• What is the most likely cause to a Blue Screen of Death when the user presses Ctrl-Alt-Delete?

  My wife is experiencing this with her work laptop--she presses Ctrl-Alt-Delete to lock and she gets the BSOD. The first troubleshooting step is usually to "re-image", and it's locked down. So with this question, I am asking whether the behavior is unique enough that someone in the stack-universe knows exactly what this is (something I can tell her to tell her help desk support). Update: help desk said to order more RAM. Alt-tabbing caused the same behavior today. And...she learned that multiple users are affected. I'm not sure I'll be able to clean any additional info that will help w/ troubleshooting. I'll leave the question here for a bit and if an answer ends up being the actual solution, I'll accept it. If not, I think I should probably remove the question (i'll check meta). Update #2.5: The cause appears to be a ctrl-alt-delete keystroke while Sales Team Configurator is open. This can either be to lock the screen (there are workaround in answers already present) or to unlock the screen (no workaround for that).

• Authlogic and password and password confirmation attributes - inaccessible?

  Im trying to test my successfully creates a new user after login (using authlogic). Ive added a couple of new fields to the user so just want to make sure that the user is saved properly. The problem is despite creating a valid user factory, whenever i try to grab its attributes to post to the create method, password and password confirmation are being ommitted. I presuem this is a security method that authlogic performs in the background. This results in validations failing and the test failing. Im wondering how do i get round this problem? • How can I restrict a user's time spent on internet?

  I see related questions on how to restrict access to certain websites but that is not really what I want. Here's my situation: My baby sitter wants access to the internet but we we don't want her spending hours on the computer and neglecting our infant children. Thus, I want to be able to restrict her surfing to 30 minutes a session, with sessions being at least 3 hours apart. I do not care to restrict the content. Does anyone know what is the best way to implement this? Thanks.

• What are some of the best wireless routers for a price-conscious home power-user?

  I'm extremely dissatisfied with the 'popular' choice for routers in homes and small offices. They are expensive (upwards of 60$), lack a great deal of useful configuration options, and seem to need to be restarted quite often. (Linksys comes to mind). I've been on the market for a good router lately, and slowly collecting a set of requirements I feel good routers should meet. Maximum number of TCP/IP connections. - This isn't something I see any routers advertise, but in terms of supporting torrent applications, I've been screwed by routers that support less than 20 here. From what I understand a fairly standard number is 200, but there are not so expensive routers that support thousands. Router configuration menu - Most have standard menu's that let you set up basic things like your wireless network encryption settings, uPnP, and maybe even DMZ (demilitarized zones). An absolute requirement for me, however, are routers with good enough firmware to support: Explicit Port forwarding Assigning static local ips to specific mac addresses, or at least Port forwarding by MAC address Port, IP and MAC filtering Dynamic DNS service for home users who want to set up a server but have a dynamic IP Traffic shaping (ideally) - giving priority to packets from certain machines or over certain ports. Strong wireless signal - If getting a reliable signal requires me to be so close to the router that I can connect an Ethernet cable, it's not good enough. As many Ethernet ports as possible. - Because I want to be able to switch from console gaming to PC gaming without visiting my router. So far, the best thing I've stumbled upon (in the bargain bin at staples) was a 20$ retail plus router. It was meant to be the cheapest alternative until I could find something better to purchase online, but I was actually blown away by the firmware capabilities. It supports defining reserved bandwidth for certain network traffic, dynamic DNS, reserving local IPs for specific MAC addresses, etc. At 2 am when my roommate is killing our Internet with their torrents, I can limit their bandwidth without outright blacklisting them. I have, however, met serious limitations when it comes to network traffic between local machines. It claims a 300Mbps connection, but I have trouble streaming videos from my PC to my console or other laptops wirelessly. It has a meltdown and needs to be reset once in a while (no more than a couple times a month), and it's got a 200 connection limit. There 4 Ethernet ports in the back but I'm pretty sure the first doesn't work. So some great answers to this question would be: Any metrics you use to compare routers, and requirements you have for new candidates. The best routers you've found for supporting home servers, file management systems, high volume torrent traffic, good price/feature ratio, etc. Good configuration advice (aside from 'use Ethernet whenever possible') Thanks for your feedback and experiences!

If its nil, then it simply displays all of the solutions on my site, but if its not nil, then it displays all of the solutions for the given user id. • Can you share offline files cache with two user accounts?

  I have a new laptop that I use for both home and work. It runs windows 7 ultimate, and is joined to the domain at work. It is okay to use this laptop for both work and personal activities, and I even have an account set up on the local machine in addition to the work domain account specifically for this to help keep the two separate. At home, I have a file server that I use to share files and printers with my wife's laptop, this new laptop, and my old desktop which will now become the family machine. My mp3 library is on there, among other things. What I want to do is use the windows Offline Files feature to keep a synced copy of my music library on the laptop. That part is easy. What's tricky is that I want to share this offline cache between both the local account on the laptop and my work domain account. I could do them both separately, but then I have two copies of a very large music library stored locally. This also means twice the sync burden, when the domain account is rarely connected to the file share. I really want to be able to sync from the local machine account only, and have the domain account be able to use the synced files. I know where the offline file cache is kept (\Windows\CSC) and I can find the cached files (not encrypted), but permissions on the cache are setup weird, and so using that cache directly is not trivial. Any ideas appreciated.

• System halts for a fraction of second after every 2-3 seconds

  I'm using Windows 7 on my HP ProBook 4250s. The problem I face is that my system halts for a fraction of second after every 2-3 seconds. These jerks are not letting me concentrate or work properly. This happens even when I'm just typing in notepad while no other application is running. I tried to install every driver from HP's website and there's no item in device manager marked with yellow icon.   With CLLocationManager I can use the following code to determine if I can access location services on the device. This is the master setting for all apps and can be turned on and off. if (self.locationManager.locationServicesEnabled) { [self.locationManager startUpdatingLocation]; } But a user can deny access to an individual app and in order to not execute the code to use the location manager I need to know if the user approved access to location services for this specific app. I saw that at one point there was a property called locationServicesApproved which appears it would indicate if the user approved access to location services in this app. But it was removed in 2008.   My application (Asp.Net MVC) has great interaction with the user interface (jQuery/js). For example, setting various searches charts, moving the gadgets on the screen and more .. I of course want to keep all data for each user. So that data will be available from any page in the Dumaine and the user will accepts his preferences. Now I keep all data in a cookie because it did not seem logical asynchronous access to the server each time the user changes something and thet happens a lot.When the user logout from the application I save the cookie to the database. The problem is the cookie becomes very large. The thought that this huge cookie is attached to each server request makes me feel that my attitude is wrong. Another problem cookies have size limit. It varies from your browser but I definitely have been close to the border - my cookie easily become 4kb Is there another solution?

  Hey everyone. I am running Ubuntu 9.04 64-bit on my macbook. I had 2GB of ram before, and everything ran great. I just upgraded to 2x2GB (4GB), but my system only sees 3GB of it. OS X, which I am dual booting, sees all 4GB. Also, my video performance is incredibly lacking. Before the upgrade my compiz benchmark was full at 80fps, and now it is at 22fps with very choppy window dragging. Has anyone ever heard of this on a 64-bit kernel? I am doing this by adding the following to apache2.conf <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName lt1.example.net DocumentRoot /home/akshat/example/tmpblogs/tb1/ php_admin_value open_basedir /home/akshat/example/tmpblogs/tb1/ </VirtualHost> <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName lt2.example.net DocumentRoot /home/akshat/example/tmpblogs/tb2/ php_admin_value open_basedir /home/akshat/example/tmpblogs/tb2/ </VirtualHost> Now when I access lt2.example.net, I get the error: Warning: Unknown: open_basedir restriction in effect. File(/home/akshat/example/tmpblogs/tb2/index.php) is not within the allowed path(s): (0) in Unknown on line 0 Warning: Unknown: failed to open stream: Operation not permitted in Unknown on line 0 Fatal error: Unknown: Failed opening required '/home/akshat/example/tmpblogs/tb2/index.php' (include_path='.:/usr/share/php:/usr/share/pear') in Unknown on line 0 I was getting the same error while accessing "lt1.example.net" too, but then it suddenly became alright. What am I doing wrong here?

• How to verify my current user has admin rights or not?

  I'am running win XP sp2. How to check that whether I have admin rights or not? I can't check the system properties. I don't have that much items in the configuration panel. It seems I don't have admin rights, but how to check that formally ? Is there any command line tools for that?
