  • Windows Server Task Scheduler: Running scheduled executable fail-safe?

    I have an executable which I've scheduled to run once in every five minutes (using Window's built-in Task Scheduler). It's crucial that this executable is run because it updates few time critical files. But how can I react if the virtual server running the executable goes down? At no point there shouldn't be more than 15 minutes break between the runs. As I'm using Windows Server and its Task Scheduler, I wonder is it possible to create some kind of a cluster which automatically handles the situation? The problem is that the server in question is running on Windows Azure and I don't think I can create actual clusters using the virtual machines. If the problem can be solved using a 3rd party tool, that's OK too. To generalize the question a little bit: How to make sure that an executable is run once in every 5 minutes, even if there might be server failures?

  • Dovecot (on Mac OS X Server 3 - Mavericks) giving “Error: Failed to autocreate mailbox INBOX: Permission denied”

    I recently upgraded my server to Mavericks and I thought everything had gone perfectly. As it turns out, that was not exactly the case. After everything working fine for a week or so, I created a new user and my mail server flat out stopped working. Most frustratingly, there were no log errors (in any of the many mail logs) which shed any light on the cause. After much trial and error, I finally got my mail server functioning (partially) by reinstalling server and restoring the mail folder from the previous day's backup (yay for backups). However, as is often the case, there were MANY permission issues. After slogging through various permission problems, I believe that my system is now receiving mail, however none of my users can check it because every time someone attempts to login the server generates following error: Error: Failed to autocreate mailbox INBOX: Permission denied I would assume that this is yet another permissions problem, however after much searching, I still cannot resolve this. To be clear, I don't want Dovecot to autocreate any mailboxes at this point because all of the mailboxes should exist. Any help on this would be sooooooo greatly appreciated. P.S. On a side note: why is it that repairing permissions never takes care of difficult issues like these? That would be awfully helpful...

  • Supermicro IPMI on MBD-X8DAH+-F-O motherboard. Keyboard and mouse do not work after booting Windows Server 2008 R2

    Hell Everyone, I built a server with the mentioned motherboard. I installed Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise on this server. IPMI is integrated on the motherboard with its own dedicated NIC. I've got that NIC configured with its own IP address. I can remote into it using IPMI, and I can remotely control the server settings before booting the OS ( BIOS, RAID configuration, etc). When the OS boots, I lose the mouse and keyboard. I cannot use the keyboard or mouse when installing the OS either. So the Keyboard and Mouse only work when no OS is loaded. Once the OS loads I lose it - that is my problem. I've been doing some research and trying a few things, but I have not been successful in fixing this issue. I may be wrong, but based on the things I've found online, it seems that the problem could be caused by the way the OS handles USB. The server is headless. There is no keyboard, mouse, or monitor plugged into it. When I boot up the OS and remote into it, I cannot see a mouse or keyboard listed in the Device Manager. Based on what I've read, it seems that the OS should detect a mouse and a keyboard when connecting remotely via IPMI. The following are the solutions I've tried. Nothing has worked so far: I've updated the firmware of the IPMI component to the latest firmware - 1.33. I made sure that the mouse mode was set to Absolute (Windows OS). I've loaded the factory defaults several times. I've enabled Port64h/60h Emulation under the USB settings in the BIOS. I've disabled USB legacy support in the BIOS. I made sure the firewall wasn't blocking IPMI (disabled the firewall). And that's about it. I've found threads in some forums from people having the same issue as me, but they were not running the same OS. They were either running Linux or FreeBSD. Most of them fixed their problem by selecting the right mouse mode (Linux in their case). There was one other that solved the problem by disabling USB Mass Storage mode. He stated "When I set it to disable USB Mass Storage when no image is loaded, the ukbd came alive, and I'm typing this on the IPMI Console.   • Cant kill process on Windows Server 2008!! - Thread in Wait:Executive State

    I hope someone can help me with our issue we are having. We have a major issue with a process that we can not kill and the only way to get rid of the process is to reboot the machine. I have tried killing it from the normal task manager but no joy. I have tried killing it using the taskkill /F command from a command prompt and no joy. The command reports as sucessful but the process remains. I have tried to start task manager with system rights by calling "psexec -s -i -d taskmgr" and attempting to kill the process but no joy I have tried killing it from Process Explorer but again the process remains. I have tried creating a scheduled task that runs under the SYSTEM name to kill the task but that also does not kill it : schtasks /create /ru system /sc once /st 13:16 /tn test1 /tr "taskkill /F /PID 1576" /it Nothing I do will kill this process. Even logging off and logging back on will not kill this process. Using Process Explorer I notice that there is on stubborn thread that is in the Wait:Executive state. I have tried to kill this thread using Process Explorer but again no joy. We are using Windows Server 2008 R2 64-Bit. The server is brand new and windows is freshly installed. Now heres the thing. We have brought two identical servers from Dell with the same specs and the same OS installed and I can not replicate this issue on the other server. Only on this server, under certain circumstances does this server process hang and can not be restarted! I have also changed the compatability mode by setting it the process to "Windows 2003" but this has not helped. I have noticed in Process Explorer that DEP is turned on but im not sure this has got any bearing on the issue ot not. Please, can someone help??

    Hi All, tl;dr - I have a rooted linux box that I want to run tomcat on as a server (No Apache Web Server) how would you set this up avoiding common security pitfalls? I've written a Grails App that I want to run on a VPS I rent. The VPS has very little memory and I am using it for the sole purpose of running this application so I don't need the apache web server. This is my first venture into Server administration and I'm sure to fall into some well known traps. Should I use iptables to redirect requests from port 80 to 8080? Should I run tomcat as root or as it's own user? What configuration settings would be good for a low memory system expecting less than 10 concurrent users? Hopefully an easy one for you! Anyone who could link to a tutorial would be a personal hero destined for great things no doubt. Gav

  • Poor performance on IIS7, only on Windows Server 2008, fine on Windows 7?

    Hi, I'm new to IIS7 but have experience with other versions. I've been working on an application that works great in a dev environment (as always) but when I push it to a windows server 2008/IIS7 box performance takes a noticeable hit. The dev environment is Windows7/IIS7. The configuration in IIS is the same on the dev box as the server. I've tried all sorts of things to try and find a reason for this but I cant come to any conclusion. I've ruled out database problems on the live box as all data is cached after the first request. I've confirmed this to be true and made sure there is no additional database traffic. I've ruled out network issues with a combination of monitoring requests with fiddler and local debugging on the server. Whenever the code runs on the server there seems to be a performance issue. The server: Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40ghz with 2gb RAM. I know this is not fantastic but I was expecting it to at least perform as well as my dev environment (which is running much more on a lower spec). The CPU using peaks at under 60%, and memory usage is less than half of the available. I've enabled failed request tracing and most of the time is spent in a custom HttpModule, this module works to handle every request, I cant get any more detail as to what within the module may be causing the problem. Any ideas, I've been pulling my hair out for days now. Thanks

    I would like to setup the Remote Desktop Connection Broker to allow better load balancing of the two terminal servers we have as well as allowing the user to re-establish to the correct server if they get disconnected. My worry is, if I set this up and the server this service is running goes down, does the terminal server stop accepting connections or will they just lose the benefit of having RDCB turned on? I don't want to add another point of failure in this equation unless I have to.

    I have a SQL Server 2008 instance. I have configured filestream access properly, and use it from one column on one table in one of my databases. However, I cannot access the UNC share for the filestream data. I have tried browsing to it as well as trying to open specific files and I get errors both ways. I am running SQL Server 2008 enterprise on a Windows 7 workstation running on the domain. I've tried running the sql server service as a local user, then as network admin. The user I am logged in as is a local admin and a sysadmin in SQL server.

  • Accessing a shared folder in Windows Server 2008 R2.

    Hello all, seems my involvement with computers has grown and I've found my self in the need to access a shared folder on a server. I've read some documentation and managed to set up the folder as a share, for this I created a local group and for now just one local user that has access to the share, the folder is in the public user folder and it's permissions should be (and I believe they are) read/write. The problem is that I can't connect from a remote machine I mean I don't know how the way it should be accessed, the server has a public IP and we use it also as a host to our website I don't know if that affects it though, the folder will be used as the "keeper" for the QuickBooks company files and has the database server manager installed. I've tried setting up a VPN Connection to the but no success. The server has a domain name a "http://www.example.com" that redirects to our website, I am unsure if it could be accessed that way, also the share has a location displayed when I right-click properties Heres what I've tried Setting up a VPN Connection (Windows Vista and 7) Got to the point where I got asked for credential and entered the user I created (which is not an admin) but I got a "Connection fail error 800" I suppose this is because in the domain field I entered the servers workgroup. right-click add network connection (Windows 7) Went through the wizard until I reached the point of entering the location, tried many things, the name in the share's properties(\\SOMETHING\Share), the http://www.example.com , the IP address I'm quite unfamiliar with this, so I have my guesses: Since the group and user are local they do not have access to the folder. The firewall in the server is blocking my connection. Anyways, any help and guidence is truly appreciated.

    I have no formal education in databasing or programming, but I've learned enough SQL, C++, and C# to at least get started setting up a small database on my company's server. Using MS SQL Server 2008 R2, I have created the database and set up columns with proper data types. However, there seems to be a lot of tweaks and details that are way over my head. Since I would like these data to be accessible to the other 7 or 8 people in my office (preferably via web browser), I'm wondering whether this is the best setup for my situation. The other option I've read about is a LAMPP server, which I assume is the competing free option to Microsoft's Express packages. I know nothing of LAMP servers except from the articles I've read on how to set them up (and I believe I even saw a detailed tutorial somewhere). To summarize, my question is this: Which of these (or any other) server setups would best suit my purposes, keeping in mind that I'm a true novice (but willing to learn), and would like to keep it free until I get more experience?

    I studied the new MERGE Statement and there is a nice example for importing a flatfile. INSERT <Table> SELECT * FROM OPENROWSET BULK <Import-Flat-File>, <Format-File>... seems to be a good replacment for such a simple job and avoids to build a SSIS-Package. EXEC XP_CMDSHELL bcp <Table or View> out <Flat-File> ... is almost simpler than building an SSIS, isn't it? (I know that the MERGE-Statement doesn't run on a SQL2005)

    Hi all, Just a quick question – my server is running at my house serving www pages at www.javawag.com. The problem is that my home internet connection keeps dropping randomly - for about 10 mins at a time. This is only an intermittent problem and will go away soon I hope. However, my server doesn't recover properly - when the connection comes back, I can still access it at 192.168.0.8 (locally) without any issue, but at www.javawag.com there's no reply! (Just an aside - my home internet connection is dynamic ISP, the domain www.javawag.com points to javawag.dyndns.org which in turn points to my IP, updated every minute by ddclient on the server) Is there some way for the server to check if it's accessible from the outside world periodically, and if not restart Apache/reboot?     I work in a company that has some limitations regarding their budget. They need client/server aplication. I can code the aplication, I've made mini tests on primordial applications that work. The thing is that they only have fileservers, and the application they need must be concurrent compliant, so the database must be in their local network (Fileserver is the only choice). So far, I have explored almost any option available, starting with: Desktop databases. Access (We have a license)(But concurreny is just not effective, besides it's a windows software, yuck). Sqlite (Nice, but since the information they manage is a lot, I've performed some concurrency tests with INSERTs and doing SELECTS at the same time). It fails, somehow it just stops inserting. Open office Base (I dismember a base office only to see that it was a file mode HSQLDB). I've tried, not concurrent at all. Etc (You name the Open source Desktop Database manager, and yes, I've tried that one.) Server databases Call me a stubborn person, but reading some server databases documentation say that their databases will work in a file mode. I've tried a lot of products. Postgres, MySQL, FireBird, H2, Derby, Oracle Express, IBM DB2 Express, etc. So, I really need a hand here, I've been doing this install/delete/depression thing with a lot of databases for 3 weeks, until I got with a crazy idea and I just came here to express it. So, my question comes down to this: Installing a light virtual OS software like Virtual PC and then installing in there a Server OS like an Ubuntu server inside that virtual software will work? Will it work 24/7 or when I close the virtual pc software? Will this work in a fileserver? Any suggestion, answer, critic to the place I work, crazy new concurrent database that will work in fileserver will be most than welcome.

    In our network, single domain controller, when some users (members of the domain) request shared folders on the server they are required to enter their credentials, the server is Windows Server 2008 R2, even checking to remember my credentials doesn't work, sometimes it shows this message: "The system has detected a possible attempt to compromise security. Please ensure that you can contact the server that authenticated you", sometimes it shows different messages, when I try to recreate the case sometimes I failed, I searched Google for it, I didn't find useful results, some talk about kerberos, but we don't use kerberos, this keeps going each day or two, how to overcome this, I don't want these messages to appear to users?

I tryed run Visual Studio in admin mode and moved the mdf file to "user data" folders but the error persists.. Any help? Thanks!
