• Missing taskbar buttons on Taskbar in Windows XP

  My Windows XP only show Taskbar without taskbar buttons. I can change Task Windows using Alt+Tab Keys. In task Manager, there is show All open windows and task. But Missing taskbar buttons on taskbar. I've already repair windows by "second R". But still missing taskbar buttons. If I reinstall windows, then I will lost all software program install on that windows XP. I don't want to reinstall all software program after windows installation. So what shall I do, Please share your experience. I would like to know how to show taskbar bottons on taskbar without reinstall. Other toolbars on taskbar are OK. • Using the RST3 plugin in the Leo Outliner

  I'm currently trying out the Leo Outliner, and I've heard quite a bit about the RST3 plugin that it has. I'm not planning to use Leo to program just yet -- at this point I'm wondering if it might be useful for generating HTML and PDF documents, as I'm quite currently enamored with RST and how it works. I'm using my Ubuntu Netbook Remix netbook (running 9.10, I believe). I think I've got it down pat, more or less -- I've installed docutils using the Synaptics Package Manager, and I think I've gotten SilverCity installed, as per the requirements -- I've downloaded the archive, and then run "sudo python setup.py install" with no errors. The thing is, I'm not exactly sure how to invoke the rst3 plugin itself. It doesn't appear in the Plugins menu for Leo right now, and the documentation I've managed to source doesn't seem to clearly explain how to use the plugin. Has anyone had any experience in using the rst3 plugin in Leo? It's a little confusing right now, and searches on Google doesn't seem to be helping much any more. I'm using the latest 4.7.1 final version of Leo from the Synaptics Package Manager (was informed that this would have offered the best integration with UNR, so I figured, what the heck). Have I missed out on any steps here, and are there any useful tutorials on how to use the rst3 plugin?

• How to stop Excel 2003 from loading a Gazillion files

  One of my soon-to-be-ex-friends got an Excel file from another friend of his and decided to click on it. It started opening all kinds of files from within Excel. Over 200 and still counting when he called me. I told him to go to task manager, which showed a LOT of files in the applications tab, but only one Excel.exe in the processes tab. Closing it down there, closed down Excel. I then CrossLooped in to see if I could give him a helping hand. Each time Excel was re-opened, the mass influx of files started. They were all kinds of files, PDFs, Docs, JPGs, even some spreadsheets. It looked like the end of solitaire, with multiple windows opening (XP) and the counter on the lone Excel button on the task bar counting off the files. I did the task manager exit routine and went looking for temp files. I CrapCleaned out the system. Made sure I went through the files created in the last hour and deleted anything with a temp anywhere in it. I also deleted the crappy infected/corrupted file from it's place on the desktop (yeah, I know, I yelled for 15 minutes on THAT subject). Despite a delousing, the restart of Excel, which complained of a deactivated add-in, would start the cascading windows, whether I answered yes or no to that question. Yes, it knew it had a serious crash, but why would it just keep on trying to load the bad file, even when I got rid of it? But here's the real question. WHERE was it loading from? I went through the backup folder and NOTHING was there! So what's the process for starting Excel WITHOUT it trying to do a crash recovery? Sort of makes me feel stupid at times. • Grant access for users on a separate domain to SharePoint

  Hello. I just completed development of a SharePoint site on a virtual server and am currently in the process of granting users from a different domain to the site. The SharePoint domain is SHAREPOINT, and the domain with the users I want to give access to is COMPANY. I have provided them with a link to the site and added them as users via SharePoint, which is all I thought I would need to do. However, when they go to the link, the site shows them a SharePoint error page. • SQL Server Management Studio not scripting all objects

  i've been attempting to script a database using SQL Server 2005 Management Studio. i cannot get it to script some objects. It scripts others, but skips some. i can provide detailed screen shots the options being selected including all tables the folder where the script files will go the folder being empty before scripting the scripting process saying Sucess when scripting a table the destination folder no longer empty, with a hundred or so script files the script of some tables not being in the folder. And earlier SSMS would not script some views. Is this a known thing that the the Generate Scripts task does not generate scripts? Update Known issue on Microsoft Connect, but Microsoft couldn't repro the steps, so they closed closed the ticket. Fails on SQL Server 2005, also fails on SQL Server 2008. • How can I set my bootloader to load my primary (C:) partition?

  I created 4 partitions and want to use them to have seperate Windows XP, Windows 7, (possibly) Windows Vista installations, and "WinDummy" (to test applications in Vista, XP or another OS). I used Norton Ghost to install an OS to the drive in about 3 minutes. My problem is that I installed the spare first on the 4th partition, then Windows 7 on the second. I tried to set the bootloader (with easybcd) to use the first partition - but it doesn't want to. Heres my debug screen on easybcd As you can see, the device is set to H and i cant figure out how to change it. I can make my bootloader use Windows 7 first, but I can't make it use my C: install of XP instead of my spare H:. How would I fix this? • kvm works only when kvm-intel is unloaded

  I am new to kvm. I have this strange issue. But before explaining the issue, here is my set up. I try to install VM on my Host which is a Acer Laptop 5720 Has T7500 Intel processor. The cpu flags indicate that Virtualization is supported. I run Ubuntu 10.04 (lucid) on it. It comes with kvm. Now coming to the issue - I dont get any errors while executing "sudo modprobe kvm-intel". So I presume my processor does indeed support hardware virtualization. I use virt-manager and create a VM on which I install ubuntu from an *.iso file. When I start the VM it says it is running. No signs of any trouble. I can see the domain list in "virsh list". But when I try to connect to the VM thru VNC, all I get to see is a blank screen (no cursor). There is no response to any key press. I changed the video mode etc. Tried all different combinations but none work. But strangely, if I shutdown the vm an virt-manager and then unload the module by doing "sudo modprove -r kvm-intel", everything works fine. ie., I can see the screen via VNC. I am able to install the OS and so on. So what does this mean ? IS hardware virtualization not supported ? How come there is no error anywhere ? dmesg | grep kvm doesnt report anything. Can someone throw light on what excatly is happening ?

  I have a server that san boots that I want to p2v. I have many options disk2vhd, scvmm etc but I was thinking about cloning the lun (flexclone, netapp) presenting it to my hyper-v r2 server. Within the hv manager do a create new disk then have it copy the cloned lun to a vhd file. Then do the bcdedit\bootsect stuff to it. Should work right? I'm also curious if anybodys booting vhd's that are on bootable luns? I've booted native vhd's just fine was just curious about the running them off a bootable lun. I think that this has quite a few advantages like instant p2v etc.. any thoughts on this? hmm dang as I was typing this I realized that I should not use the hv manager new disk copy routine, I should just disk2vhd the mounted lun. This has advantages in that it should be a lot faster!! discovered that disk2vhd may be flaky, crashed the first time I ran it! thanks

• Oracle with Kerberos authentication and Windows 2003 Server as KDC

  I am running Oracle 10.2 on a Windows 2003 Server SP2 which is also the domain controller on the network. I wish to switch authentication method from NTS to Kerberos. I have spent a lot of time trying to configure Oracle with Kerberos authentication from the Oracle Advanced Security option from the Net Manager utility. I have disabled NTS so Kerberos is promoted as the preferred authentication method. But as soon as the configuration is saved from Net Manager and I restart the Oracle server service, Oracle will not start. I don't know what Oracle is complaining about, because I don't know where to look for the Oracle error log. My first question is: how can I figure out what's bugging Oracle? My second question: is there a good tutorial for setting up Oracle on a Windows 2003 with Kerberos Authentication, where the Windows 2003 Server is the KDC? Maybe there is a book I can get? I have read Oracles own guide, but it is mostly for Linux/Unix. Thanks a lot!

• How does the EFI partition work and can I boot an x86 OS with a bootx64.efi file?

  I have a Thinkpad X230 laptop and I want to install Linux Mint Debian Edition along side Windows 7 on my GPT formatted SSD with the BIOS in UEFI mode. The problem is that I don't understand how EFI booting works. There seems to be an EFI partition involved with some folders and binary files in it. GRUB 2 seems to be able to make more folders in it (I followed this guide http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/UEFI_Firmware), but it appears that the only file that does anything is the bootx64.efi file in the /efi/boot folder of the EFI partition (I am not sure if this is always the case, but it appears to be the case for my laptop http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Category:X220). Here is what I have been able to do: I can install Linux Mint Debian Edition x86 with the BIOS in BIOS mode on my SSD. I can then install grub-efi and follow the guide linked above. The problem is that I don't get a GRUB prompt when I switch the BIOS to UEFI mode. It just boots Windows. It appears that I can either boot from the SSD or something called "Windows Boot Manager". If I replace the bootx64.efi with the file created by GRUB, I can no longer boot directly from the SSD. Booting from "Windows Boot Manager" still works fine. I realize that the guide says to use x64 Linux, but Linux Mint Debian Edition x64 hangs during the install process. I am really confused. What should I do? Can anyone explain how the EFI boot partition works? Can a bootx64.efi boot an x86 OS? Should I just give up with using UEFI? I haven't been able to find very much useful information about using Debian based operating systems with UEFI. Thanks, Ian

• Lost partition after restarting

  I have Window 7 Professional Service pack installed in my Laptop Lenovo Thinkpad t420. After formatting the disk, and install Window 7 (detailed as above), I went to Computer -- Manager -- Storage -- Disk Management to split my 300gb C partition into 2 partition: C (which is 162gb) E (which is 140gb) Is work fine for about 2 days. Today, when I turn on my computer, I'm very suprise that the E partition is disappear. I can surely confirm that I didn't do any stupid thing yesterday. And before I shut down my computer, everything was fine. In general, here is what I did during the last today (from the point that I formatted the disk, and installed Window) Format 300gb hard disk Install window 7 Install eclipse, db2, .... ( I'm a developer) Install some other tools (Open office, Skype...) Install PGP (http://www.symantec.com/encryption) <--- I'm forced to used that due to my company policy Use Computer -- Manager -- Storage -- Disk Management to split my 300gb C partition into 2 partition as described above.   I found the following in a text file, and I would like to use the Apple Service Diagnostic Application from a bootable USB key but I cannot find where to download it or set it up? Also is this free software or does it require a separate licence? It sounds like it would be a useful tool for diagnosing Mac problems. The Apple Service Diagnostic application is designed to run both EFI and Mac OS X tests from an external USB hard drive. Apple Service Diagnostic (EFI) runs low-level tests of the hardware directly and does not require Mac OS X, while Apple Service Diagnostic (OS) uses Mac OS X to run tests. Booting and Using the Apple Service Diagnostic Application - Before using Apple Service Diagnostic, disconnect any Ethernet network, USB, and audio cables. - With the USB hard drive containing ASD 3S123 plugged into a USB port, restart the computer and hold down the option key as the computer boots up into the Startup Manager. To run ASD (EFI) select the "ASD EFI 3S123" drive icon and press return or select it with a mouse click. To run ASD (OS) select the "ASD OS 3S123" drive icon and press return or select it with a mouse click. ASD (EFI) will load in 20-30 seconds; ASD (OS) will load in 2-3 minutes. - After running ASD (OS) or ASD (EFI), press the Restart button to restart the computer back into the normal startup volume, or hold down the option key to get back to the Startup Manager. ASD is no longer delivered as an image to be restored onto a DVD. ASD 3S117 and newer versions requires installation onto an external USB hard drive. • Windows 7 Not Recognizing Camera Nor iPhone as Camera

  I've been struggling with this one for a few days. I've recently upgraded an older computer to Windows 7 Home Premium. Neither my digital camera (A Canon SD1200IS) nor iPhone are ever detected as cameras, nor ever show up as accessable in Explorer. With the Canon camera, no driver is required. It's supposed to work with the default Windows 7 drivers. However, in the Control Panel's Device Manager, I'm always seeing a yellow icon next to the "Canon Digital Camera" device. I've uninstalled the device and let Windows attempt to reinstall, but it can never find a driver to install. With the iPhone, it's very similar. One big difference, though, is that iTunes can see the iPhone and back it up, etc. However, again when I go to the Device Manager, there's a yellow icon next to the iPhone. I've uninstalled iTunes, reinstalled, rebooted, deleted drivers, and let Window try to reinstall the driver, but it can never find the driver. So there seems to be some correlation that my machine can't detect cameras properly, and that it might be even a lower-level type of driver I'm struggling with. I know that USB however, does work, because I have have an external drive hooked into the machine. I've gone through the web and tried two hours worth of fixes, without success. I feel like if I can get the Canon camera detected, then the iPhone will be on it's way to being fixed too. BTW, I couldn't really find anything of use in the Event viewer. Any and all suggestions welcome.

• Configuring WPA WiFi in Ubuntu 10.10

  I am trying to configure my wireless network on my laptop running Ubuntu 10.10 and am having a bit of difficulty. I am a complete Linux newb, but want to learn it, hence the reason I'm trying to set this up. Here's the vitals: It is a Gateway 600 YG2 laptop. It was previously running Windows XP, but I installed Ubuntu 10.10 in place of it (not a dual boot, I removed XP altogether). I have an old wireless card that I'm trying to resurrect. I haven't really used the card in a couple years, but it seems to still work, I just can't connect to my home's wireless network. The card is a Linksys WPC11 v2.5. When I plug it in, Ubuntu recognizes the network, but won't connect to it. My home network uses WPA encryption and the only connection type that Ubuntu's network manager is giving me is WEP and then it asks for a key -- I have no idea what that key should be. So, basically, I'm asking, is there a way I can instead connect through WPA? I've tried creating a new connection in network manager, but that won't work, it keeps falling back to the WEP connection and asking me for a key. I have tried to install the XP driver using ndiswrapper but I don't know if that's working or not. Is there a way to tell if: A) the card is working as it should B) the correct drivers are installed (again, I installed the XP one using ndiswrapper NET8180.INF, but I'm not sure what to do next) Any help would be appreciated. • Azure load-balancing strategy

  I'm currently building out a small web deployment using VM instances on MS Azure. The main problem I'm facing at the moment is trying to figure out how to get the load-balancing to detect if a particular VM has failed and not route traffic to that VM. As far as I can tell, there are only only two load-balancing options: Have multiple VMs (web01, web02, web03 etc.) within the same 'cloud service' behind a single VIP, and configure the endpoints to be load balanced. Create multiple 'cloud services', put a single web VM in each and create a traffic manager service across all these services. It appears that (1) is extremely simplistic and doesn't attempt to do any host failure detection. (2) appears to be much more varied, but requires me to put all my webservers in their own individual cloud service. Traffic manager appears to be much more directed at a geographic failover scenario, where you have multiple cloud services across different regions. This approach also has the disadvantage in that my web servers won't be able to communicate with my databases on internal IP addresses, unlike scenario (1). What's the best approach here?

  I want to know if you have any tips as to how to strengthen the security of a non-root install of Tomcat in standalone mode once Tomcat is already installed in a non-root account, in standalone mode. Because, once again, I DO NOT want to need to be root to install Java & Tomcat. The only moment I needed to be root was to configure the firewall to transparently do the port forwarding 80 <-- 8080 and 443 <-- 8443. I then deleted all the default webapps but one: cd ~/apache-tomcat-6.0.26/webapps rm -rf docs rm -rf examples/ rm -rf manager/ rm -rf ROOT/ What about the directory ~/apache-tomcat-6.0.26/webapps/host-manager, do I need it or can I delete it? So, once I've installed Tomcat standalone in a non-root account (and taken into account that I don't want to enter the root password anymore and that I don't plan to install the whole Apache shebang), what more can I do? Are there connectors I can disable? (how?)

• How to disable auto insert notification in Windows 7?

  Alright, here's the problem. My hard drive activity light on my custom built PC is blinking exactly once every second. Microsoft has this to say on the issue: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/138598 There has been discussion on this issue several months ago: Why does my hard drive LED light blink every second? The problem seems to stem from primarily Windows 7 polling the CD-ROM/DVD drive every second to see if something is inserted. The Windows 7 users in the thread that was linked in the superuser question, https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/fi-FI/w7itprohardware/thread/4f6f63b3-4b58-4154-9298-1566100f9d00, have confirmed that this IS a known issue with Windows 7. Some people point at the motherboard circuitry causing the CD-ROM and SATA activity to both be linked to that hard drive activity, but whatever the case, the temporary solution seems to be to disable the CD/DVD-ROM drive in Device Manager. In fact, disabling the CD/DVD-ROM does stop the blinking, but of course this solution is counterproductive, because I shouldn't have to entirely disable a device to fix this problem. I've done the following suggestions in that thread: Change the autorun registry entry to 0 Completely disable autoplay in the autoplay control panel Disable autoplay in the Local Group Policy Editor. None of these stop the blinking from happening - apparently these solutions work for both XP and Vista, but it seems to be different in Windows 7. So I'm wondering if anyone has found out how to completely disable the polling in Windows 7, or if this will just have to be an issue we will have to deal with. There's no option to disable the auto insert notification when you go to the device within device manager (there was in XP), so I got no idea where this option is hidden, or if there's a registry key entry I could change to stop the polling. Anyone have any idea?

• Tomcat deployment overwrites context.xml

  Hi, I'm pretty new to Tomcat in general, so please point out if got anything wrong. My question is regarding updates to already deployed apps, using the Tomcat manager. But first thing first. I'm using the META-INF/Context.xml for storing connection info for the database connections, so this is unique to every server the application is deployed to. I'm not sure if this is optimal but it's the only way I know. So, when updating the application, it's important that this file doesn't get modified, because I don't want to have to go in and remake all changes every time I update my app. For updating, I'm using the Tomcat Manager, and I've tried different approaches but everything seems to build on the process of undeploy, then deploy the new version. This way, the Context.xml gets removed/replaced by an empty Context.xml file. So my question is basically, how do I update a running webapp, and at the same time having the Context.xml left untouched? Btw, I'm running Tomcat 6.0.24.

• Should one have a separate user account for work use? [closed]

  This question examines the practice of using a separate OS-level user account to divide work use from personal use (specifically, in a creative profession and on a personal computer). I recently left my in-the-flesh job to go to school, but I'm carrying on with the work remotely. I do all of my work on my laptop, and I currently have a separate user account called "Work" where I do exactly that. However, I'm now starting to question that practice. Because my hobby is the same as my job, I want to save notes of the things I learn while working. Because ideas come at any moment, I often want to throw something into my personal task manager's inbox and look at it again later. That task manager is well-suited to handle both the work and personal aspects of my life. Only my personal account has admin rights, but work sometimes requires me to install programs. My employer has no preference regarding my choice, so that is a non-issue. My work is essentially freelance web development, so advice given with that in mind will be much appreciated. Back up all opinion with some personal experience, please. Ideally, give a list of pros and cons and then name reasons for your position.

• Struggling to set-up NLB cluster

  I'm trying to set up NLB on a couple of Windows 2008 R2 virtual servers running on top of Hyper V R2. The servers each have a single vNIC for LAN access (and a second vNIC for SAN access). I'm setting up the cluster to use Multicast mode. The vNICs are each set to allow MAC spoofing. Essentially I'm finding that i can add SERVER1 as a host and it will pick up and respond to the cluster IP from a remote subnet. If I then 'stop' the node in NLB manager it still responds when I would expect it to stop answering on that IP. If I recreate the cluster and add SERVER2 as the first host, the wizard completes correctly and an IPCONFIG on the server shows that it now has the cluster IP but I can't ping the cluster IP from a remote subnet but I can from another machine on the same subnet. As a final test - with both servers in the cluster, pinging from another machine on the same subnet I still get a response from the cluster IP when both nodes are stopped according to the NLB manager. The two VMs are sat on the same physical blade and are built up exactly the same as they'll be used as SharePoint web front end servers. I'm at a loss as to what could be wrong with the second VM that prevents it taking on the address just as the sole node in the cluster, never mind the strange behaviour of the cluster when I stop/start nodes.

• How can I parse/ transform text log data before it gets captured in SCOM 2007 R2?

  I'm pretty much a noob with System Center Operations Manager 2007, and I'm probably missing something pretty basic, but I'm stumped anyway. We're setting up monitoring on some of our servers, and we'd like to capture data from some plain text log files (e.g. DNS debug logs, DHCP logs). It looks to me like I can set up a generic text file monitoring rule and get events captured into the main Ops Manager database, but my understanding is that the whole line of text from the plain text log gets captured as one field. In an ideal world, we'd be able to parse or transform that log file data to make it easier to query later. Is this possible? Is it easy? Do I have to buy expensive 3rd-party software to do it? One more thing: it would be even better if there was a way to stuff this data into the Audit Collection Services (ACS) database instead of the main one, but I'll take what I can get. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
