  I have my blog generate a preview by taking the first 300 characters and cut off the last whole word. My problem is, when I have a list near the top of the blog it is sometimes included in the preview, however the end list tag usually never is. So how can I check the $preview variable for a starting list tag, and if it is found, check for an ending tag and if it's not there add one. • display text when image on-click/hide text when different image click

  Hi I have created the following effects on the images seen here http://techavid.com/design/test3.html . You see when you hover and then click on each image, they go from grey to color. When you click on one - the others go grey and the one clicked remains color. That's cool, but now I need the text 1st: Sun for example to display and hide along with its graphic button. The word "Sun," is a link that needs to link out to a URL so it has to be separated from the image effect code. What jquery or javascript code do I need to do this? thanks, jonah p.s. • Update ancestors in a nested set?

  I am using nested sets to represent a tree in mysql, like so: Tree ID title lft rgt Given the ID of a node in the tree, what is the easiest / best way to UPDATE that node as well as all of it's ancestors? For example, let's say that the node ID (36) is 4 levels deep in the tree. I would like to update its title, as well as every parent node's title, all the way to the root, to the word "fish". (Should be four updates in all.) Thanks for your help!

• why is link generated in YUI javascript failing to render in rails?

  Using YAHOO.widget.treeview to generate a table with three levels of data: module, submodule, and detail. If there is an image associated with a detail row the javascript generates a link: "<td><a href=\"/screenshot/show/" + rowData.id + "\">Screenshot</a></td>" that is appended to the html for the row. The url is generated correctly and the link appears. When clicked nothing happens except the word 'Done' appears in the browser status bar. Am calling the very same url from another page that does not use javascript and the screenshot page appears as expected.   I need to replace some text that is on the page within the body tag. I am using javascript but have jquery available if needed. I basically need to replace test® (test with the registered trademark) with TEST® or tests® with TESTS® and it could even be test with TEST® or tests with TESTS®. I am able to uppercase them but its not liking to work for me with the ® sign, it wants to put duplicates on ones that already have it. Basically anything on the page that has the word test or tests should be TEST® or TESTS® if it is plural. Any help is appreciated.

  I'd like to write an axis label over two lines with an expression() statement. However, plotmath and expression won't allow this (e.g. subscript appear on the far right). I found this discussion circa 2005 of a similar issue but the work around that they offer doesn't translate to my application in ggplot2. A recent question addressed a a different permutation of multi-line expression statements, but again the work around provided doesn't apply here.   How to obtain the last element of the array in Postgres? I need to do it declaratively as I want to use it as a ORDER BY criteria. I wouldn't want to create a special PGSQL function for it, the less changes to the database the better in this case. In fact, what I want to do is to sort by the last word of a specific column containing multiple words. Changing the model is not an option here. In other words, I want to push Ruby's sort_by {|x| x.split[-1]} into the database level. I can split a value into array of words with Postgres string_to_array or regexp_split_to_array functions, then how to get its last element?

• Creating a computer with pencil and paper [closed]

  This concept has been brought to my attention before, but many people might know it from this popular comic here, where he uses stones instead of points on a paper. This concept is so abstract to me. A full-functioning computer that can manage algorithms, input, output, etc. without electricity? Surely, it's difficult to visualize because my definition of a computer is not exactly what the word sounds like COMPUTE-ER. Can someone help me bring the concept to light - the understanding, how to make one, etc? It seems like it'd be an interesting read, although I think I wouldn't be able to make it do anything. • How to set a custom font for a spinner?

  Is there anyway to set a custom font or color for the selected item in a Spinner? For example, I open the spinner and click a priority of "High". I'm my layout containing the spinner, I would like to see the word "High" in red or a custom font. I can't seem to obtain the textview to make the necessary change. I always obtain a NullPointerException if I typecast the spinner.getSelectedView() to textview and attempt to set the color. any ideas? thanks in advance!

• Manipulating both unicode and ASCII character set in C#

  I have this mapping in my C# application string [,] unicode2Ascii = { { "&#3001;", "\x86" } }; ஹ - is the unicode value for a tamil literal "ஹ". This is the raw hex literal for the unicode value saved by MS Word as a byte sequence. I am trying to map these unicode value "strings" to a hex value under 255 (so as to accommodate non-unicode supported systems). I trying to use string.replace like this: S = S.replace(unicode2Ascii[0,0], unicode2Ascii[0,1]); However the resultant ouput has a ? instead of the actual hex 0x86 stored. Any pointer on how I could set the encoding for the second element of that array to something like windows-1252? Or is there a better way to do this conversion? thanks in advance

  I'm converting an application from the .Net framework to Qt using C++. The application makes extensive use of regular expression unicode properties, i.e. \p{L}, \p{M}, etc. I've just discovered that the QRegExp class lacks support for this among other things (lookbehinds, etc.) Can anyone recommend a C++ regular expression library that: Supports unicode properties Is unicode-aware in other respects (i.e. \w matches more than ASCII word characters) As a bonus, supports lookbehinds. Please don't point me to the wikipedia article; I don't trust it. That article says that QRegExp supports unicode properties. Unless I'm really doing something wrong, it doesn't. I'm looking for someone actually using unicode properties with a regex library in a project.

  I need to find a way to do an INSERT INTO table A but one of the values is something that comes from a lookup on table B, allow me to illustrate. I have the 2 following tables: Table A: A1: String A2: Integer value coming from table B A3: More Data Table B: B1: String B2: Integer Value Example row of A: {"Value", 101, MoreData} Example row of B: {"English", 101} Now, I know I need to INSERT the following into A {"Value2", "English", MoreData} but obviously that won't work because it is expecting an Integer in the second column not the word "English", so I need to do a lookup in Table B first. Something like this: INSERT INTO tableA (A1, A2, A3) VALUES ("Value2", SELECT B2 FROM tableB where B1="English", MoreData); Obviously this doesn't work as-is ... Any suggestions?

• C++: Why does space always terminate a string when read?

  Using type std::string to accept a sentence, for practise (I haven't worked with strings in C++ much) I'm checking if a character is a vowel or not. I got this: for(i = 0; i <= analyse.length(); i++) { if(analyse[i] == 'a' || analyse[i] == 'e' [..etc..]) { ...vowels++; } else { ... ...consenents++; } This works fine if the string is all one word, but the second I add a space (IE: aeio aatest) it will only count the first block and count the space as a consenent, and quit reading the sentence (exiting the for loop or something). Does a space count as no character == null? Or some oddity with std::string?, It would be helpful to know why that is happening!

• Why are Asynchronous processes not called Synchronous?

Everyone refers to "Asynchronous" computing as running different processes on seperate threads, which gives the illusion that these processes are running at the same time. This is not the definition of the word asynchronous. a·syn·chro·nous –adjective 1. not occurring at the same time. 2. (of a computer or other electrical machine) having each operation started only after the preceding operation is completed. What am I not understanding here?

• JavaScript eval() with `this`

  If I define a JavaScript code snippet in my HTML, like so: <div id=myElem onMyUpdate="alert('Update called for ' + this.id)">... then what is the most elegant way of evaluating it from within JavaScript with this properly assigned? What I came up with so far is something like this: if (elem.hasAttribute('onMyUpdate')) (function () { eval(elem.getAttribute('onMyUpdate')) }).call(elem); which looks terrible (to me), but works. Any better/more elegant alternatives? MDN says there used to be the second argument to eval() for doing just that but it's deprecated now; MDN then suggests to use operator with() instead, which, if you follow the link provided, turns out to be made deprecated by the latest standard. Dead end, in other words. (As a side note, StackOverflow ignores the word this in search terms and thus it may miss relevant answers - is there a way of telling it not to?) Edit: I forgot to mention: no jQuery please, just vanilla JavaScript

• How to resize pdf graphics produced in R using Illustrator

  I am making plots in R using the pdf() command. Graphs look perfect and resize nicely in Acrobat Reader. My usual workflow includes manipulating labels etc. in Illustrator, saving as .eps for submission to publishers or inserting in Word. All works fine for single graphs. Now I am trying to combine 4 graphs into one by manually putting them together in an A4 Illustrator document. However, when I resize the standard 7x7 inches pdf graph in Illustrator to fit in one column of an A4 page (ca 3.4 inches wide), all proportions get screwed up, e.g. lines and symbols outlines become way too thick. Using pdf(..., width=3.4, height=3.4) in R messes up all the symbol and font sizes so carefully chosen to produce the original graph. Why can't I resize the graph within Illustrator the same way I can resize the pdf e.g. in Acrobat Reader?

• Why did the C# designers attach three different meanings to the 'using' keyword?

  The using keyword has three disparate meanings: type/namespace aliasing namespace import syntactic sugar for ensuring Dispose is called The documentation calls the first two definitions directives (which I'm guessing means they are preprocessing in nature), while the last is a statement. Regardless of the fact that they are distinguished by their syntaxes, why would the language developers complicate the semantics of the keyword by attaching three different meanings to it? For example, (disclaimer: off the top of my head, there may certainly be better examples) why not add keywords like alias and import? Technical, theoretical, or historical reasons? • Lucene.Net - How to treat a space-seperated phrase as a single token?

  I've implemented a search facility using Lucene.Net. The index includes UK academic qualifications, including "A Level". I'd like the users to be able to search using the phrase "A Level", but using the Standrad Analyser the "A" is stripped out as a stop-word and therefore only "Level" is indexed/searched. What's my best option to work around this? I'm guessing I need to somehow tokenise "A Level" to "A-Level" or similar by creating a custom analyser. Is this the best approach? Note that I want don't want the whole search to be a phrase query. i.e. in my search box I want the user to be able to enter <"A Level" AND English Maths Physics and this would return any with "A Level" and either of English MAths or Physics. Question updated to reflect this.

• Django naturaltime Localization error

  My language ID is 'id'. I used localized humanize library for my Django template tags and use the naturaltime, but the translation is partially wrong. The now translated to sekarang is right. second to detik. minute to menit, but when it comes to date, week, or months, the word is not translated to my language. It keeps printing date, week, and months. • What is the best software to write and organize written copy / content for a website?

  I'm a newbie product manager, looking for tips on how to write and organize text copy for my company's website. I need to be able to prepare the content for our public site and turn it over to the web designer who publishes it to our live site. I want our UI team to be able to quickly glance at the copy I write and immediately know where on the page I intend for it to go. Currently, I'm using microsoft word to write and color code different text to signify where I want specific text to go. It is difficult for the UI guy to immediately know if something goes into the nav bar or into a header or a description below a header. In addition to that, it would be helpful for me to be able to write the copy in such a way that the web designer could copy and paste it into the XHTML without having to go back and manually replace special punctuation characters with the XHTML entities. What software is out there that will allow a comprehensive solution to these web copywriting issues?

• Tool to maintain a Data Mapping between two systems

  We have XML interfaces between multiple systems. An Enterprise Domain Model is missing in the overall architecture, hence the terms Product/Customer/User means different things to different systems. We currently use excel sheets to map the elements in incoming XML to what the actual Field means within our system. Additionally, it contains the values of Mandatory/Optional and length of each field. We call this the Data Dictionary. Any changes to the XML go through rounds of deliberation and updates to Word and Excel documents. Is there a better way to do this? Any tool/GUI based approach which all systems and owners can view?

  Hi All, I have a text area field where i need to provide information about the word count when the user enters some text in the field. Length of the field is supposed to be 500 Characters. Initialy it must show min characters:100 | 0 of 500 // 0 of 500 must be in red color and once the user enters come character need to update the count as well. Once the user reaches the count say the min character 100, i need to display min characters:100 | 100 of 500 // 100 of 500 must be in green color. How can i do this?? is there any plugin for the same??? let me know your thoughts on this.

I wish to do this so that when I type $existing_personality->, I get the list of public functions available for that object type. At the moment, Zend doesn't know that it refers to a Personality object within the loop.
