• Windows 7 libraries missing from start menu?

  I was trying to stop an annoying error where renaming a new folder in Windows 7 (Starter OEM via Toshiba) would bring up the dreaded "cannot find item" error. I was lead to uninstall Windows update KB980408 with the added registry fix. Well, now the problem is still unfixed, but worse, all the libraries have vanished from the right side of my start menu! This is a pretty aggravating state of affairs, and I've already tried a system restore, adding back in some registry keys, changing preferences...the smash. Funnily enough, libraries are still in explorer and I can see that according to preferences they are displaying, but...nada. Any suggestions?

• How do you get around security warnings when redirecting AppData?

  I've recently set up folder redirection for my user profile in a domain. For now, I've redirected AppData, Desktop, Pictures, Documents and Favorites. So far, so good. But now I've noticed a quite disturbing side effect of the whole thing. Whenever I click any of my pinned elements on the task bar, I get the following warning: The shortcuts get synced as well and are no longer trusted. They're located at \\DFS\UserData\Profiles\OliverSalzburg\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar That seems like it could be a problem when rolling it out to the whole company.

• Adding a Windows Server 2012 Essentials server to an existing domain, without migrating the AD

  I have an existing Active Directory in house, a mix between a Win2K8R2 and Win2K3 domain, and i would like to test out Windows Server 2012 Essentials BETA on the network. When walking though the install, it gives me the option of a new domain, or migrating from an existing domain. when clicking existing, it tells me i can only have one SBS server running on a domain at a time... So, i dont have any existing SBS servers in house (both are full standard or enterprise editions) but i do plan on keeping at least one of these extra servers running... So, how do i get a 2012 Essentials server to join a domain, and not migrate the existing domain? or if i do migrate, can i still get one of the other boxes to act as secondary controllers?

• SVN command that returns wether a user has a valid login for a repository?

  Hi there, I'm trying to find out an SVN command that would return some kind of true / false value depending on wether the user running it has access to a given repository. I'm building a tool for automated deployment and part of the process is checking out the code from the SVN repository. I'd like to find out if the user running the tool has a valid login already. If there's no valid login, just show a message and exit the tool (handling the SVN login internally is not an option at the moment). Plan B would be parsing the file in svn.simple looking for the repo URL, but thought about asking first. Thanks, Juan

• How can I get Windows 7 to remember program windows size and position?

  I can open Outlook and it fills about half of the screen. I then maximize it to read some mail and then minimize it to do some other work. When I click on it again in the taskbar, it is back to the original size that it opened at. I have tried Ctrl-close and Ctrl-maximize but neither seems to work. This also happens with Explorer windows, AutoCAD, Revit, and other programs that I work with. Shouldn't a minimize and a maximize bring the window back to the last size and position?

• Setting up Kerberos SSO in Windows 2008 network

  We recently introduced Kerberos (SPNEGO) Single Sign-on in our web-portal, and tested it on a Windows network with Windows 2003 domain controller. Now, trying to test it on Windows 2008 R2 controlled network, SSO just doesn't work due to defective tokens. Up to the moment I was pretty sure that there's something wrong about environment and that were NTLM tokens. We double checked IE settings etc, but nothing helped. Then we checked the following settings for both users (logged on a client test-machine, and the one used as a Service Principal): This account supports Kerberos AES 128 bit encryption. This account supports Kerberos AES 256 bit encryption. .. and error message changed to ' GSSException: Failure unspecified at GSS-API level (Mechanism level: Encryption type AES256CTS mode with HMAC SHA1-96 is not supported/enabled) It makes me think that Internet Explorer receives Kerberos tokens at all times, and there's just some configuration missing, or it was ktpass.exe to be incorrectly executed. • Vertical text inside table headers using a JavaScript-based SVG library

  I use jqGrid with many columns containing boolean information, which are displayed as checkboxes inside the table (see http://www.ok-soft-gmbh.com/VerticalHeaders/TestFixedO.htm as an example). To display information more compactly I use vertical column headers. It works very well and works in jqGrid in all browsers (see my discussion with Tony Tomov in jqGrid forum http://www.trirand.com/blog/?page_id=393/feature-request/headers-with-vertical-orientation/), but in IE vertical text is blurred and doesn't look nice enough (open the link above in IE and you will see exactly what I mean). I was asked from users why the text displayed so strangely. So I'm thinking of using a JavaScript-based SVG library like SVG Web ( http://code.google.com/p/svgweb/ ) or Raphaël ( http://raphaeljs.com/ ). SVG is very powerful and it is difficult to find a good example. I need only to display vertical text (-90 grad, from the bottom up) and use if possible without working in mode of absolute positioning. So one more time my question: I need to have a possibility to display vertical text (-90 grad rotation) inside <td> elements of a table header. I want to use a JavaScript-based SVG library like SVG Web or Raphaël. The solution must support IE6. Does anybody have a good reference example which could help me do this? If somebody posts a whole solution of the problem I would be happy. • Using sed to convert hex characters in postgresql dump file

  I am working on moving several databases from a Postgresql 8.3 server to a Postgresql 8.4 server. It has worked fine so far, but one base has given me some trouble. The database is listed as unicode-encoded in the 8.3-server, but somehow a client program has managed to inject some invalid unicode data into it. When I do a normal dump and restore using postgres' custom format, the new server won't accept it, complaining about unicode errors. My plan is to do a plain text dump of the database, then use sed to replace the invalid characters with nothing (they are not needed). But how do you make sed work on hex/binary values in a file?

• Chrome and Firefox freeze when I begin typing

  Last night, chrome began freezing whenever I tried to type anything. After a fresh reinstall the problem went away but it is back again this morning. I installed Firefox as a substitute browser but it has the same problem. I cannot even get past the homepage because typing in the u r l bar freezes both programs. Last night internet explorer froze once too, but it has not happened since. Disabling shock-wave does not have any affect on the problem. Because it is happening across multiple browsers, I do not believe it to be caused by any extensions I have installed on Chrome. I also tried running Chrome as a new user and the problem still occurred. I can open any apps or web sites that are on my homepage, but as soon as I try to type anything the program freezes. Any ideas?

• Wine not finding some files

  I'm having strange issues with Wine : If I look a C:\windows\system32\drivers\ in wine explorer, the directory looks empty, while the directory ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32/drivers is not. Plus, having the H: drive mapped to my home directory, I can look at H:\.wine\drive_c\windows\system32\drivers and it is not empty, the files are here ! Thus it seems Wine has the rights to access these files. So why don't they appear on the C: drive ? Some of my programs need them. • Hard Drive missing drive space

  I have a 500 GB hard drive which I previously attached to my Mac. I detached the drive without going through the eject procedure. When I did this a message showed up, which of course I did not read. I could not use the drive until I formatted again. Now, when I attach the drive it says it is formatted NTFS and has 280.39 of 500 GB free. When I open the drive in Windows Explorer, Finder, or in Linux, is only shows a handful of files totaling 54 MB. How can I find out what is taking up all the space.

• esx 4 - c7000 - cisco 3020

  I have 4 blades with esx 4 installed in a HP c7000 enclosure. They have 6 cisco 3020 for hp switches in the backend. The plan was to use 2 switches for iSCSI traffic and the other 4 for data traffic. I am having a problem trunking the switches to our existing environment. The documentation i keep finding online has commands/features that are not available on the 3020 switch. Does anyone have this setup anywhere? I am looking to do Virtual Switch Tagging (VST) so i can control the machines vlan via the port groups. The only time any configuration worked for us was when our network team placed the command switchport native vlan x this setup only allowed vlan x to pass traffic and only when the port group was in vlan 0. • automatic reply rule within Outlook

  My plan is to add a automatic reply to all incoming emails for a exchange mailbox. I created a rule that would check all incoming and created the template reply. Created it so it would match a server rule so outlook would not have to be open. If I send an email from my work account on the same exchange server, it works and sends the reply I created. With outlook open or closed. However, when I send email from outside the company, (my personal email), it does not get a reply. What the heck is going on there? I think the issue is within the selection of who the email is too. I have tried "only to me" "where my name is in TO or CC" as well as "sent to people or distribution list". So any ideas of why this isn't working. I thought this question was a super user question as appose to server fault. Thank you,

• MySql calculate number of connections needed

  I am trying to figure my needs regarding web service hosting. After trying Azure I have realized that the default MySql they provide (through a third party) limits the account to 4 connections. You can then upgrade the account to 15, 30 or 40 connections (which is quite expensive). Their 15 connections plan is descirbed as: "Excellent choice for light test and staging apps that need a reliable MySQL database". I have 2 questions: if my application is a web service which needs to preform ~120k Queries a day (Normal/BELL distribution) and each query is ~150ms(duration)/~400ms(fetch), how many connection do I need? If instead of using cloud computing, I will choose a VPS, how many connections will I be able to handle on a 1GB 2 cores VPS? Thank you!

  I want to build a web application/server with this structure: main-server sub-server transaction-server (create, update, delete) view-server (view, search) authentication-server documents-server reporting-server library-server e-learning-server The main-server acts as host server for sub-server. I can add many sub-servers and connect it to main-server (via plug-play interface maybe), then it can begin querying data from another sub-servers (which has been connected to the main-server). The sub-servers can be anywhere as long as connected to internet. The main-server can manage all sub-servers which are connected to it (query data, setting permission between sub-servers, etc). The purpose is simple, the web application will be huge as the company grows, so I want to distribute it into small connected plug-able servers. My question is, does the structure above already have a standardized method? or are there any different views? what are the technologies needed? I need a lot of researches before the execution plan begin. thanks a lot.

• Debugging an IP Camera

  Further to my previous question on ServerFault here, I finally can view the stream on RTSP however I still cannot view the camera stream in a web browser. The IP camera uses an activeX control in Internet Explorer. And although I can configure the camera settings from IE, I cannot view the stream it shows connecting for a few sec and shows disconnecting. I have forwarded the HTTP, RTSP and Stream ports of the IP camera. the public port is 7071 and private port is 7070. When I try to see the connections in TCPView it shows that the ActiveX control in IE is trying to connect to port 7070 which is quite unusual since it should connect to 7071 Also the state shows SYN_SENT for sometime and then disconnects. I have really no clue what's going on and why?

• Shared resources in Windows Server 2008 were lost

  We have an Oracle database in Windows Server 2003, which has its archived redo logs stored on a shared resource of a Windows Server 2008: \\192.168.1.189\d$\folder_for_archivedlogs However, according to Oracle's alert.log, at 10:01 p.m that shared resource got lost and the database was inaccessible. From my Windows Server 2003, on Windows Explorer, I couldn't access that shared resource, but I got a response when I did ping 192.168.1.189. I reviewed all the Event Logs on that Windows 2008, but there is no error at 10:00pm or 11:00pm. Has anyone seen some similar case before? (Shared resources get lost, but you still can ping the server and there are no error events in the Event Logs).

• Brightness too dark or too bright

  Basically, below a seemingly-arbitrary threshold (seems to be around 60%) my laptop screen is too dark to really make out much, and above that threshold it takes its maximum brightness (which is waay too bright for my eyes). This problem only occurs when I change the brightness using Windows' UI. Changing the brightness using Fn keys on my keyboard works as expected; unless the screen went into dark mode because of Windows, in which case they have no effect. This problem started occuring on my ASUS laptop very recently. My laptop has a poor battery, but I don't think that's related. What is going on? I tried resetting power plan settings, turning off adaptive brightness and restarting. I'll give any info asked for. Help required urgently...

• Is an eee-pc with an Atom N550 dual core OK for Rails 3 development?

  I'm buying an Asus eee-pc 1015PEM and hope to do test-driven Rails 3 development on it. Is the CPU fast enough or too painfully slow for this? I plan on installing Ubuntu. I currently develop on a 11 inch Macbook Air 2010 model. It works fine as a Rails development machine. But for some reason I'm drawn to developing on a cheap little netbook. I don't use any IDE's, and my development workflow is mostly switching between Vim, Gnu Screen, and bash.

• How to step down voltage from 208V to 110V

  I have some racks that will be fed by 208V/20A circuits. These circuits will be conditioned and battery-backed by the facility in which these racks will live. 99% of the devices in the rack will be able to support 208V input, so I plan to use these PDUs. However, there may be one or two odd devices that will need 110V input. I know that I can use a step-down transformer to provide 110V for these devices, but that seems like overkill for such a small number of devices, plus I don't want to pay extra for the UPS functionality since my power will already be battery-backed. Any suggestions for something I can use for these one-off 110V devices?

• ATI Radeon Drivers works with which linux distribution and version?

  I have ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5850 graphics card. Almost every new linux distribution seems to have an issue with it, when i install the drivers. Working without utilizing the graphics card leaves me so unproductive. So i made a plan to use older versions of linux, any distribution suitable as a desktop distribution. UPDATE: The kind of problems that i am facing are, 1) After installing drivers the system boots and hangs, 2) There are unusual lines over the screen 3) After upgrade system doesn't start properly(hangs the usual old way) The kind of answers i am looking for is, distribution X(the newer the version the better) doesn't have the above problem after installing drivers for ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5850 graphics card. UPDATE: The new drivers released by AMD seems to fix all the issues, although they are still beta Thanks

• Highly Available Web Application (LAMP)

  I work for a small company who provides a web application for thousands of users. Earlier this year they had one server hosted one company. We recently acquired another server in a different location with the hopes of one day making this a redundant failover machine. I understand what to do with the mysql replication, I plan on using a master-master replication setup, and rsync to sync the scripts and files, however I am at a stand still about how to configure the fail-over. Ideally I would like the two machines to accept requests, like a round robin dns, however if one machine goes down I do not want requests to go that machine. All of the solutions I am come across assumes high availability of servers in the same location, these servers are in two completely different locations with different public ip address. Any help would be great. Thanks
