• DualLayout OpenSourceFood demo site installation instructions

  We released DualLayout which enables advanced web design with the power of SharePoint. DualLayout and a demo site can be downloaded from the DualLayout product page. This blogpost contains detailed instructions on installing the demo site. The demo site is based on the site http://opensourcefood.com. The demo site requires internet access because it still links to pages and resources of the real site. Execute the following steps to install the demo site: Copy the OpenSourceFoodDemo.zip file to your SharePoint Server 2010 Make sure that the zip file in “unblocked”, otherwise files are assumed from other computer (right-click on zip file, press “Unblock” button if available) Unzip the OpenSourceFoodDemo.zip to a folder of your choice (c:\OpenSourceFoodDemo) Open the SharePoint  Start->Microsoft SharePoint 2010 Products->SharePoint 2010 Management Shell Change directory to the unzip folder (cd c:\OpenSourceFoodDemo) Start install script: .\InstallDemoSite.ps1 Answer the questions, default values in most cases ok. A little guidance: Question: Give credentials for the account that will be used for the application pool Answer: use for example same account as used for the application pool of your SharePoint site (lookup in IIS Manager) Question: Give credentials for the account that will be used for the application pool Answer: Use same account you are currently logged in with The demo site is made available through a backup and restore. The SharePoint Server 2010 installation must be patched to a level equal or higher to the update level on the SharePoint Server used to create the backup. • Need advice for approach for a web-based app that loads excel worksheet but exposes only the charts

  I'm looking for suggestions on the Visual Studio approach to take for a web application that is in the conceptual stage. My environment has a lot of tools: Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard 64bit Visual Studio 2010 Professional Edition Sharepoint 2010 Server Enterprise Edition SQL Server 2008 R2 Office 2010 Professional I know I will need this app to retrieve data from a database (or a web service - not sure exactly at this point). The data needs to be placed in an Excel workbook dynamically. The app will need to have a nice user interface (standard web controls - perhaps with some Javascript effects). The Excel ribbon and worksheet grid will need to be hidden. Some web control(s) will cause the Excel chart(s) to be rendered. I am thinking this sounds like Visual Studio Tools for Office (VSTO) so as to leverage .Net and hide Excel. Can you offer suggestions regarding: One ASP.Net Web App Project One Class Library Project for Excel or perhaps which one of the several different Excel 2010 project types (addin, template, document) Would Excel Services for Sharepoint be useful (or required) ? I am feeling a little overwhelmed with so many choices at this early stage of conceptualizing the app. Can you suggest some ideas for this sort of thing? Also, I am a bit more experienced with C# but I've read VB.Net is better for work with the Excel object model. What are general advises with regard to tool choice and overall approach tradeoffs?

  I've set a samba server that seems to work, all shares are seemingly exported as readonly, however. The machine is called "lx". (Who may access it). As mentioned, accessing the share from smbclient results in this NT_STATUS_MEDIA_WRITE_PROTECTED . Accessing it from windows shows ACLs that look correct (The user may write) - but it does not work, I can only read files not write. • What would happen if I did a "Boot to VHD" to a VHD that was configured to run under Hyper-V?

  Microsoft has a Hyper-V based VM I'm interested in running, however, I don't have access to a Windows Server 2008 machine to try it on, only a Windows 7 Pro x64 machine (Windows 7 does not support Hyper-V). This is the VM in question: This download contains three Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 Hyper-V Virtual Machine set for evaluating and demonstrating Office 2010, SharePoint 2010 and Project Server 2010. 2010 Information Worker Demonstration and Evaluation Virtual Machine (SP1) http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=27417 I came across a somewhat relevant article from Scott Hanselman: Less Virtual, More Machine - Windows 7 and the magic of Boot to VHD: http://www.hanselman.com/blog/LessVirtualMoreMachineWindows7AndTheMagicOfBootToVHD.aspx I realize other options are to convert this VM to a VMWare compatible VM or some of the options to run it under VirtualBox. But instead of those routes, I'm wondering: What would happen if I tried to go the "Boot to VHD" route using this Hyper-V VHD? Is it possible that during the boot process, Windows would simply notice that hardware had changed and adjust accordingly, installing the appropriate drivers and continuing on without a hitch?

  I have a 500GB external drive. It had two partitions, each around 250GB. I removed the first partition. I'd like to move the 2nd to the left, so it consumes 100% of the drive. • SharePoint: UI for ordering list items

  SharePoint list items have in the the base Item template a field named Order. This field is not shown by default. SharePoint 2007, 2010 and 2013 have a possibility to specify the order in a UI, using the _layouts page: {SiteUrl}/_layouts/Reorder.aspx?List={ListId} In SharePoint 2010 and 2013 it is possible to add a custom action to a list. It is possible to add a custom action to order list items as follows (SharePoint 2010 description): Open SharePoint Designer 2010 Navigate to a list Select Custom Actions > List Item Menu Fill in the dialog box: Open List Settings > Advanced Settings > Content Types, and set Allow management of content types to No  On List Settings select Column Ordering This results in the following UI in the browser: Selecting the custom Order Items action (under List Tools > Items) results in: You can change your custom action in SharePoint designer. On the list screen in the bottom right corner you can find the custom action: We now need to modify the view to include the order by adding the Order field to the view, and sorting on the Order field. Problem is that the Order field is hidden. It is possible to modify the schema of the Order field to set the Hidden attribute to FALSE. If we don’t want to write code to do it and still get the required result it is also possible to modify the view through SharePoint Designer: Modify the code of the view: This results in: Note that if you change the view through the web UI these changes are partly lost. If this is a problem modify the Order field schema for the list.

  Windows update fails to install the updates below. How do I fix this, I've installed the fix it application Microsoft recommends but it still fails. Any ideas how to fix this? • Recurring Apache 2.0.52 error on CentOS 4 - 'could not create `rewrite_log_lock`'

This is non-ideal :-\ Restarting httpd does not clear the error. df indicates I have 20+ gigs free, and top and free both report 800+ megs (or 1.2 gigs) > df -h Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/simfs 40G 18G 23G 44% / # > free total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 1474560 300832 1173728 0 0 0 -/+ buffers/cache: 300832 1173728 Any ideas on why this would recur, and how to prevent/fix it?

• Help looking before I leap! I need expert guidance...

  27" iMac running win7 under bootcamp (slick! ). I have Access 2003 program with files linked through ODBC used by 4 installations (all with Access 2003 installed). I want to buy Access 2010 and try it under virtual PC (under Bootcamp). Will it work (since I have to install the ODBC drivers)? If I decide after this trial that I like what it does, can I then install it under the Windows 7 bootcamp partition (with or without uninstalling the virtual PC) without using up the 2nd allowed installation? Also, I see that MS allows an Office Pro 2010 trial download good for 60 days. Would this work in Windows 7 Virtual PC and would it be a better way to go, followed by a legitimate purchase of Access 2010 for the Windows 7? This is not an Access programming question--I realize there may be some tweaks necessary in the program to run it under 2010 and I can handle that part.

• Blog Rebranding

  I have been spending more and more time on learning as much as I can on Agile Development and also have been fairly immersed in rolling out TFS 2010 in our environment.  I feel like it is time to talk about some of my experiences.  With that, I am rebranding my blog to focus on these topics.  I am going to start with a bunch of blogs on the process I have gone through getting TFS 2010 configured for our development teams. Last week, Brian Harry was in our office and gave a great talk on the improved tools in TFS 2010 and how Microsoft uses the tools internally.  I followed that up with a high-level overview of the improved out of the box process templates and the process to customize them.  I am definitely very excited about the new features in 2010 and hopefully will keep up my motivation to blog about it.  I am writing my first post right now about the process I went through to build a task progress report based on the user story progress report in the MSF for Agile Development template.  Stay tunedDid you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • Community TFS Build Manager available for Visual Studio 2012 RC

  I finally got around to push out a version of the Community TFS Build Manager that is compatible with Visual Studio 2012 RC. Unfortunately I had to do this as a separate extension, it references different versions of the TFS assemblies and also some properties and methods that the 2010 version uses are now obsolete in the TFS 2012 API. To download it, just open the Extension Manager, select Online and search for TFS Build:   You can also download it from this link: http://visualstudiogallery.msdn.microsoft.com/cfdb84b4-285e-4eeb-9fa9-dad9bfe2cd10 The functionality is identical to the 2010 version, the only difference is that you can’t start it from the Team Explorer Builds node (since the TE has been completely rewritten and the extension API’s are not yet published). So, to start it you must use the Tools menu: We will continue shipping updates to both versions in the future, as long as it functionality that is compatible with both TFS 2010 and TFS 2012. You might also note that the color scheme used for the build manager doesn’t look as good with the VS2012 theme….   Hope you will enjoy the tool in Visual Studio 2012 as well.   I have multiple versions of Excel installed. Excel 2010, 2007 and 2003. I have them installed on one hard drive with Windows 7 Ultimate as the OS. When I double-click on an XLS file, Excel 2007 opens. I would like Excel 2010 to open. I read and followed the instructions to go to the Control Panel at "Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Default Programs" and set the default programs. I changed the default to the physical EXE for Excel 2010 at the proper folder that it is installed. When I double-click on the XLS files, Excel 2007 still opens. So I tried to change it to Excel 2003 just to see if it changed to that and it still opens Excel 2007. What am I missing? I would really like the file extension to open Excel 2010, but can not seem to do that.

• Ruby Rails Mongrel Sever failing to serve OXS1.6

  Hi there I'm fairly new to Rails and the Mac, and doing my first deploy... I'm trying to set up my rails app on a brand new Apple mini-server running OXS1.6 (Snow Leopard). It is currently running fine on my new iMac i7 (same OS). I start mongrel with this command: mongrel_rails start -e production -p 3000 -d -a 127.0.0.1 --debug And it starts giving this output in the log/mongrel.log ** Daemonized, any open files are closed. Look at log/mongrel.pid and log/mongrel.log for info. ** Starting Mongrel listening at 127.0.0.1:3000 ** Installing debugging prefixed filters. My gems are all the same versions between machines and so is the app code; and there are no clues I can see in any of the mongrel_debug logs, except that rails.log on the mac mini-server and the iMac are different.
