  Hi, I am new to PHP (Have good j2EE and ASP .net experience) and now want to kick start developing a simple website (A database connection and simple inserts is the max technical stuff i plan right now). I have signed up at zymic for a free hosting (MySql included). Now please suggest me: the available IDEs for developing on PHP on windows OS and any beginner level resources that you have come across, for a .net/java guy which may help me to quickly figure out the differences would you advice me to go for frameworks like joomla etc as a beginner? or is it better i start exploring these after im familiar with PHP?   Here are the notes for today’s release: Added a progress indicator when saving issues. Added support for viewing CodePlex RSS feeds in Chrome. Deployed several bug fixes: Fixed an issue where the back button on Internet Explorer was not working as intended when browsing code. Fixed an issue where long commit comments would push the source control info box outside of the boundaries of the page. Fixed an issue where Internet Explorer users were not able to widen the frame of the source code browser until a file was selected. Fixed an issue where opening a source code file directly from a URL in Internet Explorer would cause the source code tree to be collapsed. Fixed an issue where adding a code snippet with long lines of text to a discussion thread using Internet Explorer would needlessly display a vertical scrollbar, limiting the amount of code visible. Fixed an issue where tabbing through some links would render them invisible. We deprecated support for embedding PreEmptive analytics statistics on the project statistics page. • Amnesic Environment

  My team is looking for a technical term which may or may not exist. We are trying to describe an environment, such as a database, which has been built up over time with little or documentation about the change process that has gone into it. Generally these are legacy systems who's original developers have long since moved on and they are in such a tangled and unmanageable state that the only way to recreate the environment, say for testing purposes, is to copy it and do your best guess at re-configuring it for its new purpose. So far the best term we have come up with is Amnesic, such as "setting up the new test environment is going to be a challenge because it is an amnesic db." However, we are still not quite happy with the term and were wondering if a better and/or more accepted term for this situation exists.

• What is the Ubuntu equivalent of the Windows programs Belarc or PC Wizard?

  I provide technical support for several high schools in Spain and I have been building up a inventory of the schools machines. On the windows only computers I normally run PC Wizard to quickly get a good overview of the machines hardware, software and network settings. Is there an equivalent tool preferable with a GUI and an export option to html or pdf in Ubuntu. I have tried a few options such as: Gnomes gconf-editor hardinfo (GUI) lshw (CLI) I'm just looking for an all in one application that builds a detailed profile of the installed software, hardware and network setting of a particular machine. I have found Sysinfo which is quite good, it displays the most important hardware info and allows you to save it to a text file with a neat GUI. I'm still looking for a more complete solution but it's a good start.

• How do I forward/redirect a website from a folder in a subdomain to another server?

  I have a client with a site at: subdomain.theirdomain.com/folder It's a 50Gb gallery site that i've now cloned and have locally in MAMP. Once i've made some changes to it I need to host it at alternative physical server/hosting (I intend using a dedicated server I have access to with a technical domain name currently). However, the client would ideally like to keep the existing URL as it has been used extensively in marketing. I've done HTTP redirects and forwards and 301 redirects in the past, but I'm not sure how or even if I can do what the client wants. How can I achieve this, possibly using .htaccess and DNS entries? Caveats: I can't have the site at a 3rd party domain and the client isn't able/allowed to register any additional domains:

• A look at an example of anti-spam algorithm

  What is a good approach to an anti-spam algorithm for a website similar to reddit? Their anti-spam algorithm seems awfully broken (banning on words in the title and doing a horrible job for that matter). Considering a post spam because it has the word 'spam' in the title is really not a wise choice. Anyway, how can one approach such problem ? Are there any tools that help in such cases? Also, what are the /technical/ reasons behind reddit's choice not using reCAPTCHA on every post submission? It seems like a much better solution than what they have right now. Since reddit is basically a community-driven website why not give such power to the communities' trusted members?

• Java on easypeasy

  I have successfully installed easypeasy in an Asus EeePC. I want to use the authoring programm Hot Potatoes, which is/uses a Java application (sorry for my poor technical vocabulary). It is installed and extracted. I have found guidelines about how to use it here (it is in German but the instructions for the terminal are clear). But it seems I cannot install any Java package. I have tried all the packages the terminal says are available and this is what terminal says: "Unable to find the package". In ubuntu I use Hot Potatoes with wine, but I cannot install it in the Asus, so I need to run it with java. Thanks for your help.

• Metro-style / iPhone apps development too demanding for newbie developers? [closed]

  Both Metro-style and iPhone app require approval and publishing to app store. And they focus most on user interface and the quality of the software. Developers must deal with technical aspects, such as async programming (no UI blocking), no console program (must design a UI that cope with "Standard"), no CPU hungry (pause app if deactivated), need to study the permission matrix (not full access right), and more ... A newbie is not familiar with threading and synchronization. Do you thick they are too demanding for newbie developers? Can you give more examples how demanding it is?

  Here are the notes for this week’s release: Pull Requests We’ve moved the pull request creation UI from a modal dialog to a full page to make room for more context on what you’re sending with your pull request. In this week’s changes, you’ll see the list of commits; look for diffs to appear in the coming weeks. Corrected several issues where the line that had comments associated was not being properly differentiated in the code snippet previews on pull request discussions. Corrected an issue where pull request line comments would not appear to be associated with the proper line of code. Fixed an issue where accepting pull requests was not working properly.   Here are the notes for this week’s release: Pull Requests We’ve added the ability to see the snippets of code where a user commented inline in the discussion of pull requests. You can also add another line comment directly from the discussion area, rather than navigating to the code diff viewer. Note that there’s currently a known issue where the line associated with the comment isn’t being properly differentiated for existing pull requests (the line in the middle of each diff preview should be bolded). Apologies for the inconvenience! As part of this work, we also took some time to clean up our diff viewer UI to remove the dots and introduce a new color scheme where green is used for added lines. Bug Fixes Fixed an issue affecting the ability to assign pull requests. Fixed an issue where managing various team resources for a project was not working in Chrome or Firefox. • Is there such a concept as "pseudo implementation" in software development?

  I'm looking for a label to describe the practice of using human-based computation methods or other means of "faking" an algorithm for the sake of getting a product or demo off the ground quickly without spending the time to develop an technical/scalable/analytical solution? Eg: using Amazon Turk to count the number of empty tables in a restaurant. I'm also looking to learn more about this subject, but not sure what to search for. Human-based computation is only one method, I'm interested in the general idea of pseudo-implementation. Any ideas, recommended reading? Thanks

• Very original V&V explanation (Bohm) - I cannot understand its point

  Hopefully my last thread about V&V as I found the B.Boehm is text which I just do not understand well (likely my technical English is not that good). http://csse.usc.edu/csse/TECHRPTS/1979/usccse79-501/usccse79-501.pdf Basically he says that verification is about checking that products derived from requirments baseline must correspond to it and that deviation leads only to changes in these derived products (design, code). But he says it begins with design and ends with acceptance tests (you can check the V model inside). The thing is, I have accepted ISO12207 in terms of all testing is validation, yet it does not make any sense here. In order to be sure the product complies with requirements (acceptance test) I need to test it. Also it says that validation problems means that requirements are bad and needs to be changed - which does not happen with testing that testers do, who just checks correspondence with requirements.

• Separate parts of a game engine [on hold]

  I'm pretty new in developing videogames. By now I only used SDL with C/C++ to create games. I'm currently learning OpenGL and I realized that to be fluid and easy to maintain the code must be logically separated. Since I want to use OpenGLES on iOS and Android I was wondering how the engine must be imagined in a technical way, some questions came up: Do I have to separate input/update functions from draw functions in different threads? Is there only one proper way to think a game engine/loop? What kind of assets should I use to create a 3D game using openGl ES to get better performance?
