• Spring, Hibernate and Ehcache - Wrong entities

  Hi there, I've got a webapp which uses spring+hibernate for my data layer. I'm using 2nd level caching with ehcache as provider. Everything seems to work so far but sometimes we encounter a problem which I can't really figure out atm. One of my tables is used for labels within the application - every user who logs access this table with his set language. Works for 90% of the time. But sometimes the user gets labels for the wrong language, e.g. instead of german everything turns to italian. After a logout and login all labels are correct. Does anyone of you encountered something like this? I'm not sure where to look at: spring+hibernate+ehcache is a solid package or is it not? Cheers

• MySQL encoding problem

  I use Java and JDBC to save japanese characters and it works perfectly on my local MySQL. But when I tried doing the same thing on my web hotels MySQL i get ????? instead of japanese characters. I have made the exact same tables and use exact same code. The only difference I have found is SHOW VARIABLES LIKE 'CHAR%' character_set_client utf8 character_set_connection utf8 character_set_database latin1 character_set_filesystem binary character_set_results utf8 character_set_server latin1 character_set_system utf8 character_sets_dir /s/usr-local/share/mysql/charsets/ character_set_datbase is set to latin1. But I can't change it! Any tips?

Create user accounts Invite friends Have a friends list Write messages to each other (some kind of inbox system) Create posts on a standard message forum On top of this I will create some kind of game where users interact, so it must be posibble to extend the framework with new database tables and functionality. • SQL vs MySQL: Rules about aggregate operations and GROUP BY

  In this book I'm currently reading while following a course on databases, the following example of an illegal query using an aggregate operator is given: Find the name and age of the oldest sailor. Consider the following attempt to answer this query: SELECT S.name, S.age FROM Sailors.S The intent is for this query to return not only the maximum age but also the name of the sailors having that age. However, this query is illegal in SQL--if the SELECT clause uses an aggregate operation, then it must use only aggregate operations unless the query contains a GROUP BY clause! Some time later while doing an exercise using MySQL, I faced a similar problem, and made a mistake similar to the one mentioned. However, MySQL didn't complain and just spit out some tables which later turned out not be what I needed. Is the query above really illegal in SQL, but legal in MySQL, and if so, why is that? In what situation would one need to make such a query?

  I have 2 tables, Stores - storeId (int) and year (int(4)) both Primary Keys. fruit - fruitId - Primary Key and storeId. I need to create 1 to many relationship between the Store and Fruit (Foreign Key held within Fruit) how ever I always get shown the error - The Columns in table <table> do not match an existing primary key or unique constraint. The type's are both int and named the same. Any help would be appreciate in advance, many thanks.

• double fork using vfork

  HI I am writing a part of a server which should dispatch some other child processes. Because I want to wait on some of the processes, and dispatch others without waiting for completion, I use double fork for the second kind of processes (thus avoiding the zombie processes). Problem is, my server holds a lot of memory, so forking takes a long time (even the copy-on-write fork used in Linux which copies only the paging tables) I want to replace the fork() with vfork(), and it's easy for the second fork (as it only calls execve() in the child), but I couldn't find any way I can replace the first one. Does anyone know how I can do that? Thanks! The server is a linux (RH5U4), written in C++.

• Google Visualization Annotated Time Line, removing data points.

  I am trying to build a graph that will change resolution depending on how far you are zoomed in. Here is what it looks like when you are complete zoomed out. So this looks good so when I zoom in I get a higher resolution data and my graph looks like this: The problem is when I zoom out the higher resolution data does not get cleared out of the graph: The tables below the graphs are table display what is in the DataTable. PseudoSchema Diagram (Warning: although pretty, not in a format even remotely approaching ER diagrams! Primary keys are bold, foreign keys are italics.) Given the above set of tables relating Users to Groups to Privileges, and then a set of Activities that can each require a Privilege to perform, how do you find out this: Show me all the Activities that can be performed by User X. That is: User X is a member of groups G and F; groups G and F correlate to privileges P, Q, R and S; show me all the activities that require privileges either P, Q, R or S. How do you do this?

• Possible to get PrimayKey IDs back after a SQL BulkCopy?

  Hi I am using C# and using SqlBulkCopy. I have a problem though. I need to do a mass insert into one table then another mass insert into another table. These 2 have a PK/FK relationship. Table A Field1 -PK auto incrementing (easy to do SqlBulkCopy as straight forward) Table B Field1 -PK/FK - This field makes the relationship and is also the PK of this table. It is not auto incrementing and needs to have the same id as to the row in Table A. So these tables have a one to one relationship but I am unsure how to get back all those PK Id that the mass insert made since I need them for Table B.

This involves writing queries to select data from the old schema and then inserting the results of the queries into tables in the new schema. The below is an example of what I am trying to do. The SELECT component of the below works fine, but the INSERT component does not work. • Huge page buffer vs. multiple simultaneous processes

  One of our customer has a 35 Gb database with average active connections count about 70-80. Some tables in database have more than 10M records per table. Now they have bought new server: 4 * 6 Core = 24 Cores CPU, 48 Gb RAM, 2 RAID controllers 256 Mb cache, with 8 SAS 15K HDD on each. 64bit OS. I'm wondering, what would be a fastest configuration: 1) FB 2.5 SuperServer with huge buffer 8192 * 3500000 pages = 29 Gb or 2) FB 2.5 Classic with small buffer of 1000 pages. Maybe some one has tested such case before and will save me days of work :) Thanks in advance.

• MVC without ORM is not real MVC?

  at the moment im integrating ORM (doctrine) into a MVC framework (codeigniter). then it hit me that this was the obvious way of setting up a MVC: the controller calls the models that are representing database tables. look at this picture: MVC + ORM then i wondered, how can a MVC without ORM be real MVC? cause then the models are not real objects, rather aggregations of different functions that perform CRUD, then returning the result to the controller. and there is no need for a state (object properties) i guess so the functions would be all static? correct me if im wrong on this one. i guess a lot of people are using models without ORM. please share your thoughts. how do your models look like?

• Browser gets blocked, workers to the rescue?

  Hello, I use JavaScript for rendering 20 tables of 100 rows each. The data for each table is provided by controller as JSON. Each table is split into section that have "totals" and have some other JavaScript logic code. Some totals are outside of the table itself. As a result JavaScript blocks browser for a couple of seconds (especially in IE6) :( I was consideting to use http://code.google.com/p/jsworker/, however Google Gears Workers (I guess workers in general) will not allow me to make changes to DOM at the worker code, and also it seems to me that I can not use jQuery inside jsworker worker code. (Maybe I am wrong here?). This issue seems to be fundamental to the JavaScript coding practice, can you share with me your thoughts how to approach it?

• Java library to partially export a database while respecting referential integrity constraints

  My production database is several GB's uncompressed and it's getting to be a pain to download and run locally when trying to reproduce a bug or test a feature with real data. I would like to be able to select the specific records that interest me, then have the library figure out what other records are necessary to produce a dataset that respects the databases integrity constraints and finally print it out as a list of insert statements or dump that I can restore. For example: given Author, Blog and Comment tables when I select comments posted after a certain date I should get inserts for the Blog records the comments have foreign keys to and the Author records those Blogs have foreign keys to.

• Mysql query - problem with order by

  I'm using two tables for selecting messages between users. Table "messages" for recording the messages and table "members" for checking users data (are they activ or deleted). This query working fine. What I need to do is list the received messsages order by last received. I tried to do with "ORDER BY messages.id DESC" at the end of this query but it didn't work. All messages are listed from first received.   I'm having two tables: A [ID, column1, column2, column3] B [ID, column1, column2, column3, column4] A table will always be subset of B table (meaning all columns of A are also in B). I want to update a record with a specific ID in B with their data from A for all columns of A. This ID exists both in A and B. Is there an UPDATE syntax or any other way to do that without specifying the column names, just saying "set all columns of A"? I'm using postgresql, so a specific non-standard command is also accepted (however, not preferred). Thanks.

• When should I write my own Look and Feel for Java Swing instead of customizing one?

  I have used a few different Look and Feels for Java Swing, but I don't really like anyone to 100% so I often end up with customizing it a lot. Sometimes I am thinking about if it is a better idea to write my own LaF (by extending an existing one), but I don't really know. For the moment, I mostly use Nimbus, but I change all colors (to darker ones) and rewrite the appearance of some components, like sliders and scrollbars. I also mostly customize all tables and I am thinking about to change the look of a few other components. When is it recommended to create a new Look-and-Feel instead of customizing one? • Using indexes on/through a MySQL view

  We've got a MySQL table in which rows are never updated, but instead new rows are added and the old ones marked obsolete. Think Rails' acts_as_paranoid, but for every update. To make working with Rails sane, we've got a view which selects only the rows which are "current". That makes a much better "table" for our ActiveRecord model. The snag: our indexes aren't being used anymore. Queries on the view don't use the underlying tables' indexes. You can't add an index to a view. Without indexes, the app is unbearably slow. The only solution we've come up with is to build a materialized view, but that's a pain in MySQL because they're not natively supported. Is there a better way to do this?

• NHibernate, each property is filled with a different select statement

  I'm retrieving a list of nhibernate entites which have relationships to other tables/entities. I've noticed instead of NHibernate performing JOINS and populating the properties, it retrieves the entity and then calls a select for each property. For example if a user can have many roles and I retrieve a user from the DB, Nhibernate retrieves the user and then populates the roles with another select statement. The problem is that I want to retrieve oh let's say a list of products which have various many-to-many relationships and relationships to items which have their own relationships. In the end I'm left with over a thousand DB calls to retrieve a list of 30 products. Thanks. I've also set default lazy loading to false because whenever I save the list of entities to a session, I get an error when trying to retrieve it on another page: LazyInitializationException: could not initialize proxy If anybody could shed any light I would truly appreciate it.   I usually use ORM instead of SQL and I am slightly out of touch on the different JOINs... SELECT `order_invoice`.*, `client`.*, `order_product`.*, SUM(product.cost) as net FROM `order_invoice` LEFT JOIN `client` ON order_invoice.client_id = client.client_id LEFT JOIN `order_product` ON order_invoice.invoice_id = order_product.invoice_id LEFT JOIN `product` ON order_product.product_id = product.product_id WHERE (order_invoice.date_created >= '2009-01-01') AND (order_invoice.date_created <= '2009-02-01') GROUP BY `order_invoice`.`invoice_id` The tables/ columns are logically names... it's an shop type application... the query works... it's just very very slow... I use the Zend Framework and would usually use Zend_Db_Table_Row::find(Parent|Dependent)Row(set)('TableClass') but I have to make lots of joins and I thought it'll improve performance by doing it all in one query instead of hundreds... Can I improve the above query by using more appropriate JOINs or a different implementation? Many thanks.
