• Is there a purpose for using pull requests on my own repo if I am the only developper?

  So I got started with a real project of mine on GitHub and things are going pretty well and ideas are flowing a lot faster than I initially thought. In order to keep things organized, I setup some branches so I can develop different features separatly. Now when I push my branch to GitHub, I have that section where I have two buttons : Pull Request and Compare with the name of the branch I recently pushed to. I understand the purpose of the Compare button but I don't get why I would want to create a pull request on my own repo. Can someone explain me why I would do that? Is it useful to make pull request on my own repo if I am the only developper?

  A client of ours has a CMS driven Blog in his hotel site - he would like to use the blog to add depth top his site and add seo benefits relating to the blogs content. The current blog is a basic header / text field and doesn't contain any tagging / meta features. Unfortunately we dont have a .net developer in our team to alter the existing blog and add meta / tagging and there isn't budget to hire one - so I considered using a Tumblr blog - setting it up externally - giving it a blog.hotelname.com address and feeding it into the existing page via tumblrs js - which basically does a document.write into the page - which we can style. I understand from a previous post (Poor CMS blog vs Tumblr embed as a general rule most search engines ignore JS created content - but will the above approach act as an improvement on the existing system for now - as the blog will be setup externally with its own url and also feed into the existing site?   I'm working a side project and I can't always be on "my" machine to code/deploy the web application. I am aware of various cloud IDEs (e.g., Cloud 9 IDE) and independent Django/Flask etc., hosting services (e.g., Heroku). What is the best way to completely shift my development/deployment environment to the cloud so that I can code/deploy from anywhere? I don't mind using paid services but I'm not sure which cloud IDEs play nice with which hosting services. Has anyone tried this setup before? What has or hasn't worked? I want to minimize the manual intervention in 'connecting the two services' as much as possible. I'm going to be using Django, MySQL and Redis for the web-app

• OpenStack: How to make Cloudify use the floating IP instead of the fixed one?

  I have a problem with Cloudify (both 2.5 and 2.6-rc release). I have an All-In-One Openstack 2013.1.1 setup and I'm trying to use Cloudify to bootstrap a cirros 0.3.1 vm. My quantum configuration is: pool of fixed ip (10.0.0.0/24) for vm management; pool of floating ip (192.168.1.170-190) taken from 192.168.1.1/24 (my lan) When I deploy a vm first, an ip from 10.0.0.0/24 is given (I cannot reach it from my PCs because it is only for vm management) and then I associate a floating ip with which I can ping (and ssh) the deployed machine. The problem is when I do: bootstrap-cloud openstack because Cloudify stay forever into "attempting to access management vm 10.0.0.3" and this is due to the fact that 10.0.0.3 is not reachable. What can I do to get Cloudify take the floating ip instead of the fixed one?

• How do I get VirtualBox to work?

  I can't seem to make VirtualBox to work, I've installed it and reinstalled by 3 ways: Terminal, Ubuntu Software Center and VirtualBox's official web site installation and I keep getting the same kernel error. I found a "solution" to this problem by typing in terminal: sudo apt-get install virtualbox-dkms But it tells my that "virtualbox-dkms is already the newest version". Then I typed in terminal what the error tells me: sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup but then I tells me that DKMS is actually NOT installed (which is a contradiction). If anyone has encountered the same problem and actually solved it please tell me and explain me step by step 'cause I'm new to Linux.

• How do I run Conkeror in Emacs?

  I have been using emacs for about 3 months, and have been amazed by how much improved my interactions with my computer are. I now use eshell rather than a separate terminal, and the last thing I still need to leave my emacs environment for is for my web browser. I have been reading up on Conkeror, and it seems almost ideal (emacs keybindings, no need to use the mouse etc.) but it runs in a separate window. If it could be run within emacs, it would mean that I would never really have to have interaction with the actual OS, which would be good for someone who is forced to rotate between linux, mac and windows (i.e. me). I understand that it couldn't be run from emacs in -nw mode, but would it be possible (or likely) that Conkeror could be setup to run within an emacs window? Note: - I've tried w3m and didn't really like it

• Google Analytics Campaigns Not Tracking E-Commerce

  I am running email campaigns via MailChimp and tracking the success of my campaigns via Google Analytics. I can successfully see data being tracked for: Reporting > Conversions > Ecommerce (Receiving Data) Reporting > Traffic Sources > Campaigns (Receiving Data) However, I am not receiving any Ecommerce data for the individual campaigns: Reporting > Traffic Sources > Campaigns > Ecommerce (No data) So I see data like: Visits: 18,501 Revenue: $0.00 Everything I have read leads me to believe this should just "work" if Ecommerce is setup. Is there some additional action I need to take for this work? Any help would be appreciated!

• Unrecognized Display

  I just installed a fresh copy of Ubuntu 12.04, and before I installed drivers, I was able to get my two monitor setup working just fine. However, after updating all my drivers and installing all the recommended software, my second display is no longer detected. My main display is called "Laptop" (which it was detected as the monitor name previously), but it is the only display listed. I tried to detect displays, nothing happened. The monitor is plugged in, and should be working fine - after all, it just was. How can I fix the problem of Ubuntu not listing my second monitor in the display settings?

• How can I access profile fields with a % variable in Drupal Actions?

  I have an action setup in drupal to e-mail me when a new user registers for the site. Right now it is only telling me their user name (%username). Is there a variable that can access added fields so I can get their real name (First Last), or another way to add this info to the action message? So instead of my new user action having a message like: "%username created an account" - "jschmoe created and account" I could have: "%first_name %last_name (%username) created an account" - "Joe Schmoe (jschmoe) created an account". I'm using Content Profile module for the first and last name fields, though have few enough users at the moment that I could switch to Profile module fields.

• keyboard shortcut to switch focus between separate X screens?

  I'm using XFCE on a dual monitor setup, with Xorg configured to separate X screens (neither twinview nor cinerama is working on GF470 with latest nvidia drivers). I'm not using xrandr. Suppose I have firefox running on one screen (:0.0) and thunderbird on the other (:0.1). When I want to switch focus from thunderbird to firefox, I need to move my mouse pointer to the firefox window and click (alt-tab switches between windows on a single screen only). Is there any keyboard shortcut for switching focus between screens?

• Problem connecting to Webmin

  I have installed Webmin with the view to try an understand what is all running. Yesterday I had it setup with login and password, but today when I try to get access to the server with: https://ubuntu:10000/ in order to login, I get unable to connect, the page does not load. Seems like there is no connection. I tried http://localhost:10000 and https://localhost:10000 They both returned the same unable to connect response. I am not sure of what it means to turn https on. ... the https and http is not showing. Am I going about this the wrong way?

• Advice on how to understand in general and in practice IT Infrastructure

  My IT knowledge resides mainly in SW development. I have just some basic know how about networks. On the net I tried to get information and read books in order to better understand the overall IT infrastrcuture, but all the sources I found are too generic or, mainly, too detailed in just one aspect, making me lost. Could anyone suggest some books or web resources as good compromise in details? My goal would be able to understand the network issues and security threats when, for example, two remote system have to be setup and put in connection each other. Considering this scenario there are several aspects to consider: firewalls, intranet/internet interconnections, certificates for httpS, etc. The argument is quite wide, therefore I was looking for something that might help to start to understand this subject without going too deep in details (Computer Networks from A.Tanenbaum is a wonderful milestone, but way too specific for my scope).   I've recently ditched windows 7 for Ubuntu 11.10 64bit... I'm a total novice and was wondering do I need to make any changes to the firewall?. I read somewhere that the built in firewall doesn't need touching...but a friend says he uses firestarter,I'd be really grateful if someone could advise me weather to just leave well alone or if I should make certain changes,I'll be doing a lot of web browsing and also proberly a bit of online banking to. Infact this is one of the reasons I've switched to Linux as I was told its much more secure than windows... I just want my comp to be setup in a way that I can access my bank account safely and not knowing what to do about the firewall or how to configure it is off putting... Also do I need an antivirus?..I know bitdefender and eset do a free Linux scanner but again I've heard there not really needed. • No voice on front headphone port.

  I have a strange problem. It just happen recently, when I accidentally unplug my headphone. But I unplugged it before and nothing happen. Basically now, when I use my headphone through front jack, when playing videos, I can't hear voice. Only background music. Using kde sound setup, pressing front left and front right test button, result in a mono sound. No distinction between right and left. This only happen with front jack. Rear jack is working fine.

  I've got a dual-monitor setup, with the monitors configured through the "Nvidia X Server Settings" application. In the Ubuntu Display settings, the monitors show up as one extra-wide monitor labelled "Laptop". Until now, this really hasn't been a problem, but now I'm trying to set up a Wacom tablet. The Ubuntu tablet settings allow the tablet to be mapped to a specific monitor, but since the OS "thinks" that I have only one monitor, I can only map the tablet to both of them. This is a problem. Is there any way to have Ubuntu recognize the monitors separately?

  I'm trying to record audio and video from a Kinect using avconv but I seem to have trouble specifying the right options. avconv -f video4linux2 -video_size 640x480 -c:v h264 -c:a ac3 -i /dev/video1 test.mp4 results in: avconv: /build/buildd/libav-extra-0.8.3ubuntu0.12.04.1/libav/libavutil/mathematics.c:79: av_rescale_rnd: Assertion `c > 0' failed. Aborted (core dumped) Cheese is perfectly happy recording the audio and video from the Kinect, so it's not a setup issue. For added fun, I also need to display the video at the same time.

• Application starts as Terminal but not as a Desktop entry

  I just installed SQL Anywhere 12 and can start Sybase Central from the terminal with the command line below without errors: /opt/sqlanywhere12/bin32/scjview However, when I try to start it from a desktop entry I am receiving two error messages that could be something incorrectly defined in the desktop below: #!/usr/bin/env xdg-open [Desktop Entry] Version=1.0 Type=Application Terminal=false Icon[en_US]=gnome-panel-launcher Name[en_US]=Sybase Central Exec=/opt/sqlanywhere12/bin32/scjview Comment[en_US]= Name=Sybase Central Comment= Icon=gnome-panel-launcher Here are the error messages: (unable to post the error images) cannot find libsyblib610_r.so cannot find libulscutil12.so Since the application can be successfully started from a terminal window I was wondering how I could have it setup as a desktop entry as well.

• How can I fix latency problems for car game?

  Basically I'm trying to make a online car racing game for IOS using Game Center real time multiplayer. I have setup a timer that sends data every 0.02 seconds to the other player with the current position and current angle. However sometimes, it will take LONGER then these 0.02 seconds for the package to be sent and then received. In this case i have implemented a method that "calculate" what the next position should be if no position is received based on the last position and angle. However, when the data then receives for let say 0.04 seconds after, it will change back to the last position, which will result in the car "jumping" back and lag. And If i just keep ignoring the data it will never take any input from the other user. Is their any way to prevent this? I suppose this needs to be fixed with some client-sided algorithm.

  I use a Nvidia Quadro NVS 290/PCIe/SSE2 at work with dual monitor setup. Since 11.10 things has gone downwards with performance. But now with 12.04 performance is even worse, and I can agree that the 290 is old and puny. So when I look what low profile cards I can get to my computer today, the choice it Radeon HD 6570 or NVIDIA Quadro 600. I have always used Nvidia on linux beq I think that historically their drivers worked better. But which one do you recommend today on 12.04 and Unity3d? -- Regards Falk

  Go ahead, laugh. I forgot to remove the default admin/admin account on my blog. SOmebody got in and has replaced my homepage with some internet graffiti. I've used .htaccess to replace the page with a 403 error, but no matter what I do, my wordpress homepage is this hacker thing. How can I setup my server so that ONLY MYSELF can view it while I'm fixing this via .htaccess? What steps should I take to eradicate them from my server? If I delete the ENTIRE website and change all the passwords, is he completely gone? Thanks.

• Can I use a desktop as a network server?

  Pardon me if I'm asking the wrong question. But I am a newbie in networking and I'm not sure what direction to go on this. I have just setup an Ubuntu Desktop. I am planning to convert it to a network server without losing the GUI interface (again, I'm a newbie) and use it to manage and monitor user access to a network with a small number of network terminals all running on Windows. My purpose is to use the new server to filter sites accessed by each terminals, monitor sites being visited by employees and grant access to both group and user-specific folders based on their IP address. Is this possible? What server software do I need to install? How do I structure the hardware? (I have a router, a hub, the Ubuntu server and the network terminals) How do I assign privileges to users and monitor them at the same time? Thank you in advance for your replies.
