So, what are the performance/optimisation pros/cons to using multi column primary keys versus a basic single column, auto-inc primary key?

  • Max number of web methods?

    Guys I have a web service in asp.net 2.0 that has 234 methods. It seems that when I add another method the site does not compile in VS2005 until I remove one first. I get a message saying that the new method I just added does not exist in a file that belongs in the Microsoft.Net/.../Temporary Files directory. I have restarted IIS, closed down VS2005, removed all files from this temp directory but to no avail. The only way to get the code to compile is to remove another one so as to keep 234 methods.... I can consistency replicate this behaviour so it cannot be my code. Now I know this seems strange but it is true! One other strange thing is that exactly 100 of the method names begin with the word GetXXXyyyZZZ Has anyone else experienced problems with the maximum number of methods that are allowed in a web service?     I've been handed a rather large, old, and crusty Access 2000/2003 database to clean up. I'll need to rename a number of tables and fields, but need to do so in a way that doesn't break existing queries. (Fortunately, there are no macros, forms, or reports to worry about.) I've heard there are some commercial tools to make this job easier, but only found one (http://www.rickworld.com/products.html). Can anyone recommend this software, or any alternatives?

    I have 3 TextReaders -- a combination of StreamReaders and StringReaders. Conceptually, the concatenation of them is a single text document. I want to call a method (not under my control) that takes a single TextReader. Is there any built-in or easy way to make a concatenating TextReader from multiple TextReaders? (I could write my own TextReader subclass, but it looks like a fair amount of work. In that case, I'd just write them all out to a temp file and then open it with a single StreamReader.) Is there an easy solution to this that I'm missing?

Is it possible without looping? Probably not.

    I am currently html encoding all user entered text before inserting/updating a db table record. The problem is that on any subsequent updates, the previously encoded string is reencoded. This endless loop is starting to eat up alot of column space in my tables. I am using parameterized queries for all sql statements but am wondering would it be safe to just let the .NET Framework handle this part without the HTML Encoding?
