• How to revert to "last known good configuration"

  Hi Guys. I failed to install ubuntu 10.04 with WUBI, for some reason it's showing me the root partion is not defined. I'm bored to fight with it so I just removed ubuntu in windows. However this installation made my original Windows XP cripple, a normal boot will end up with a blue screen, error code 7E, I'm still able to boot with the 'last known good configuration' tho. My understanding is booting like this will recover things and I'm supposed to be good when reboot, while this is not the case for me, I have to choose the 'boot from last known good configuration' each and every time to work around the blue screen. Could you suggest how could I resolve this? I feel it's foolish having to waste 10 more seconds each time starting the OS.

• Online File Sharing that acts just like LAN shared drives, etc.

  Hi All, Have a small business client that wants to move their current file share to the web. Specs are as follows, 20 to 30 GB of space, file sizes are normal (nothing more than 50 to 100 mb) 3 users ideal solution would be exact same functionality as windows explorer. CHEAP!!! But not super cheap. I would like to keep it around $20 per user per month. I've explored a bunch of solutions, but they are all a bit on the complicated side. • Ubuntu server hangs on reboot "could not stat resume device file"

  Instead of booting into the running system this machine stops and on the terminal I can see a message: could not stat resume device file /dev/sdb5 When I attach a keyboard and press enter the boot continues and the machine comes up like normal. But it's essential that this machine comes up under most circumstancs alone. There never was something like a "resume" on this machine. I tried several times to reboot, but this does not happen on all boots, I can not find a pattern here. There is a software raid running on the box. • users unable to add registry keys to HKCU

  I may not have this 100% correct so need some clarification. Are normal users on a 2003 terminal server allowed to add registry keys the their own HKCU section in the registry, or are they only allowed to edit existing ones? The reason I ask is that we have 3 keys that we need to add for each user on login. I thought it would be as simple as having a straightforward batchscript run that silently adds the keys for the user. Here is what I used: regedit.exe "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop\example.reg" When the user runs this batch scipt, they see nothing as you would expect, but the keys are not added. If I simply run the .reg file as the user, it asks if I want to add the key, but then has an error saying there was an error accessing the registry. Do I need something a bit more complex to accomplish this task. • How to analyse logs after the site was hacked

  One of our web-projects was hacked. Malefactor changed some template files in project and 1 core file of the web-framework (it's one of the famous php-frameworks). We found all corrupted files by git and reverted them. So now I need to find the weak point. With high probability we can say, that it's not the ftp or ssh password abduction. The support specialist of hosting provider (after logs analysis) said that it was the security hole in our code. My questions: 1) What tools should I use, to review access and error logs of Apache? (Our server distro is Debian). 2) Can you write tips of suspicious lines detection in logs? Maybe tutorials or primers of some useful regexps or techniques? 3) How to separate "normal user behavior" from suspicious in logs. 4) Is there any way to preventing attacks in Apache?   I have a web site using mod_rewrite to get some clean urls and custom 404 pages. My .htaccess file looks like this: <IfModule mod_rewrite.c> RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteRule ^(.*)$ index.php?clean_url=$1 [QSA,L] </IfModule> What puzzles me is that if the URL contains a %2F (url-encoded /) the server seems to force a 404. As an example, http://example.com/category/article would be a normal article, but then http://example.com/category%2farticle gives a server-generated 404 page. (not the custom 404 page) I wouldn't have expected this... why this is happening? Is there a way around it?

  How do I write the htaccess so that it will only require authentication when on admin.example.com, but not on www.example.com (like by using some if-else clause)? Background: I have a site running in two modes: The admin mode should be reached at something like admin.example.com, whereas the normal mode would be www.example.com -- but both should point to the same directory & scripts within them (the scripts then turn on certain editing features by checking if the script is accessed from the admin subdomain). Edit: I can now see this has been asked and answered at StackOverflow, though I can't get the top answer to work for me...

• Dovecot/Postfix-mysql e-mail Aliases are not correctly forwarded

  I recently set up Dovecot/postfix-mysql on my Debian Squeeze Server and I have a bit of a problem. When ever I send a email to an alias ([email protected] forwarded to [email protected] for example) Postfix (or Dovecot, I'm not quite sure) puts this email into a Mailbox rather than forwarding it to the real Mail-Adress. I have tested all the MySQL queries and they all behave the way I intend them to do. foobar dovecot: deliver([email protected]): msgid=<000001385b464c9a-e40af11e-3bf4-49f6-903d-1d2369f6bfb6-000000@barfoo: saved mail to INBOX master.cf main.cf Keep in mind that normal E-Mail sending and receiving works just fine! I have set up my MySQL Tables with Postfixadmin. Thanks for your help!

• Ubuntu server: lost prompt on monitor

  Hello All, I am running Ubuntu 9.04 server edition. I have a monitor plugged into the box for occasional admin tasks. I pulled out a USB disk (without unmounting) and the screen is now full with this message: Buffer I/O error on device sdc1, logical block 7778778 I can't seem to clear the screen or get a prompt back. Doesn't appear to be registering keyboard strokes. The box is still running fine (I can ssh in from elsewhere and evrything is running as normal). Any ideas on how to clear screen and get my prompt back?

• OS X can't resolve localhost suddenly

  Last week I fired up a website that I'm currently developing locally only to find out that it wasn't working as it was the night before, (or at all). After an inital stage of panic and 'what did I do' moments... I deduced the problem down to the fact that my OS X now wont resolve localhost properly, so connections to my SQL database were failing. I can still ping localhost in the terminal, but in order to get my websites up and running again, I had to change all the localhost entries to 127.0.0.1 This isn't a huge problem as everything is up and running again, but I would like to try to get to the bottom of it. I have a sneaking suspicion that an apple software update caused this issue, as I don't recall doing anything else that would have had any effect. Other than my hosts file (which looks normal), what else could be causing this? Running OSX 10.6.4

• Is it possible to use the IE10 App without making Internet Explorer the default browser?

  Windows 8 comes with two versions of Internet Explorer: the normal desktop version, which looks just like IE9, and the Modern UI version, which is a full-screen tablet-style app. By default, links opened in desktop mode open in desktop IE, and links opened in Modern UI apps open in the full-screen app. When you set a new default browser (like Google Chrome, which has a Modern UI mode now), you can no longer access IE10 in the Modern UI at all - the tile disappears from the start screen, and there's no way to manually invoke it. I don't use IE10 much, but I'd like to have access to it in Metro mode, because it's handy for testing things out. I don't want to have IE be my default browser though. Is there any way to get the IE10 "App" to show up without setting IE to be the default browser everywhere?

• No virtual console on ubuntu 12.10

  When I try to do a ctr-alt f(1-6) in ubuntu 12.10 I only get a black screen with a blinking cursor but no login prompt. Any ideas on what could be wrong? • Monitoring server room temperature

  I have a small server room with its own AC unit. Recently, the AC died, and the temperature increased from 70 F to 90 F. We rarely go in this room, so I was lucky that someone happened to notice that the fans were running a lot louder than normal as they walked past the door. It looks like I need a way to be notified when the temperature in that room gets too hot. What tools are you using to monitor the temperature in your server room? How does this tool notify you of a problem (email, SNMP, etc). Note: I've read this question on server temperature, but I'm interested in the whole room, not just the inside of a server case. Edit: Thanks for all the great responses so far! Many of these products measure much more than just temperature. What else should I be looking at and why?

• Windows application shortcut icon cannot be removed

  I recently installed an application on my Windows 7 desktop. After the install this application created a strange icon on my desktop which cannot be removed/deleted or renamed. I find this quite intrusive and I keep wondering if this is a normal/legal case... Is an application allowed to do this? I don't remember having an option to allow this "Chuck Norris" icon on my desktop. Any information on this will be highly appreciated. Edit: What this icon does is when you drag over a file it applies some "deep removal" of it. It's context menu is limited to "Open" (which does nothing) and "Create shortcut"

• How do I reset the $PATH variable on Mac OS X?

  I've messed up my path variable, and now some apps that I run raise errors saying Command Not Found (error 127) for commands like 'date' and 'sleep'. These commands work fine when executed directly in the shell. I'm guessing this has something to do with a malformed $PATH variable, and need to know how to reset it. I've deleted the files ~/.bashrc , ~/.bash_profile, /etc/bash.bashrc, and ~/.bashrc and ~/.profile. What other files could hold my $PATH? Is there some simpler way to reset the Path than dig into the myriad files which could hold my path? Note, this path problem is only with my user. I made a test user on my system, and the path was fine, back to normal.

• Context is Hindi when printing line numbers in Word 2007

  I'm trying to print a Word 2007 document with Line Numbering turned on, and in Word the document looks fine but when I print the document, the line numbers appear in Hindi script. I also tried using different printers. The problem goes away if I choose Arabic instead of Context under Word Options - Advanced - Show Document Content / Numeral. However, I would like to keep this setting as Context. The question is, why is the default context of my document Hindi script? Is there a way to change this context?

• Using Folder Redirection GPO and Offline Files and Folders

  I want to use Folder Redirection to redirect user's My Documents to a network share. First question is: What is best practices for mapping the drive? Should I use the profile tab in AD with the %username% variable, or a net use logon script, or something else? Second question is: How do I deal with laptops and syncing the network with the local storage? I want to have 2-way syncing so if they manually map their networked home drive and edit it from a different computer, it will sync the newer version to their My Documents folder the next time they connect their normal work computer. I also want to be sure that if they edit a file offline on their laptop while away from the office, that the network version syncs the changes the next time they connect that laptop. Please advise best practices for this scenario in a 2008 R2/Win7 environment. I am also interested in Mac clients for this environment, and while I am very Mac savvy, I would like to hear what others consider to be best practices for Mac network homedirs in a Win environment.

  I explain my case: I'm at Amazon AWS and I want to be fault tolerant on a entire region failure. My basic problem is to have the db in sync with 2 regions. My options: Master-Master (high lag) Hand made sync every 5 minutes Master-ColdMaster?! (copy on the fly but Master won't wait the other region commit) In my system we could afford loosing a piece of data (we're not a bank) the last inserts in the db, but we could not afford more than 10 minutes of downtime. The database is small and the level of inserts is low, and I wouldn't affect the normal usage waiting other region commit. Is the 3 solution posible? And the most important, once the primary fail how we can detect and change the rol between master-coldmaster -- coldmaster-master ? Is there any clean-mode to restore between failure? Thank's!

• Sound problems in Windows 7

  hi! I hope I reached the correct forum for this question. I have a media computer with a third party audio card (Soundblaster audigy SE) I use a coaxial digital audio cable connected to a Onkyo TX SR508. if I use normal audio, the sound seems very low, I have to set volume atleast to 62 in my amplifier to hear anything, however if I set digital SPDIF I have no means of controlling the audio volume from the PC (only from the amplifier) and this can be nasty if I toggle between movies that uses Digital AC3/THX and movies wihtouth, if I look at movies capable of AC3 the volume gets VERY loud if amp is set to 62, 32 is more than enough volume when using passthrough. so this bothers me is how can I get the same amount of volume with or without digital output? I tried also other soundcards, internal red light Digital audio cable... if I connect to my television I get ok sound on any sound source via HDMI... help :)

  I have the following setup: 1 x Management Node (node A) 2 x Compute Nodes (node B & C) 1 x Volume Node (node D) Relevant configurations: VlanManager multi_host=true Node B[eth0=192.168.6.102;br100=10.1.0.6] Node C [eth0=192.168.6.103;br100=10.1.0.4] I can ping between instances on the same node,but not with instances in different nodes. If I run "brctl br100 eth0" , Instances can ping between nodes, but I loose conectivity on eth0 (192.168.6.102/192.168.6.103) What do I have to change to be able to ping instances between nodes while maintaining normal connectivity on eth0 ?

• Can a switch consume bandwidth?

  I have a network with a router and a switch. At first my ISP's optical fiber is connected with media converter input port. Than Ethernet cable (output port of Media converter) is connected with the switch. Then an output Ethernet cable is connected with our inner Microtik router. Then this router is connected with another LAN switch. From this switch we have got every connection other switch. It is our total network structure. Our bandwidth is 2 Mbps. From the 11th of March our MRTG graph shows high all the time even when my all switch is switched off except LAN switch. That's why our line is breaking up (Voice call). How could be it possible? My all PC's bandwidth is limited but when connected PC with media converter directly then the graph shows normal. That's why I can't blame my ISP.

  I don't remember modifying CentOS useradd to get this behavior. useradd in CentOS creates the user's home directory with all the normal files (like .bashrc). I modified /etc/default/useradd to make it looks like CentOS (just required some uncommenting) except for Ubuntu having SHELL=/bin/sh instead of SHELL=/bin/bash How do I make useradd act like it does in CentOS? Is there some existing option to change? Or should I just add an alias to /etc/bash.bashrc? The difference: On Ubuntu, useradd is not creating the home directory. as root: $ useradd test $ cd ~test -su: cd: /home/test: No such file or directory

  I'd like to setup a squid instance to do selective reverse proxy for a configured list of URLs whilst acting as a normal forward proxy for everything else. We are building new infrastructure, parallel live as it where, and I want to have a proxy that people can use that will force selective traffic into the new platform whilst just acting as a forward proxy for anything else. This makes it very easy for people/systems to test the portions of the new platform we want without having to change too much, just use a proxy address. Is such a setup possible ?

• How to share malicious source code?

  I have a client whose site (not one i developed) is infected by a trojan/malicious code. I have asked him to send me the dirty files in a zip but either gmail or unzipping is blocking them. I've tried text files and word files, and i'm suspecting many different file types will be blocked the same way, either by my mail client, anti-malware software, browser etc. (which is normal). Do you know a way he could share those lines so i can read them and do some research about the malicious source code? An image/screenshot of his text editor would be an idea but the files are long + i'd prefer to be able to copy/paste from them. Thank you!
