• JQUERY CYCLE - Can I add page links to anchors assigned to Cycle's pager?

  Hello everyone. Seems I've outdone myself. All the while I was creating this pretty little 'latest news' widget that fades on mouseover of each anchor. Then my colleague says, "Hey, Chris, these links don't work" ...oops. I would like to find out if I can have these anchors take the user to the relvent page on click. Currently Cycle is set to do its hocus pocus on mouseover. • What is the best way to set up a PHP development environment on a Mac?

  When I do PHP, I use XAMPP to set up a development environment on Windows, then upload to Linux servers, works very well. I'm now passing on a PHP project to a person who has a Mac so he needs a local PHP dev environment. I noticed XAMPP has a version for Mac which I will recommend. But knowing that Mac is always a bit different, has anyone used any other easy PHP environment setup tool for the Mac, or I could even imagine that Mac solves this issue more elegantly by e.g. having a web server ready to go upon first boot etc. What is the best way to set up a PHP development environment on a Mac?

• Is there a Maven plugin to generate AS3 classes from Java for BlazeDS ?

  Hi, I'm looking for a maven plugin that would generate ActionScript3 classes from Java classes in order to access them by object remoting. I've seen FlexMojo but it uses the GraniteDS generator wich create some problems when it comes to map Enum objects (wich can be fix through a workaround that is describe here : http://dev.c-ware.de/confluence/display/PUBLIC/Flexmojos+generated+AS3+model+with+Enum+support+using+BlazeDS?focusedCommentId=7634946&#comment-7634946 if you've googled your way here this might be useful) when working with BlazeDS. Everything that i found so far are people who explain how to generate VO classes on flex side using Flash Builder 4, but this solution can not be used in an industrial developpement environnement. • SQL Server Upgrade 'Developer > Enterprise'

  Hey guys, My company purchased Visual Studio Pro 2008 last year, which had a 'free' copy of SQL Server Developer, which I have been using for development. We are wanting to upgrade the copy of developer edition to enterprise (As we now want to use the server as a production server), and have purchased the licenses for this. Now... Morally we're in the clear... However does this comply with MS licensing T&C's? We have Developer installed how we want it, and don't really want to uninstall SQL Server Dev just to install SQL Server Ent. Is there a way to transfer the license key to our Enterprise key without having to reinstall? Thanks, JD

• realistically speaking, could a seasoned .net developer enter the java space and land a job?

  I've been working with .net since 2001, and I am considering making a move into the java space. I find that java has so many more mature tools (hibernate is more mature, spring framework, established patters/designs, containers, distributed cache frameworks, etc etc.) I have been doing .net, and just recently I have been getting into design patterns, ORMS, etc. and it just seems the .net side of things are not as mature. Yes the trend going forward looks great as more and more are getting into this design strategy etc. I don't want this to get into a flame war, but I read that its not about the framework/stack, but the tools around it are what make the difference. And to me Java seems to be the winner. Anyhow, the real question here is, could I realistically get into shape in 6 months? i.e. Someone would consider hiring me, and not at a junior dev pay rate? Is this a bad idea?

• Django BigInteger auto-increment field as primary key?

  Hi all, I'm currently building a project which involves a lot of collective intelligence. Every user visiting the web site gets created a unique profile and their data is later used to calculate best matches for themselves and other users. By default, Django creates an INT(11) id field to handle models primary keys. I'm concerned with this being overflown very quickly (i.e. ~2.4b devices visiting the page without prior cookie set up). How can I change it to be represented as BIGINT in MySQL and long() inside Django itself? I've found I could do the following (http://docs.djangoproject.com/en/dev/ref/models/fields/#bigintegerfield): class MyProfile(models.Model): id = BigIntegerField(primary_key=True) But is there a way to make it autoincrement, like usual id fields? Additionally, can I make it unsigned so that I get more space to fill in? Thanks!

  One trend I see in the awesome developers I've met, is that they devote inordinate amounts of time to coding at the expense of (usually) their health. Personally, I also find it hard to motivate myself to keep healthy. Every now and again, I meet a fantastic coder who has it clocked; they are up to date with the latest dev news, have time to read about good programming practices, and to finish it off, have happy wives/husbands and families. How do you guys/gals manage it in the short 24 hours a day that we all have?

• Which offer to pick?

  OK. This is kinda silly, but I'd really like to hear what you guys say. Here is the thing: I used to be an php developer and started looking for jobs 3 weeks ago and now I got 2 offers at hand. If I took the first one what I do would be 100% in PHP - simply dev works on a ecommerce project. If I go with the second one, the projects would be in python which I didn't have too much experiences on and is kinda exited about the new stuff I'm going to learn. But wait, the first offer gives more money(1k plus) and that's why I'm still hesitating and troubling you guys.) If you were me, which one would you pick? I know there could be other factors to be considered like 'which position is closer to your home so you could take good care of your dog', well let's forget about those things for now.

• Django queries: Count number of objects with FK to model instance

  This should be easy but for some reason I'm having trouble finding it. I have the following: App(models.Model): ... Release(models.Model): date = models.DateTimeField() App = models.ForeignKey(App) ... How can I query for all App objects that have at least one Release? I started typing: App.objects.all().annotate(release_count=Count('??????')).filter(release_count__gt=0) Which won't work because Count doesn't span relationships, at least as far as I can tell. BONUS: Ultimately, I'd also like to be able to sort Apps by latest release date. I'm thinking of caching the latest release date in the app to make this a little easier (and cheaper), and updating it in the Release model's save method, unless of course there is a better way. Edit: I'm using Django 1.1 - not averse to migrating to dev in anticipation of 1.2 if there is a compelling reason though.

• Alternative to udev functionality on OSX

  Let's say i have 3 smtp appenders in same log4net file whose names are: <appender name = "emailDevelopment".. /> <appender name = "emailBeta".. /> <appender name = "emailProduction".. /> Let's say i have 3 different servers(Dev, Beta, Production). Depending upon the server, i want to fire the log. In case of Development server, it would fire log from "emailDevelopment". I have a system variable in each server named "ApplicationEnvironment" whose value is Development, Beta, Production based on the server names. Now is there anyway i can setup root in log4net so that it fires email depending upon the server name. <root> <priority value="ALL" /> <appender-ref ref="email<environment name from whose appender should be used>" /> </root>

• How to use CFUUID, can CFUUID be traced back to a unique individual. security/privacy

  Hi, i an new to iphone Dev and the concept of CFUUID, so thought i should ask, before i start implementing it. so the string returned by CFUUID is it really unique or can it be traced back to a unique individual. meaning lets say, i generate a CFUUID object and convert it to string(using the methods provided) , and then this info is used in my app or stored on a server database. and how unique is it, i mean is their a chance it can be similar to one generated on some other device. is it a good idea to use this info freely or are their some security/privacy aspects that i am not thinking about here. any help is greatly appreciated thanks

• Random blank pages on Safari when developing webapp

  Hey guys, I've been experiencing a safari problem while building a web application. The screen goes completely blank (white) and refreshing won't help. Going to another page on the site gives the same problem. Then magically, after a little while, everything goes back to normal and pages are rendered correctly! This started happening around the same time that I SUSPECT my hosting automatically upgraded from PHP 5.2.x to 5.3 (all of a sudden, we got 'deprecated function' errors and the error settings and handling were unchanged) I also have to mention that this doesn't happen in our dev environment (PHP 5.2.9, Apache 2) Settings Safari 4.0.2 and the latest one (don't know the version) Server side: PHP 5.3, MySQL 5.0.90, Apache is cPanel Easy Apache v3.2.0 Does anyone know why this is happening at all, or how to fix it? I appreciate any help or pointers you might have. Thanks!

  Hi guys, I just posted a similar question, but deleted it because I realized I was working with an old file...doh! I am just trying to get my XAMPP setup working for me. I have a live site that navigates to a login page at http://www.monkeycalendar.com/arvindkt/login.php That login page includes a root.php file that is found at http://www.monkeycalendar.com/arvindkt/root.php Live site works great. My localhost is set up so my sites are a folder in localhost: IE: http://www.example.com = localhost/example.com I'm having problems figuring out how to make my root folder point to the right directory. • Crossdomain TinyMCE

  Hi, folling this discussion and this link, I learnt that by adding document.domain = 'mydomain.com'; to the tinyMCE initializer file and tiny_mce_popup.js i can overcome the cross domain problem. I haven't tested it on a proper production server, but in my dev environment the base domain is localhost:8000 and my static files (also tinyMCE ones) are on localhost:88. Adding document.domain = 'localhost:8000'; or document.domain = 'localhost:88'; doesn't solve the problem as I get the following error: Uncaught Error: SECURITY_ERR: DOM Exception 18 Any help? • How to superpose two GwtCanvas ?

  Hi, I'm trying to superpose two GwtCanvas (which use an Html5 canvas). I am able to get this effect by using an absolute panel. But by doing this, I can't get my object to fill my panel. I would like to this so I can do a whiteboard in GWT. So far, I'm pretty advance but I would like to have multiple canvas overlay to support undo or preview. For example, if we draw a rectangle, it would be good to preview it as we move the mouse. I have found a javascript tutorial to do this : ex: http://dev.opera.com/articles/view/html5-canvas-painting/ There is a javascript example, but I'm not sure how to do the bridge between GWT and JavaScript. Any ideas ?

• Level of SVG SMIL (animation) support among the browsers

  Hi, Does anyone know the current state of SVG SMIL animation support in the popular browsers? It looks like Safari, Chrome, and Opera support it. Firefox has confusing reports in their dev pages about SMIL support having been added, but I don't see it as of v3.6: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=216462 I am ignoring IE since they don't even support SVG at all, and probably never will, much less SMIL. The other thing - just comparing this test page between Safari, Chrome, and Opera: http://srufaculty.sru.edu/david.dailey/svg/ovaling.svg looks like Opera is the only one that renders it correctly. Should we not be using SMIL - kind of looks half-baked in all the browsers (sadly)? Blast. Thanks

• MSBuild Starter Kits...

  Hi guys Just wondering if anyone knows if there are any MSBuild starter kits out there. What I mean by starter kits is that from the looks of it most builds to kinda the same sort of steps with minor changes here and there (i.e. most builds would run test, coverage, zip up the results, produce a report, deploy etc). Also what most people in general want from a CI build, test build, release build is mostly the same with minor changes here and there. Now don't get me wrong i think that most scripts are fairly different in the end. But I can't help but think that most start out life being fairly similar. Hence does anyone know of any "starter kits" that have like a dev/CI/test/release build with the common tasks that most people would want that you can just start changing and modifying? • How do I check if a swf file loaded correctly since put_Movie always returns S_OK?

  I am using the latest flash player and have a swf file served locally from my dev machine. In one container test app I am able to play the swf and make calls to it, but in my "Real" application the same code path results in com errors (basically it looks like the swf isn;' loading properly) Additionally this is made more challenging because no matter what nonsense I put in the call to put_Movie() the return is ALWAYS S_OK. This is confusing. How am I supposed to determine if the swf file loaded and is working? As a follow-on, what would cause a swf file (the same one) not to load in a different app? The code paths are the same (from what I can tell). Obviousl something is going on, but I am not sure what. So, I guess 2 questions How to know when swf file doesn't load right Why might it fail in a different container application? I am using ATL in Visual studio 2008, latest flash, MS Vista Thanks

• Where can I get resources for developing for Mac OS Classic?

  I recently got bored and fired up my old Mac OS Classic emulator, and then got nostalgic for writing old-school applications for the system. So, my question: Where can I get dev tools that can still target Classic? (Ideally free, since this is just for fun, but if grabbing a used version of CodeWarrior on eBay is the best way to go, so be it.) Where can I get at least reference materials so I don't have to guess-and-check my way around Carbon/the System Toolbox? Are there any forums still running that would be open to answering old-school Mac questions for when I get stuck? This is purely for fun, so don't worry about how impractical this is. I know.

  I have a pdf page displayed with CGContextDrawPDFPage in QuartzDemo sample application. I want to keep this page shown and have an image slide in from top over this page, just as it can be seen in the iBooks application. It's a book, the sliding image is a bookmark that slides in when you are about to close the book. • Why can event handlers can only be bound to HttpApplication events during IHttpModule initialization

  This is just another "working in dev server, why not working in IIS" type question. So, I created a nice DAL using NHibernate as described here. When creating an ISession, I hook up an event handler to the HttpApplication.EndRequest to take care of cleaning it up. However, I deployed my site to IIS and it says: Event handlers can only be bound to HttpApplication events during IHttpModule initialization. Since when? What for? Why? How can I bypass it?

• Output Path property issue on build server

  I am working in the .NET 3.5 framework. I have a project that builds fine locally. I can build it on our build server when the source files are posted there. However when I am running the build process through Visual Studio 2010 I get a warning that says "C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v3.5\Microsoft.Common.targets: The OutputPath property is not set for this project. Please check to make sure that you have specified a valid Configuration/Platform combination. Configuration='DEV' Platform='Any CPU'" Any suggestions anyone has or if you need additional information please let me know. I have been struggling with this for a couple of days now.
