn't your traditional event where one speaker follows another with loads of slides. In fact, the Real World Performance Day features Tom and fellow Oracle performance experts - Andrew Holdsworth and Graham Wood - continuously on stage throughout the day. All three will be discussing database performance challenges and solutions from development, architectural design and management perspectives. • How should I make searching a relational database more efficient?

  This is in the scope of a web application. I have a database which has a few nested relations. There is a feature which depicts the history of a large chain of relations. It is essentially a data analysis feature. The issue is that in order to search, a large object graph must be loaded - the loading time for this object graph is not quick enough to be viable. The problem is that without loading the whole graph it makes searching from a single string nearly impossible. In order to search, explicit fields must be specified and the search data supplied. Is there a design pattern for exposing the data in a way which facilitates a single string search instead of having to explicitly define parameters?

• How can I fix 'no wubildr' error in WUBI on Windows 7?

  Good Evening All, I just got my HP Laptop Back from the factory and then I tried to install Ubuntu. It got through the whole installation, however, when I restarted and chose Ubuntu a quick screen flashes that says: Try (hd0,0) NTFS5: no wubildr Try (hd0,1) NTFS5: Then it quickly goes to the Boot Loader which I am presented with: Windows 7 (loader) (on /dev/sda1) Windows Vista (loader) (on /dev/sda2) Windows Vista (loader) (on /dev/sda3) Of course if I click Win 7 it'll go to the main screen to choose between Win 7 or Ubuntu, if I choose Vista, it'll come with an error of sorts. The strange thing is, I looked in my C:/ Drive and I see wubildr and wubilder.mbr Idk if it makes a difference but I am running a 64-bit processor. Installed the 64-bit desktop version and am presented with ultra-fail. I've gone to: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?s=4d54a8d3760f6fe805156524b7ab9acf&t=798283&page=1 But have had no luck.

• Only MKV format available in HandBrake

  I am running Ubuntu 14.04 LTS 32 bit. I have installed HandBrake rev5474 (i686), which I believe is the latest, and the Ubuntu Restricted Extras. I am able to play DVDs via VLC but when it comes to ripping them, so that I can back them up to my Twonky media server, I have issues. I launch HandBrake and find that the only format available for me to select is MKV. When I used to run Handbrake on this machine while I was running Ubuntu 13.10 and lower I had no issues and **lots of formats (including MP4 which is what I'm really after) but since reformating and installing 14.04 I've had this issue. Any help would be much appreciated.

• How to optimize collision detection

  I am developing a 2D Java Game with LibGDX. This is what it kinda looks like (simplified): The big black circle is the player, which you can move by tilting the smartphone. The red circles and blue rectangles are enemies, which will move from the right of the screen to the left. The player has to avoid crashing into them. Right now I am checking in the Game Loop every enemy against the player, whether they collide or not. This seems kinda inefficient to me, but I don't know how to improve it. I have tried the Quadtree approach, but it did not really work. The player could easily glitch through enemies and the collision was not detected. Unfortunately, I have destroyed the Quadtree implementation.   I am developing a tool that discovers network services enabled on host and writes short summary on them like this: init,1 +-- login,1560 -- +-- bash,1629 +-- nc,12137 -lup 50505 { :net = [ [0] "*:50505 IPv4 UDP " ], :fds = [ [0] "/root (cwd)", [1] "/", [2] "/bin/nc.traditional", [3] "/xochikit/ld_poison.so (stat: No such file or directory)", [4] "/dev/tty2", [5] "*:50505" ] } It proved to be very nice formatted and useful for quick discovery thanks to colors provided by the awesome_print gem. However, its output is just a text. One issue is that if I want to share it, I lose colors. I'd also like to fold and unfold parts of objects, quickly jump to specific processes and what not? Adding comments, for example. Thus I want something web-based. What is the best approach to implement features like these? I haven't worked with web interfaces before and I don't have much experience with Ruby.
