I know that by changing the meta description of my webpage, I can control the texts shown by Google in the search results. However I do not know how I can control the text shown just before the search results, for example the date when the page was last updated. Which meta tag to use to accomplish this? UPDATE: My webpage is automatically updated on a weekly basis on irregular intervals by a cronjob which makes changes to the MySQL database which holds the content of my webpages. So the question is what (meta) info to add to my page.

Object-Oriented equivalent of LISP's progn function?

I'm currently writing a LISP parser that iterates through some AutoLISP code and does its best to make it a little easier to read (changing prefix notation to infix notation, changing setq assignments to "=" assignments, etc.) for those that aren't used to LISP code/only learned object oriented programming. While writing commands that LISP uses to add to a "library" of LISP commands, I came across the LISP command "progn". The only problem is that it looks like progn is simply executing code in a specific order and sometimes (not usually) assigning the last value to a variable. Am I incorrect in assuming that for translating progn to object-oriented understanding that I can simply forgo the progn function and print the statements that it contains? If not, what would be a good equivalent for progn in an object-oriented language?

Python or HTML5/JS for game development on 2014 [on hold]

So I've decided to give game development a go. I have experience on php/html/css/sql/js(jquery) so learning a new language shouldn't be as hard. I was reading that python and javascript are both nice for simple 2d non-intensive games. I found that python has this library/engine called PyGame but I realized that it was last updated 4 years ago. People still use this? And for javascript, I found libraries like 'pixi.js', 'melon.js' and 'cocos2d'. My goal is to make 2D games that would require the same performance as terraria, realm of the mad god, castle crashers.. and all those types of games. Taking into consideration, that I do want an updated library, what language of this two would be best to choose and what library to grab for it? Thanks in advance, sorry if question is broad. Let me know and I can edit to add more.

Firefox, Chrome, and Flash on Ubuntu

Ok I have recently run into some problems and was hoping you guys could help; 1) On Chrome sometimes when I play a video (even on Youtube) the audio won't work (yet other apps audio will work) but after pressing the play button (pausing and unpausing the video) it finally works but if I pause the video and click play it goes back to not working until I re-do that process. 2) When I go to play videos in firefox or go to grooveshark it says I don't have flash; but I do and when I go to install flash it says I have the LAST version for linux but flash works on Chrome fine (well except the audio problem above which annoys me to no end!)

We’ve done this because we started to witness some trends over the last few years. As the average person began to utilize social and mobile technologies more frequently and products commoditized, customer experience truly remained the only sustainable differentiator for businesses.In fact, we have seen that customer experience is often driving the success or the failure of a product or a brand. And as end customers have become more vocal about their experiences with companies on social and mobile channels, they now have the power to decide which brands will win and which brands will lose. To address this customer experience imperative, I believe that business today must do three things really well:Connect with your customers. You have to connect with customers whenever, wherever and however they want. Organizations must provide a great experience on their existing channels— the call center, the brick and mortar store, the field sales organizations, the websites and social properties. Optimistic non-locking copy of InnoDB .frm files

MySQL Enterprise Backup(MEB) does hot backup of innodb data and log files. Till MEB 3.6.1, the user backs up the only innodb tables in a 3 step process: STEP 1. Take backup using --only-innodb option STEP 2. Temporarily make the table read only by executing “FLUSH TABLES WITH READ LOCK” MEB 3.7.0 has an enhancement to innodb file copying. The .frm files gets copied along with the hot backup done for innodb files. I would like to make the blog a little interactive by explaining the feature as answers: 1. What are these .frm files? The files containing the metadata, such as the table definition, of a MySQL table. For backups, the full set of .frm files are always required along with the backup data, to be able to restore tables that are altered or dropped after the backup. 2. Can the .frm files not be copied by MEB itself? --only-innodb-with-frm is the new option introduced in MEB 3.7.1 to do a copy of .frm files without locking the tables during backup operation itself. This is to reduce the pain of manually copying the .frm files. The option is intended for backups where you can ensure that no ALTER TABLE, CREATE TABLE, DROP TABLE, or other DDL statements modify the .frm files for InnoDB tables during the backup operation. 3. How is data consistency ensured? MEB does validation of the .frm files after copying by comparing with the server directory to see if the timestamps of any of the .frm files is greater than the saved system time (check .frm time). This change in timestamp of the .frm files will show if a table is altered during the process of backup. The total number of frm files in the server directory is also verified against the copied contents. If the number of .frm files is less compared to server directory, it shows that table/tables have been dropped during the process of backup. If the number of .frm files is more compared to server directory, it shows that new table/tables have been created during backup operation. 4. How does MEB handle data inconsistency? MEB copies the .frm files through several iterations, does the validation and throws a WARNING if there is any inconsistency found in .frm files at the end of backup operation. This means the user is warned of some DDL operations that had occurred during backup operation, and has to manually copy the .frm files or do a backup again. 5. What is the option and explain its usage? The option introduced is --only-innodb-with-frm which does optimistic copy of .frm files without locking. This can be used when the user wants to backup only innodb tables along with .frm files. The option can take one of the 2 values: all | related. --only-innodb-with-frm=all does copy of all .frm files of all innodb tables. --only-innodb-with-frm=related works in conjunction with --include option.This is to allow partial backup of .frm files corresponding to the tables specified in --include. Why Adobe Air is so underrated for building mobile apps?

I worked with Adobe Flash related technologies for the last 5 years, although not being a big fan of Adobe. I see some little bugs happening in some apps, but I cannot imagine why a lot of big companies do not even think to use use Adobe Air as a good technology for their mobile apps. I see a lot of mobile developer positions asking for experts in Android or iOS , but very much less positions asking for Adobe Air, even when Adobe Air apps have the advantage of being multi-plataform, with the same app working in Blackberry, iOS and Android. Is so much easier to develop a game using Flash, than using Android SDK, for example. It really have flaws (that I never saw) or it is just some kind of mass prejudgement? I also would like to hear what a project manager or a indie developer takes when choosing a plataform for building apps.

matrix 4x4 position data

I understand that a 4x4 matrix holds rotation and position data. The rotation data is held in the 3x3 sub-matrix at the top left of the matrix. The position data is held in the last column of the matrix. e.g. glm::vec3 vParentPos( mParent[3][0], mParent[3][1], mParent[3][2] ); My question is - am I accessing the parent matrix correctly in the example above? I need an advice about SVN usage. I use Tortoise SVN on my client to deal with a project I am working on. The probjem is that I have two set of bugs top fix on the project. One to deploy till 5 days, and one to deploy till 10 days. I am going to solve all the bugs before the 5fth days but I do not want to deploy the last 5 before the release date (till 10 days). How can I work on two separate codes and the merge all the modification? Is it possible? I have to create a branch?

Humor in Documentation

Is a small amount of lighthearted wording or humor acceptable in source code documentation? For example, I have an algorithm that has a message hop around a graph (network) until its path forms a cycle. When this happens it is removed from the queue of the node it last resided on which removes it from memory. I write that in a comment, and finish the comment with "Rest in peace, little guy". That serves very little documenting purpose, but it cheers me up a bit, and I imagine it might cheer up other people I'm working with as they read through the code. Is this an acceptable practice, or should my in-code documentation resemble as much as possible the speeches of 2004 United States presidential candidate John Kerry? ;-)

Why does Google report a soft 404 when I redirect to the signup page?

In the last month, I've got an increased number of "soft 404" errors reported by Google webmaster tools which actually work well for users. Configuration (maybe useless): I have a website built with rails 3.1 Authentication is handled by the gem Devise Problem: On this page http://en.bemyboat.com/yacht-charter/9965-sailboat-beneteau-oceanis-43 Click on "Ask a Boat request" (a simple form, in GET to: http://en.bemyboat.com/boat_requests/new/9965) You are redirected with the HTTP status 302 to sign in You are then sent back to the new page if successfully sign in. Google tells me that the link on "ask a boat request" returns a soft 404. I can't make this form in "POST" (which will solve the problem) because we need to automatically redirect users back to the page after sign in. (the Gem Devise memorizes the "get" link.) To simplify, the question is: How to protect a private page with authentication, reached with a simple "GET" and not to be penalized by Google as a "soft 404".

AdSense CPM and content topics

I run a few blogs on topics like programming, linux tips and network security. I noticed the following: Till last year had only 1 blog that had posts on PHP, linux tips, network security etc. The AdSense RPM was around 1.00. Then I split the content into 3 separate blogs, one focused on web development/PHP/MySQL. second one focused on Linux/Windows how-tos and tips and third one focused on network security and related network topics. The Adsense RPM rose significantly for 2 blogs, and was 1.38 (PHP blog), 0.87 (tech tips blog) and 1.90 (network security blog). In the month of april 2013 the site on network security had the highest traffic and the Adsense income of that site was twice that of all three sites combined previously. My question is simple, does focusing on one topic lead to higher CPC/CPM?

SSIS Reporting Pack v0.4 – Execution Report updated

SSIS Reporting Pack is a suite of reports that I maintain at http://ssisreportingpack.codeplex.com/ that provide visualisation over the SSIS Catalog in SQL Server 2012 and attempt to add value over the reports that ship in the box. Work on the reports has stalled (my last SSIS Reporting Pack blog post was on 4th September 2011) as I’ve had rather more important things going on my life of late however I have recently checked-in a fix that couldn’t really be delayed. Unfortunately, as I alluded, this could under certain circumstances (most likely when there were many loop iterations) cause the report to hang as it waited for the results to be constructed and returned. The change that I have made eradicates this generation of “fake” executables and thus produces this visualisation instead: Notice that the three “children” of the For Each Loop are no longer the three iterations but actually the task (“EPT Call Data Export Package”) contained within that For Each Loop. The problem here is of course that there is no longer a visual distinction between those three iterations; I have instead made the full execution path viewable via a tooltip: If you preferred the “old” way of presenting this information and are happy to put up with the performance degradation then I have kept the old version of the report hanging around in the reporting pack as “execution loop with iterations” however none of the other reports link to it so you will have to browse to it manually if you want to use it. Please let me know if you ARE using it – I would be very interested to hear about your experiences. The last change to make you aware of in the execution report is that by default I no longer show OnPreValidate or OnPostValidate messages as I consider them to be superfluous and only serve to clutter up the results. If you want to put them back, well, its open source so go right ahead!
