  I'm looking for advice on how to enable our team to take down and re-start our company systems for maintainance purposes. The scenario includes several Oracle db machines several MS SQL Server machines with multiple instances windows services (IIS etc.) BizTalk EAI solution Apache and Tomcat instances lots of scheduled tasks on win2003 and win2008 machines (physical and virtual). The main focus is on capture all dependencies between said databases and services and tasks connecting to them. At the moment an enterprise class solution is not an option. We are considering developing a solution driven by PowerShell scripts but I hope for some more suggestions.

• Using AutoMySQLBackup on Rackspace Cloud

  Since Rackspace Cloud only allows FTP access it makes using AutoMySQLBackup a little trickier, and while it is at least creating DB dumps I get errors in the backup log: ###### WARNING ###### Errors reported during AutoMySQLBackup execution.. Backup failed Error log below.. .../backups/automysqlbackup: line 1791: /usr/bin/find: Permission denied .../backups/automysqlbackup: line 1855: /usr/bin/find: Permission denied .../backups/automysqlbackup: line 803: /usr/bin/find: Permission denied .../backups/automysqlbackup: line 1972: /usr/bin/du: Permission denied Since files are being created I'm assuming the find command failing has to do with actually rotating out and deleting the old backups?   On a new db server I only have 10 disks to play with, The usage is about a booking every 3-5 seconds, so not high volume, I know compromises have to be made, but my initial thoughts are - DISK 1 & 2 - RAID 1 - OS DISKS 3,4,5,6 - RAID 10 - Data, Indexes & TempDB DISKS 7,8,9,10 - RAID 10 - Logs & Backup Full backups will take place when there is virtually no traffic on the website so not bothered about the contention with the logs. disk 3-10 - 8kb NTFS unit allocation size disk 3-10 - 64kb Disk Stripe size does this seems to be sensible, any other considerations I have omitted ? thanks

• My PowerShell functions do not appear to be registered

  Hi there, I have a ps1 script in which I define 2 functions as such: function Invoke-Sql([string]$query) { Invoke-Sqlcmd -ServerInstance $Server -Database $DB -User $User -Password $Password -Query $query } function Get-Queued { Invoke-Sql "Select * From Comment where AwaitsModeration = 1" } I then call the ps1 file by typing it in (it's in a folder in the path, and autocompletion works) However, I cannot start using the functions. I am confused, because when I copy / paste the functions into the console, all is fine and they work. I also have a function defined in my profile, and it works. Where am I thinking wrong, why doesn't it work what I'm trying to do?

  hi,.. Can somebody help in understanding how Lun Provisioning is done in clariion based on client requirement. Say, a client needs one 50 GB space on the host( for application) ,two -350 GBs ( for DB and stuff) on the same host and i have 4 raid groups with space of 200 GB in one 50 GB in second and 400 GB and 400GB in rest two all having 5 disks. And , I 'm using Raid 5 only. How do i provision keeping performance in mind( so that performance hit is not there)?..And i need to understand the concept of meta head as well. Please help me by elaborating the above scenario..I am learning to provision storage in non productive environment( b'fore going ahead and working on client prod server) and i have been learning a lot from SF ...I request the seniors here to help me understand it better.   Hi, I have configured my Postfix server with vacation for a domain. Sending a message to [email protected] causes two events: The message is delivered to the recipient ([email protected]) An auto-reply message is sent to the sender, alerting that [email protected] should be used instead. Everything works well except for one particular drawback: the auto-reply is also sent to the recipient, so it receives two messages in the end. What can I do to avoid that? I'm only using the $TO variable in the custom vacation.msg message. And here is Postfix's master.cf vacation line: autoreply unix - n n - - pipe flags=Rhu user=vacation argv=/usr/bin/vacation -j -m /home/vacation/.vacation.msg -f /home/vacation/.vacation.db vacation I know using the -j is a little bit risky according to man page, but I'm kind of testing here.

• Command line audio library manager for Linux

  Hi all Hear is my set-up, I have a Linux server that is running Music Player Demon, all the audio files are under a dir (/muzik) which is exported by NFS. So to add files to the MPD database, I just drop the files into the /muzik NFS share and up date the MPD db, so far so good, but I would like to keep the dir strucher belowe /muzik in sum sort of order. To achieve this I am using Amarok, wich a start on my laptop and then use the organise files command to sort the files in into a sensible dir strucher based on the tags in the files. Do you know of any command line utility that can do the same thing that I am using Amarok for so I can run it from cron on the server and automate the process? I hope that this make sense.

PLEX is great because it automatically find and name all my movie library with year, director, gender, original title, description, movie poter art, etc. Unfortunately, it saves all the data only on a app DB file without edit any tag on the MKV files. A 20% of the movies needs to be fixed or PLEX needs help to find exactly the movie name, so if I need to move all my library elsewere, I need to do all the tagging work again.   I use Avaya Reporting Services and OpenLink ODBC Drivers for db connection. I know that it uses port 5000 for handshaking but after that I believe it uses an random port for communication. I want to deploy my application and it will communicate with the client's system in their datacenter. They are asking what ports should they open on their firewalls. I can't obviously give them a range above 50,000 that I know OpenLink ODBC Drivers use. Can someone tell me what port should I tell my client to open?

  Hi I'm performance tuning a DB server its a Dell R710 there is a very significant I/O bottleneck. Unfortunately the server was purchased with the 6 x 3.5 inch sata configuration which doesn't give me the leeway I need to address the issue. Before going to DAS does anyone know if it is possible to purchase a replacement front drive enclosure ? I know the server is configurable with something like 12 or 16 2.5 inch drives and it appears to be modular ? I tired contacting dell but the offshore parts department reps are not very bright lol. • SQL Server tempdb size seems large, is this normal?

  From what I understand the system database is used to hold temporary tables, intermediate results and other temporary information. On one of my database instances I have a tempdb that is seems very large (30GB). This database has not been modified (as in "last modified date" on the mdf file) in over a week. Is it normal to have the temp db remain that large for that long of a period? It seems to me that it should be updating fairly often and returning space that it is using fairly quickly... Am I way off here or is SQL Server doing something weird? FYI: This is a SharePoint 2010 database, not sure if that makes a difference.

  I need to set up a subversion repository with apache authentication against both an external LDAP server as well as the local Redmine database. That is, we have users whose accounts exist only in the LDAP directory and some users whose accounts only exist in the local Redmine db - all should be able to access the repo. I can't quite seem to get the apache config right for this. I know I saw a how-to for this at some point, I think using Redmine.pm, but I can't seem to find it anymore.. Thanks.

• verisign certificate into jboss server SSL

• How much HDD space would I need to cache the web while respecting robot.txts?

  I want to experiment with creating a web crawler. I'll start with indexing a few medium sized website like Stack Overflow or Smashing Magazine. If it works, I'd like to start crawling the entire web. I'll respect robot.txts. I save all html, pdf, word, excel, powerpoint, keynote, etc... documents (not exes, dmgs etc, just documents) in a MySQL DB. Next to that, I'll have a second table containing all restults and descriptions, and a table with words and on what page to find those words (aka an index). How much HDD space do you think I need to save all the pages? Is it as low as 1 TB or is it about 10 TB, 20? Maybe 30? 1000? Thanks

• How can I change my mysql user that has all privileges on a database to only have select privileges on one specific table?

  I gave my mysql user the "GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON database_name.* to my_user@localhost" treatment. Now I would like to be more granular, starting with lowering privileges on a specific table. I am hoping mysql has or can be set to follow a "least amount of privileges" policy, so I can keep the current setup and lower it for the one table. But I have not seen anything like this in the docs or online. Other than removing the DB level grant and re-granting on a table level, is there a way to get the same result by adding another rule?

• What's a good way for organizing PDF documents on windows?

  I'm looking for a good way to manage a lot of pdf documents (e.g. papers, ebooks) on windows. Ideally I'm looking for a windows version of the great mac app Yep. I've looked quite a bit and haven't found any windows app that provides and organized overview of your pdf documents. I've considered just tagging the pdf files, but there don't seem to be any apps to simply tag and search tagged files easily. I've found TaggedFrog, but the tags are kept in the app's internal DB and are associated with the filename. So if you move/rename a file it looses all its tags. In a nutshell: Is there a good windows app to organize/efficiently tag files?

  I have downloaded databasename.bak file from my hosting company, when i tried to restore that DB file in SQL server 2008 it is keep on giving me following error. The media family on device 'C:\go4sharepoint_1384_8481.bak' is incorrectly formed. SQL Server cannot process this media family. RESTORE HEADERONLY is terminating abnormally. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 3241) According to this error and from following link http://www.sqlcoffee.com/Troubleshooting047.htm It is clear that either file i am downloading is corrupt or it is getting corrupted on the way? Any idea, why I am keep on receiving this error? I tried almost all ways but unable to fix this problem, please help me.

• File replication among EC2 instances

  I am pretty new to AWS so please excuse my ignorance. We are wanting to have a setup whereby we have a SQL DB instance + web server instance. However we would like the Web server to sit behind an ELB thus allowing us to use Autoscaling. My question however is how to we replicate the web app across instances? Say for example we have two web servers running and we need to make a critical update to the web app, ultimately we would only want to upload to one instance and not both. Is it even best practice to store your web app on the instance or are there better ways to store and share the app between instances?

For example, User: uid=testadmin, ou=people, dc=my,dc=net Should have access to create new users/delete users under ou=People,dc=my,dc=net I tried with below ACI but did not work (target = "ldap:///ou=People,dc=my,dc=net")(targetattr = "*") (version 3.0;acl "testadmin Permissions";allow (proxy)(userdn = "ldap:///uid=testadmin,ou=people,dc=my,dc=net");) I am able to add administrative users from the Directory Server console, but this user data is not stored in ldif files and only stored in binary database at /var/lib/dirsrv/slap-ldap/db/. Only problem is these users have full power and I am not sure how to restrict their access.

  I would like to know if it's possible to operate different databases on different filesystem locations. Background: we are a hosting service, which hosts mysql, web, and smtp to it's customer, but all our services (sql, smtp, http) are located in a different place. We are going to assign a single logical volume to a customer, which will accommodate the customer's mailing, weppages and (hopefully) sql database. Web pages and mailing are already covered, but I am not able to find a configuration setting which would enable me to specify the location of a database (the directory where mysql stores the DB). Let me please highlight, the target here is to relocate different databases to different locations in the filesystem, not moving them from a single place to an another (single) place. Also please do not bother answering with soft and hard symbolic links. ;) Thanks

• Backup broken PostgreSQL 8.4 without pg_dump

  So. I have a problem. PostgreSQL 8.4 won't start or restart without any output given. But it worked for 3 monthes until hosting provider doesn't rebooted server. Now it is completly broken. It wan't start and doesn't give any output or log. pg_dump: [archiver (db)] connection to database "postgres" failed: No such file or directory Is the server running locally and accepting connections on Unix domain socket "/var/run/postgresql/.s.PGSQL.5432"? Now I want to backup (or just start pgsql socket) my database to reinstall postgesql. How?
